Dell XPS M1210 :: General Failure Error 36000 After Trying System Restore
Mar 27, 2013I've tried to restore system to factory default by pressing Ctrl+F11 in my XPS M1210. After confirmation to proceed I got the message: General failure error 36000.
I re-installed Windows XP but I'm having troubles with drivers not installed by the Windows re-install process.Â

Feb 27, 2008Since vista has come out, I have installed it three times to give it a chance, and all three times I was upset about how slow it seemed, but my new M1710 came with a license for vista ultimate and I just received the install DVD from Dell and was wondering. As of today, a clean install of vista with ALL updates and some tweaking, would it affect my FPS in games enough to notice? Would it help if I upgraded to 4gb? (3.2gb addressable)

Setting: 8 mins of running Rthdribl on a M1330; HWMonitor read-out for max. GPU temp in Celsius.
Mine would be 104°C. After another 2mins the GPU clocked down, resulting in "only" 98°C.

Aug 16, 2009I'm just starting my 5th year with my Inspiron 6000. Bought it in August 2005 for just under $800 out the door.
I was planning on buying a new one but I realized that everything in that price range these days isn't really a huge improvement over what I already have, and since the thing still works, there's really no need to upgrade.
I have had to make a few fixes over the years (upgraded HD, RAM, new keyboard, screen/inverter, battery, top bezel, power jack, power adapter) but at this point it's almost a matter of pride to be able to fix something for $15 or $20 by just buying the part on eBay and maybe spending 30-60 minutes with a screwdriver.

Dell :: Warranty Poll On Laptops Preliminary
Mar 16, 2008I took statistics and numerical analysis a LONG time ago in college, and I'm afraid my poll questions will not be as relevant as they could be, or could cross over from one group to another. Who out there has some expert advise? You can either post here or PM me. I will make a thread for each generation (i9300/xpsg2/m170, i9400/m1710, xps 1730, etc). Maybe having the XPS's on their own? I don't want to thin the numbers out too much. These are the poll questions I postulate:
-it's worked fine! (regardless of if you have an active warranty or not)
-some parts are broken but I don't trust dell warranty, prob. end up on ebay searching for some.
-i've returned bad parts and gotten good ones, and now it works
-the computer died and I got a replacement which was better
-the computer died and I got a replacement which was worse
-the computer died and I have yet to get a replacement confirmation (not necessarily in your hands yet)

Dell :: General TV Tuner Question For SXPS 16
Jun 7, 2009So i did a little searching about TV Tuners, but i'm still a little bewildered on the topic. I basically need someone to clear up some questions I have about TV tuners. Here are a few questions:
What channels do the "antennas" that come with some tuners pick up? The same as good ol fashion bunny ears would?
If I just had a coaxial cable coming from the wall or cable box (and a functioning cable outlet) could i just connect that to the tv tuner (with the right converter) and get the basic cable channels that you would if you connected that coaxial cable straight to a tv?

Jan 21, 2010I know the system isn't that old. But you know how it is in the tech world. I have a inspiron e1705 I will list the specs below. I just wondering how many out there are still using this system faithfully. My systems is still running smoothly, but I just made a trip out to a my local tech store "Micro Center" & saw alot of new desktop replacement laptops. I've been out of the big laptop world for awhile since my everyday comp is a xps m1330 which I am thinking of selling since i just fell in love with the upcomming alienware m11x thats coming out soon since I only get about 3.5 hrs of battery on it with a 9 cell & was looking at getting a netbook but hate screens less then 11'. Well if the alienware is close to what they are predicting the m1330 is gone. But as of the e1705 its pretty much maxed out, do you think its worth selling and upgrading to something new or just sticking with it, or I wont get much for it.

Aug 20, 2009I'd like to replace the fan in my laptop (Dell's Latitude d830) with a faster/better one. From what I've seen, most people seem to think that this is impossible.
I, however, find this hard to believe that Dell would have included the only possible fan that's compatible with this laptop, or that this particular fan is the best possible cooling option.
Why is it so hard to upgrade in the first place? I'm sure it can be done, I've opened up my laptop a few times in the past and it's not exactly rocket science .....

Sep 27, 2014On my first windows install on my Zbook 17, the OS installed the System Reserved partition on the flash cache SSD. I figured I'd do a reinstall when I ordered and installed a 1tb SSD. I removed all HDDs and the flash cache, installed the OS, then turned off the computer and re-installed the flash cache. Now when I try to boot it gives me 5 blinks on the caps/num lock along with a lovely black screen.

Aug 14, 2014I have several HP 8530p and I getting the num lock & cap lock leds blinking 5 times which indicates a general system board error. Bought new boards still getting the same issue. Note all the units will boot to windows fine, but there is a 10-15 sec delay in hard drive response when operating pc. The mouse is real time responsive but once you clink on a item the lag shows up. What to look for as the problem, CPU , Memory changed, Fans, Cooling system. Bios versions have been updated, I've torn the unit down, cleaned and added new thermal paste to CPU, GPU and added copper shims to promote better heat transfer. The system Diagnostics indicates hardware is ok.

Dell :: Death Of A M1210
May 19, 2010So I got my Dell XPS M1210 way back at the start of 2007. It served me faithfully up until last week when it died. Basically when I turn it on I can hear the hard drive spinning up and the power light comes on but nothing else, not even the hard drive access light. I'm pretty certain either the motherboard or CPU(or both) are fried. I can see that the CPU fan is not spinning when I turn the laptop on. I disassembled the laptop and gave it a good cleaning, something I probably should of done long ago. The exhaust hole for the CPU fan was nearly totally clogged with dust which is the reason why I think something is fried (Also the temps had been a lot higher than normal the last few weeks). Anyway some questions you guys might be able to help with:
- Should I bother replacing the motherboard or would it just make more sense financially to get a new netbook of some sort?
- Any other suggestions on what I can try to fix the problem?
- Is there anything of practical use I can salvage from my m1210 besides the hard drive?
Dell :: Help On Dead XPS M1210
Jan 24, 2009I have been using my Dell XPS M1210 for 2.5 years now. It has been a great laptop, only big issue has been a dying battery which is something that has occurred to most close friends that own the same model. Recently, my laptop shut down on its own. After this occurred, it wouldn't start up again. When I hit the power button, no sound comes out of the computer. There is no noticeable hard drive spin, fan noise or anything. The screen does not flicker or show any sign of life. The power LED shines for 5 seconds and then goes down.
I tried FN+Power button to no success. Also, if I leave the power button pushed down, the power LED flashes after 5 seconds and continues to stay on until the next 5 seconds doing a cycle that only ends once I stop pushing the button. I tested my battery on another XPS M1210 and it worked well. Also, I tested another battery on my XPS and it did the same thing.
I am currently out of warranty. I don't know what to do to test the failing component. Since I don't know what the specific problem could be, I don't know how much a repair could end up being.
Dell :: Dead XPS M1210
Oct 14, 2008My XPS M1210 laptop is dead right now. It happened last friday morning when I am trying to turn on the laptop. After I press the power button, the hard drive sounds spinning, but after a second, it remains silent (Same for the cd-rom). Only the power led is on.
All other leds are dead, not even the bluetooth, cap led, number lock led. So I connected my laptop to a external monitor, but nothing is showed. I have inserted a boot disk, but it doesn't work. I also tried to press Fn and power button method, but it still doesn't work as well.
Right now, I am suspecting my hard drive is broken or some virus infected my laptop because a day before my laptop is still working, my laptop got infected with some virus.
When I opened my inbox, my laptop suddenly got out of control. The cursor jumped around the screen and there was some bar code surrounded the cursor. But after I restarted my comp and did some virus scan, nothing was found. However, the next day, I turned on my laptop, the screen/images were all messed up. The images were chopped into piece. But in safemode, things are looking perfect. So I shutted it down and planned to reformat the laptop. AFter that, I am not able to turn it on again.

Jul 12, 2007I wanna get rid of my inspiron 9100 and carry around something smaller. I've currently got the mr9800 video card and do some low detail gaming (mostly old games...BFV, BF1942 demo, WoW). I do need to use it for Second Life as part of my job. I also do presentations and stuff for work.
The cost/benefit ratio of lugging this thing around in comparison to its performance is waning. I've been thinking of forgetting the whole desktop replacement thing and take a cut in gaming performance for portability. The portable computers are getting to a point that even with low end graphics card they are comparable to my 9100 with the mr9800 (almost).
I've been looking at the m1210 with keen interest...it's pretty compact and cool. But, I've read the extensive thread about complaints related to the screen. If I went with the m1210 I'd be getting the AV package in hopse of the AUO screen which is supposed to be marginally better.
I've also been looking at the m1330 because of the LCD screen...it's a little bigger, but lighter. It's also about a thousand dollars more expensive (decked out with a decent screen, video card, blue tooth, etc.).
When all is said and done I'm looking at nearly identical specs, except for the LCD screen, the fingerprint doohickey, and the new dx10 capable video card. And, like I said, the m1330 is bigger, but lighter. In your opinion, is it worth it? Bear in mind that if I went with the m1330 I'd have to wait until there was some sort of coupon/sale or it turns up in the outlet...cause I can't drop 2,000 on it. I'm looking at 1200 tops. The m1210 is available decked out for 1100 (including tax). I'm just a little nervouse about the LCD problems...and the older technology.
