Dell :: I9400/E1705 Max Ram

Sep 28, 2007

way to get the Inspiron E1705/9400 to accept more memory? Dell says the max is 2gb but an XPS m1710 has 4gb. Is it just a matter of flashing the BIOS? Or should I be able to pop 4gb in it and that's it? I want to make sure I can get it to accept it before I buy it.

Dell :: I9400 W/ Go7800

Aug 16, 2007

I was on here this afternoon trying to find a thread that shows some good overclocks people have gotten with the Geforce GO 7800 that is in my Inspiron 9400. But sometimes i swear I am the last person on this planet who actually HAS this card still. Not a GTS, GS, etc etc. Just a plain old severely underclocked to 250 GO 7800...

Has everyone managed to get a GS or 7900 or GTS or any of the other variations of cards the 9400 has had over the past year to two years? Everyone but me?

I have heard of people getting Dell to replace thier 7800 with 7800s but the last post I found about that was like a year old.

What could I ask Dell to replace mine with if I was to talk with them via chat? I would love any help in this matter. Everytime I game with my laptop I overclock it, but then I put it back to normal. Kind of a pain, and of course I hate how hot it gets.

Dell :: Battery Not Lasting On I9400

Sep 25, 2007

I've only had my Inspiron 9400 since May. I have used it on both battery and power, but most of the time power. Recently I've had to start using the battery more, from 100% charge showing if I unplug it from the power, it immidietly drops to 90% but shows I have about 2 hours of play. Is this just a dud battery. I have had dell previously and my battery was fantastic, even 3 years after buying it.

Dell :: BSOD After Upgrading I9400 To A NV7900gs

Sep 9, 2007

I upgraded my inspiron to a 7900 gs from x1400 a while back now (3months ago) and it has been running smoothly (games like quake 4/lotro at high graphics).

However, i have recently started playing Bioshock and after about 10 minutes of gameplay i got a blue screen of death with the following error:

Tried to write to read only memory (or something along those lines)

It specifies a NV4.dsp file

Was wondering if it is a driver problem or hardware?(running bioshock on high settings by the way (1440x900 res) and when it does run it runs well - a very playable 30-60fps)
One thing to note is that i didnt format when upgrading the video card - could there be conflicting drivers?

My sys specs are as follows :

intel duo t2400 (1.83)
2gig 667 ram
nvidia (dual pipe) 7900 gs (running stock on Mobile Force drivers).........

Dell :: I9400 Failing, Refuses To Replace The Unit

Feb 14, 2010

My friend has Inspiron 9400 that's on its last legs, it keeps turning off at random times, graphics on screen sometimes become corrupted. The laptop does not seem to be overheating and the fans are clean.

We've contacted Dell as he has a 3yr Complete care package, he's had the HDD replaced multiple times. The last time he sent in the laptop for serving they returned it with nothing fixed, they said they replaced the fans but the fans are still the original ones as I accidentally scratched the bottom side of the fans and they're the exact same one .....

Dell :: Replacing An I9400 Keyboard With An XPS M1710 Silver One

Sep 6, 2007

Well the black keyboard that comes on the 9400/E1705 is a tad bit too loud for my taste. I was thinking of swapping it out for the M1710 keyboard, if its any quieter. At least mine here on the 9400 you can hear a mile away if you're typing away, and the "Enter" key is especially noisy.

Dell :: I9400 Is Dead, Is This The Normal Treatment For Support

Jan 1, 2008

My i9400 died last Tuesday. While sitting idle on a marble topped end table the fans went wide open for 15 seconds and then it just turned off. Not shut down, just dead. I went to bed figuring this must have been an overheat protection shutdown and tried to crank it up the next day and nothing. Hit the power button and the green light blips once and thats it.

I have the top of the line warranty and next day service so Dell came out 2 days later (not next day but close enough at first) and replaced the MB and fans. This got us nowhere. He gets on the phone with Dell and they send another MB and Processor as well for the next day.

Visit two with another MB and new processor produced nothing again. The field tech (pretty knowledgeable) said that this would have to go back to dell and that I needed to call them.

So I call them and they say that a third visit would be required I said fine send whoever, this thing is not coming back to life and my business is being severely hampered by this notebook being down. They try to re-diagnose over the phone and corectly come to the conclusion (again) that the computer is toast.

My problem is this: They finally conceded to me returning this $4000 brick to them but I could not get a i9400 loaner overnighted to throw my HD in to get back up. I've got my HD out and in an external enclosure but this really slows things down finding files and loading apps on another computer that is already slower to start with.

I've got a business to run and it is running slower with this laptop being down. I was told by Dell it would take 2 days to get a box to return the computer in and then 5-8 days to repair it and then shipping after that. An exchange would be up to 2 weeks total turnaround time...........

Dell :: Take This E1705 To It's Max

Jan 20, 2008

I was considering selling my E1705 before but after some research and input from others I came to the conclusion that I should just stick my my E1705 because the resale value is much lower than I expected (I wanted to sell my machine, get a small laptop for mobility and build a desktop).

So now I want to just upgrade my laptop to the max and maybe just get a shitty eee pc as my 2nd laptop to carry around everywhere.

Where is room to upgrade, things I am considering so far to up is
a T7600 CPU, 4GB 667mhz RAM, 200gb 7200rpm HD, GTX is a maybe... don't know how much difference there will be. How should I change my choices and what else can I upgrade.

Inspiron E1705, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA

Dell :: 4Gb In E1705

Oct 5, 2007

This week I finally made the choice to get 2x2G sticks for my E1705. They arrived today and I installed them as soon as I could.

But unfortunately Windows XP Pro SP2 wouldn't start completely (it froze somewhere in the screen with the logo and the moving bar underneath). Windows does start in dafe mode and reports 3.25G.

The funny thing is, Mac OS X does load completely and run without a problem. I even mentions 4G installed.

I did a quick memtest and the sticks seem to be ok. I changed the order of the sticks and no difference.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is there a setting I need to change on my Windows. Or would I need to reinstall it (doesn't seem logical).

Dell :: E1705 With NMI

Mar 8, 2008

Purchased a e1705 in June of 2006. Started having the NMI parity errors within a month.

Contact Dell and they swapped out memory. The problem seemed to be better, but still linger for a while with the NMI errors. Installed Vista on the system and cant remember ever having an error. Then I installed Counter-strike, and started getting the error back. Recontacted Dell and they replaced the motherboard and ram. That hosed my vista install where printing, control panel, stopped working. Backed up my data and reinstalled after formating the drive Windows XP using the Dell disks I received. Now the system isnted on for more than 5-15 minutes without an NMI error.

Oh, now dell is wanting me to send my laptop to a depot where they can make sure its fixed. I will now be without any laptop, working or not for around 2 weeks.

I have the 4 year extended warranty with accident protection.

Dell :: E1705 Vs. M1710

Feb 17, 2008

So I bought an Inspiron 9400 bout two years ago, its a piece of shi*t ... i've had i dunno about 6 or 7 service calls now .... ANYWAYS

When I went to purchase a laptop I was looking at both the XPS and the laptop I decided on (E1705), and the only thing I noticed that was different was that the XPS was substantially more expensive, and had a different look ...

Not to insult anyone's taste or anything, but the look of the XPS is tacky as hell lol ... I mean, its inundated with the word XPS everywhere (even on the touchpad ... ?), i've never seen one in person ... maybe someone can explain to me haha

Anyways, the purpose of this post isn't about the aesthetic differences between the two series of laptops lol. A friend of mine who is in the market to purchase a laptop has asked me what the differences were ... and I couldnt answer him (hence why i'm posting)

What i'm asking then is, other then its shell, assuming the CPU, GPU, RAM, display are identical what is it that makes the XPS better and at a much higher price? Is the motherboard better, or are XPSes less prone to random breaking? If anyone can differentiate the two for me i'd appreciate it, so I can help my friend out before he drops $2.5k on a laptop

I've also dried the DVI-hdmi adapter...instead of DVI-hdmi cable which shouldn't make a difference but I gave it a shot....

This notebook is used for occasional gaming (counter strike source) and has become my desktop replacement.

Dell :: (refurbished) E1705

Aug 12, 2007

I bought my system from Dell about right at 3 years ago. I got an Inspiron 9100 with 3 years of CC for around $1700

P4 2.8 with HT Prescott
512 MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 MB
15 inch crappy screen
40GB 5400RPM HDD
CDR/RW DVD drive
XP PRO

They replaced my computer with an e1705

Core 2 Duo 1.73 T5300
2 GB DDR2-667 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 256MB
17 inch WXGA Samsung
8xDVDRW drive
80GB 5400 RPM HDD
XP PRO

I was shocked that I got upgraded so much. Then I started reading some of the reviews of the x1400 and it was terrible. I benchmarked this computer and the graphics did a little better then my old system. I played some of the games that i usually played on my older computer and they ran a lot worse on this computer. I don't know if i should complain about the graphics card, since they did give me a huge upgrade and all.

Also, does anyone know about how they work their warranties. When i got this system and registered it on their website it said that i had three years of CC warranty left. Then when the warranty went dead on my other computer so did the warranty on my new one! If I knew that was going to happen i would had bought the extended warranty before it went dead.
