HP/Compaq :: Vista Readyboost With A SD Card

Apr 25, 2009

Has anyone out there managed to get "readyboost" to work on an HP laptop running Vista business x64 with an SD card?

I have been running 4GB USB SanDisk for my 8510w running vista64 since a couple months ago, and it does improve the performance a lot. However, it is not so easy on the go for a laptop, so I did try to replace such readyboost with all my SD Cards (SanDisk II, Kingston, etc) and it reports that all cards are too slow - even I tried to format them with FAT32 but remain same, as well as to update the Reader's driver to most updated one.

HP/Compaq :: Speed Up PC With ReadyBoost

Apr 25, 2010

I just found out about ReadyBoost. I have a 2 gig that it can use.. Has anyone tried this.. does it do more than just prefetch?

Again, I am reading a LOT of great things about using the exFat file system on your Flash drives with ReadyBoost.. anyone tried this?

You see, my thinking is I have a CQ61 with 2 gigs of ram and on board video with 128 ram shared up to 1 gig. Windows needs a gig and the games need a gig. At some point memory should get sluggish and effect either windows performance, the running game, or both.

I am trying to minimize the processes and services windows runs, and leave more available Ram for the games to make them run as best possible. The ReadyBoost thing is just one trick I am trying to do this as well as disabling tons of unwanted processes and services using tools like Autoruns by Sysinternals, Smart Utility by TheWindowsClub and IoBit's GameBooster.

(I do plan on getting more ram when I can afford it but this is just a temp measure)

Also your thoughts.. isn't a USB Flash drive faster than your hard drive? if so, why not use one for your page file? If that works.. wouldn't that be better to help out those times when you run low on ram?

Also, what do you think of using a ram drive with a USB drive to simulate extra ram in general? (Like with Ramdisk)

Sony :: SanDisk Extreme III MS Pro-HG Duo (for Readyboost)

Jan 4, 2010

I've always been interested in Readyboost... It seems really clever to use flash memory for what it's good at, random data access. But usually flash drives and SD cards are very slow, like 3MB/sec.

Well I discovered that Sandisk makes a Memory Stick rated for 30MB/sec. I always thought Sony was foolish for creating another proprietary standard (a la Betamax), but in this case it seems to be the best for raw speed, and good for me since I can dedicate my VAIO CW's MS slot to Readyboost. I figured for $29 I might as well buy one and do some experimentation

So far I've done an HD Tune benchmark, but I can't test write speed because Windows doesn't allow you to delete a partition on a MS (HD Tune requires NO partition to exist). If anyone knows how to do this, let me know. Right now it's formatted as FAT32, but I don't know how that influences HD Tune.....

HP/Compaq :: Do I Really Want To Reinstall Vista On My HP

My wife has an HP DV6000 with Vista on it from the factory. We have talked about reinstalling Vista to get rid of all the other "junk" to put it nicely. I mentioned this to my brother-in-law and he said we don't want to reinstall Vista because HP puts so much on there to help users. If we reinstall Vista are we going to loose out on something HP gave us?

HP/Compaq :: Dv5 Question For Vista 64 Bit

Jan 3, 2009

How do you like the 64 bit OS? Will 32 bit programs still work with this and install under x86 folder? Any issues? The reason I ask the dv5-1183cl I bought when I get back to the US in a few weeks will have a P9500 2.53GHz processor and Intel Extreme SSD drive installed and I thought about going back to 64bit I just don't have a lot of experience with this OS yet, I don't like Vista to start with but it does have some better features than XP did, XP still performs better however with all the new components being released you need Vista to support some of the items.

if anyone has any insight on whether or not switching from XP Pro 32Bit to Vista Business 32Bit on the laptop I have below would be worthwhile.

HP/Compaq :: Vista 64-bit- Slowing Down

Feb 28, 2010

My brother has gotten a new laptop a few months ago: HP Pavilion DV7-1245DX. Since that time it has been slowing down every day.

At this time, it takes it ~4 min. to open the internet explorer 8, and previewing photos on it is just a pain in the neck. I can't figure out what is going on. The laptop has come originally with the Windows Vista 64-bit operating system. I have reinstalled all the drivers, specifically for the 64-bit version, reflashed the BIOS, defragmented the registry, defragmented the hard drive, checked for viruses, malware, trojans etc.

HP/Compaq :: HDX 18T Vista X64 Laggy

Jun 10, 2009

I recently purchased an HP HDX 18T Laptop with the QX9300 CPU, 4 gigs of RAM 1TB HDD's and the 1 GB 9600m GT video card. I have noticed that when maximizing and minimizing windows they tend to be a bit slow at times. Also, scrolling through websites can be very slow as well. Very laggy. I am running Vista x64 Ultimate, and I have the LaptopVideo2Go drivers, version 179.67. I have gone through hours upon hours of different video drivers, both stock and modded to see if that is where the problem lies. Many of the video drivers provide weird articats, and cause blue screens to occur. I have found very few stable, and relatilively functioning drivers. Gaming doesnt seem to be too bad, aside from the card not performing as well as I would like, especially in Fall out 3. I have the resolution set at 1920x1080, AA off, and the rest of the settings at high. I was hoping for a bit better, but this isnt a 130m card.

HP/Compaq :: Installing Vista After Dead HD

Aug 7, 2009

I have an HP dv5t which I purchased new last October. A couple of weeks ago, my HD got fried (think it overheated). HP sent me a new HD, and I had a technician install it for me. I never made recovery disks as instructed by HP (was gonna get around to it; who knew the HD would die in 9 mos?). The tech ended up installing Vista Ultimate Lite instead, which I thought was okay b/c there's no bloatware that way. However, I miss a lot of the elements of the Aero environment, particularly Windows DVD Maker.

I have two questions:

1. Can I get backup CDs from HP to reinstall Vista Home Premium (which is what my lappie was shipped with)? Would doing so reinstall the bloatware?

2. Is there a way to tweak Vista Ultimate Lite so I can have the standard GUI w/o putting bloatware back in my system? The environment in Ultimate Lite reminds me too much of XP (clunky-looking windows, fonts are too large, etc).

HP/Compaq :: Transfering Vista OS From OneLaptop To Another

Mar 16, 2009

I just had a chat session with HP Tech Spt to determine how to transfer my Vista 64 OS from one laptop, which was stolen, to another HP laptop that came with Windows XP on it. TS said it was IMPOSSIBLE. The chat session is posted at the bottom of this msg.

When I first bought the laptop that was stolen, I copied the Vista product key from the bottom of it. Since I am installing the same OS, I am hoping it will work using an MS phone activation.

Can anyone here validate or refute what HP Tech Spt said? It doesn't seem legal or correct since I purchased the OS and hold a product key for it.......

As an aside, I've completely given up on trying to install SP2 - it has never shown up in WU. After many struggles with the Readiness app, installing and uninstalling various updates that may or may not be in conflict with SP2, seeking advice from HP tech support and forums then finally restoring the system to factory state and directly downloading SP2 and attempting an installation that way,

HP/Compaq :: Windows 7 A Lot Slower Than Vista

Jan 21, 2010

I did a clean install of windows 7 earlier today and it's very slow even after updating and installing drivers. After using vista for quite a while, I'm not very impressed.

Vista was consistently very fast in everything I did but now windows 7 makes things slower with prettier interfaces.

Another thing to note is that when I installed the os, I made a second partition on my harddrive and when I did, windows created another "possibly necessary" necessary partition for system files. Now I have 3 partitions where the last one is using 100 mb of unallocated space and I cannot do anything to it.

I have a DV6-1253CA with duo core 2.0 GHz processor, 4 gb of ram, ati radeon video cared with 512 mb of discrete memory, and I'm using the 64 bit version of windows 7.
