Dell XPS L501x :: Not Accept The 130W Charger?
Jan 15, 2013
My XPS L501x does not accept the 130W charger from Dell.
The original charger (90W) was broken, so I bought a new 130W charger (Art-Nr. 450-12071).
With this 130W charger connected, the BIOS says "Unknow device installed".
When I use an old 60W charger (Inspiron 6000) then the BIOS says something about a "60W AC ..."
I have already installed the current BIOS version A08 !
So, what can I do to repair my system. The L501x will not not recharge the battery with any of the chargers.

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 which uses Dell's 90w Charger PA-10 which is a 90w 4.62A and 19.5V.
I have been looking for a second power supply, but before I drop the money on a new one. I also have an old Inspiron which uses a the 130w Dell Charger, it is a 6.7A power supply, and the same 19.5V as my Latitude Charger.
Could I use this charger with my Latitude without causing damage? I am just a little concerned about the Amperage being higher than my current charger.

I want to buy a spare 130W supply for my 1645 so I dont need to keep carrying it between office and home.
Are one of these correct?

I'm not sure of the difference between the two.

Well many people seem to suffer from the dreaded brick Failure, I have had a few go crap, and many of those failures usually were traced back to a broken wire in the DC cable assemly. If you wiggle the cable in the area if the strain relief you can usually hear the crackling sound.
I usually find it breaks in the strain relief - See attached Picture.
Fixing this can be easily done with a few items, there are a few little challanges as well.
1. Soldering Iron & Solder
2. Solder Sucker (removing tool) or Solder Wick
3. Wire Cutters
4. pliers, Small Screw drivers
5. Volt Meter (DVM)
6. Electrical tape
If you see Picture 1 of the plug, I just wanted to point out the typical barrel type connector used in the Dell laptops 6000/6400/9400/M1710 Etc.
There are 3 wires to connect here, The Out side Barrel is the Negative supply, The inside Barrel is Postive, and the inside Tip is a Voltage Sense.
I have added some new Pictures to show the inside of the PA-13 brick.
You can see the three connectoins on the bottom side of the board. The spacing is tight, and you can easily solder across two pads, checking for solder bridges is important
Please note, the spaces are small, and you require good eyes, a magnifying glass would help, and some soldering skills.
After your soldered the new connections careful inspection to check for any solder bridges is required.....

As I'm about to upgrade my Inspiron 9400 to a 7950 GTX GPU and quite probably 4 gb of ram soon, I've read that I will need a new Power Adapter since 90W won't be enough.
My question is: Is PA13 (130W) enough? Everywhere I look on this forum, they say you should get a PA13 (130W) or a PA15 (150W)...
Is there any reason to get the PA15 (150W), because if not, there would be no reason to pay more for extra power if you don't need it. In that case, why mention de PA15 (150W) at all?

New Studio 17, Vista64. I'm in the process of loading all my software. During the first few discs, I sometimes had problems getting the CD to eject.
Several times I had to reboot the computer to get the CD out (the eject button would work fine after reboot).
Now I can't get the computer to take in a CD. I can force it in almost all the way, but I don't want to go any further, or might not be able to get it out.
Is there a manual load and/or eject on these machines

It sounded like a mouse or something chewing/clawing away at something. I freaked out I searched the entire room and finally narrowed down the sound to my damn power adapter.
It was making a sort of clicking/ light scratching noise. It's still doing it, is this normal, this is the first time I've heard it.
Heres an MP3 I made of the noise.

It sounds like there are some dodgy sellers for the Dell power supplies, at least on ebay, based on some discussions. If anyone has purchased a 130W PS and feels like they could recommended the seller I'd appreciate the tip. If posting an ebay or retail link violates forum rules then just PM me.

After a short period of use my xps13 first edition ceases to accept keypad inputs. I just get a ping and nothing happens. Called premium tech support and not solved. Ticket still open and machine still useless. Pity as after having had so many dell products, what should have the "wow" factor has the "whoops" factor. I have resorted to an external keyboard, but that is hardly the elegant nor portable solution for which one had hoped.

The DVD RW Drive in my XPS will not accept blank CD-R discs...I have not tried other formats eg. DVD-R. I ran the Dell self-inspection test. All passed except those for this drive. The message reported was 'unsupported'. I reran the same test and obtained the same result.

Tried a G.Skill 4GB module in the M1330 this evening.
It is not recognized in slot A or B. This was tested with BIOS A08 and A12. This unit was purchased in March 2008.
It's a no go for this model it seems.

I've got an e1705, configured with an ATI x1400.
I bought the nVidia GeForce GO 7900GS to upgrade.
After installing, I get these blocks and pixels during boot (see photo below)
Vista begins to load but never makes it to the logo or login screens. I get a blue Memory Dump message for a split second and then the system reboots.
I reinstalled the x1400 after this happened. I ordered a replacement for the 7900GS but the replacement has the same problem.
This obviously isn't a driver problem since it happens during POST, before any drivers are even loaded.
why this would happen with two different 7900GS cards?
For the record, I'm a Dell Certified technician for the Inspiron series.

I want to upgrade the RAM of my laptop, but before I buy a second card, I wanted to make sure that the computer would be compatible with it. I opened it up to access the RAM, but when I tried to put the card that was already installed into the second slot, it wouldn't fit. It appears to be the right size, but it will not fit in the slot.

I have just bought the above laptop and gone through the setup. I've only input 2 passwords, both of which I've written down and it appeared to have set up okay. Unfortunately, the laptop lid got shut down and it won't accept either of the passwords I've written down.

I have downgraded this laptop to Windows 7 x64 (from Win8 x64), all was successful except the wifi drivers.
The driver installer supplied from HP just crashes and manually extracting and forcefully installing drivers results in a blue screen crash. I have also tried whom I beleive to be the chipset manufacturer, Ralink, for drivers but I get a "device could not start" error.
It should also be noted that I have a few other unknown devices which may be impeding progress but I could just be clutching at straws.

Many of us have brought Dell XPS 15s (L501X) an year ago - they are working great.
However all recent laptops now are coming with UEFI as default, with a legacy fallback option.
I believe current bios (A08) is actually a locked version of Phoenix Tiano Core UEFI.
Does dell have any update or is at least planning to launch one soon?
We need it for full functionality of Windows 8 and get it boot from gpt..., otherwise l501x is a powerful enough machine with i7 & a hot nvidia gpu.

Dell XPS L501X USB Ports not working properly. My USB 2 port work intermittently and my USB 3 port doesn't seem to work at all.
In November I installed Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on a new Crucial CRM4256SSD 256GB m4 Solid State Drive. Everything seems to be working except the USB Ports. I know my laptop is an unsupported Windows 8 system. What USB drivers I need to install to get them working correctly.

The last few days I've been trying to replace the 2x 2gb RAM in my XPS 15 (L501X) December 2010 laptop by 2x 4gb (Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9).
This should be possible based on the processor (Intel 460M) and the chipset, but somehow it isn't. Both with Windows 7 and Windows 8 my laptop just won't boot. Both give an error just after the Windows logo appears. Replaced it with the old 2x 2gb and it boots normally.
Loaded BIOS defaults, didn't work. Erased CMOS by removing the battery, didn't work either. BIOS is updated to latest W8 version.
Also with just 1x 4gb in one slot, the problem stays the same: laptop doesn't boot. (Also tried for the other one of course to make sure the problem is not that one of them is broken.)

I have a brand new Dell XPS with Model : L501X purchased in Malaysia hand carried to Philippines about 2 weeks ago.
Upon receiving I have noticed that a Blue Screen appears with nvlddmkm.sys error every time I play a video initially stored in the laptop hard drive or via youtube.
I have also noticed there were two video drivers installed which where Intel HD graphics and Geforce GT 420M drivers. I installed an updated GT 420M driver through driver downloads in dell support. Unfortunately it did not resolve the issue.
To relieve my doubts of driver conflicts, I have freshly installed a Windows 7 home premium but BSOD still keeps on occurring.
I am currently running this computer using only one video driver (Intel HD Graphics), I want to run this computer using Nvidia Geforce GT 420M.
How am I gonna do that without having BSOD recurring?
Is it also normal to hear some frequently very mild ticking sound coming from the right side of the keyboard and mildly grounding sting on the plastic aluminum colored frame around the keyboard?
BTW, here are some hardware info :
Model : L501X
Processor : Core i5
Ram : 4 Gb
Hdd : 500 Gb
VCard : Nvidia Geforce GT 420M - 1 Gb

I've just changed the hard drive from original to an SSD (cloned image) and changed nothing else.I've put it back together but when I press the Power button, nothing happens at all.
The battery shows fully charged, but there seems to be no power going to the system itself. When I plug in the power adapter, the light comes on for 1s then shuts off (I suspect that's just because the battery is charged) Is there a power reset somewhere if the battery has been out for a few days?

I'm having the seemingly all-too-common issue charging my laptop. I'm trying to update the BIOS bus as the battery is below 10%, it throws an error.
Upgrading from DOS doesn't work either as the updater cannot be run in DOS mode. I've tried all the usual stuff (reseating, etc)
The laptop is the XPS 15 (L501X).
