Dell XPS 15 :: AC Adapter Type - Unknown Device Installed

Feb 27, 2013

I've got a XPS 15 (L511Z) which recently stopped charging the battery. It says plugged in but not charging when I hover the mouse over the battery icon. Luckily I've got an extended warranty and on contacting Dell they sent out a new charger. I plugged that in and the same result. In fact now when I boot the laptop it gives me an "The AC adapter plugged in cannot be determined" message.

Dell then asked me to buy a new battery since batteries are not covered in the warranty. Did that but still no luck. Am thinking that the original battery was ok to begin with anyway! Dell then asked me to update the BIOS but when I tried to with the update they gave me it failed, saying incompatible with the current hardware.

I then ran the DELL Support Center utility which identified another BIOS update which updated successfully but then I noticed that it changed the Product to L501X now. The charging issue still persists though.I've sent a response back to Dell but based on what I've been reading on the forums it looks like the motherboard would have to be replaced.

Dell Inspiron 6400 :: Unknown AC Adapter Installed

Mar 28, 2013

I have a problem with my Inspiron6400. The AC-adapter powers and runs the system correctly but does not charge the battery. In the BIOS set up I read "unknown AC adapter installed", which of course isn't the case: it is the original one that came with the laptop. I updated the BIOS to the latest version (A17) but this doesn't solve the problem.

Lenovo ThinkPad W Series :: Unknown Device In Device Manager After Win 8.1 Upgrade On W540

Aug 29, 2014

I'm using the W540 with an ultradock and external monitors. After upgrading my W540 to win8.1 64 bit, device manager is showing an unknown device. I'm not quite sure what it is, but almost everything seems to be working fine and Lenovo solution center isn't finding any driver updates.

I did notice that the solution center hardware scan did not test the video card memory and listed that test as N/A. Video and monitors seem to be working fine though and both nvidia and intel graphics show up in device manager.

Device manager lists the device in question as follows:
Device instance path: ROOTSYSTEM001
Hardware Ids: rootiwdbus

HP Pavilion Dv5-1183cl OS/Software :: Missing Base System Device Drivers / Unknown Device / Battery Not Charging

Sep 7, 2014

I have an HP Pavilion dv5-1183cl that has been upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit) and I have some issues.I have four errors showing up in my device manager, three Base System Device and one Unknown Device, and I don't know what they are or where to get the drivers (since I don't know what they are). Additionally, the battery will not charge (there does not appear to be anything wrong with it physically). I am wondering if the below errors are related to the battery issue. Below are the hardware IDs for each error entry.

Dell XPS M1330 :: AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined?

Dec 7, 2008

This problem actually popped up on me a few months ago, but I was able to remove and insert the power cord a few times and the message would go away and I would be able to charge my battery. But as a month or two passed, it became more finicky, and I had to jiggle with it a little more, but still, I was able to charge my battery and use my laptop wire-free.

Now today, I've been trying all day, and cannot for the life of me get the battery to charge. I get the following message when I plug the wire in.

"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."

Also, I think its worth nothing that a lot of people mention that this error message comes up while they are booting their Laptops, mine only comes up once Vista is loaded and I attempt to reinsert the cord.

So, I have tried another Dell charger, a 90W one, and the same problem does occur (My original is a 65W). I am planning on getting a different battery tomorrow to see if it is the battery, as this ones usable life was getting quite low, down to barely a half hour per full charge. My warranty, although I'm not sure of the specifics, was not expired when this problem first came up, but is now expired by I would say 2 months at the most.

Oh, I have a M1330, and I have gotten a lot of use out of this laptop

Dell Inspiron E1705 :: AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined

Jan 30, 2009

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message.

When this issue is occuring, the battery won't charge, it held at 91%.  I also got the warning in Windows one time.Is this just the power supply, or the laptop itself ?

Dell Inspiron N5010 :: AC Adapter Unknown Plugged In (not Charging)

Jan 19, 2014

So, I've had a dead battery on my Inspiron N5010 that would not hold a charge. I also noticed that when i plug in the Dell 65W AC adapter that came with my computer without the battery (as a temporary power source) and the light on the AC Adapter shut off. I've used other dell AC adapters and the same thing happens (AC adapter light cut off). Identifying these problems, I purchased a new battery and the battery worked perfectly fine but when i plug in the AC Adapter, the AC Adapter light would cut off and would not charge the battery. I figured it was a Mobo issue but discovered that the I/O ports for the AC Adapter are on the daughterboard. I purchased and replaced the daughterboard. I plugged in the AC Adapter and now the light on the Adapter stays on. The adapter can now be used with or without the battery but it will not charger the battery. Every time I turn on my Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop, I get the following message:

"The AC adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance."

- I replaced the I/O circuit board (daughter board)

- I Flashed the BIOS

- I Installed Dell QuickSet

- I am using the 65W Dell AC adapter that came with the laptop

- The AC adapter that came with my N5010 works on other Dell laptops

- I've used a different 65W Dell AC Adapter.

- The adapter is not charging the battery (Plugged in but not charging)

- The green light on the adapter stays on all the time when in use

Inside of the BIOS the AC Adapter Type is "Unknown". what else do you recommend I do?

Dell :: Unknown Device On 1537 After Clean Install

Dec 28, 2008

I just finished doing a clean install of Vista SP1 on my new Studio 1537. Everything has gone well, however when I checked Device Manager I have one device with an exclamation mark next to it. When I clicked on the unknown device properties it tells me that it is "Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919" I've looked all over Dell's Driver and Download site and I can't find the driver for this device nor do I know what category I should look under. When I contacted Dell's support they wanted me to unistall the device and overwrite my current BIOS version, A07, with an older version, A05. I decided that wasn't the best way so I thought I'd ask here hoping someone could help. After my install I loaded the drivers in the following order per Dell's directions: Notebook System Software, Chipset, Audio, Video, NIC Card, Dell Quickset, Wireless NIC, Touchpad. I didn't download and install the SATA drivers from Dell's website because my drive model isn't one of the ones listed for use with the driver. My drive is listed as a ST9320320AS. I'd appreciate any help someone can offer.

Dell Latitude E5540 :: Unknown Device Driver

Jan 8, 2015

I have been running in to an issue lately with a Latitude E5540 laptop.

The specs are:

Intel i5 cpu @ 1.9 ghz
4 gb RAM
x32 Windows 7

In my device manager it says that I have an unknown device and there is the warning symbol next to it. When I go to update the drivers it says that it can't find any drivers (I am connected to the Internet). I looked at the hardware ID and noticed that it was APCISMO8810, I then proceeded to research the driver, which I found was the ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver. I also know what it's primary function is.

The issue I keep running in to is that I have uninstalled the driver, and tried to re-install the driver from the Dell downloads. However halfway through the process the install wizard tells me that the most recently updated driver from dells site is older than the driver I currently have installed. (even though it says there is no driver installed)

Dell Inspiron 14Z N411Z :: USB Unknown In Device Manager

Jan 29, 2015

I installed a new hard drive on my Niece's laptop Inspiron 14Z (N441Z) and did a clean install of Win 7 Home Premium.  I installed the Chipset drivers first and then started on the list displayed in the support area for this machine.  After completing all of the drivers install, my device manager looked like this:

The Unknown Device shows an ID USBUnknown.  This machine has 1-USB2 and 2-USB3 ports.  If I run the Dell Diagnostics it shows that I have 1-1.1 USB ports, and 2-USB2 ports.  The 1.1 port appears to works since it will recognize flash drives etc.  This is also true of the of USB2 ports.  The other USB2 does not recognize anything except my Samsung Galaxy 4 phone.  But when it is unplugged I get a balloon on the task bar that says a USB device is not recognized. This will also occur when I first boot up the machine. It is like the machine is not recognizing the USB ports  If I run any of the hardware troubleshooters that Microsoft has it tells me that a driver is missing but when it tries and install, it reports that it fails. I have undated my bios, all drivers, I have uninstalled drivers and then rebooted with no luck.

Dell Inspiron N5110 :: Battery Not Charging - AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined

Nov 8, 2014

I have a Inspiron n5110 laptop and for about a month it had a problem. It works fine (battery charges as usual) until a power drop (even for a second) occurs. When power comes back battery does not start to charge. It gives a error message "AC power adapter type cannot be determined"...

I suspected the fault may be with the power charger/adapter and searched for new one in the store. But there I came to know compatible adapter for my 15R laptop is a 90W adapter. [URL] ....

And I got a 130W adapter when buying this laptop. So I thought they must have switched it by accident and it didn't bother me since it worked fine until now. But according to store, the adapter I'm using now does NOT supposed to be compatible with N5110

This is what I have now : [URL] ....

I have a working 90W dell adapter from my friend and i tried it to my laptop. It also gives the same error as above except my laptop identifies it as a 90w adapter and asks for a 130W adapter instead(When my adapter is plugged-in it doesn't even identify it as 130W as you can see from the image).

Dell Inspiron 1501 :: Disable (AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined) Message

Mar 18, 2013

So my power cord or battery is garfunkled and it doesn't hold a charge. I use my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501) with the cable plugged in all the time. I'm perfectly happy with this and there is absolutely no way I'm paying any more for any charging equipment (battery or otherwise) when I can get a faster laptop for cheaper than the cost of the charging equipment. So I'm not going to spend any more money and I'm perfectly happy with how the laptop works.

I don't need a solution but when the laptop boots it stops at this error message (in the BIOS or DOS or w/e before the OS loads) until it gets some user input okaying it to continue booting.

I want to disable the message to allow the computer to boot into the OS when it is turned on. I either want the message to time out or not to appear at all. I looked in the BIOS (which is the simplest BIOS I've ever seen and has practically no options outside of boot protocol) and didn't see any options related to error messages or to act in any way.

Dell Latitude D630 :: Battery Recharge - AC Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined

Feb 23, 2013

I recently purchased a refurbished Dell Latitude D630 and everything was great. After a few months the laptop would every so often get a message saying:

"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."

It was ok after I fiddled with it and it would charge normally. Now the battery refuses to charge with my adapter and runs only on AC power. I assumed I just needed a new battery but then something weird happened. I used my girlfriends charger to charge my battery and it worked 2 times, but strangely after the last time her computer started getting the exact same message and hers was fine beforehand. Is the battery somehow draining the adapters? I've never heard of that happening before. What should I do?

Dell XPS 15 :: Power Adapter Type Cannot Be Determined Error And Running Incredibly Slowly

Feb 11, 2013

I have encountered a problem with my laptop - a Dell XPS 15. When the computer turns on, or I insert the charger, the following error message appears:"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. This problem might be solved by: Ensure the plug is inserted completely for best system operation. Connect a Dell 130W AC Adapter or higher." I first encountered this problem a few months ago but on occasion, I have managed to get it working by taking the charger in and out a few times.

Though over the last couple of days, it won't charge at all. I have tried using another charger, which yielded the same results; though it was not the exact same charger and actually has a lesser power output. I also checked the bios during start-up, and next to AC Adapter Type was 'Unknown'. Though the charger can power on the laptop without the battery inserted. Just yesterday, my computer also started operating a lot slower, at an almost unusable speed and I think this might be related.
