Apr 21, 2009the new dell studio 15 has a option fora 900p screen. this prob means a 1440x 900 screen but it just doesn't make any sense calling it 900p. it even confused me..

I want to buy a Studio 17; but rumors make me think that it will be refreshed soon.

Nov 24, 2008Please update to the revision immediately and post your results here. It seems importance is rated as Recommended and not urgent, so I'm not sure whether or not the system downclock and fan issues have been fixed, which is quite an urgent matter.
If someone could get a log file of the changes from Dell that would be great.

These things look sOoOoOoO important .
During the flash, the only thing that appeared was "Updating Keyboard Controller ROM", but I don't know if that's regular or not. I will be gaming with this new revision and posting results soon.
All in all, nothing to see here. Seems like Dell either a) does not read our threads, or b) does not care. Nothing to see here .
Dell :: Early XPS 1340 Which BIOS Revision To Use?
Jan 23, 2010I am currently running BIOS revision A5 on my 1340 which I bought in April 09.
I am re-installing Windows 7 64 bit following freezing problems and am considering updating to the current BIOS revision A11.
Under the 'Important Information' for the A11 BIOS at the the Dell download site, it says:
'2.This BIOS is for B02 chipset'.
SIW (System Information for Windows) on my 1340 reports:
North Bridge NVIDIA nForce 730i Revision B1
South Bridge NVIDIA nForce 730i Revision B1
I presume this is the chipset revision.

Oct 22, 2009I have a final revision pre-configured VGN-SZ780DN (Canadian model Made in Japan). It comes with Vista Business 32bit RTM (not even SP1). I was shocked this morning to check on the eSupport Canada website and find out that my model is not supported by Sony for a Windows 7 upgrade!?! I mean, I thought the earlier SZ models probably wouldn't but I figured that for sure the final line of SZs would be as they are pretty recent, as I only brought mine on clearence for a real good price this year in March for $1100 CDN.
So, if I get Windows 7, I just want to make sure that everything works 100% and I will do the simplest straightest upgrade possible. Windows Vista Business RTM 32bit upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 32bit.
I already have my computer flashed with the latest BIOS and Bluetooth firmware from the eSupport site. Now, if I reformat my computer to ensure that it is all clean with the Sony recovery, remove crap like Norton 360, Google toolbar, Spybot Search and Destroy, install ALL the latest driver and software updates from the eSupport site for Vista then upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 32bit, how will things be?

Sony :: Are My Z Specs Alright- Is 1080P Res Worth The Wait
Mar 23, 2010I am an owner of the old Z series(690) and have loved it ever since day 1. I think my only gripe was the gpu felt at times a bit weak for me, but that was to be expected. In general, it handled nearly all my tasks fine.
I am going to now be purchasing the new Z1190 CTO series. Right now, my specs are set to i7-620m, Win7 Professional, Silver, 4GB RAM, 192GB SSD. Is there any options you guys think I should change, such as an increase in RAM, or a decrease in something else, etc.
The only reason I have not purchased the laptop yet is because of 2 things, firstly is the 1600x900 resolution. I love the resolution, and while, sometimes, I find some things a bit small, overall everything is readable and fits well. When I heard they were having 1920x1080, that definitely got me excited. While I do not want to opt for the signature series Z, I am sure 1920x1080 will eventually come after a refresh.
Do you think it is worth waiting for the high resolution?
Is it worth it..or do you prefer the 1600x900?
Are there any major pros or cons to switching 1080p or is there not a large difference.
Lastly, the nvidia 330m, I do not know too much about. Most of the things I do on the computer, are not very graphic intensive, (light photoshopping, programming, etc) but will the Z with the specs I listed be able to run some games at decent settings with not everything turned down like the 9300?

Nov 10, 2014I purchased a U430 ideapad 3 days ago. Set up the laptop without problems. Ran Windows Update and updated 8.1 with 40+ updates. All was fine - Until I powered off and later restarted.
The Lenovo loading screen was followed by windows user login. Entered password for user and the normal desktop appeared. Immediately a green window appeared almost filling the screen, with 'Please wait' in the centre and 'Cancel' bottom right.
Cancel does nothing and the Please Wait screen never goes - effectively locking the machine. The screen can't be resized, or closed, and the Desktop is only visible at the very top and bottom, but cannot be selected.
Pressing Ctrl-Alt-del and selecting Task Manager doesn't identify what has loaded to cause the problem and trying to switch applications shows the desktop and task manager but won't allow these to be selected, as the green screen just overlays everything.
I read online posts and did a factory reset, disabled the face-recognition software and repeated the Windows Update. All seemed fine, but next day the Green - Please wait - screen returned.
The only way I've found to regain access is to run the battery down to <10%. Getting a low battery warning at start up appears to stop the Green - please wait - screen loading and allows normal access to the Windows desktop.The laptop then functions normally until it's powered off and restarted and the Please Wait screen returns.
Dell :: Studio 1569 ( Studio S15z-2249CPN) Best Buy Blue Label CNET Review
Mar 28, 2010What I found quite interesting in the cnet review is that their performance testing of the Dell 1569 was second place just behind the Toshiba E205-S1904 (the other Best Buy Blue Label). I do not understand why, the specs are basically the exact same specs, EXCEPT our Dell has a 500gb 7,200rpm hard drive while the Toshiba has a 500gb 5,400 rpm hard drive. I would think, if anything our performance would be slightly better than the Toshiba because of our 7,200rpm hard drive. All the other specs are the same.
So, with that being said, why did the Toshiba have slightly better performance numbers than ours, since as I keep stating all the specs are the same except we have a faster hard drive?

I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;
I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,
but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....

Feb 24, 2009Recently i ordered a Dell Studio XPS and like many of you with dell's,my main use was to be for audio production,dj'ing or any sort of thing pertaining to music.After ordering and then reading up online,ALOT of people are having problems getting the latency and/or pops skips & jumps out of their sound source.
Some say the problems lie within the Lan card,some say video card.And most importantly,Dell does not have an answer to the problem because they are not trained to understand audio type situations(Unfortunately).So...Here is where we are going to solve this thing(or try really hard because besides that...these are prett good laptops otherwise) Once i get mine in the next 3 days,im going to tell you what i did because i WILL fix it or at least try hard and fail.

Nov 6, 2009I'm university student and ntb is meant to be carried almost daily (16" is ok for me), it's mainly for multimedia oriented jobs, some programming in C and Mathematica, some photoshop or even premiere (occasionaly), A LOT of movie watching. I also want it to be futureproof and well-built.
Dell XPS 1645 meets most of my criteria, but there are few things I'm unsure about...
1) after reading a couple of reviews and many posts on this forum I'm really doubtful if RGB-LED is worth the extra money. I'm not doing colour sensitive job (however I do sometimes edit RAW images in PS), but i want things on the display to look natural, especially in FullHD movies... (and I'm occasional gamer too)
Those who had honor to work with RGB-LED: would you pay for it in my position???
And just to make sure I haven't overlooked something: biggest DISadvantages of RGB-LED are supposed to be: inaccurate colors, bigger power consumption and some heat produced;
while advantages should be: 0,4" gain in size, wider gamut and (maybe) better brightness...
Do you know any more to be added?
2) I'm also considering usual Studio 17 with Core i7 720QM (almost the same config), because it should be cooler, it has numpad and place for additional hdd (I'd buy 80GB intel ssd 34nm for system while keeping stock 500GB for data, I think it's beatiful idea), but what I DISlike about studio 17 is: dimensions, weight, speakers and design (and maybe a bit worse overal built quality).
So which one do you think is better for me?
3) how does combined e-sata/usb work? Since I have a external e-sata drive I have to plug 2 cables at the moment: USB for power and e-sata... With this 2-in-1 port do I need only 1 special cable? Or is it meant to be either/or thing??? From the placement of combined e-sata/usb on the opposite side of ntb than other USBs I'd say that 1 cable should be enough,

Feb 23, 2010I am looking to get a Studio XPS 16 soon, but can't quite decide on which model to get and had a few questions...
1) What is the battery life of the 1647 (i5) compared to the 1645 (i7) assuming they have the same specs. I've read that i5's should last longer, but I really couldn't find anything comparing the two for these systems.
2) When configuring the 1645 and 1647 side-by-side with the same specs. The 1647 is about the same price as the 1645, if not more (depending on which processor selected). I thought the i5's were supposed to be less expensive than the i7's. Since they are about the same price, would it be better to go with the i7? Any reason to choose the i5 over i7?

I bought an Dell XPS 2 years ago and returned it because I did not like the keyboard and VISTA. The keyboard keys were weird to me. They had no grip, felt too plasticy, hard to explain.

The studio 14z seems to be a little smaller and lighter than the xps 13.
14z also suppose to have a 6 hour battery life with 8 cell. better than xps 13
The xps 13 has a 9500m vs the 9400, but i heard thats only for conserving battery, or does it outperform the 9400
