View 8 RepliesI'm thinking of purchasing an FW series laption. I called Sony technical support to ask if Win 7 can run XP compatibility mode, which as I understand it requires hardware virtualization to be enabled. The support technician said: "Recently we attended a brief training session about this. We were told that XP virtualization would run on Win 7, but you have to download a virtualization program from Microsoft." Does that statement make sense? Regarding this program you download, is this idea consistent with running XP compatibility mode as you guys understand that?

I use Virtual PC heavily for work and need this feature.
I am thinking of buying a Sony Vaio FW since Windows 7 is now pre-installed. However, I had heard that virtualization was disabled by Sony.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt seems that sony is telling people no one has complained about VT, and they have not received any calls.
If you feel that you have been given false info call and file a complaint because the canadian pages which i have printed and taken photos of dont' show any sign like the signapore pages which states vt is not supported.
-----
my new job requires we use VMWARE and on my sony well things didn't go well.
So i know that sony had it disabled in the bios..... So i Initiated a complaint via my mastercard stating how sony on their candian site when looking at the specs doesn't list that it is disabled and that u actually have to search the site etc...........
My Sony Vaio is VGN-FZ31E , i've already read the thread from bogart (How to Enable Intel VT and AHCI on a Napa/Santa Rosa platform Phoenix BIOS Vaio laptop) about activating virtualization and i ve set the register to 001 but SECURABLE always shows that ivt is not supported !
bios version : R2110J7

Virtualization still not enabled
As you are very well aware... attempts at enabling hardware VT by 'hacking' the Insyde H2O EFI bios have not gone very far. While these has been success (kudos to Igor Levicki for pursuing it) with the other series of VAIO, the Z series has not been hackable till date and thus one of the most important and supported/advertised feature of the included Intel processors (P8400, P8600, P8700, P9500 and P9600 -> All Supporting VT as indicated by their official Intel pages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
Microsoft has just release Windows 7 RC (the best version of Windows, as claimed by some of the most popular blogs in the world) and one major feature in its toolset is the Windows XP Mode [url] and it is clearly indicated by Microsoft in their download page (Windows Virtual PC: Download) that for this important software compatability feature to work, hardware VT must be enabled and supported by the computer.
Since hardware VT is a feature of the Intel processors, us VAIO owners do not see Sony's logic in disabling it entirely without giving the owners of the machine any choice to enable it at a later time. Even if it is a unsupported feature as far as Sony goes, why cripple it? Why not have an option in the bios which would allow users to enable it by themshelves?
We hope that Sony listens to us and releases a bios update which either:Enables VT by default.Gives a option in the BIOS to enable it.This affects almost the entire lineup of laptops (not sure about desktops) in the VAIO series. Sony stands to loose nothing but rather gain another feature in its cap for being pro consumer and listening to the needs.
It's me and my crazy mods again After fitting second SSD to my Vaio Z (instead of optical drive), i got hold of Intel's X9100 ES from E-Bay...
Stepping is QBDW - for those interested.
So, after a hour or so of fitting everything in (mostly spent on opening the Z) it was ready for testing.
First results? Not very nice - X9100 ES I got has lowest VID of 1.0V (, I should have asked the seller for this before) Also, 3.0 GHz VID is outrageously high (1.225V) - so, during the first tests it was shown that almost immediately the CPU resorts to throttling (temp. gets to 105C) - completely useless .....
I have bought a Vaio VGN-Z21XN/B laptop. I have installed Windows Server 2008 64-bit on it, but I would like to inform me how to enable Virtualization.
Has anyone tried enabling Virtualization on Z series?

I ran Intels Processor Identification Tool, and it shows VT as enabled. I haven't installed VMWare yet, but I will shortly. Also, I haven't updated my Bios, but the VGN-Z690 bios update might be a possible solution for other(just a wild guess, I have no way of varifying).

how I can get hardware virtualization enabled on my HP dv5 1160
specs :
intel core 2 duo p7350
3gig of ram
nvidia 9600m GT
I've looked in the bios (version f.16) but i couldn't find anything.
apparently, dv2 with Athlon Neo does support hardware virtualization.
On AMD site we find:
Processor:
AMD Athlon™ Neo Processor for Ultrathin Notebooks
Model Number:
MV-40
Frequency (MHz):
1600
L2 Cache Size (KB):
512
Socket:
ASB1
Manufacturing Tech (CMOS):
65nm SOI
Wattage (W):
15 W
Virtualization
Yes
However, dv2 with the latest bios (F.27A) has the virtualization disabled and of course HP doesn't give you any options to change that. Too bad, since that means that you cannot run a 64bit virtual machine or even WinXP mode in Windows 7 on this laptop.
For those who've configured their laptops with the Core 2 Duo P7550, does this CPU have support for virtualization?
Information on this particular model is extremely scarce at the moment. Intel doesn't even have it listed on their site. I ask because Windows 7's Virtual PC and XP Mode require hardware virtualization support and I personally don't think it's worth the extra money to upgrade to a P8XXX series CPU just for it.
So P7350 and P7450 do not support virtualization but the P7370 does, so I'm guessing that the P7550 doesn't either and only the P7X70 models (which are only offered in HP's business laptops) have virtualization support.
Had some build quality issues with my original M1330 that I finally decided to take care of last month (plastic is warped/not glued down in places).
Now when I log into the Dell Support page with said dispatch # all I see is as follows
I have read the helpful Wiki page about the different stages in the "In Production" section and have called the 800 number to find out what stage I am in since I'm in the US. But every rep I talk to just tells me the same thing. It's in production and my EDD is July 8th.
I explained how I had read that there are 5 sub categories in the "In Production" section and I asked nicely if she could tell me what stage I was in. She didn't really understand what I was asking her not because of a language barrier, because while her english was accented we understood each other perfectly throughout the conversation.
She finally did say I was not yet in the boxing stage but could tell me no more than tha
Has anyone else had any issues with a delayed XPS M1530 Red Shipment? When I ordered it on the website, it said ESD was 1/16. Now it's been moved back to 1/26.
I've called a zillion times and I'm stuck in build status limbo. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar issue or any positive news for me. I'm so impatient, I probably should have ordered a stock machine instead of upgrading the processor and stuff. Oh well...
Edited to add: I received my accessories last week. Nothing like sitting around the house looking at a very sexy laptop sleeve and mouse. I would like to be able to use them though...
I am planning on buying the new Studion 1557 with the i7 CPU.
I would like to verify that with a Windows 7 Pro x64 as host, I can use VMware's VMware Workstation and Sun's VirtualBox for virtualization of both x64 and x86 guest operating systems.
If any one on this forum tried this, or know the answer, I would appreciate it very much
I'm looking at picking up an AS1810T to replace my Samsung NC10 netbook and my HP DV8230US laptop.
I was looking at an MSI earlier due to its better warranty (3 years) and better price ($450 as opposed to $600)...but unfortunately, the lack of VT on the T6600 is a deal-breaker.
Does Acer have Virtualization enabled on the AS1810T? The SU7300 has it, but I want to make sure that there's nothing else that would prevent me from being able to use the laptop properly...as VMWare and XP Mode are requirements for what I'll be doing with it.
I've been in boot menu a couple times, I can't find any options for BIOS virtualization.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs I've previously posted, my M1730 developed a problem with it's pair of 8800M GTXs back in September. After weeks and weeks of no service call happening, Dell finally agreed to refund me the full price of the laptop. When the money was received, I turned around and handed it right back for a M17x that I received a good quote for. When I ordered in earlier this month, I was told that there was a delay on a component and the estimated delivery date given was the 13th of January. Since I'd had no gaming laptop since September, I didn't really mind. I was checked the Order Status tool every day, but there was no change in the EDD.
On Friday December 11th I receive an email from Dell/UPS stating that they planned to deliver my laptop on Friday December 18th between 09:00 and 18:00. I checked the Order Status tool and it showed my laptop status as changed to 'Shipped.' Excellent! The email contained a UPS tracking code which was recognised on their website. The status was 'Billing Information Received' which means that they know there's a package to go somewhere, but they don't have it yet. Or so I've since been told.
Can you guess where this is heading? Friday 18th comes and goes and I've not received a laptop. I stayed in all day, most hermit-like, so there's no way they missed me. No card. Finally called UPS and they say that they haven't received the laptop yet.
So I checked the Dell Order Status page again and it definitely states that it shipped on the 11th. So where did it go? I don't mind waiting. I do mind waiting indoors for something that's not coming. Dell have also changed their 'Contact Customer Care' policy and there are no longer any phone numbers listed for them. It's now email only with a 24 hour response time.
When you're expecting a package, how many times do you check it daily?
I'll admit - I do it 5 times/per day, everyday, until the package arrives >.
ok so heres the deal, all the sudden, I cant access anything that an administrator can (Im the only person who uses this computer)
I was trying to access my folder options but its not there under tools, and when I try to access it with the run command, I get a message that basically says access has been disabled,
how do I restore administrative rights so I can bring the option back? thanks!
I am officially in the testing stage! w00t Guess I might get it by the end of this week afterall!
Anyone else that ordered a 1530, please post here when you ordered and EDD...
I ordered a custom Studio 15 from Dell last Friday. It reached the "Shipped" status by Monday. The order status on the Walsh Western site. It looks kinda something like this:
Date. Time. Location Activity
23/11/09. 13:30. China. DEPARTED MANU. FACILITY
23/11/09. 05:30. PENDING
Just wondering, how long does it take for the next stage / status update. I'm so impatient and want to know how long it takes on average for delivery. I'm in the UK.
Also, I've heard some negative things about Walsh Western and the quality of their service...
Is it my imagination or did the order status line change sometime in the past 12 hours?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have purchased the laptop 3 months ago and suddenly from yesterday I am getting no battery detected notification on the battery status icon. I am using Inspiron 15 3000 Series i5 Laptop. Â After sometime the battery status comes back. So its like going and coming back type problem.
