Feb 22, 2009Seriously, how did i live without this before? its so awesome. i use the trackpoint and touchpad in conjunction and i tried using my sisters laptop without one and its not the same.

Apr 4, 2008Just wanted to say how much i love this laptop. I had numerous problems with my xps gen2, and when i say numerous, i mean numerous. I never got angry with dell and really only asked for the 7800 as i heard that it ran cooler. I went through 5 video cards, 3 motherboards (one had a bad nic when the tech installed) 3 processors and 2 screens (which i never really wanted or needed!) and 2 power supplies. All for overheating of the GPU past 90 celsius which i think was cooking all the other components. luckily i had a latitude c840 for a backup so didn't really miss the down-time. And actually there was only 2 times i couldn't use the laptop while the parts parade was going on... most times i just couldn't game on it for more than 5 minutes, but the 2 times it was DOWN was due to nothing but big blue bars / squares all over the screen from boot. And i'll give it up for the tech (most times it was the same nice old man) and the fact that he got the part and came to install within 1-3 days. EVERY TIME! Now if only that sort of service would be included with the AW experience...
I had a 3 year warranty on that which was transferred over to the new 1710 replacement i received a year ago.
This past month i extended my warranty (which obviously now covers my 1710) for an additional 2 years with 2 more years of complete care. Probably going to be the best $400 i've spent! Actually my company spent that as i was due to replace my laptop this year, but i love this thing so much that i don't even WANT another laptop right now. Well, i would accept a macbook pro, but that's another story!
So the point of this thread? well, there isn't one. I purchase roughly 75k in desktops and monitors each year for my company and around that again for servers and storage. Sure we've had a few issues. Hard drives lately have been failing after 3 years and we had a rash of desktop motherboards suffering from the "industry-wide" bulging capacitors that seemed to plague a good amount of PCs in 2005. Other than that, i'm very happy and ... yeah..
I LOVE MY 1710. I love it so much, that if i go for another windows machine it will probably be a precision with the 8800 card. by the time i will need another winblows machine for work, hopefully the precision will have a 19" screen with a 9800 based quadro!
By the way, the picture is of 18kfangui and let me tell you. i have my house at 69farenheit and this thing runs very cool. I blow out my fans about once a month with compressed air.

May 4, 2009HP has great customer service.....i have an hp compaq laptop and hp printer..and had great experience with customer service...they come to your place to collect n everything.
but one problem..they never seem to make laptops with high end specs...all their laptops have great design, great secondary features..but the specs never touch the gaming level.
especially the graphic cards.
of course they made the 20" dragon..but i am talking about smthg in 15 - 16" area.
are there any models out yet which have atleast 8600M GT?

Jan 3, 2015I cannot type but I can use the keyboard trackpoint and trackpoint keys. I have tried changing the keyboard, but the same problem persisted. The drivers were good and I can attach keyboard via USB for full functionality. Could it be a problem with the palm rest where the keyboard attaches to or something else?

May 31, 2009i've noticed now, and it's annoying that sometimes when i touch the trackpoint or touchpad LIGHTLY, like just right before.
i use it, it'll register it as a left click and i'll end up dragging things around instead of moving the cursor..
so now i try to plan and leave the cursor at an area of the screen/desktop where it won't select anything.. .
happens maybe 5% of the time, but since i use those pointing devices so much it's annoying. doesn't happen when i have a mouse though btw..

Mar 18, 2012Using Win 8.1 x64 and the latest Synaptics drivers, if I'm typing or holding a key the left click does not work. I've tried every setting in the Synaptics control panel and can't figure out how to disable this behavior.
How to disable this? It's very annoying, especially as there is a delay after pressing a key before I can click the mouse of around a half second.
Easily recreated by opening notepad and holding down the A key, then trying to left click something.

Jul 31, 2014Is there any way to completely disable the touchpad and trackpoint on the X1 Carbon without going into bios?
I am able to disable touchpad OR trackpoint by going into mouse properties in control panel but it won't let me do both. I would like to turn it back on relatively easily if possible.
I am trying to do this on a work computer and I have no administrative rights and I am using Windows 7 Professional.
Can this be done or did Lenovo completely overlook such a simple feature?

Nov 27, 2007The trackpoint middle scrolling button doesn't work for some of the newer applications such as ITunes, the newest versions of Picasa, Windows Live Mail, Safari, and Windows Live Writer.
Below is a fix applicable to all Windows OS's. The location of the edited file may vary so look in the Device Manager under trackpoint driver details to find driver locations.
The file must be edited as an administrator in Vista and Windows 7. To do this, at the programs box type in notepad and on the notpad program in the menu right click and select, "Run as Administrator."
In Win7 x64 it is located at: (edit with Notepad run as Administrator).

Jan 18, 2009Is it normal that dell.ca would have fewer choices of screens than dell.com? I'm looking at the studio 15, and dell.com lists Hi Resolution/Bright,
glossy widescreen 15.4 WLED display (1440x900) as a choice, which is what I want, but dell.ca doesn't. When I view the system specs though, that choice is listed as on option.

Dell Vostro 3460 :: Not Boot Only Loads The Dell Logo And Then Shows A Black Page
Feb 9, 2013my laptop vostro 3460 won't boot any more. When I turn it on it loads the Dell logo (I suppose it passes the POST) but then it just shows a black page. It could be anything, but I guess that it may have something to do with Windows 8 and the UEFI system. I also would be quite happy to install linux mint and get rid of Windows, but I don't know how to change the boot priority order.
So my questions are:
1 is it a hardware issue ? if not, can I solve my problem easily ?
2 how can I change the boot priority order, to install mint ?

Dec 26, 2008Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to boot up and stay unfrozen long enough for me to retrieve my files, and put them on my tower pc.
In a nutshell, I got this Inspiron about 3 years ago- I currently have it connected to an external monitor, because my wife dropped a heavy object on the screen last year, and destroyed said screen.
Just this past week, I turned it on, and it started getting really slow. Finally, it got to a point where now, when I turn it on, it boots up, it goes to the desktop, the desktop icons all appear, and within a minute or two, it just kind of slows down, and eventually freezes up, and the hard drive indicator light quits doing anything. It does not respond to anything, and the only way to restart it, is to hold the power button down until it resets.
If anybody knows of a thread already on this site, regarding this problem, please point me in the right direction, as I tried the search function, and did not come up with anything.
and one or two other things, since it initially started having problems, sometimes, I will get two "missing module" error boxes pop up- and also, while it is booting, the screen flashes black for about 3 seconds, and then comes back on and continues to load.
Thank you very much to anybody who could possibly help me out of this jam. I really do not plan on using this laptop (or notebook) anymore, if and hopefully when, I get my files off of it.
And that is the other problem, I can not attempt to boot up in safe mode, as my screen is busted up, and it will not output to my external monitor, when I hit the f key while it is starting. I did make a couple different bootable cds, but they do not seem to do anything.

Sep 14, 2007I enjoy gaming, although I wouldn't consider myself a "hardcore" gamer. I currently have 1024 MB of RAM (2 x 512) and I am looking to upgrade soon. My options are as follows:
- Dell certfied RAM
- PNY RAM
- Kingston RAM
- Corsair RAM
Of course, for the Dell RAM, I have to wait for the shipping, but it is one of the cheaper ones. However, any of the other three I can pick up at Best Buy (which is more convenient). Can someone point out the pros and cons of each? It seems the PNY is a great buy, but could there be performance problems compared to the others? And why is the Kingston so expensive?
