Dell Inspiron E1405 :: Quit Working - Won't Boot
Feb 28, 2013
I have a E1405 that quit working. I replaced the keypad and got a new battery. It won't boot. The only thing that happens is the Numlock, Caps lock and a third led, which escapes me now comes on and stays on for about thirty seconds. I checked to see if the ram was loose, removed and re-installed the cmos battery, even tried my spare HD. I am thinking the system board might be toast.

My wife was on her Studio 1550 the other night. I moved the laptop a little bit so she could show me something. When I moved it, the screen went white and then it quite working. The back of the laptop and the mouse pad got real hot and smelled hot.
It will not power up at all now with the battery or the power cord. It will not do anything when you press the power button. When the power cord is plugged in the laptop continues to get very hot and actually smoked a little bit once.
What happened to the laptop or if it can be fixed? Did the motherboard get fried somehow?

A couple days ago, Windows (Vista Home Premium 64) updated to SP2 and I lost sound. Now, when I boot my computer, the mute button stays orange and also the IDT control panel does not load. When I try to load it manually, it says the driver is not accessible.
I searched online quick and it sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem--though I haven't seen any fixes.
HP hasn't listed an updated driver for my particular computer yet, and last time I tried to update my audio driver, I ended up with all of these features that for some reason didn't work and made things sound worse and run slow.
It's times like these when I wonder why the heck I put up with all the inconsistencies I've had with Vista
System restore is a very last resort for me.

Bought an Acer E 15 ES1-512-c88m first of December. Barely got 12-20 hours of use out of it. Worked fine for 3 weeks and then all of the sudden last night I opened the lid after sitting idle plugged in for 20 hours and immediately the touchpad began acting like I was trying to highlight, drag, or draw boxes around things continuously - when all I was trying to do was move he cursor. At first I assumed it was cold or confused. Shutdowns, restarts, HID driver reinstalls did nothing. After a hour or two of troubleshooting the touchpad performance worsened, to where at this point NO clicks of taps of any kind will work, so I can't pick or select anything - and am forced to navigate menus and options by keyboard - many of which I can't get to.
Final result: all I can do now with the touchpad is move the cursor around, but nothing else. The clicker is mechanically free and never stuck.I'm disappointed because my older Acer 10" D255 from 2011 has never had any issues.Sadly the only impression I'm getting is that the circuitry for the "click" function either shorted or has somehow gone "out of spec" or "out of cal". There is no way to even find out what kind of touchpad it is, because it's not listed on any data sheets.I'm guessing the best thing to do is get it replaced free of charge because it is practically new, but I wondered if there may be any other solutions with less hassle. Who would do this - Acer or NewEgg (where I got it from)?

Within the last couple of weeks, the sound quit working on my laptop. Since purchasing, I have been able to mute the sound and turn it back on with no trouble, but now when I unmute the sound, nothing happens. The sound icon and the Volume Mixer all show that the sound is working and is set at the highest volume, but nothing comes out. Given that this laptop has beatsaudio, it's frustrating.

My problem is when I try to watch a movie or play an audio CD, the sound comes out very distorted. This problem doesn't happen when I watch videos on the internet or anything loaded onto my computer or when I rip a CD/DVD or burn one. The sound has the same distorted quality no matter what program I use.
I've tried updating the driver, disabling digital playback (vs. analog), and everything else I could think of. Please help!

I am working on a friends laptop, a Dell Inpiron e1405, and it won't power on. He had it start downloading an update for his iPod walked away for a bit and when he came back, the computer was off and it won't turn back on. We have tested his power cord with a multi-meter and we know the right amount of power is getting to his laptop. When we plug it into the wall, the LED comes on indicating the battery is charging. Also, about every 5th time we push the power button, the power LED lights up then goes off.
What I tried:
I unplugged the power cord and took out the battery and the CMOS battery then held down the power button for a minute. Then I put it back together and nothing happened.
I took the entire laptop apart so that it was just a motherboard in the case with nothing else attached. Then I put everything back in to see it something just needed reseated. Nothing yet.

I have an Aspire E1-572 that is five months old, running Win 8.1. I've loved the notebook to this point, but now the speakers have quit working completely (the headphone jack still works). I called tech support and they had me delete and reinstall the driver (Realtech high definition audio), which made no difference.
She then told me the next step is to refresh my Windows installation, which will apparently blow away everything I've installed since it was new. I declined to do that because I really don't want to spend an entire day reinstalling all the programs, even though I have the data backed up. Is this truly the only way to make a final determination if it's a hardware or software problem?

I have just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition 7720. It came with a preinstalled Windows 8 (so 64-bit and mandatory UEFI boot). I want to use Linux (more specifically, Archlinux) for work and Windows for games, so dual boot is needed.
I almost completed the Linux installation except for the bootloader: I need to boot Linux from UEFI and didn't manage to do it so far. Here is what I did after I received the PC:
-Disabled Secure Boot; updated BIOS to version A12
-Resized the main Windows partition and created a few partitions for Linux;
-Switched to legacy boot mode and managed to boot a MBR-bootable Arch linux installation USB drive;
-Installed most of the system switched back to UEFI boot mode, Secure Boot off.
At this time I needed to boot the kernel from UEFI for the bootloader installation program to have mandatory access to the EFI environment variables. So I created an UEFI-bootable Archlinux installation USB drive (with a FAT partition) but so far I couldn't manage to successfully boot this drive from UEFI instead of Windows 8.
I think I really tried every single combination, such as:
different USB ports; different boot entries created with F2 boot setup, with different parameters; different orders for the boot entries; hit my boot entries directly within F12 boot menu.
No matter what, in UEFI mode the system always boots the Windows partition.
Also, I could not find any relevant manual or software documentation about the A12 BIOS on the Dell site, did I miss something?
The solution that the user described in this thread to UEFI-boot to a DVD did not work for me with a USB drive.

He says the only things that are not working for sure are the keyboard, LCD, and 1 of the RAM sticks, the one located underneath the keyboard.
However, he says the motherboard is slightly bent and the CPU looks like its in good working condition, so he is pretty much selling the CPU (T7200) 60gb hard drive, 512mb ddr2, 6 cell battery, wireless card, and fan cooler, and possibly dvd drive i haven't heard back from him.
I'm really interested in the CPU, but I don't know if it works, neither does he. He just states that the laptop won't start.

I am thinking of upgrading the hard drive on my Dell E1405. I was just curious if there is some kind of limit as to how big a drive I can get or is just whatever my wallet will tolerate.
In addition, can anyone point me to the "correct" hard-drive that my laptop supports? (I'm assuming it's a SATA drive.)
I wasn't sure what type (if there is one) that I need to buy for my laptop. Just anything on amazon or fry.com, or something along those lines.

I have a problem with my E1405 with its lcd backlight turned off about 1 second after opening the lid.
I can still see Windows running when I look really closely.
According to what I've read it's most probably a faulty inverter. So I bought a replacement off eBay and installed it

I am running windows vista 32 on the new macbook pro unibody. It works horrible. Constantly freezing and with tons of audio distortion. Many MacBook Pro unibody users are having this problem with Vista. There is no fix at the current moment. Although some have reported, success with different video drivers and using a program known as "Anti-Lag" to fix the audio distortion issue.
