I am currently in the market for a laptop for college. Now I am not looking to buy atm but I am getting ideas for the fall semester. My overall goal is to provide mobility in my life and not feel like I have to depend on the desktop to handle my computing needs. I have been looking at Apple's OS X for the past 1 1/2 years and feel it's finally time to start making the switch.
Computer Science Major
-Not intended for Gaming
-Not intended for Graphic Design/Video Editing (outside of iLife)
-Able to boot Windows (XP or Windows 7) if needed.
-Able to run iWork, iLife, iTunes, etc. w/o issues.
-Last for 2+ years w/o needing upgrades (unless desired) or replacement.
As you can see I will still need a dependent on Windows. This comes down to several classes that I have taken in which there wasn't Mac equivalent software to some programs I needed, so I will need options. What I don't know is how system resources on the Mac suffer when you boot to Windows. Would I need to buy higher system resources such as a strong processor? Will a 2.0 be sufficient or would I need a 2.4 or even have to look at a MBP's 2.66GHz? Now I don't know if I am overlooking anything else and I get the impression from looking at other posts that I wouldn't have an issue but just making sure before I spend the money and make the switch.

The 5100 has two antenna connectors and so the 1810T has two antennas already installed in it.
I purchased a third antenna, but I don't want to disassemble the screen to add the third antenna next to the two stock antennas.
Can I just place the third antenna here (empty area next to mini PCIe slot):
i have just purchased a new acer aspire 8730g-6353 and for some reason i cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. i can see the networks available and attempt to connect, but i'm never given the chance to input the WEP key to connect. it gives me an error telling me my troubleshooting options (which just alludes to it being a problem with signal or some garbage like that, but there is 100% signal strength at any given time).

Acer sends an upgrade disc that is of the same type as your Vista OS.
So I got an upgrade disc for Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, as well as a product key on the COA.
What I want to ask is whether it is possible for me to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit through a clean install by finding a friend with the normal retail Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVDs, using the 64 bit DVD and then entering the product key that came with my Acer 32 bit Windows 7 HP upgrade disc.
Has any one here received their windows upgrade 7 from Acer yet? Please can you tell me if the 64bit version is included or is it 32bit only?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just made my weekly call to Mentor Media and this is the first time someone spent enough time to tell me something potentially encouraging about my Windows 7 upgrade. She indicated that this week they finally (her word) have given them some information when things would ship. She said my order would ship within 3-5 business days – maybe before – and encouraged me to call back Friday for an update. She said that e-mails typically go out 24-48 hours after it has actually shipped, and to not necessarily expect the web site status to change. Somehow I sensed she maybe knew something concrete this time instead of just having to say that they didn’t know.
I’m cautiously optimistic.
I already bought a new upgrade license for Windows 7 and was about ready to install it on my Acer, but hearing this am going to hold off a bit longer in hopes that I can save it to use on my older Vista desktop. Hope I’m not hung out to dry again being suckered into waiting just a bit longer …
Has anyone that has received their upgrade kit found that it does a BIOS upgrade? The BIOS on my Acer M1202 is SLIC 2.0 compliant and presumably won’t allow any OEM activation key to work on it until it’s 2.1 compliant. Just curious how they are doing this.
just recieved the upgrade in the mail yesterday (finally hehe) well install went real smooth but once into windows 7 and all drivers installed i go to windows updates and theres a recomended for the ATI video card.
Now I don't want to do this because of all the problems we had with this system during the beta and video card drivers, has anyone tried the window updated drivers?
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and everything seems fine, apart from a couple of minor things. When I had the original Vista installation when I pressed the mute button on my media control panel it lit up blue, since the upgrade the light doesn't respond.
Also when I turn on the volume on the media control panel the volume changes but I no longer get the graphic on the screen telling me what number its at.
I am trying get Windows 7 installed on my 1410 but since there is no optical drive it is a real pain. Got windows 7 installed by doing a clean install using a usb drive. Now the problem is I cannot install the Acer software and drivers that acer included on their upgrade disc. I tried running the program from my external hard drive but that does not work since it says to insert the disk. ...why can't they make it easier? All the applications and drivers are on the disk but I have no idea which to install since the disc contains files for all their models. Why would acer not make thier upgrade disc a download or something for their computers without an optical drive?

Now I'm itching to make the switch to Windows 7, but apparently the 5920G isn't on Acer's list of compatible computers, which has me a bit apprehensive... However, I've run the upgrade advisor and it gave me just a few minor concerns, which leads me to my question:
If I upgrade to Windows 7, will my recovery partition still be intact, enabling me to revert back to the factory defaults with Windows Vista if need be?
back on sept 2nd i bought this acer 5517 with vista home premium . i hated the vista and acer bloatware so i wiped the drive clean and put ubuntu on it. on the way home frm work today i checked mail and found the windows 7 upgrade arrived . inserting either disk does nothing the computer just boots into ubuntu. i can open the DVD and look at the files but can not run any. all the tutes written for installing windows 7 assume you already have windows on the machine which i dont. is this upgrade kit any good or should i just chuck it in the trash ? looked in the uprade disk files (the acer one with drivers) and i seen a bios folder so i dont think i have slic 2.1 on the bios either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 5738z and upgraded to windows 7. I had to do a clean install as I upgraded to x64 Win7 from x86 vista to use the 4gb of RAM the machine has. The upgrade went fine, no problems. All drivers installed fine and the machine runs great. My problem is that the ePower button will not work no matter what I try (it's the P button on other models) and it wont light up green. I've used the Acer upgrade disk, which installed the launch manager software, but the button still wont work.

However in the device section it says that the Mobile Intel (R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family is not compatible - driver not compatible with Windows 7 . Is there a driver I can download to fix this problem? I've checked the Intel download web site but can't determine whether a driver exists or not ??

Win 7 recognizes it now has 5 gig, but won't use the 4 gig. I've tried find a place in bios to make a memory change but can't locate any place to do that. I can change the setting without issue and the settings work to my specifications... but every time I shut my computer down, the settings revert to default upon start up. Dell only has single link (up to 1080p) DisplayPort to DVI adapters. However, some sites (e.g., here) do sell dual-link ones. I assume that the DisplayPort on the M4400 would have to support dual-link for that to work, though... Would the M4400 work with one of those?
