Apr 14, 2010While I was almost a 100% certain my next laptop would be the asus ul30jc, I just saw the folowing laptop in a local advertisement and I must say i'm tempted (being a student, I use almost all of my free money on vacation, food and alcohol so every saved € counts):
Compaq Mini 311c
Intel Atam N270 (1.6ghz)
1 GB RAM
160 GB HDD
Nvidia ION LE (shared memory)
Wifi b/g
Windows XP home (service pack3)
Battery info unknown, though most sites say it has a 6 cell battery.

So I have a few questions. First and most importent of all, I need to know how long the battery will last, if its +7 hours i'm content.
Second, I have no idea what kind of wifi I need, I use that white Belgacom Digital TV Router so perhaps my fellow Belgians can help me on this? When I use system information it says my wifi in my current laptop is A/G/N.
Third, will I be able to install the newest microsoft office programs (I have 2003, 2007 and will most likely buy 2010 aswell) on windows xp home?
Last but not least, will I see a big difference if I upgrade from 1gb of 2gb of ram? I noticed a big difference on my current laptop when I upgraded my ram, but since that hp compac has a very weak processor, it might be pointless since that cpu might bottleneck the effect?

My problem is that when I got to open a document that I've downloaded, I get the box asking me to buy, or try or enter my code for MS 2013. Aug 13, 2013I currently am doing IT work for a remote co-worker and he said that his T430 only came with Lenovo Recovery discs and that he doesn't have any standalone Microsoft Office discs. Is there a download for the Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 version that he's using that I can download to his machine, so I don't have to use the recovery discs for a factory reset?

I tried going to Microsoft's site to get the 2010 version, but when I entered his key, it said that there's no download available for the OEM version of Office 2010.

Mar 4, 2014I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook SNID 20206697434 with Windows 7. I bought the recovery disks because eRecovery stalls at Office 2010 but the disks do exactly the same thing - I can only open in Safe Mode. I've tried many times with the same result. Even though I bought the disks, Acer Customer Service won't let me talk to a tech because my net book is not unwarranty - mfg date is 1/14/2012.

Jan 31, 2015I'm on Windows 7Â 64 bit and the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery device is causing my Aspire E5-551 to freeze. If I enable the device and I try to run my laptop on battery it freezes, but when it's disabled I can run on battery perfectly fine.
Now I don't mind having it disabled since it fixes the problem but when I disable it then I have no way of telling how much is left of my battery.
This is a brand new laptop, a little over a month old so I haven't done any damage to it. I sent it in to get fixed but when I received it back from the Acer repair center all they did was re-install windows which did actually fix the problem for about a week but the problem came back.

Feb 20, 2010I use Office:Mac 2008, and I'm not a fan. But it's better than OpenOffice/NeoOffice (imo), and while I like a lot about iWork, the occasional small incompatibility -- and the fact that saving as .docx as default is troublesome -- is irritating.
For those of you who have been Mac users since Office '08 was released, I'm just curious as to whether there's a reason to expect that we might see a public beta put out by Microsoft in the coming few months -- long before this Fall/Winter 2010 release or whenever it's supposed to be -- so we can get cracking on that.

This is an Aspire 4530 running Vista.
The trial version expired and I wanted to uninstall it and install my own copy of Office 2003. But if course it would not uninstall - probably because I wasn't the real "Administrator" at the time. I followed the MS guide for forceably uninstalling and deleting the product, but that failed also.
The only recourse seems to be to re-install it from the 3 factory backup DVDs that I made when I got the laptop. But I have a feeling that all I can do is recover (overwrite) the C drive from the recovery DVDs - either all or nothing. Is that correct?

I am not super familiar with laptops, however I have noted that at the top
of his desktop, there is an utility program, a toolbar that I think is called Empowering Technology. My friend uses it mainly to check his battery charge
level, although there are a few other tools in this bar, like "acer eData Security Management".
The problem is, if I reinstall Windows, all programs on the Windows partition will be erased. That included this program/toolbar. And I don't know where to get back it back...like where to download a new one for installation.

Feb 9, 2010I got a Acer Aspire AOD250-1838 as a gift for my gf for Valentine's Day. It came with a Windows 7 Starter OS, but my gf needs Windows XP Pro for her work. So the first thing, and probably the stupidest thing, that I did when I got the computer is completely wipe out every single thing on the hard drive and try to load XP. I tried installing from external optical drive and from Acronis images, and all have failed. The system doesn't seem to like to go into any OS now. When installing from CD the system crashes when the installer tries to find old Windows on the HD. When installing from images the system crashes when it just starts to load windows. The crash is the famous blue screen.
I tried Linux too, and it would work if it's not booted from the hard drive. But I can't get any OS on HD to boot.
I start realizing there is some kind of D2D recovery system built into the computer, and might be in the BIOS as well. But now I don't have anything form factory on the hard drive, and going back to Windows 7 Starter is not an option. So plz plz tell me what can I do to install my own Windows XP on this thing.
Acer :: Aspire 5100 Cannot Install Windows XP
Mar 12, 2009my gf has aspire 5100 with vista in it, and it sucks so I decided to install xp to it. I reseached from google that does it support xp and does it work and found out that it does, you just need to make custom xp-install disc to get the HDD drivers so that xp-installation finds the HDD.
When I install xp, I get past the filecopying-part fine, then it reboots as usual and tries to start windows, but in the loading screen with xp-logo it gives me bluescreen.
0x0000007B is the error.
I've tried many installing over and over again, but with no luck. Its possible that my xp-cd is damaged in some way, but I just dont think so.
Any solution? Seems like everyone else has had no problems with installing xp to aspire 5100 vista.
I believe that istalling vista back works, but its not the right solution, since its piece of **** and slow as ****.
Acer Aspire E5-551 :: Fresh Install On SSD - Windows 8.1
Feb 25, 2015I bought a Aspire E5-551 on amazon second hand. Had a fresh Windows 8.1 on it. Turn it on, mess around, everything seems fine if not slow due to the HDD. Pop in a new SSD I bought that tested OK on with another computer. Install Windows 8.1 Via USB. It get to the part will it tell me to restart, upon restart it will always hang at getting ready or some such thing. I let it set for hours, even the spinning icon stropped spinning.
So I reset the laptop via the power button. I get the error "The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error" and tell me to restart. It will keep doing this no matter how many times I click restart. Never had this issues with all the other computers or laptops I ever installed 8.1 one but the internet has a solution. While the "The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error" is on screen you can bring up cmd line via shift+f10 and bring up regedit. The fix is to go to HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion and change the setup.exe key to 3. After this I'll get some issues with blank screens upon restart but after 1 or 2 reboots i get to my desktop. Though the desktop doesn't have all the apps and things a fresh windows install comes with.
Like IE is not even listed on the start menu. Looks like a halve baked install or something. But everything is fine. While like this I can reboot the machine a bunch. Click around, seems okay. Seems like all is well till I start installing drivers. Ill go installing drivers then the machine will stop responding to clicks but the mouse still moves around. When I reboot it like this Ill get struck at "getting ready" and i'll never be able to get to my desktop again. Now I can get into safe mode and Ill uninstall all the drivers but when I try to do a regular boot ill just hang at "getting ready'.

Mar 23, 2009i just bought an acer aspire 5102wlmi without a HD for a friend. so i went and bought a HD and proceeded to install windows XP home service pack 2.
the problem is it constantly stays in a loop, i load and boot from the disc, it copies all the files, reboots, loads the files, says starting windows, and then just starts all over by going back to the setup screen. i've formatted the drive and made multiple attempts. had anyone else had this problem? if so what is the solution?

Sep 20, 2008I just reinstalled my Acer Aspire 5930G (844G32BN) with Vista Home Premium. Everything looks fine except the wireless connection. My computer cannot find any wireless networks (although my other notebook finds all 3 around me). It looks like as if the notebooks WiFi signal would not work.
Could anyone tell me what exact drivers the original installation have? I tried the Intel ProSet/Wireless drivers now. The WiFi led flashes, but cannot find any networks.With the original installation I had no problem regarding the WiFi.

The properties for the Program Files folder doesn't have any premissions set, and when I try to set some it says access is denied.
