Dell :: E1705 Screen
Oct 20, 2009
I purchase a Dell E1705 in August of 2006 and it was a great computer until around August of 2008. What started happening is the screen would go blank or when you turned the computer on the computer would start to load and then present a blank screen.
The BIOS is updated and the battery is fine. Since the screen problem I've had Dell replace the motherboard 3 times, the video card twice, and the LCD panel twice.
Actually when the technician installed the last LCD screen and tested it the screen didn't work but when he put the old one in it did work. I kept telling him it was the video card and not the LCD panel. Turns out I was right. Thankfully my computer is under warrenty until August 2010 but I'd rather eat dog crap then deal with Dell support again. They're useless!! If I ask for their assistance this will be the FOURTH time in a little over a year and a half. Oh, and by the way, I am very carful with these machines .....

so last night my wife was on my laptop and she went to her friends myspace page. She scrolled down the page and clicked onto background wallpaper on accident and all of a sudden the screen started flashing, the song that was playing on the page started cutting in and out. When the screen was up she tried to close the webpage etc but the system kept cutting out. I told her to just hard power down the system. Problem is when she tried to start it back up there is no bios/dell splash screen. It looks like the monitor screen powers up and I can see the power light on the case, but there is nothing else. I hooked it up to an external monitor and that monitor powered up and didn't give a no signal error so it must be getting fed something.
Does this sound like the bios on the mobo got hosed? Does it sound like a video card problem (i have an fx2500 with 130watt psu)? If I contact dell, do you guys think the tech who shows up will slam me for the video card and void what's left of my warranty?

I have a three year old E1705 and after several minutes using it the screen flickers a tad bit then goes black.
I can shut if off but it will not go back to normal until it wants to. Sometimes this is a half hour or sometimes several hours almost as if it is to hot but the CPU temp is normaly 45 C to 50 C.

After a few years of good service, I noticed a white vertical patch about ½" thick on my E1705 yesterday. It's always there whenever the screen is on.
I haven't connected the laptop to an external monitor yet to completely rule out graphics card issue, but it seems like a screen issue to me. Last year I had a graphics card issue (garbled screen) and Dell replaced it under warranty but it's out of warranty this time ......

I'm rebuilding an Insprion E1705 from several broken 9400/E1705. I get the following when I install Vista Ultimate 64bit.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFF88010B85800, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFF8000A696440, 0x0000000000000000)
I have used the Dell Support Blue Screen Trouble-shooting.
It says: Use the Windows Debugger to pinpoint the exact cause of these errors.
Is there a Dos version or self booting CD version of the debugger so I can pinpoint the hardware that is causing the problem.

My brother gave me an older Dell laptop (about 3 yrs old I think) that had a dead battery, broken screen, dead touch pad, and other misc problems.
I was wondering if I could take off the screen and use an external mouse and monitor?
This would be used to replace my moms old HP desktop running Windows 95 until she has enough money to get her own machine

I currently have a laptop that's going to be replaced. It's the E1705 with the 1.83ghz and ati x1400 video card. I've had numerous problems with it (MB, speakers, lcd screen, heatsink) and dell is granting me a replacement. Being that I only have the ATI x1400, I guess I don't have too much leverage in negotiations.
I asked the Tech rep what laptop I would be getting and he responded with, "Are you looking for a better laptop?" I didn't want to sound too greedy so I just replied "I just one with a DVI port" lol. Then, he replied with no problem. Then I got the classic response: "You'll get one that is most likely similar components or better." Did I act incorrectly by not being greedy. Should I have said "Yes, I want a better laptop!!"
Also, if I insist that a DVI port is basically required and one of the main reasons why I got the E1705 in the first place, what other laptop options could they try and replace me with? One of the reasons I said I insist on it having DVI is because the current model E1720 does not have a dvi port. I'm actually hoping for the Dell M1710 or M1730

My dell Inspiron E1705 has been giving me these strange horizontal / angular lines and dots on my screen with different characters on the text as well whenever I boot up.
Have installed latest nvidia drivers too. I actually reformatted the system and installed all the drivers. For a week system worked fine and then started showing the display abnormality.
Again re-installed the OS after re-formatting. When the display gets impacted even portion of the screen appears in different color. This is not limited to any one part of the screen .....

i don't have a clear conclussion about the max ram that E1705 support. Some guys says that support 4GB and xp reads 3.5, but others says that support 2GB. and some users on this forum, in their signs, says 2GB of ram on E1705 laptops.
i wanna do a upgrade of ram , because i have 1GB. but i don't know if I will be able to put 3GB on my laptop..

I was considering selling my E1705 before but after some research and input from others I came to the conclusion that I should just stick my my E1705 because the resale value is much lower than I expected (I wanted to sell my machine, get a small laptop for mobility and build a desktop).
So now I want to just upgrade my laptop to the max and maybe just get a shitty eee pc as my 2nd laptop to carry around everywhere.
Where is room to upgrade, things I am considering so far to up is
a T7600 CPU, 4GB 667mhz RAM, 200gb 7200rpm HD, GTX is a maybe... don't know how much difference there will be. How should I change my choices and what else can I upgrade.
Inspiron E1705, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Integrated High Definition Audio
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card
80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)

I was readin a review on cnet last week, and there was an hp and a toshiba laptop with the same stats.. anyway, they did tests and cnet says that the quality of the RAM was probably why the test results were so diffrent.
Im looking to get more RAM for my e1705.

This week I finally made the choice to get 2x2G sticks for my E1705. They arrived today and I installed them as soon as I could.
But unfortunately Windows XP Pro SP2 wouldn't start completely (it froze somewhere in the screen with the logo and the moving bar underneath). Windows does start in dafe mode and reports 3.25G.
The funny thing is, Mac OS X does load completely and run without a problem. I even mentions 4G installed.
I did a quick memtest and the sticks seem to be ok. I changed the order of the sticks and no difference.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a setting I need to change on my Windows. Or would I need to reinstall it (doesn't seem logical).

Purchased a e1705 in June of 2006. Started having the NMI parity errors within a month.
Contact Dell and they swapped out memory. The problem seemed to be better, but still linger for a while with the NMI errors. Installed Vista on the system and cant remember ever having an error. Then I installed Counter-strike, and started getting the error back. Recontacted Dell and they replaced the motherboard and ram. That hosed my vista install where printing, control panel, stopped working. Backed up my data and reinstalled after formating the drive Windows XP using the Dell disks I received. Now the system isnted on for more than 5-15 minutes without an NMI error.
Oh, now dell is wanting me to send my laptop to a depot where they can make sure its fixed. I will now be without any laptop, working or not for around 2 weeks.
I have the 4 year extended warranty with accident protection.

So I bought an Inspiron 9400 bout two years ago, its a piece of shi*t ... i've had i dunno about 6 or 7 service calls now .... ANYWAYS
When I went to purchase a laptop I was looking at both the XPS and the laptop I decided on (E1705), and the only thing I noticed that was different was that the XPS was substantially more expensive, and had a different look ...
Not to insult anyone's taste or anything, but the look of the XPS is tacky as hell lol ... I mean, its inundated with the word XPS everywhere (even on the touchpad ... ?), i've never seen one in person ... maybe someone can explain to me haha
Anyways, the purpose of this post isn't about the aesthetic differences between the two series of laptops lol. A friend of mine who is in the market to purchase a laptop has asked me what the differences were ... and I couldnt answer him (hence why i'm posting)
What i'm asking then is, other then its shell, assuming the CPU, GPU, RAM, display are identical what is it that makes the XPS better and at a much higher price? Is the motherboard better, or are XPSes less prone to random breaking? If anyone can differentiate the two for me i'd appreciate it, so I can help my friend out before he drops $2.5k on a laptop

But on the Device manager, one thing is not recognized.
It is shown as:
Other devices - Base System Device.
Its location is PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3.

Trying to let the AS5 set right now, hope the temps are lower than the other CPU since it was using one of those cheap cpu pad things.
Next on the upgrade list is the biggest 7200RPM drive that will fit.
Then another 2Gb of RAM for a total of 4Gb!

I was using a 7900GS in the laptop but that died...(excellent product from dell, dies after about 2 years)
Anyway I was just using it as a HTPC so I don't need gaming graphics.
Anyway, I was outputting fine 720p to my reciever and then TV, after replacing the card (with an X1400) I can't output anything to the recieiver. When I plug it in it says nothing is there?
I've also dried the DVI-hdmi adapter...instead of DVI-hdmi cable which shouldn't make a difference but I gave it a shot....
I tried plugging it in directly to a normal LCD instead of the reciever and still nothing

An hour ago, I accidentally dropped my Inspiron E1705. The notebook fell from 3ft high and hit the ground on its bottom side (the same position you use the laptop). I tried to turn it on to see if it worked and here's what I found:
The notebook turns on and the battery charges
The hard drive led is blinking like booting
The keyboard works
No beeps
Screen is blank, no video at all, I tried using an external monitor and got the same result

My laptop has shut down abrubtly twice because of overheating. When I powered the laptop again, it would bring me to that overheating warning prompt with the two nasty beeps and whatnot.
Since I'm running Windows 7 x64, I wasn't able to install i8fangui, but I found a program called SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) that I'm running right now.
Here are the current temperature readings for everything:
GPU: 73 C (there's a fire icon next to this. can't imagine that's good)
HD0: 36 C
Core 0: 50 C
Core 1: 50 c

If you upgrade the e1705 GPU to say a 7950GTX GPU; don't you have to worry about the compatibility with the chipset? Or does the BIOS flash take care of that?

I've been the owner of an e1705 for about a year, and I'm really tempted to upgrade it.
Current base specs:
1.73ghz Core Duo T2250
80GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
1GB RAM
NVIDIA 7900GS
Windows Vista Home Premium
This notebook is used for occasional gaming (counter strike source) and has become my desktop replacement.
I was thinking of upgrading to 2GB RAM and either a 100GB 7200 RPM hard drive or a 160GB 5400 RPM hard drive.

I bought my system from Dell about right at 3 years ago. I got an Inspiron 9100 with 3 years of CC for around $1700
P4 2.8 with HT Prescott
512 MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 MB
15 inch crappy screen
40GB 5400RPM HDD
CDR/RW DVD drive
XP PRO
They replaced my computer with an e1705
Core 2 Duo 1.73 T5300
2 GB DDR2-667 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 256MB
17 inch WXGA Samsung
8xDVDRW drive
80GB 5400 RPM HDD
XP PRO
I was shocked that I got upgraded so much. Then I started reading some of the reviews of the x1400 and it was terrible. I benchmarked this computer and the graphics did a little better then my old system. I played some of the games that i usually played on my older computer and they ran a lot worse on this computer. I don't know if i should complain about the graphics card, since they did give me a huge upgrade and all.
Also, does anyone know about how they work their warranties. When i got this system and registered it on their website it said that i had three years of CC warranty left. Then when the warranty went dead on my other computer so did the warranty on my new one! If I knew that was going to happen i would had bought the extended warranty before it went dead.
