We replaced the motherboard. Then it would start up but then shut back down. Swapped out the video card on a hunch, then we got a white screen with an odd color line through it periodically.
We can plug it into another monitor and it works fine so we're getting output.
Would this mean my screen is shot? If so, are there other models that will have compatible screens (17" XPS, for example)
I have an Inspiron 15 Intel N5040 I purchased 10 months ago. I am noticing that on photographs (like my screensaver background) there are fuzzy lines across the screen kind of like straight sunrays at an angle. The problem is, my prior Inspiron had the same problem after about 16 months and the end result was an unusable laptop because the screen went out completely.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a XPS L702X, purchased it last year at the beginning of the summer. After a couple of weeks of use, the colors would change on the screen and the screen would start flickering. The dell people did a remote assistance and updated the bios and graphics software. It stopped for a little while. Then the colors would just change but not flickering yet. Then it started all over again, but now it would flash and lock up my keyboard, but I could still control the mouse with an external one. So I got a live CD to see if that works and it runs, but the screen still flashes white and gets static. I can see the desktop and move the mouse but it eventually turns all white and static comes through the speakers. Now the computer will not even turn on at times, it sounds like it is booting up, but then just shuts off.
I have also tried doing a system restore but it will not stay on long enough to go through the process, this last time it shut down completely before even finishing.
I have also tried using an external monitor and it will go through until the screen starts flickering.
I have a inspiron 3520 laptop. A little over a year old. Lately my screen has been going white with black lines and swirls going through it. Sometimes it will clear right up and sometimes I have to restart the computer. I have tried installing My Dell Client but it will not install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy dell laptop worked perfectly for around 6 months. After that i have had to use my TV as a monitor via HDMI. Basically on start up the screen goes black and slowly turns to white with multi-coloured lines running vertically down it. It first started to play around not long after i had bought it, the screen would freeze and seem to slowly become faded and lose colour but if i flipped the screen up and down a little it would work fine again but after abut a month of being able to jiggle it back to a working state it completely went. I have spoken to a local PC reapir shop who have quoted me around £150-175 to fix this.
I have researched this problem thoroughly on the internet to find that this particular model is prone to issues like mine and others in regards to its screen. Using my TV as a monitor, the visuals are all fine.
I have downloaded the latest drivers for literally everything. Bios, Graphics... You name it, I have tried it in multiple attempts to try and fix this.
My laptop is no longer under warranty but this issue seems to affect a lot of this particular model.
I have a dell M5010 laptop. There was a problem with the screen of my laptop (diagonal lines coming when i opened "my computer" window) for which the dell support replaced my screen while my laptop was under warranty. The screen was replaced in the month of february 2013 and my warranty expired on 3rd of March 2013. Now after two months of my screen replacement i am experiencing white outs which is quite random and happens at start up as well as while i am working on my laptop. After the white screen remains for a few seconds the screen comes back with vertical line transition.
This particular model of dell had lots of problem from the very beginning and had been a sort of bad luck for me. At first the hard disk along with optical drive was replaced and then the screen. And now the screen still after replacement is showing new defects.

seems to happen when i'm in any application. it'll kick me out and i'll have a white screen with blue or purple vertical lines. bought new in June of this year and it's been happening almost daily for the past 3 months.
2 days ago, i finally decided to reinstall windows XP. i did this and i still have the problem and it seems to have gotten worse. just today i got the error 4 times! and the last time i just got a solid blue screen. it's never happened this often before.
i called dell tech support. they seem to think it's bad ram so they're sending me new ram to try out. it's not the BSOD... it just mostly the white w/ stripes screen or, like the last time, a solid blue screen... no text.

I would like to know if it is possible to fix it without changing the screen, mainly because it is close to impossible finding a WSXGA screen in the country where I am staying now.
Suddenly today a one-inch wide white vertical stripe appeared down the screen of my Inspiron 9400 laptop, about a sixth of the way into the screen from the left side. There is simply no image in this space, regardless of the application. This includes Windows XP from boot-up onwards. The initial screen on start-up is not affected, however, which leads me to believe this is a software problem, rather than a hardware problem.
I have had my Inspiron for 4 1/2 years with no problems until today. How to correct this.

I also noticed that the bottom left of the screen disattached, but I was able to put it back in. I understand that 8 beeps mean LCD failure. I tried to use the last known good configuration and it started out fine but I got the black screen again. I can't go into the safe mode, it only goes as far as loading the files. I tried booting from the cd to do a repair but that options says there are no problems. I attached an external monitor and I get the same black screen with the white cursor. I am running Vista Home as my operating system.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy screen recently started getting a lot of faded white lines going horizontal and vertical across my screen causing the screen to blur/disorientated my screen. I can still navigate just fine but there is clearly something wrong here. I've plugged it into my hdmi's port on my tv and the image is just fine. Is it a wiring problem maybe? The lines are getting slightly more extreme and a little more colored... They lines of windows extend around the border all the way to the end if the screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recent;y installed a version of windows on my Dell Laptop, Inspiron 6000. I worked for a week or two then when I turned it on a couple days ago, it won't go pass the black screen with the blinking white line. A user some where on this site on an other post that had similar problems said that it to re-install and delete the existing partition and create another one with 120GB. I did but when creating another partition, I tried to type in the 122880 MB (122880MB = 120GB), and upon pressing ENTER, the numbers 122880 goes back to the number of MB of the partition disk space I had previously. I hope this all make sense. I do not have the money to buy another laptop. I have a Windows XP CD, but not the original. The laptop worked fine before with this version.
To fix the blinking line on the start-up black screen, all I need to do is to re-install windows XP and change the partition to 120GB. But every time I try to change the number of MB, it doesn't work but reverts back to the original number. Is there another way to fix the blinking-white-line-on-the-start-up-screen?
Also, I tried to use the repair control...doesn't work.

I have Inspiron 9300. Unfortunately, my geforce 6800 died and I bought as a replacement x300 which was installed by a laptop repair service (they fixed other thins too.
It was due to power surge). Everything works but when I boot up the computer or when the display is set to be turned off in the power settings in Windows instead of being actually turned off the display is on and is all white.
Also brightness regulation does not work via Fn +arrows keys and is set to maximum and the white color is so intense that I get a headache after a couple of hours staring at the screen.
i have an insprion 1520, with a 8600gt..i have hardly used it yet, probably has 10 hours on it....
i like the laptop..some don, t...but i think the silver with blue lights looks cool.,and the chasis is solid...not like the cheap plastic cases i see on the new laptops today .....
I installed 2 - 1GB RAM chips into my 8600 but it only recognized 1 GB of RAM memory.

I replaced the hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with a new one. The old hard drive wouldn't boot and failed several Dell hard drive diagnostic tests.
Now a message pops up when the laptop is powered on, "Hard-disk #***********-595B, the system primary HDD is protected by a password authentication system..."
I am repairing this laptop for a client of mine. I don't remember a password prompt before replacing the old hard drive, but now the laptop won't even let me enter SETUP without entering a password.
I have a customer who has a Inspiron 8600. The machine boots to the post screen then shuts down. He told me he was installing the chipset from a dell cd but it was the wrong Dell Cd and wrong chipset for his 8600. How do you reset the cmos and uninstall the chipset and install the correct chipset.
