I just bought a refurbished Dell Studio 1555 and noticed that only the right USB port was working.
When I went into bios and disabled "outside USB ports", the left one started to work and the right one stopped working.
I want to know how much it would cost to have my sound port / speaker port replaced on my Dell Inspiron 1750 Laptop. If you plug in speakers or a headset you have to wiggle the cord to hear anything but it keeps going out. So I'd need to send it in and have it fixed. I no longer have a warranty.

I bought it at an apple store about 45 minutes from where I live... and I have set up an appointment with the genius bar (this is the only option they gave me). Do you think they will just replace it and give me another one (new)? I am a CS student taking summer classes and it is required for me to have a laptop. The laptop is only 10 days old... and I still have all of the original cd's, case, etc...
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is an inspiron 1520, about a year old now. Ever since I've had it, the hard disk drive has been making a loud, random click from time to time. Sometimes, it will click twice in the space of two minutes, sometimes it will click only once in two or three days.
Typically it's simply a loud snapping sound, like if you get a pencil and snap it against a wooden desk. It doesn't make any other sounds besides the usual hard drive sounds.
For about a quarter of a second, the system pauses. I think it's related to heat, as it happens most often while playing a graphic-intensive game.
what COM port my serial port is on my XPS M1710. Is there a program that I can find all this out in Windows that I just never knew about?
View 12 Replies View RelatedThinking about getting one to go with my m4500 which is on order. Reviews seem ok though some complain it's bulky and other complained the release mechanism wasn't great. Worst was that someone said their comp wouldn't boot when docked.

I just got my new x100e laptop today, and i really like it. But, it has a problem.
I am connected to my wireless network at home, and it works properly on my other computers at house. But on the x100e, the connection drops from time to time. Suddenly, the internet is gone, but ten seconds later, the network is back up again.
It's not that big a problem, but it is frustrating to lose the internet from time to time. It happens from every 5 minutes to once 30 minutes.
It really annoys me that my new laptop, (Just a week old) when turned on takes a very long time before it starts. After the HP logo, it will show a blank page where my cursor can be moved, then it will stay a very a long time so I end up shutting it down then turning on again and again until it finally starts up. This really takes a lot of my time specially I use my laptop for work.

I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.
The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.
What I've tried/done so far :
Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)
In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :
- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition,format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.
An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !

I try and turn that off for works and it won't let me.
I talked w/Dell tech support and they had said to uninstall and reinstall. Which didn't work.
Which they then advised to call a different department at Dell, something more associated with software issues...
i went to craigslist found a bad m1330 for 300 dollars. it had artifacts all over screen. so i took the mother board and preformed said oven trick and guess what! no more artifacts. this blew my mind

My M1530 fell, it worked for a while, but then it crashed. On Vista startup, it will bluescreen with either an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME or that IRQL_IS_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL (something like that anyway) error.
Dell's diagnostic tests gave an error on the Hard Drive DST Short Test of 2000-0142. Dell says that means a broken hard drive and they are sending a replacement.
I tried putting the M1530's hard drive into a Latitude D620, and it booted! Slowly, but it booted. I was able to see the drive and use it for a good 12 hours before I shut it down.
Please post the link for the appropriate driver. I am using vista 64 bit premium. Thank you

If I have head phones in, the sound works though them. If I unplug them, sound doesn't play through the built in speakers.

I'm not sure if I'm powering on my M3800 properly or if it's a problem.
All scenarios are after the laptop had been completely shut down and powered cable attached.
(1) Just pressing and releasing the power key powers it up sometimes
(2) When 1 doesn't work, sometimes pressing and holding the power key (for ? secs) will power it up
(3) When neither 1 nor 2 will work, sometimes double-pressing the power key will power it up
The times it doesn't power up, the power button lights, keyboard lights and goes off, then power light goes off.
It eventually always powers up (so far) but would like to make sure it's not a hardware problem.

i have an inspiron 1420, and want to bring it around school, i usually use it as a desktop at home using an external monitor(FN + F8), for some reason my laptop only works when plugged with a monitor, the laptop monitor is blank but you can see light at least, but no images whatsoever. I got it to work after reformatting the second time but not the 3rd 4th or 5th time.
I've noticed something strange though when formatting with xp, the letters were both gray and red, and when it gets to the page with the estimation(usually about 30 minutes) the picture quality was crap like 4bit.
I've noticed that when i successfully got the laptop monitor working the picture quality ran at a full 32bit
I've recently upgraded my XPS M1730 to Vista and upon doing so I've noticed that both my headphone jacks no longer work...
Only the one closest to the front of the laptop works, the middle jack doesn't work. Any ideas if this has to do with Vista?
I recently upgraded my M1330 from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, and I've lost the ability to use both audio outputs at the same time.
For example, on the front of my laptop, there are two audio outputs, so that two people can listen to something at the same time.
However, after going to Windows 7, I've lost that ability. Both of the outputs work, but you cannot use 2 headphones simultaneously.
I used the SigmaTelHD Vista drivers and no luck.
Anyone know what the cause could be, and how to get it working reliably?

When I am trying to install it its showing a message "The installer cannot run on this platform. Pls select the package for your operating system". I tried both older newer versions of the driver package downloaded from dell website.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy keyboard has intermittently been working for some time. When it works, then everything works as it should, when it does not work, the keyboard is still lit up and the mouse joystick still works, but no keys work. To get the keyboard to work again I have to reboot and shutdown many times and eventually it will work again. It only stops working after shutting down or rebooting. To me it appears to be an issue with detecting at boot up. It seems it could be either an issue with the motherboard, or the keyboard so was or to get some opinions on how to narrow it down to one or the other. I should also add, that when it does not work, you can not access the bios, or anything prior to the operating system loading, so I am 100% sure its not an OS issue. I also dual boot this laptop and the keyboard does not work in either. I can plug in a usb and that works fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDell Latitude E6400 ATG mouse pad works intermittently. It will work then stop and I have to use the keyboard nub. Then it will work. Then it will not work and it will drift to one corner. If I press on either side of the mousepad wrist rest area it will drift faster.
This is why I think it is a hardware issue.
I have updated with the most recent driver several times and it does not correct the problem. Driver is dated 1/13/2011
My laptop just shut down on me out of nowhere. The battery wasn't low, in fact it had just finished charging. It wouldn't turn back on until I plugged it back in and tried. The battery is at 86%, not charging. The battery indicator light flashes red 4 times, then white then off.
It can now only run when it is plugged in. I can start my laptop and it runs fine while plugged in but as soon as it is unplugged, it shuts off.
I assume this is a hardware issue and what caused it. Nonetheless, I used the diagnostic tools provided and found no issue and tried a system restore to no avail.
My laptop is a few weeks out of warranty (classic)...
