View 10 RepliesI'm looking @ getting a new 15" Macbook Pro /w 3.06 Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB RAM, and 320 GB @ 7200 RPM. I am planning on getting it as a desktop replacement and will use it for gaming and office work. I know it's going to be perfect for the latter, but am curious as to how it will hold up for the former. The Mac gaming videos I've seen online are very promising and they are the older model. How realistic would it be for me to play games using a windows OS? Also, I am better off getting XP, Vista, or Windows 7?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI want to buy a macbookpro laptop. Because I have to work with windows as well I am trying to get a sense of the processor speed running on Mac under parallels or vmware, especially on the 2.8Ghz or 3.06Ghz (but not only) processors.
Can you run super_pi (you can find it from one of the links at the bottom on this page: [url] in the windows virtual machine (parallels or vmware) with 2M digits and then post the following information:
- processor speed
- software used (parallels or vmware)
- windows os host (XP or Vista or W7)
- super_pi result (2M digits),
This is a newb question: My 1640 now has a 7200RPM hard disk. Will I be able to replace/upgrade it in the future with SSD?

read that thread in the gaming forums
Quote:
The service works with pretty much any Windows or Mac machine as a small browser plug-in. Optionally, you will also be able to purchase a small device, called the OnLive MicroConsole, that you can hook directly into your TV via HDMI, though if your computer supports video output to your TV, you can just do it that way instead. Of course, you can also just play on your computer's display if you don't want to pipe it out to your living room set.
loots of potential in this. I might just need to upgrade to 17" MBP for this in the future.
I heard them say during the WWDC: New screen with 60% higher Gamut.
Who knows which MBP has it? I think it was 15 inch? all models?
I'm thinking about snagging a copy of iWork 2009 because, well, I don't like Office 2008 even though I paid a marginal price for the suite as available from my medical school. I realize that Office 2011 is coming within the next seven months or so, but until then...
I haven't been able to find a thing out about iWork 2010, so I'm assuming I'd just spring for the '09 version. In experimenting with the trial, I've noticed that even a simple import of a text-only .docx is formatted differently; it seems like the line spacing is different, because in the imported .pages that Pages makes from the source .docx I made, there are two additional lines of text on the first page. Why is this?
My big thing is that all created works must be easily taken to a different platform; I like OS X, but I have no allegiance to it or to Apple, and if a solid competitor to the 15" MBP comes along, I would seriously consider switching back to Windows 7. I rarely need to share .doc/.docx (or any other Office suite) files with others for their own editing, so PDF exports would suffice most of the time.
I know that .pages files are essentially archives containing XML data and a .pdf of the document, but I'd hate to have to hand-convert a bunch of XMLs if I did switch back. And sadly, Pages doesn't natively save to a .doc/.docx -- it only exports (though I did read about a hack to change that some time ago). Formatting mismatches for something as minor as line spacing are just concerning.
when i click on the link to play the jvc everio demo video , it keep saying i need adobe flash player 8.0 or higher , but i have installed the latest version 10.0.32.18, 3 times and i still get the message.

Dear Friends can u give me your valuable suggestions , is this good system or worth for money? I'd like to do some gaming, definitely video editing/production and watch movies.
Also... typical office apps, and photo manipulation, program compilation, dot net program development . I like to keep my hardware for five years, buying the best available architecture, but not necessarily the top of the line in performance.
with Apple slashing the price of the Mac Book Pro 13, I am in a dilemma between MBP 13" and Dell Studio XPS 13.
Since I will not be using my laptop for gaming can you guys please help me deciding between the 2?
[ I will be using it for movies, web surfing, college work - Matlab, Photoshop etc.]
I am planning on buying a laptop for college in late june/ early july. The notebook I've had my eye on is the dell studio xps 16 (specs below):
Intel T9550 (2.6 Ghz, 6 MB Cache)
4 GB 1066MHz RAM
500 GB (7,200 RM) SATA - or - 256GB SSD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 (512MB)
FullHD RGBLED LCD 1920x1080 Screen
BluRay Drive
Intel 5300 WLAN Wireless-N (3x3) Mini Card
Additional 9-Cell Battery
ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
Now, will there be any developments or changes during the time between now and when I plan to buy the laptop? also, any thoughts on 500GB 7,200 RM vs. 256 GB SSD... I'll have the money for the SSD, but I'm not sure if the cost/benefit of getting it is worth it.
But mainly, I'd like to know some insight about the future of the system (ie. price-drops, upgraded parts, et cetera)
In short: My e1705 with a quadro 2500m is idling at temperatures at least 10 degrees celsius higher than it was before: 70 degrees with slow fans compared to ~60 with slow fans (I had fans kick in at 65 to bring it back to 60). There have been no hardware/software changes to the system.
So I read the guides about applying AS5 to your GPU and I thought I'd try to get better temps.
I cleaned off all the old compound from both the GPU and the heat spreader, and placed about a pea-sized piece on the GPU (see attachment). It wasn't the most perfect blob of AS5, but volume-wise I think it was pretty close, and ideally it would be smoothed out when I tightened the screws on the heat spreader.
I stuck to a "less is more approach" having heard that all I needed to do was fill the minor imperfections of the contact surfaces.
They were in the high 80's low 90 yesterday, now there higher. I'm thinking of calling dell up, but the motherboard was just replaced (card reader problem). Should I ask for an upgrade to the 1640? or what I've had many problems with my M1530...
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy case manager messed up the order on my SECOND 'replacement' notebook. She promised me upgrades across the board and messed up the order again, and forgot the screen res., fingerprint reader, extra battery, etc. So, now HP calls me and tells me that she was promoted and gave me a new case manager, Elric, who tells me there is nothing he can do and I can take it or leave it. Apparently he is one of 3 "executive" case managers and he says he is the top of the food chain.
Is there anyone else I can call to rectify this situation? Does anyone have a corporate # or something?
This has been a 6 week ordeal for me. Originally, I ordered a POS spec'd dv5t, but it came with a blown out speaker. So after hours with customer service, they gave me a case manager, Angelia, who promised me the world with upgrades and free accessories. Well, the replacement notebook she sent contained none of these upgrades. So i called her back and she said she would order a new replacement, but at that point they stopped customizing dv5t's, so she said she would order a dv7t for me. Well, she FINALLY got around to it, like 3 weeks later after having to call her constantly. We discussed the specs and I even sent her a screenshot of what I wanted so she wouldnt mess it up again. So what happens? She orders it with WXGA+ instead of WSXGA, no extra battery, no fingerprint reader, no hard drive upgrade, no tv tuner.. but she throws in a blu ray drive which i didnt even want! wow, seems like she wasnt even paying attention AGAIN. But now I cant even speak with her, as I'm sure she would some rectify this for me, as she was very cool. But this Elric guy is a complete bag.
I'm in the market for a new laptop; either the Studio 15 or the Studio XPS16. I'm still chuggin along on my Dell Inspiron 600m from 2003! Anyway,
it came with a copy of Windows XP, so I could do a clean OS install anytime I wanted.
Does Dell still do this? I'm waiting for Win7 to come out on Oct 22, and I basically want to have a clean install of the retail OS on my new computer.
I want to purchase the dell studio 14z but am looking to get the best price possible.
Do you think if I wait dell would most likely have a back to school sale for the 14z as it is marketed towards students?
Right now I can get 170 dollars off (E-value and EPP). Should I wait or bite the bullet?
I'm curious about a few things. What would you rather have for now? at simliar specs? IE 256 Mb cards of each.
Currently th M1710 is the only laptop at 17" that has DVI support. One thing though, when the XPS is replaced by the new model, it will be based on the current 1720 right? So in other words the new XPS will not have DVI? Are there any threads or information speculating on the new XPS?
Oh and one other thing. Whats a good multiplayer game? I like call of duty 2 but have been out of the game scene for a while.
Just came across this tidbit of information...

Do you think that the new m1730s already have that inside?
Just wondering if there's any idea how long the bubbly Espresso imprint design will continue? Still deciding whether to pull the trigger on a laptop now though I don't like the finish (DV5t imprint was the best!) or wait for the next refresh, whenever that may be....
Am I the only one that thinks it's a little too cute for a laptop? It's not like a drive a VW bug w/the daisy hubcaps or anything
problem with the low volume output through the speakers the M1530 came with originally.

I had the HDX16 on my shortlist for a new laptop but in all of the recent announcements by HP on refreshed Pavilions and new Envy laptops, the HDX has been conspicuous by it's absence. No information at all and I can still only see it available in Win Vista format from retailers, not Win 7. what the future holds for HDX? It looks like a good choice for a general multimedia laptop. Any refresh or updates planned? Or are HP likely to discontinue it?

This on Vista, havent tried updating the bios or sound drivers yet.
Looks like my original 90W gave up the ghost. Lucky I have access to a couple in the meantime, but need to get a new one, prob off ebay. (not looked yet)
Any reason or benefit from say 130w - 150w Bricks?
I just received a refurbished HP ENVY TouchSmart m6-k125dx Sleekbook. I can't set a resolution higher than 1366 x 768 though according to specs the native resolution is 1920 x 1080. I updated the Intel HD graphic driver and the BIOS but that did not work. Did HP possibly reinstall a wrong display as part of the refurbish?
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy laptop's lcd screen died 1 month after guarantee expiry. Since original LCD replacement screens are crazy expensive, I bought physically compatible lcd screen, that supports same resolution.
But I cannot get any higher resolution as 1024x768 (I've used 1400x1050 on original). I suspect there is a problem with drivers - my screen is recognized as plug and play monitor, but settings won't offer me any higher screen resolution.
I own an HDX16T. Day 1, I burnt RECOVERY DISKS and then I proceeded with a clean install with a new vista install.
I decided to try to restore the notebook with those recovery disks. Guess what? It appears that you can no longer use those disks without having the original HP RECOVERY PARTITION?
I just simply can't use it anymore. I can't restore my notebook to factory condition anymore. The only option I have is to Click "FINISH" and reboot.
