Acer :: Copper Mod On Aspire 4937G (NVIDIA G105M)
May 7, 2010
i believe many of u experience gpu reaching near 100 degrees when gaming, causing laptop to jus turn off by itself.
a gd news here..copper shim solve the problem, which means it lower down temp to prevent tat from happening.
received copper shim in my mailbox yesterday.
thickness is 0.044", 1.11mm, 0.1cm
size is 0.75", 19.05mm, 1.9cm (kind of too big for gpu, becos the seller hav tat size for tat thickness, but nvm, look below)
wat i do next is to use a sand paper(fine one, not rough one), i use 1000cw since i had tat at home. lazy to go out to get more fine one.
do it on a flat surface, sand until like mirror effect.
now proceed to dismantle the whole laptop.
it seems tat the heatsink is too small for tat copper shim, but no need to worry, the surrounding alum is a little lower than tat copper.
using Arctic Cooling MX-2. apply on both cpu, gpu, n on copper shim after placing over gpu.
Stress test results
*Ambient Temperature: 32 degrees
Before copper mod, wit default thermal pad. i immediately stop the test b4 it blackout.
After thermal pad was replaced by Copper Shim.
temperature was still steady at 88 degrees after 11mins!

jus brought this for 2 weeks. clean install wit Win XP Pro SP3. but than wat makes me frustrated is tat when i use windows media player 11 to play mp3, as well as surfing net. somehow the song jus lag, but did not pause.
at first i thought is windows media player issue, so reinstall it, but stil the same. i than reinstall sound driver(Realtek), but doesnt help too. so went on to try other player, like winamp, media player classic. but didnt help too.
went on to power options to adjust to "Always On" which the speed n voltage wil be fix at max. it improve a bit only. however this only works on my previous laptop(Aspire 5584), but did not works on 4937G, when i observe it wit CPU-Z, Everest. the multiplier stil adjust either 6x or 10x. voltage also too..
i also did all the windows update, tweaks as well.
btw the processor n chipset using is T9550(2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 6MB L2 Cache), Intel Cantiga PM45 Express chipset.

Prior to 2006, there was a distinct difference between Apple and the PC industry. Apple specialized in design, and still does, and the PC industry won over customers by wooing them with the best bargain available—features for the price charged—and almost always at the cost of a pedestrian design. In 2006, in an ambitious bid to gain market share, HP launched a massive and hugely successful marketing campaign known as, “The Computer Is Personal Again,” and redesigned all of its laptops with the extremely popular high-gloss Imprint finish. In less than 2 years, HP unseated Dell as the undisputed leader in PC shipments and maintains that lead today.
3 years later, HP is back again (perhaps) to change the game. Borrowing from design cues from Apple’s Macbook Pro line, HP launched the dm3 in late October and the tm2 earlier this month, with designs that feature a brushed aluminum finish. Is it successful? Read more to find out.
How this laptop was purchased
I had shopped for a while to look for a new computer to replace my aging dv6000t from back in the Windows XP days. My options were the HP Pavilion dm3t and the Sony VAIO CW. I visited a Best Buy to check out some of the laptops, and I can say that I was absolutely repulsed by the build quality of the Dells these days. They suck. Period. What really won me over from the Sony CW was the build quality of the dm3t. The aluminum finish really is outstanding. More on that later................

I'm currently using Acer Aspire V5-573G, which uses Nvidia GT750M.
Whenever I run games or graphics-intensive program such as the adobe premier pro, the program will continue to run using the Intel HD graphics and not the Nvidia driver.
I've tried changing the settings in the Nvidia control panel to use Nvidia graphics driver for all programs, but running the optimus tool will show me that the Nvidia GPU is not being used for any of the programs.

First: I would like to update my Nvidea Geforce 9500M GS driver, i went to the site, downloa section. I found quite a list of files, but i don't know wich file i should download.
Secondly i'd like to know if it's possible to link the gemstone control to windows media player. Atm it opens Windows media center, but i think it's not very good to listen to music while gaming.

Acer Aspire Revo (R3600) - Pre-Retail Sample
The Acer Aspire Revo or R3600 is one of the first media centered nettops that utilizes the Nvidia ION platorm. The Ion platform consists of an Intel Atom Processor which is in this case an N230, and the Nvidia GeForce 9400 GPU. The nettop is to the desktop, as the netbook is to the notebook. The R3600 is basically a stripped down desktop , but still with plenty of functionality as well as usability.
The specs of the R3600 are similar to many netbooks out there. The CPU tasks are performed by the basic Intel N230 Atom @ 1.6Ghz, 533Mhz (133Mhz Quad pumped) FSB with 512Kb of L2 cache. The R3600 also features 2GB of DDR 667 memory and a 160GB 2.5inch 5400RPM SATA hard disk drive. Many of the current netbooks out there have similar specs and general use of the R3600 feels about the same, although sometimes can appear sluggish due to the installation of Vista Home Premium SP1. The N230 does manage to handle multithreading due to hyper threading which has been enabled in the bios.
The GPU of the Revo is the elusive Nvidia ION based on the Geforce 9400 architecture. The ION does not feature any memory, so it shares system memory. In the case of the Revo, it has 2GB of total memory with 256MB allocated to video. This leaves only 1.75GB for system use. The full specs of the Nvidia ION can be found in the chart below.
One odd thing about the Revo is it appears to be only using one memory channel while the ION chip set supports dual channel. while supporting up to 4GB of DDR2, the memory channel is limited to 64bit mode which does reduce overall memory bandwidth. One good thing is at least the Hard disk drive is in a native SATA mode (AHCI) which will help performance somewhat.....................

Premiere software. I'm not sure whether the crashes and problems are due to the laptop or the software. I purchased this new Acer laptop because from the reviews and specs I was confident it could handle PE13. I've had nothing but problems using the program though. Not sure if it's the laptop, the program, my own limited knowledge, or a combination.
Â
There are some issues I'm having:
Crashing
Unable to view/render/publish clips with certain effects
Unable to play clips after adding multiple lines of text

Acer Aspire 3830TG-6494 crashes while gaming.
Â
Crash symptoms:
-happens anywhere from within the first 15 minutes to several hours into a game (no link to graphic quality settings). No loss in performance leading up to the crash.
Â
-screen glitches and goes black, with a brief buzzing sound. Power remains on and fan is still running, forcing a hard reset.Â
Â
-Occasionally the sceen will freeze, ~1cm horizontal green lines will appear all over and a loud buzzing sound is emitted from the speakers until a hard reset.Â
Â
-Rarely I get a BSOD or the computer will shut down and restart itself. Resulting DMP files show no consistent suspected cause.
Â
-Crash will occasionally be preceded by certain in-game sounds cutting out. But not always.
Â
-The only link between crashes is that I'm usually thinking a solution worked right before the crash. (Frustrating!)
Â
-System will occasionally crash while  watching videos or something, but only crashes consistently while gaming.
 Â
I have tried the following:Â
-Running games using only the integrated graphics or nVidia GeForce GT 540M GPU.
Â
-Underclocking either the GPU(500MHz and 700MHz, from 672MHz and 900MHz), the CPU (seting max 70% power plan), and both simultaneously.Â
Â
-Temperatures do not exceed 70C under heavy use, and crash does not seem to be linked to any temperature increases.Â
Â
-Run both Windows 7 memory diagnostic and memtest86 (no problems found)
Â
-Run intel CPU diagnostics and intel XTU benchmark which did not cause a crash.Â
Â
-Upgrading all drivers to latest versions, as well as rolling them back to the versions recommended on acer download website. (Completely uninstalling graphics drivers before re-installing different versions) And making sure windows update was not automatically installing driver updates.
Â
-upgrading BIOS to v1.12, it was stable for a weekend then went back to crashing.
Â
-The system seems to be more stable in power saver or balance mode, but not  by much. I also suspected the Ac power adapter because it didn't seem to crash on battery for a brief time. But I was wrong and it did end up crashing whether plugged in or not.Â
Aand cleaning it out w/ compressed air, obviously ... I don't game often, and usually play older games on lower quality settings. I'm not overclocking or streaming at the same time.Â

I recently bought Acer aspire E15 model E5-572G-5577 which came with i5-4210m (2.6 to 3.2Ghz),8GB RAM,Nvidia GeForce 840M 2GB dedicated VRAM,1TB HDD and freeDOS. Since i recieved Win8.1 x64 for my Birthday i bought this laptop without windows and installed 8.1, as Acer claims that fully supports this OS.
Everything was ok in installation and i even installed HD4600 driver but when installed Nvidia driver although it looked ok and it was shown in device manager the graphic card wasn't show in my display (only HDGraphics) and in nvidia control panel i had only the 3D settings option but still it seems that 840M hasn't kicked in.
I assume its the driver so after many attempt with different drivers i still have the same issue. The laptop is brand new and in OEM 8.1 it seems to work but not for all of us that have a bought copy of Windows. I have wasted so much money on a Acer with 840M GPU that wont work.

I was playing Minecraft two days ago using the GeForce GT 730M graphics card not the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card when suddenly purple squares appeared on the game screen. The purple squares didn't appear any where else. The game crashed saying I had a bad driver. Then the laptop pop a blue screen saying VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. The laptop restarted as usual. I had this message before but further problems occurred. But this time is different.
After restarting I re-launched Minecraft but the game crashed saying I had a bad driver. I uninstalled the current driver using the programs and features and reinstalled the driver for my laptop found in Acer.com. The issue still continued. I went into Device Manager and found out that the graphics card had a code 43 issue. I found a solution online that said to install the newest driver on GeForce.com.
I did that and it seemed to remove the code 43 but when I went into NVIDIA GeForce Experience it said that my laptop didn't have a NVIDIA graphics card. Thinking it could of been a option that I changed that caused this, I did a refresh, and system restore to still see that my laptop wont recognize my NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M graphics card and that NVIDIA Driver Support Service was gone. It allows me to see when the NVIDIA GPU is in use. The system was cool when I started playing Minecraft when the problem happened.
System Specs:
Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622
NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M with 2 GB of dedicated VRAM
Intel HD 4000 graphics
15.6" HD LED LCD
4 GB DDR3 Memory
Acer NPlify 802.11a/g/n + BT4.0
Windows 8 64-bit

I've been reading through the "Dell XPS M1330 - nVidia GeForce 8400M GS - Copper Mod" thread (must admit not all gazillion pages...), and I was wondering if this mod would be possible for the Studio XPS16 as well, since the M1330 uses an Nvidia GPU, whereas the SXPS16 uses an ATI GPU. And, if it were, would it be beneficial?
How would one go about the mod then? Is the procedure similar to the M1330 mod described in the thread?
Link to the thread: Dell XPS M1330 - nVidia GeForce 8400M GS - Copper Mod
One more question: The pictures in the thread show three large chips under the heatsink; one is the CPU, the other one is the GPU, but what is the 3rd one? Southbridge?

So the technician is coming and I need to reverse the copper mod (I have a M1330). I'm not very good at this, so I need your help:
1) Basically, I just need to follow the same instructions for the copper mod, but this time using the foam square, right? Is there something else I should take into account?

as she watches quite a bit of TV shows on YouTube and GPU temperatures shoot up to 170F or so even with the back of the laptop jacked up. My D630 hovers around 150F just doing office-type work .....

What other things can i do to prevent overheating? I can't do the copper mod as it will be under warranty.
Depending on temps when i get it i will probably change the thermal paste with some arctic silver. I'll also undervolt the cpu and the gpu but will this be enough? I'm also looking at a cooling platform and i have a griffin stand which will get some air underneath it. Depends how hot it gets under load but are there any other tweaks i can perform or mods to improve cooling that wouldn't void the warranty?

There are 3 known revisions of the heatsink. The first and second shown here while the third being another copper one but with smaller heat plates.
I know technically copper should be better since it is a better conductor than aluminum.
I have the aluminum revision but was thinking of buying a copper one off ebay. However before doing so I found a thread which noted some differences I didn't notice.

I just stumbled accross the thread about modding some dell with an 8400M GS vidcard, I was wondering if this also applied to sony as well.. or they did a good job adding thermal compoung to the heatsink.
I just wanted to know if any of you did some mod, if it's really necessary or my GPU will melt slowly while I game.
Some guy said about placing a copper sheet in between the heatsink and the gpu.. but I still don't get how much pressure should be applied when bolting the screws.
On the other hand has anyone mod their 8400 M GT to say a 8600 using rivatuner..

Hi, have just bought a Studio 1557 off eBay, but only after buying (not yet received) did I read various forum comments, here and elsewhere, about overheating issues (especially for the GPU, the HD 4570).
I want my laptop to last years (hopeful, aren't I!). I've read that several members have managed to put a copper shim (with thermal paste either side) between the chip and its heatsink and successfully lowered operating temps. that way, but can't find any mention of exact dimensions for the shim!
There are a couple of sellers on eBay that offer copper shims for laptop chips but they don't appear to have a stock one for the Studio 1557; they are willing to make one to measure, if I can supply dimensions, i.e. size and thickness.
I'd be grateful if anyone who's successfully fitted a copper shim to the GPU, in particular, of their Studio 1557 could post the exact dimensions, obviously including thickness, of the shim.

I recently got a Dell Precision M4300 from a friend and had a few questions.
When i got the laptop, I reformatted the Laptop and Reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. I proceeded from Microsoft to Update to SP3 and so on.
Well I also Went to Dell's Website and downloaded all the necessary drivers (using the service tag) for this laptop and installed them.
Now here is where I ran into a problem,
When I installed the NVIDIA drivers for the NVidia Quadro FX 360M video card, everything seemed to go fine. Then I rebooted the Laptop, and now every time I reboot, my hardware acceleration is defaulted back to None, and it gives me multiple pop ups about this issue. I go into the settings and turn the Acceleration back to full and it goes away.
This is a major problem, and is really frustrating to deal with everytime the laptop is booted up.
My other problem, is when I open up Internet Explorer, It tends to lock up the browser for no reason when Loading a website. I then CTRL+ALT+DEL and attempt to close iexplore.exe via the task manager. It closes the browser but does not shut down the browser, making it impossible to browse, so then I have to reboot.
here are the specs of the PC, from the device manager and drivers I have gotten
Dell Precision M4300
NVidia Quadro FX 360M 512mb Video Graphics Card
TSST 8x dvd+-R burner
120GB Hard Drive
3.5GB of Ram
2.5GHZ T9300 Core 2 Duo Processor
1394 Port
2 USB ports
External Monitor Ports
Wifi Support
Bluetooth Support
Windows XP SP2 Pro

I did this because I want to play Blu-Ray films AND have a decent selection of 16:9 resolutions - The Nvidia ones (with the modded inf) cause Acer Arcade not to play (gives an error about incorrect driver installed) and the official Acer ones only give you 2 actual 16:9 resolutions. Bear in mind this is mainly for my gaming as not everything will run at 1920x1080 but I don't want to go as low as 1366x768 but it's fixed a wierd problem with my TV where the HDMI 720p output was bigger than the TV screen (which is 720p but doesnt have any over/underscan ability?).
****This should be regarded as a "hack" to the drivers and as such I take no responsibilty for anything that happens if you try this - I am providing the details in case others have the problems above........

it seems like the 9650M GS is rapidly overheating if I play games - idle temps are around 65-70, but then it goes up to 100-110 very quickly. I tried some different drivers, and now I have underclocked the card from 625/800 mhz (core/mem) to 440/600, but it only helps somewhat.
Is there anything else I can try? Maybe it's a driver issue?
