GPU 54C To 58C
Is that okay?
The bottom of the computer is hot to the touch and the fans are blowing out hot air. I cleaned all fans and heat sink vents. also re applied all thermal paste on the cpu and gpu. Im concerned because my motherboard and gpu were just replaced yesterday for heat issues i believe. havent figured out if the heat was the cause or not. the temps were the same as there now with the new motherboard and gpu .....
Dell :: XPS 1640 Load System Fan Even When Idle
Jul 9, 2009I just got the xps 1640 today and I'm very distracted by the loud system fan. It's audible all the time even when the computer is idle. I haven't been doing anything intensive on my computer either. The fan starts as soon as windows loads and never stops. I know this laptop has heat issues but I checked the core temp and it is only between 38-45degrees C. I know the fan can get louder under load, this is what I would describe as idle but still, it seems way too loud. It was raining earlier and I could hear the fan over the sound of raindrops hitting my roof. It's getting unbearable!!
Has anyone had the same experience? Or more importantly does anyone have a way to reduce the speed of the fan slighty? Speedfan doesn't seem to support my motherboard so I can't do it there.

4gb ram

Mar 5, 2009i purchased one compaq cq45-137tx in december. I guess it' similar to the dv4t models marketed in other countries.
model details
there are couple of temperature issues with this lappy ( ambient temp 25-30C):
1. at idle ( just media player or maybe a pdf file open), the cpu temp is at 43C, northbridge always above 50, gpu always above 55.hd also tends to operate at 45-48C. this is inspite of the fact that i am running this thing with no vents blocked ..and in fact the RAM, cmos battery and hd covers removed to allow better air circulation.
2. at normal load ( game like burnout paradise, with utor going on in background), cpu tends to reach 60 C, gpu at 80 C , northbridge at 70C and hd at 60 C.
3. cpu temp never seem to change really. tried using various s/w' like realtemp ( shows 28 C for gpu..which i dont think is feasible). only when i reboot after a high load session, the s/w' show higher temperatures ( and the notebook shows erratic behavior with display artifacts!).
4. the only fan in the machine never appears to speed up or down. i don't have an issue with the noise, as long as it helps this thing run cooler.......

Mar 25, 2009I replaced the thermal paste of the CPU and the GPU with "Coollaboratory liquid pro". And I replaced the thermal pad of the northbridge with "Arctic Silver 5" thermal paste.
Here are my sesults (in a 20 degrees Clesius enviroment, T9600, 2,8GHz, stock voltage):
73 dregrees Celsius at 100% load
(instead of 92)
39 dregrees Celsius at 0% load (fan off)
(instead of 45)
According to my research and different experiments this combination is my actual optimum.
The cooler and more silent system supports my usage of voice recognition (using the internal mic).
Of cause later the voltage could be reduced using rmclock.....

Aug 11, 2009My Idle temp seems to be within the range of:
27C-43C for CPU
44C-51C for GPU
These are temps when I'm not even doing anything. The fan activates when the GPU hits 51C and stops when the GPU temp reaches 44C. The CPU doesn't seem to be a factor in activating the fan.
Use I8Kfangui to see your CPU and GPU temps. Just don't click on AUtomatic Fan Control because that will severely lag your system until you turn it off. http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html

Apr 23, 2009I have a T5750 Processor and after playing L4D HWMonitor reports my max CPU temp as 81C. My idle temperatures are around 41-45 but my max temps are worrying me. My GPU temp also goes up to ~83 when gaming as well.

Wondering if these temps are acceptable in a laptop or not?
Temps idling 3-10% cpu = 57-67C
Fan feels the need to go into hairdryer mode every 5 minutes or so to bring the temp down a few C.
under load core 1 + 2 = 100%
core 1 = 88-90C
core2 = 90-92C
Also i will add this is currently in a very cold room.
would you say these are acceptable temps or not?
also not overly impressed with the build quality. keyboard bezel popping out in certain sections after 4 months.

Mar 31, 2010I been using my 1645 lately and noticed that it always running hot, the fans are always running accelerated, my average temps for the cpu are high 50's to 60's and this is normal utilization and not using hard core apps, i was wondering what are your average temps you guys get...

Feb 4, 2013I have a Studio 1745 which refuses to boot up.The Laptop initialises and begins the BIOS Post processes and gets to about 66% through the BIOS load status bar and freezes. I am unable to get into BIOS setup or Diagnostics either. I have checked all connections and removed and refit the CMOS battery - no change to the problem.

Feb 8, 2013I'm trying to load a new hard drive for my Dell Studio 1557 LT due to the original failed. I've worked on many PCs and LTs before and loaded software so I know the basics and then some. Problem is, when the LT boots from the OS from an external dvd drive -Win 7 64 when it attempts a write to the hard drive at the same point in the installation every time it blue screens then reboots. I cannot capture the blue screen info due to the immediate reboot. I have tried many utilities and other hard drives but the LT wont let me write to the hd to load an OS. I tried loading a hd from another pc then install it into this LT, same results blue screen then reboot. Very strange as if the LT wont allow a new hard drive or OS to be loaded. I've been trying to get this loaded for a week now and have tried everything. The hd was even DoD low level formatted too. Is there s Dell disk I need to get it started ?

Mar 5, 2009On my Dell Studio 1735 laptop I have been running with Vista Ultimate x32 since I got it - yes - the <gasp> factory load! Everything worked flawlessly under that factory load. I decided yesterday to install Vista Ultimate x64 after having downloaded all drivers from Dell's website that I needed (made sure to download the x64 specific drivers). After installing, all drivers went in normally, but, the fingerprint reader (even though it's recognized in the control panel and services for it are running) doesn't give me the option of using it to logon to Windows or into any websites or anything else. I tried removing and reinstalling the drivers - no change. There is no GUI to enable/disable it that I can find. I've gone through the Program Files folder that it's installed into but nothing showing as an executable.

i see that windows 7 runs noticeably cooler than windows vista. Please post your details so that other users can have an idea about what to choose if they decide to bootcamp windows.
Dell :: Xps 1340 Temp Goes Up When Idle
Mar 20, 2010I have a Dell XPS 1340, P8700, 9500M GS.
I noticed that when idle the temperature slowly goes up to 65C, then the fan kicks in, lowers it to 45 and stops. The temperature goes up again and in about 2 minutes it is already 65 again.
The process repeats indefinitely.

Feb 1, 2009i was reading a few other posts about idle temps of the GPU in the XPS 1530 and my temps are way above what everyone else is getting.
I have an idle GPU temp of approx 80-88 degrees celsius. I mean i could maybe expect that under a heavy load, but an idle temp??? The fan seems to be on all the time.

Mar 21, 2013While in use, the XPS 12 is usually fairly cool and quiet through normal operation. It spins up if in heavy use of course. This is whether on AC or battery power.
However, if the machine sits there and goes to idle, the fan spins up like crazy and the bottom warms up to. This is for hours and hours at a time - often if I leave the machine at night and come back in the morning this is the case.
I thought it might be some process that starts running when the machine is idle and away, but if I leave Task Manager open there isn't any disk or CPU activity that would indicate that happening.

May 15, 2014I just got a refurbished E7440. Before booting into an OS (e.g. staying in BIOS or at the boot menu), and after booting into Ubuntu, the fan is always on high and never stop (even when the CPU is idle at 40 degree C)). I also have an E6420 and an E6440, have never seen this behavior on them.
I see both BIOS A06 and A07 has "thermal control" listed as enhancement. Updated the BIOS to A06, A07, then A08, still have the same problem in all of them.
Is this expected for all E7440s or just mine? What can I do to make the fan be "on-demand" (without using Windows)?

Fan speed control is not going idle on 7720 SE, even when temps are very low (below 40c)... on A12 BIOS, I have to restart my laptop to be able to switch to FAN Idle speed again. These are temps iam having and fans are still on.

Mar 11, 2009If I leave my M4400 idle with Windows (Vista Ultimate 32-bit) locked and the screensaver on for any length of time (e.g. 20 minutes), then the network card goes into power-saving mode even while on AC power, reducing the connection speed from 1Gbps to 100Mbps. I can see this because the colour of the LED on the port changes. The reduction in speed causes a brief disconnection from the network. When I unlock Windows, there is another brief disconnection as it reverts to 1Gbps, and this causes instant messaging applications to log out.
If I go to the Link Speed tab on the network card's properties in Device Manager and force it to 1Gbps instead of Auto Negotiation, it warns me that power-saving features will be disabled, but then I don't experience the problem and it never disconnects. "Reduce link speed during battery operation" is unticked, but this should not apply to AC power anyway. I've tried upgrading the driver to 9.50.14.2, A01 (released on 24/02/2009) but the problem still happens.
Does anyone else experience this?

Dell Inspiron 1545 :: Battery Is Marked As IDLE In BIOS
Dec 5, 2012A few days ago, on my Inspiron 1545, my power adapter stopped working.
I started using an identical Dell adapter (exact same model PA-3E) to supply power to the laptop, power was working fine, but the battery would not charge. The battery is at 0%.
In BIOS the adapter is recognised as the correct 90W adapter but the battery is marked as "IDLE".
I have run Dell diagnostics and that says the battery is healthy, how can that be if it wont charge.
