Dell :: E1705 / Nvidia 7 Series / Upgrade / Cooling

Dec 29, 2008

Having geforce go 7900 gs 256 Mb (17 inch, 1920x1200) died after 2 years of using it, but played only moderately. I noticed sometimes GPU was over 80 C. No more warranty, so I plan on getting a replacement.

7900 gs is 20 Watt current consumption. There are cards like 7900 GTX, FX2500M tht have 45 Watt. So roughly we could expect twice as much heat made if replaced to a 45 Watt card. Am I right here? Now, even 20 Watt card (7900 GS) was overheating with only single heat pipe. 7900 GTX or FX2500 would have to have for sure 2 heat pipes, but since we have twice as much heat, do we have the same situation?

What is your experience with 45 Watt video cards in Inspiron E1705 / 9400 ? Do they overheat (and break) as often as 20 Watt and single pipe cards?

And second question - reliability of refurbished cards or "working pulls" How long can they last? I know it all depends, how the previous owner was using it, etc. When buying used card, what possibly was overheated more? 20 Watt single pipe or 45 Watt dual pipe (like the question above)
I would appreciate any oppinion and experiences from you.

In the future, I plan to better take care of cooling, remove dust more often, use AS5 paste, fan control, use dual pipe. Anything else can be done? Maybe going to 20 Watt with 2 pipes - would probably cool down system the best.

Dell :: Inspiron 9400/e1705 NVidia 7900GSWindows 7 X64 Drivers Tip!?

I've been using the Windows Vista (32) that came with my Inspiron 9400, now I'm going to (thankfully) upgrade to Windows 7 x64 and I'd like to know if anybody know (had used/ tested/seen) what would be the best and great driver for this nVidia GeForce 7900GS on W7 64.

I looked over nVidia website and there is currently no certified driver for this card + Windows version, so for what I see, we'll have to go either laptopvideo2go and mobileForce,

Dell :: E1705 Main Board Is Frying Nvidia GO Cards

Mar 9, 2008

I have this Dell e1705 Core 2 Dou, 2 GB Ram and an ATI video card. I've been buying Nvidia's GO 7900 GS off ebay. some of them arrive here dead. the rest arrive, they work for 1 hour and then become like the rest, lines on the screen, color blinking, in windows, the Bios, and even in safe mode, I put my ATI back and everything works fine, only two of the 6 I got worked for like 1 hour, 1 just stopped working completely, and the other one that I bought a week ago worked for 1 hour then red flickers and pixels started appearing on the screen then it got messed up completely like the pictures show.

Is it possibble that its the mainboard, or any short, and why just Nvidias and not the ATI. I think I just have bad luck with the cards I bought.

Dell :: Explain Technical Details Of E1705/9400 NVidia Card Options?

Dec 24, 2007

Could a few technologists in the know give me a detailed rundown on the primary differences between the three nVidia card options for the E1705/9400?

I quickly replaced my original X1400 with a dual pipe 7900GS but I am now interested in either moving up to a 7900GTX or a 7950GTX. I know I will also need to upgrade to the 130W or 150W PS as well.

I am looking for comparison information regarding memory, clockspeeds, pipeline counts, pixel/vertex units, pixel/fill rates, processing bandwidth, etc.

I am also curious about a good source for the purchase of any of these items. I have found one posting on eBay for a 7950GTX. I am interested to know if I can purchase directly from Dell, or save a few bucks by purchasing from eBay or a forum member. I also know I have read that there are equivalent Quadro (sp?) cards which will work in my machine. Are there any disadvantages to taking this route?

I know I could dig through a thousand plus posts on the topics and find all of the information I want, but I also know how much you guys thrive on expressing your technical expertise on subjects such as this ..........................

Acer :: 5920 Cpu Upgrade & Cooling Fan

Oct 15, 2009

I just replaced the T5550 cpu with a T9500 (SLAYX) in my Acer Aspire 5920. I cleaned and applied Arctic Silver 5 to the cpu and gpu. It started right up, but now it seems like the cooling fan doesn't ever shut down. When the temp. hits about 55 deg C.
(according to speedfan 4.39), the fan runs at full speed. With the T5550, it would need to reach about 65 deg before running full speed, but not for long.

I have system BIOS v.1.3810

Is it possible that I did a poor job of applying the Arctic Silver 5? Any settings that

I need to change for the fan to stop continuously running?

Dell :: Upgrade 1 Yr Old E1705

Sep 4, 2007

As the title says I bought my E1705 in August of last year (2006). Current specs of the parts I'm looking to upgrade:

Processor: T2500
RAM: 1GB DDR2 @333MHz x2
GPU: GeForce Go 7900GS

I've been reading and trying to figure out which processors are compatable with my mobo. I think I have the "Napa" style mobo because I bought it in 2006, right? What options does that give me to upgrade to?

Also, is it possible to get two dimms of 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM? Will my system support the 4 gigs of RAM or will I be wasting money because I've already reached the cap at 2gigs? Can my system support DDR2 800MHz RAM?

What are my options for GPU replacements? I feel like I have a pretty solid part right now but if I can upgrade it I'd like to. The only restraint is that I don't want to mod my laptop, so if I have to break something or cut something out then I don't want to do it. So basically I'm looking for GPUs that I can just drop in without any modding.

Sony :: Cooling Pad For SZ Series

My SZ-770 become extremely loud and can be used as waffle maker sometimes.

I've disassembled it and cleaned all the dust using compressed air, but it's too hot and too noisy.

I'm thinking about buying a cooling pad to partially solve the problem. But most of pads have fans on the bottom and I'm not sure that it will fix my problem.

Can anyone recommend a good pad for SZ series?

Dell :: E1705 Cannot Upgrade To 7900GTX

Jan 24, 2008

After reading a ton about upgrading my e1705 to a 7900GTX (actually, an FX2500M), I went ahead and bought one on eBay. To my horror, the card doesn't fit.

I snapped off the little plastic parts that keep the left heatpipe from fitting; that isn't the problem. The problem is that Dell seems to have modified the motherboard to prevent such installations (my e1705 is a fairly recent one). At the top portion of the video card, there's a connector that matches a connector on the motherboard underneath. That motherboard connector is too high, which prevents the video card from inserting into its PCI Express socket. In addition, the videocard post on the upper right (where the screw would insert into the thread) is missing. That part isn't so important, but that damn connector definitely is.

1) Has anyone seen this before, on a newer model e1705?

2) The connector appears to be soldered on, so I'm not sure I could remove it even if I wanted to. Does anyone know if I *can* remove it, and if so, how? What is this connector used for? I assume it's some sort of SLI connector, since it has a matching one on the videocard itself?

Pictures will be provided upon request. I'm pretty bummed, as it appears I'm screwed. I'm also steamed at Dell, which has evidently modified their motherboards to prevent cheapskate upgrading.

Dell :: HDD Upgrade In E1705: Clean XP Install

Jan 6, 2009

I'm installing a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive into my E1705.

Yesterday, I pulled the old drive and put the WD into the bay, booted from Windows MCE CD, Windows installed files, rebooted and went to the GUI install screen. I tried to install 5 times and every time I would get the infamous 33/34 minute hang up.

I've read that this is usually due to the install media being corrupted, or Windows not being able to install a piece of hardware. So I also tried my second, never before used Windows MCE install disk (Dell had sent me two copies). That produced the same results.

My only conclusion is one of two possibilities. One, I just got a bum hard drive. I already have a replacement drive on the way from newegg to cover that base.
Two, I read that some copies of OEM operating system disks will not install with certain changes in hardware. Anyone heard of this? Is our copies of Dell Windows MCE stripped down in some way? Is it possible that our copy of Dell Windows would not recognize a WD hard drive?

Would seem really strange that a simple change in hard drive, especially considering Dell designed the bay to be plug-n-play upgradeable, would prevent a clean install of Windows.

Both cards are MXM II (physically fit) however I'm afraid that this VGA is not on whitelist so it's not going to work - I only get blank screen, no error message, no POST, no chance of entering BIOS. I read that there is some tool that can modify BIOS - something called HP Tattoo utility however maybe it's obsolete now and has been replaced by some other utility - I can't even download it anywhere.

They know the GPU is defective and will fail far sooner than it is intended to. They are selling a ticking time bomb.

I know that they release a BIOS update but that will only delay the eventual break down a bit later after the standard warranty expires.

Sony :: Vaio Z-series NVidia Card

Jan 10, 2009

I've been eyeing a Vaio Z-series (555 or the the 590 online-only in Canada) but I want to make absolutely sure that it contains a nVidia card (9300M GS 256MB).

When I go to the stores to look at the store model (Sony store & Best Buy), in Device Manager and Display setting, I only see the Intel Mobile graphics chips. No where on the system does it appear to say that it contains a nVidia card. I tried using the Stamina/Speed slider to see if there was a different (setting it to Speed), and the graphics card still says INTEL.

For all those who own a laptop from this series, what do you see?

Do *all* Vaio Z-series have a nVidia or only certain ones? Is it just a driver/software issue for the ones at the stores?

It is not comfortable due to the fact that I have to plug in the laptop whenever I want to play the game to get the best performance.

Dell :: Precision M4300 Installed The NVIDIA Drivers For The NVidia Quadro FX 360M ...

Dec 29, 2008

I recently got a Dell Precision M4300 from a friend and had a few questions.

When i got the laptop, I reformatted the Laptop and Reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. I proceeded from Microsoft to Update to SP3 and so on.

Well I also Went to Dell's Website and downloaded all the necessary drivers (using the service tag) for this laptop and installed them.

Now here is where I ran into a problem,

When I installed the NVIDIA drivers for the NVidia Quadro FX 360M video card, everything seemed to go fine. Then I rebooted the Laptop, and now every time I reboot, my hardware acceleration is defaulted back to None, and it gives me multiple pop ups about this issue. I go into the settings and turn the Acceleration back to full and it goes away.

This is a major problem, and is really frustrating to deal with everytime the laptop is booted up.

My other problem, is when I open up Internet Explorer, It tends to lock up the browser for no reason when Loading a website. I then CTRL+ALT+DEL and attempt to close iexplore.exe via the task manager. It closes the browser but does not shut down the browser, making it impossible to browse, so then I have to reboot.

here are the specs of the PC, from the device manager and drivers I have gotten

Dell Precision M4300
NVidia Quadro FX 360M 512mb Video Graphics Card
TSST 8x dvd+-R burner
120GB Hard Drive
3.5GB of Ram
2.5GHZ T9300 Core 2 Duo Processor
1394 Port
2 USB ports
External Monitor Ports

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y580 - Disabling Nvidia Graphics In BIOS

Apr 30, 2013

I have an IdeaPad Y580, and I want to disable the Nvidia chip in the BIOS (I run Linux on it and don't use the chip.) I have the BIOS updated to the latest version from Lenovo's website. I couldn't seem to find anything in the BIOS settings that would allow me to just use the Intel HD 4000 graphics. There was an option to change from "Switchable" graphics to "UMA" graphics, but from my understanding the UMA option means using the CPU to process graphics instead of even the Intel integrated.

Is there any way to turn off the Nvidia chip, or am I stuck with it being on?
