Dell :: Inspiron 640 M Hinges Loose ?
Aug 17, 2009
My 640M is still working fine but the LCD hinges seem to be a little loose. i.e. if I tilt the laptop a little, the lcd seems to bend on either side I bend it upon.
I noticed that my friends' laptops - Dell inspirons but newer models ( 14, 1420) etc do not have this loose LCD hinges.
I dont remember if the hinges were loose when a new laptop arrived, but its been about 3 years now and I notice this

I have had my M1530 for abut half a year. At the very beginning I noticed that the screen is not very stiff, for example I the screen lid can be moved by about 2 cm almost with no effort (with one finger) also the he hinges (the bar inside) moves up few millimeters when closing the lid.
It's noticeable when looking at the hinge, and also I can feel that from the force used to move the screen for first 2 cm. The problem des not seem to increase and for the first time I thought its normal, but some time ago I saw an identical XPS without that problem.

I purchased a new lid and hinges from eBay for my XPS WLED M1330. I currently have the red cover, but the X on the XPS logo peeled off and was lost, so I bought a new black one. It is just the lid and hinges, not the screen.

I have noticed the hinges are really tight and it takes two hands to open it. 1 to hold the bottom and one to lift the screen. Will this get better over time or do i just live with it?

I have a Dell Studio 15 laptop and one of the USB ports on the right side of my laptop has become loose (I think it happened when I knocked it on something). Whenever I put a USB into the port I can wriggle it side to side & I can't do this with my other ports & until recently I couldn't do it with this one either.
When I put a USB into the port it isn't detected but if I push down on the casing above the port it sometimes is detected but the second I stop pushing down it's undetected again.

I just received my new M4400 and like it. However, the 9 cell battery I have seems to fit a bit loose on the left side of the computer.
While not a huge issue, it is annoying. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I send the battery back or could it be the internal latch that is loose?

I just purchased the Acer Aspire AS1410-2920 laptop from Newegg.com, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm very much in love with this laptop, but I noticed right away that the hinges on it appear to be loose. If the laptop is sitting on my desk and I just use it like normal, it seems fine to me. But, the second I get up with it the display falls down (away from the keyboard area), and it did this while I rode my train into the office.
I contacted Newegg.com about doing a replacement via their online chat system, and of course they said I have to call them in order to get the RMA and UPS shipping label. Then, I have to ship the product back and I won't get a replacement for 7-10 business days AFTER they receive & process my return. Talk about a hassle but I suppose that's how it is anywhere you go. My biggest concern is that I may receive another new 1410 that has the exact same problem with loose hinges.
Has anyone here experienced loose hinges on their 1410?
Are the hinges on your 1410 nice and firm? I have a friend who has a smaller Acer netbook (9" screen), and the hinges on his are extremely firm in that there's no give if you shake it (not that I would shake my laptop on a regular basis).

As the title says I'm looking for some new parts.
I'm currently in need of new:
LCD hinges

palm rest

Anyone know the part numbers for these or could you reference me to a parts list or online site that would sell these parts?

I have an XPS M1530, 18 months old, and I am very happy with it.
Over the past few weeks I have noticed a problem with the display, any white parts of the screen image show as red or turquoise colour heavily lined, or black text may have a red halo.
I can easily correct this by changing the angle of tilt of the screen....

I just bought a brand spankin new HP dv5t series, got it 3 days ago, i inspected it when i got it out of the box and it was beautiful.
However a little later I noticed that the power (cord side) that you plug in to charge was pretty loose.
Now just today I tripped on the long part of the cord... it moved the laptops position on the desk a few inches, and enough to pull it out of the box in the middle of the cord, and it feels even loser.. but I cant tell if it really did, i might just be paranoid.
This worries me because on my last two laptops they were pretty tight and had no play in them, both of the ended up broken.

If you have an Phoenix BIOS (there should be a small logo at the right lower corner..)
And with a broken/desoldered/loose GPU (black screen with blue bars)
Can you press Help Win+B (or ctrl-b, alt-b) then turn on the laptop. Does it make beeps?, if you put in a USB floppy disk, with a disk inside, does it try to read it?
If so it might be possible to rewrite the BIOS so that it will initialize the "Vidock/hwtools.net" pci-express adapter FIRST.
Just like how in BIOS you can "set it" (via setup) to initialize the AGP or PCI video card FIRST, or PCI-E or PCI video card FIRST.

My Vaio is just out of warranty and it's always had a bit of a clicky odd left-button.
I've noticed that it is gradually getting worse so I'm expecting it to break soon. I should have had it done while the computer was in warranty, but I've heard bad things about their service centre, and they'd probably have charged me for the repair anyway. I did ask them about it toward the end of the warranty period and they wanted me to email them Admin passwords and then pick up the computer for an undisclosed period. I just didn't fancy it - my fault.
Anyway, I have several friends at work who are IT technicians and one of them will have a look. I haven;t found a service manual for the CR series yet, but I'm assuming the buttons are part of the mount for the trackpad and can either be replaced individually or the mount (or pad) can be replaced.
It's just over a year old and I'm thinking about boosting the RAM, HD and upgrading to W7, but on the other hand, I'm not convinced the machine is going to survive another 2-3 years...

I have a HP9743CL sitting next to my old 2529Cl and both connect to my home wireless network. Two weeks ago the 9743CL worked fine but now it drops the connection after 4 minutes. I turned off the firewall on the laptop thinking maybe it was blocking something. That didn't help.
I turned off the firewall on the router Westell327W and that didn't help. in the mean time my 2529Cl just keeps plugging along. staying connected. Is there a setting I accidentally changed.
When it dies and I try to have internet explorer fix the problem if comes back with a statement saying my firewall is blocking port 80. Well, now that everything is turned off what is the cause.
I was running zonealarm on the 9743CL and the stock firewall on the Westell327W.

I have a Vostro 1500, which I bought 10 months ago. About 3 months ago the screen became loose and wobbled about 10 degrees when computer was moved or if I was on the train and it went over bumps. I tightened the screws as advised but this did not have any real effect. Dell engineer came and replaced the back cover with new hinges, (as they though hinges may be broken/at fault but they were fine,) but some wobble was still noticable so he ordered a new base. He came today and took the screen out complete with all the screen casing out of the old base, and put it into the new base, but still wobbled, so just put it back in the old base as it wouldn't have cured the problem.
Now yesterday, after he put the new back cover on, he had to take the plastic around the front of the screen off. After he put it together I noticed that the screen is no longer flush with the plastic surround and it annoys me! Am I just being finicky/picky or should I ask them to fix it?

Guide to Switching your Inspiron 9300/M170 WUXGA into the Inspiron 9400/M1710:
You can't simply replace the display screens. The instructions below must be followed for your screen to work properly.
Required Materials:
- Small Phillips (I used #0 Phillips)
- Either 2 monitors (9400 and 9300) or part #YPNL-N017B (Google the # to buy it).
Step 1: Remove the display assembly. Dell has an excellent guide for this on their website.
[url] Click on Display)
Step 2: Remove the LCD Bezel (the gray trim around the screen). This requires removing the screws under the circular pads. I used a small flathead to pry open the bezel.
Step 3: Remove the 8 screws around the sides of the LCD. This will make it so your screen can be taken out. Do not worry about any screws on the top, they are for other things.
Step 4: At the bottom of the screen, there is a green circuit board. On the left side, you will see a screw holding the wire down. Remove this.
Step 5: Remove the LCD screen from the case.
Step 6: Look at the bottom circuit board again. This is the board we need to swap! Disconnect the 2 connections on the board. There should be on on the bottom and one on the side that is white.
Step 7: There will be 3 silver screws holding the circuit to the screen. Remove these screws. Note: This requires a very small phillips. I used a #0 Phillips to do the trick.
Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for your other monitor OR if you don't have another monitor...you will need to buy an inverter chip. The mfg # is YPNL-N017B. If you google that number, you should find a bunch of sites willing to sell it.
Step 9: Simply swap the bottom circuit boards between monitors or insert the new one that you bought.
Step 10: Follow steps 1-7 in reverse to reconnect everything back up! Before screwing everything back up. I suggest you plug it in first to test it out.
Congratulations. Your WUXGA LCD will now work properly on the Inspiron 9400. For anyone wondering, you MUST replace the bottom circuit board or the brightness controls will not work. You brightness will be stuck at the lowest setting and nearly impossible to see.

I am looking into replacing my old Dell Inspiron 6400, as it has been excellent -I think I should buy another Dell!
I am looking at the new Inspiron 15, which has a 15.6" display.
Can anyone tell me whether the actual laptop itself is bigger or smaller than my current 6400? I am interested in knowing width.
I see a lot of dead space on my 6400, and hopefully Dell realized this, and instead of making another 15.4" with dead space, they made use of this and gave a better display!
