Dell Inspiron 11 :: Upgrade To SSD Will Not Work In AHCI Only In ATA?
Jan 7, 2015
I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 11 3000 2in1. I decided to swap my Dell Sata 54000 rpm HD to a SSD M500 240GB. I went in the BIOS and it does recognize the Fixed HDD - Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 240GB. I tried installing Windows 8.1 and it would not recognize the SSD HD. What I notice if I go in the BIOS and change SATA Operation to ATA it works fine. I would like to have it on AHCI because I guess that is the latest technology for reading a HD. Any reason why I can't install it with AHCI? It also did work fine before on AHCI with the factory HD that came with the laptop.
I am using ATA mode with XP. Lately I switched to ACHI in bios and do a clean installation.
During setup I press F6 to install ICH8M driver. The driver is loaded sucessfully from a floppy disk.
Later when the windows installer prompt whether to Install Windows, Repair or F3 to quit; I select install windows and it prompts unable to detect hdd.
I installed a Samsung 840EVO 500GB SSD in my Precision M4400 last weekend. I managed to get it working but it only works in ATA mode. All others modes I tried brought me to the windows splash screen quickly followed by a blue screen that flashed so quickly I couldn't read it before the system rebooted. If I let it reboot it continues to do the same thing over and over. As I understand it I would really benefit from the performance AHCI offers, particularly when running multiple programs at once.
I've tried using the ones from the Dell web site but I cannot get them to work, just incase i'm being a dill can someone link me to the correct AHCI drivers please?
got a inspiron 1545 recently with a SATA 320 gb HDD / 4gb ram with Windows Vista Home Basic. Like most of us I hate Vista. So I created a partition & installed XP.
Used a program "EasyBCD" to setup dual boot. I get the dual boot screen at startup. But only XP boots. After a little probing, came to know that there are only 2 options in the BIOS for SATA operations. AHCI & ATA. If I select ATA I can boot only to XP. If I select AHCI then I can boot only into Vista. Searched around but the solutions were a bit over my head. Really appreciate if anybody could come up with something in lay mans terms.
when I got my 9400/E1705 I was always sad for not having the AHCI option available in the BIOS.
This was asked for so many times:
- "Notebooks BIOS should support AHCI" [url]
- "Enable AHCI in Dell Notebook BIOS" [url]
- "Please give us BIOS support for SATA AHCI mode on Inspirons!" Please give us BIOS support for SATA AHCI mode on Inspirons!
- "Give us real bios control" [url]
- "Bios release" [url]
In the Sony forum, they have found a way to activate these options even if they're not present in the BIOS:
How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop ... The only item you'll need is a bootable DOS media. Click one of these links for instruction for creating a bootable floppy disk (with USB floppy drive) or usb stick.USB flash1 or USB flash2 or CDR (add modified table file to image before writing). Instructions:
1.Download symcmos and copy it to your bootable DOS media. This utility is used to modify your Phoenix BIOS settings. Also, download a DOS text editor and copy it to the media if you feel comfortable editing a file in DOS.
2.Go to the BIOS by pressing F2 during start-up, or when the VAIO logo appears, and reset the settings to factory default. Save and reboot.
3.Go back to the BIOS and enable the boot from external devices option. Save and reboot.
4.Press ESC when the VAIO logo appears to bring up the boot selection menu and select the bootable DOS media. At the prompt, type "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt", without quotes, and note that there's no space in between the flag and filename. This will create a literal symbol table from the NVRAM named Default.txt which contains all the current BIOS settings. Reboot by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. If that doesn't work, hold the power button until the notebook turns off.
5.Use the DOS text editor (or boot to another OS and use a text editor there) to edit the generated Default.txt file. Change the following lines and save the modified file to something else (e.g. modified.txt):
I have a VGA plug in my Dell Inspiron 1545 and when I plug in the cord it doesnt work. I have another laptop and I used the same cord and it works. So I guess my VGA doesnt work, what do I have to get to replace the VGA in my laptop?
I just got my new 1720 Inspiron, and I had a problem when trying to create an image of the C and D drive using the Ultimate Boot CD (BART), it would never see my hard disk partitions. I changed the BIOS setting for the On Board Devices from AHCI (default) to ATA for SATA operation. I also had to change the Flash Cache Module to be disabled, it was enabled in the Factory Default. The result of these changes was good, I was able to see my C and D drive when booting from my Ultimate Boot CD. What these changes do? Should I leave my BIOS at the new setting, or will I lose performance from my hard disk?
I'm trying to get more grunt and more importantly more go/ less battery hammering (not at the same time..) out of an old TM240. So I bought a 2.8 P4 HT (SL7DS) which in theory should work in this board as it has the 852 chipset. However, when I fit it all I get is the wireless light comes on, and nothing more. Oh, and the light doesn't then go off when I press the power button again..
Works fine if I drop the Celeron back in though.
I can try sticking the P4 in a desktop I've got kicking around to make sure it works, but assuming it does, why doesn't it in the laptop? BIOS is the latest available and the board/ BIOS should be the same as the 250 series, which certainly came with P4 processors
I read threads about people with SZs with their function keys not working, not working after closing the lids, etc... I assume this is with 64bit Windows 7 clean install? If I upgrade, not clean install, a freshly factory restored SZ780DN to 32bit Wiundows 7 Pro, will everything work 100%?
is i got a new Aspire E3-111 that has 2GB of ram, and i want to put one of my 4GB ram stick into my laptop but it doesnt work, the ram is the same type but it doesnt work. also the laptop freezes up when i play ME3 for more then 1 hour and i have to do a hard restart... i also made a video showing whats going on
I have tried to put it in but there is a 1/4 in pin in the way. Is there a way to remove with out any harm. My Inspiron 9400 video card is having problems.
I have tried the 400 deg for 10 min but it did not last
I have a 5738z and upgraded to windows 7. I had to do a clean install as I upgraded to x64 Win7 from x86 vista to use the 4gb of RAM the machine has. The upgrade went fine, no problems. All drivers installed fine and the machine runs great. My problem is that the ePower button will not work no matter what I try (it's the P button on other models) and it wont light up green. I've used the Acer upgrade disk, which installed the launch manager software, but the button still wont work.
My HP G60 came with Vista. It has been upgraded to Windows 8.1 but the audio function has become non-functional. Is there a need for a new driver to solve this issue? If not, I am thinking of restoring Vista from restore disks. Can the restore disks still work now that it has Windows 8.1 in it?
I started using my laptop with Windows 8 and everything was working fine. But then Windows upgraded to 8.1 and now I cannot get the Dolby Home Theater v4 to start, I always get the error message about driver.
I want to install mediadirect on my xps 1530. I want to follow this Dell Vista Laptop Reformat and Bloatware Removal Guide But I have a question before beginning.
This paragraph : AHCI Concerns: On new Dell systems, they are set up to run in AHCI mode which will give you a 15% system performance boost. In many instances, the AHCI driver MUST be installed during the initial installation process for the installation to work.
Those not installing it are finding that their system may BSOD or hang during the installation and saying "Completing Installation Process". One must find the driver specific to their system either on the drivers disk that came with their laptop or at www.Dell.com in the drivers section.
Download and expand it to a USB drive or disk; the USB is preferred but it is important that you expand it on the media you just saved it to. Once done, put it aside for now .....
I have a new XPS laptop and wish to sell on my old Inspiron laptop, however I've lost all my restore disks and OS disk for it that came with it. What I do have is my OS disk and driver disks that came with my new XPS laptop.
I know I'm not able to use the driver disks on my Inspiron because it's different hardware, but do we think the OS disk will install Vista on my Inspiron?
Both have their own Vista licences stuck to the bottom of the laptop and both are licenced for Vista Home Premium, so as far as I can make out this would be lawful.
So would the OS disk work? I can't see any reason why not and suspect that the OS disk doesn't include any specific drivers or anything. The only thing I noticed is that the installation doesn't prompt for a key, so I was concerned about that part.
I am going to do a clean install on my system using Vista 64bit.
I saw the reformat and bloatware removal forum and wanted to know to I need to install the AHCI driver during install and if so where can I find it for my system,
I read somewhere that I do not need to install the driver as the Vista install cd that came with my system has the driver on it .....
I reformatted my inspiron 1520 but didnt load ahci drivers (vista didn't find them). When I try and enable ahci in the bios, i get a bsod when vista is booting. How do I get ahci enabled?
I have a Inspiron 15 Intel (N5010) laptop with Win7 64bit. when I start my computer with headphones plugged in and then unplug them, no sound comes from the speakers. If I start the laptop with headphones unplugged then there is no problem (also, when I start with the unplugged, then plug the headphones in and then unplug, the sound from the speakers is ok).
I installed the latest audio drivers and codecs. But now that I think of it, I installed latest network drivers from dell site. I have a TOSHIBA MK6461GSYN hard drive and I wonder where could I check if there is a newer firmware available? Checked Toshiba site and they had some update program but that needed a floppy drive.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop and it's 2 yrs old now.
For about 6 months, it was saying that my battery was reaching the end of its usable life and I needed to replace it. However, it still worked fine, I just had to keep it plugged in.
One night though, I realised when I turned it on that the message changed from that, and instead it just said "You need to replace your battery". It didn't shut down in my face or anything the same time though, I coninued to use it and when I was done I just shut it down as usual.
The next day when I tried to turn on my laptop, it wouldn't come on. I assumed that this was because the battery died, but my dad told me that if I removed the battery and plugged in the adapter it should still be able to work fine. I did try this, but it still didn't come on.
What I would like to know is if the problem is just the dead battery, or if something else is wrong... someone told me that it could be a problem with the motherboard...
I know for sure that all laptops don't work without the battery, are dell laptops like that too?
I have an Inspirion 3137 with a clean install of Windows 8. My touch screen does not work at all. So far I have:
- installed all available driver updates from Dell
- installed all available Windows updates
- updated to windows 8.1
- installed all original software from Dell backup image
I tried following troubleshooting to calibrate the touchscreen and the calibration options are not available in the control panel.
I have found that the touchscreen is not listed in the device manager under human interface devices. I found an updated chipset that claims to fix this issue but it is apparently not compatible with this computer.
I bought a Dell Inspiron n5110 but it USB 3.0 is not working for me when i put the mouse or flash-drive in, do i suppose to install a driver to get this work? Any link for a driver? because i was trying to find but didn't work....
