1. Should I reformat when my new SXPS arrives?
2. Should I reformat AGAIN when I get my free Win7 upgrade in October? (And is this possible using the upgrade DVD?)
3. IF I reformat, will all of the drivers I need be on a CD dell sends with my comp, or will I need to track down the downloads for the most recent drivers for each component of my laptop?
So its been almost two years since i got my xps m1530, and ive decided to reformat to Windows 7 x64 from Vista 32
so i can actually use my 4gigs of ram. Any advice, suggestions or problems anyone's had reformatting? Also, the drivers i got with my laptop, those won't work since they're only for Vista right?
After a few weeks using Vista on my Xps 1530 i used the guides on this site to install XP on my machine. Now I've decided to go back to vista but this seems to be a much more difficult task than i first tought.
I tried reinstalling with my Vista disk, either by starting it up in Xp or by booting directly from it. But when the installation gets halfway and needs to restart the computer i get a blue screen every time after restarting and trying to continue the installation.
Blue screen message:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your
Computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer .....
i am having some problems with my 1520 and i was wondering how to go about reformatting it back to "new"?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've owned the XPS 1330 for a little more than a year, and because of a drop recently I have had to change the hard drive and reinstall vista. I believe I didn't properly install vista on to the computer and now it doesn't restart normally as it should, sometimes it will show a blue screen or it will restart continuously.
I called tech and because I didn't purchase extended warranty I'm restricted to certain telephone lines, and they would require that I pay up a sum to have them go through and check the problem.
I had a virus on my vostro 1500 and now have no choice but to reinstsall the operating software and start from scratch.
I only have two CD's that came with my 1500, which are labeled as follows:Drivers and utilities already installed on your computer
Application already installed on your computer
but in reading the instruction booklet it says to install "the operating system reinstallation CD" and I don't show having received this CD when I got my vostro 2 yrs ago.
I just ordered a new Latitude E6500 (and my boss is paying for it!). It will come with Vista Business 32 and I plan on reformatting the machine and doing a clean install.
My new system will have:
P8600
2 GB RAM
160 GB 5400 HDD
WXGA+ LED Display
4500MHD
Integrated Webcam
Intel Wifi 5100
Dell 370 Bluetooth
I prefer to have my system as clean as possible. Is there any included software that I will need to reinstall?
i just reformatted my dv6000 and went from 32 bit vista to 64. i've gotten everything pretty well squared away except the wireless.
at first i had no wireless assistant, so i got that from an hp website, and it's there, however it won't turn on. it tells me to go to tools manager or something and turn on wireless assistant, but it's not there. what is the usual procedure in this situation.
If i reformat the sony vaio fw with an actual vista disk do i need to be worried about losing any type of function? bios, etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently caught a virus after accidentally typing faceboo k. cm instead of faceboo k. com in IE but Avast was able to take care of it. However, after restarting my HP laptop, I was unable to go into windows and it says there's a problem with startup or winload(I forgot). I used the repair startup 5 times, but to no avail. (I'm not sure if the virus is the cause of my problem).
So, I decided to use the Vista recovery DVDs and reformatted the C drive. I put the CD and HP automatically reformatted the windows partition of my drive. After it's done, the laptop was restarted and a dialog box that says "Software is being installed" appeared and there was a progress bar. But, it restarted again before the progress bar has a chance to complete. And after the laptop is restarted, the system says "BootMGR" is missing please restart using ctr alt del. After I restarted it again, a dialog box saying the recovery has failed appear. I tried this twice and failed both. The details of the error say something about QFE is missing or something.
FYI, the last time I used the Recovery cd I was brought to a blue screen (if I'm not wrong) where I can repartition, delete, or create partitions before formatting the drives. This time, I was unable to repartition or delete the drive, I was brought straight to reformating. And I was unable to use the Recovery Disk in the system; I pressed F11 and nothing happened.
I want to install mediadirect on my xps 1530. I want to follow this Dell Vista Laptop Reformat and Bloatware Removal Guide
But I have a question before beginning.
This paragraph : AHCI Concerns: On new Dell systems, they are set up to run in AHCI mode which will give you a 15% system performance boost. In many instances, the AHCI driver MUST be installed during the initial installation process for the installation to work.
Those not installing it are finding that their system may BSOD or hang during the installation and saying "Completing Installation Process". One must find the driver specific to their system either on the drivers disk that came with their laptop or at www.Dell.com in the drivers section.
Download and expand it to a USB drive or disk; the USB is preferred but it is important that you expand it on the media you just saved it to. Once done, put it aside for now .....
I am going to do a clean install on my system using Vista 64bit.
I saw the reformat and bloatware removal forum and wanted to know to I need to install the AHCI driver during install and if so where can I find it for my system,
I read somewhere that I do not need to install the driver as the Vista install cd that came with my system has the driver on it .....
I reformatted my inspiron 1520 but didnt load ahci drivers (vista didn't find them). When I try and enable ahci in the bios, i get a bsod when vista is booting. How do I get ahci enabled?
View 10 Replies View Relateddo i need to slipstream the driver into my DVD when burning the windows 7 image onto my DVD?
if i need to, how can i do that??
I am using ATA mode with XP. Lately I switched to ACHI in bios and do a clean installation.
During setup I press F6 to install ICH8M driver. The driver is loaded sucessfully from a floppy disk.
Later when the windows installer prompt whether to Install Windows, Repair or F3 to quit; I select install windows and it prompts unable to detect hdd.
I recently undertook a clean install of Vista (SP1) onto my XPS M1530. After the installation was complete,
I manually installed the Intel Matrix Storage Device drivers (AHCI).
When I view the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers list in Vista's Device Manager I see the following:
- ATA Channel 0
- Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850
does anyone know how to enable the AHCI feature on that notebook? Ther ist no possibility to change it in the bios.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am looking into installing Vista Ultimate x64 and was wondering if there is anyone here that has upgraded to vista 64 bit and what they did as far as drivers go. Mainly I am just trying to get all of the drivers ill need found before doing anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried using the ones from the Dell web site but I cannot get them to work, just incase i'm being a dill can someone link me to the correct AHCI drivers please?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am about to install Windows 7 thanks to my school's MSDNAA program and plan to use the 64-bit version (replacing Vista/32-bit). I remember from the bloatware removal thread where it is highly recommended to install the AHCI driver before installing the OS since there is a performance boost.
Should I continue to use the AHCI driver before installing Windows 7? On Dell's site, they only list vista versions, so I don't know if it is needed or if it even works with 7.
If I should keep using it, should I use the 32-bit or 64-bit driver on Dell's site? I know it sounds obvious that I would want the 64-bit driver if I am upgrading to a 64-bit OS, but I have heard people say many 64-bit drivers are not as reliable as 32-bit, so I am wondering if it matters which one I use
So just for fun I switched my drive operation mode from AHCI to IDE and installed Windows XPSP3 32bit.
I went around collecting drivers until all my devices were recognized, and then slipstreamed the drivers along with the newest Intel Matrix driver(extracted from the installer) onto a custom install DVD using nLite.
Shut down, set drive mode to AHCI, booted from CD, and then BAM! BSOD halfway through install initiation
I'm gonna clean install Win 7 on my notebook, can someone point me in the direction of an ahci driver,
as I assume I'll need it on installation like when I clean installed Vista?
I am following the bloatware removal guide and once I get to the part in the setup where I have to point it to the Intel Matrix file I put on a CD,
it eliminates all but one file that it says is compatible with my system, but then that file will not work to install
So I am trying to find the AHCI driver for my m1530 but I dont see it under drivers for my service tag, does this mean I dont need it? In my BIOS I have that as an option though!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell laptop Inspiron 11 3000 2in1. I decided to swap my Dell Sata 54000 rpm HD to a SSD M500 240GB. I went in the BIOS and it does recognize the Fixed HDD - Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 240GB. I tried installing Windows 8.1 and it would not recognize the SSD HD. What I notice if I go in the BIOS and change SATA Operation to ATA it works fine. I would like to have it on AHCI because I guess that is the latest technology for reading a HD. Any reason why I can't install it with AHCI? It also did work fine before on AHCI with the factory HD that came with the laptop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday i got my new XPS 15 9530, that's where i ran into some problems.Laptop is unable to work under AHCI in any possible configuration. It ships with 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD, i unscrew and swapped the 1TB HDD with a new Samsung 850 Pro 512GB. I started installing windows while on Intel's SRT (raid), then i noticed it and after installation was over i changed to AHCI.
Then i had to re-install, i boot using windows disk (talking about 8.1 pro) and windows installer was slow during this period... then after i reached the drive listing, i couldn`t touch either drivers. I couldn`t create partition in the samsung pro, i was receiving the 0x80070057 and a couple errors more of the same type. I started playing around with the GPT & MBR formatting, used external computer to create partitions, layouts but nothing.Whenever AHCI is on, i can`t manage to work using the Samsung 850 Pro disk.
So now i`m using Intel's SRT (raid instead) while having a single disk (samsung 850 pro) where windows is installed, while not achieving full read/write speeds because of the samsung magician that has to work with AHCI, and the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (irst). The other drive (32GB SSD) is formatted for linux, i have to disable secure boot to boot into there but that's fine. How can i get AHCI to work? I tried so many ways but clearly nothing..
got a inspiron 1545 recently with a SATA 320 gb HDD / 4gb ram with Windows Vista Home Basic. Like most of us I hate Vista. So I created a partition & installed XP.
Used a program "EasyBCD" to setup dual boot. I get the dual boot screen at startup. But only XP boots. After a little probing, came to know that there are only 2 options in the BIOS for SATA operations. AHCI & ATA. If I select ATA I can boot only to XP. If I select AHCI then I can boot only into Vista. Searched around but the solutions were a bit over my head. Really appreciate if anybody could come up with something in lay mans terms.
I bought new Inspiron 11 3147 (2 in 1 model). When "SATA Operation" is set to AHCI laptop can't detect SSD (Intel 530) in Windows 8.1 setup.
When I change "SATA Operation" to ATA Windows 8.1 can detect SSD in setup without any problem.
I think this is BIOS error. There will be any update? I can't use my SSD now.
when I got my 9400/E1705 I was always sad for not having the AHCI option available in the BIOS.
This was asked for so many times:
- "Notebooks BIOS should support AHCI"

- "Enable AHCI in Dell Notebook BIOS"

- "Please give us BIOS support for SATA AHCI mode on Inspirons!"
Please give us BIOS support for SATA AHCI mode on Inspirons!

In the Sony forum, they have found a way to activate these options even if they're not present in the BIOS:
How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop
...
The only item you'll need is a bootable DOS media. Click one of these links for instruction for creating a bootable floppy disk (with USB floppy drive) or usb stick.USB flash1 or USB flash2 or CDR (add modified table file to image before writing).
Instructions:
1.Download symcmos and copy it to your bootable DOS media. This utility is used to modify your Phoenix BIOS settings. Also, download a DOS text editor and copy it to the media if you feel comfortable editing a file in DOS.
2.Go to the BIOS by pressing F2 during start-up, or when the VAIO logo appears, and reset the settings to factory default. Save and reboot.
3.Go back to the BIOS and enable the boot from external devices option. Save and reboot.
4.Press ESC when the VAIO logo appears to bring up the boot selection menu and select the bootable DOS media. At the prompt, type "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt", without quotes, and note that there's no space in between the flag and filename. This will create a literal symbol table from the NVRAM named Default.txt which contains all the current BIOS settings. Reboot by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. If that doesn't work, hold the power button until the notebook turns off.
5.Use the DOS text editor (or boot to another OS and use a text editor there) to edit the generated Default.txt file. Change the following lines and save the modified file to something else (e.g. modified.txt):
For Napa SZs - R0112N0
