Dell :: Mini 9, 8GB Almost Nothing Installed, No Storage
Feb 16, 2009
got the Mini 9 at Best Buy yesterday, with 1GB Ram and 8GB HDD.
The HD measured 7.1 GB in Windows with about 3GB free.
I took McAfee Security off it (don't like it and only 30-day trial), loaded AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender, Word 2000, and IE 7 and the latest Windows security upgrades.
Now it has less than 1GB left free. (And .NET framework 3.5 wouldn't load - possibly due to memory).
I don't know if there are temporary files that I could delete, but I am concerned that in six months, she won't be able to load security fixes b/c the HD is full.
How are others handling this, and is this typical?
I am considering telling her to return it for an Asus with a real HD. I know there are 16GB and 32GB SSD cards out there, along with external HD's, but don't want to deal with that expense and bother.
I have aspire ethos 5951g with a 750G HDD and this laptop have a one empty mini PCIe slot and i want to mini PCIe storage for system installing .......
May I use this slot to add mini PCIe SSD ?
And if i may what is the type recommended for this model ?
I went and put in an SD card to download pictures... Usually i would get a pop-up that asks me what program do i want to open it with.
I would always use Picasa 3. I don't get that pop up anymore nor can i access anything to open it up with a 3rd party. I have to go in and click on Computer and right click on drive F to open File from there manually..
Had to replace a DVD drive in my Inspiron 15z. Its in shows up in bios but not in my computer. Seems to have something to do with Intel Rapid Storage. When I look at the Rapid Storage Info it shows the dvd in the same area as the SSD that is installed as a cache. Looks like I need to change the port for the dvd...
I might be heading to the US and am looking into getting a new Z11 series. There are tons of models from what
I can see- do all them have the basic stuff like back-lit keyboard and light-sensors? Also, all of them have GT330 as well with Optimus technology correct
I just received a refurbished Inspiron 17R SE with the HD and SSD pre-installed. I want to use the Intel Smart Response feature to speed up the hard disk with my SSD. When I open the Intel Rapid Storage utility I see no accelerator button. How do I enable this feature?
I have the BIOS SATA type set to Smart Response. It arrived with that setting. I don't know of any other setting that could affect this.

When installing the driver from the dv3t latest driver thread ([Drivers] HP dv3, Compaq CQ35 / CQ36 (INTEL)) my computer refused to start up. I had to system restore to start up again.
I want to get this driver because of the performance advantage it states, or at least find out if there is an advantage.
I've recently purchased a new hard drive and continuously recieve an error message when I try to install the software for it. Here is the exact issue I'm having: [URL] .......
I've confirmed the BIOS is locked in AHCI on my laptop model, so the solution is to update the SATA storage driver to the latest native Microsoft driver, but I don't know how to do that. The only driver available on my system is "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller"
Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (Fresh Install)
Laptop Model: HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
Hard Drive: Western Digital Black2 Dual Drive
Error: Unsupported/Incompatible SATA storage driver
Driver to Update: Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller
I would like to know is it possible to add second drive into the system. Cause i saw from other acer website, they do have laptop version with 1tb hdd+ 256ssd dual storage version.
So this new Intel Rapid Storage supposedly images your Drive onto an external drive... Doesn't this accomplish the same thing as Windows7 backup utility?
I have been told by sales that the W530 will NOT support SSD's larger than 256GB. I wonder if it is sales gimmick since the SSD uses the SATA3 interface that works with standard drives > 256GB. But before I go on a limb and buy a big SSD, I need to verify if I am wrong.
Using a 480GB or 512GB SSD drive in the W530 thinkpad?
I received my Precision M4400 with Win 7 Pro x64 pre-installed, and using it for audio recording and playing everything works great. However, since Win7x64 drivers do not exist for some of my audio devices,
I decided to put in a new HD (same as the original, only larger) double-booting XPx86 and Win7x64. So I installed XP on one partition of the new HD and Win7x64 from the CD that shipped with the M4400. Big problem...
Neither XPx86 nor the re-installed Win7x64 are able to deliver anything but crackles and pops and noise only slightly resembling music. Forget about recording...
I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector?
Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000?
My hard drive was formatted; everything, recovery and all. I went to install Win 8 back on it from a CD I have, it go's all the way thru the steps up to where you you pick a Drive to install on, and a messege appears saying; No Hard Drive detected- install Mass Storage Driver for detection of Hard Drive. What I need to install, and where to get it. It will not install an Operating system for the life of me.
My 5 months old SSD crashed and I replaced it with a Macrium created mirror. Everything seems to work except the computer no longer recognizes USB drives. The USB drives are good (checked on other devices), I've removed and reinstalled all USB hubs and drivers - the chip drivers and bios are up to date and the USBs are enabled in the BIOS AND I've done several virus scans (online and local) in safe mode (Malwarebytes, Spybot, ESET, Defender, AVG, Housecall). The USBs are recognized on boot but once Win7 boots the USB for storage devices no longer work.... however, the USB recognize keyboards and the mouse. Guessing a new OS install will fix it, however, I would rather not reinstall everything.
I'm using Windows 8.1 on a t431s. I'm having this problem where none of my external storage is being recognized. Under "Device Manager" any sort of external storage I plug in ends up under "Other devices". When I click on the device, I get Code 28 "The drivers for this device are not installed." Trying to update the driver brings me nowhere. The devices don't appear under disk management.
What's weird is that other USB peripherals such as mice and USB headphones don't have any problem.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Updated the BIOS. Used Lenovo's SCCM package for Windows 8.1 Tried installing the individual drivers for each hard drive.
I got a T430s with the nvidia nvs 5400m and when i try to update drivers etc via the lenovo system update I got a message that I should update the Intel rapid storage driver to 11.2.0.1006, and that isn't even the latest version, but anyway I mark the update and let it install and then reboot. But when I search for updates I have to update the same driver to the same version I just installed. I have tried to remove the driver via device manager, but without results.
In my HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook 15-4010nr notebook there are 1 HDD and 1 SSD (30GB). The SSD was used for acceleration in Intel Rapid Storage initially.
But I reseted it to Available in Intel Rapid Storage and now I cannot “Enable acceleration” again, because there is no such a command in the program’s interface – it only shows disk information at “Status” and “Manage”, but no commands at all (except Acivate LED).
I've been looking a getting a Dell Mini 9 or 12 and reading as much as I can. One thing that comes through over and over again is that the Mini 9 is just about built to be hacked and upgraded while the Mini 12 is not.
RAM upgrade Mini 9 is easy bring to 2GB with inexpensive RAM Mini 12 has1 GB RAM soldered to the motherboard and is not upgradeable.
Drives Mini 9 uses SSD. SSD drive replaceable with even larger faster SSD drives. Mini 12 has 4200 rpm hard drive.
