Dell Studio XPS 1647 :: Stuck At Splash Screen - Volume Down LED Flashing In PSA
Sep 10, 2014
Studio XPS 1647 laptop can't boot past POST and stuck at Dell splash screen with progress bar at ~80%. After holding down FN and pressing the power button, all three volume LEDS would flash twice, immediately followed by the volume UP and DOWN keys flashing, and then followed by just the Volume Down LED flashing.
Recently my Studio XPS 1647 has had overheat problems, and sometimes they would cause BSOD with broken screen images. The BSOD always came with bcode 116 error: this is apparently video card related. So last weekend I opened the case, removed the heat sink and the fan. The heat sink vent was completely blocked with a thick layer of dirt, so it's no wonder for overheating. I cleaned up the heatsink vent and the fan, cleaned up the top of CPU chip and the top of GPU chip, reapplied thermal paste and put everything back together. After that, the machine couldn't pass the Dell splash screen on boot. I've already checked the discussions here and followed suggestions on holding down the power button to remove static, reseating the memory card etc., but they are of no use.
Finally I followed the instructions on starting up ePSA. I've tried it repeatedly, and every time the boot always stuck at the Dell splash screen with the progress bar at about 80% with or without applying ePSA. The SPA screen never came up if I held down FN+Power button. The difference between a generic boot and a PSA boot is that if I held down FN+Power button, all three volume LEDS would flash twice, immediately followed by the volume UP and DOWN keys flashing, and then followed by just the Volume Down LED flashing.
I've read from a few discussions talking about all three volume LEDS flashing would be a motherboard problem. But in my case it's three LEDs flashing twice, followed by volume UP and DOWN keys flashing once, and then followed by just the Volume Down LED flashing continuously. What this PSA blinking code means?

I bought a new X1 Carbon (20A7) a week ago and from time to time the laptop gets stuck on the ThinkPad splash screen when booting. I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then it boots fine. My brother has this problem with T540p, although this happens to him a LOT more often (also, if he waits patiently for 10-20 minutes, the system boots eventually, I havent tried that on my X1).
It doesn't matter if the AC is connected, whether there is something connected to USB ports, whether it was a restart or just normal boot, there is no pattern that I can see, this seems random. We tried updating the BIOS to the newest version, our USB ports are not bent or anything, the SSD with the OS is set as the first boot device. This still happens. I see there are more people with thinkpads who have the similar problem, but their solutions do not apply (if there were any).

Just curious if anyone else is having this problem/glitch when I unplug the laptop from AC power and the screen brightness is turned up about more than 1 tick the screen turns really red and dark but then brightens up a second later.
It seems odd that it turns mostly red and then back up to normal in a second

System specs:
Lenovo T430U
Intel i5-3427U
8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz SoDIMM Memory
HDD 500G 7200rpm Toshiba
mSATA 24GB Samsung Cache
Win 8 Pro, upgraded to 8.1
Â
I rarely use this machine but a couple of months ago I went to boot it up and found that I was not able to get past the Windows splash screen. Sometimes I don't even get the Windows splash screen, I just get a black screen. Rarely I get a Windows screen saying that it is diagnosing a system problem or something to that effect and I can even get to where it will allow me to do some Windows diagnostics but nothing ever comes of it and the process is extremely slow.
Â
I called Lenovo, but of course my machine is out of waranty so the tech just gave me a few pointers and said I could send it in to the depo but the potential repair cost could range up to about 75% of what I paid for the machine in the first place. Anyways, after having me try a few things in the BIOS he suggested that it was likely the hard drive. I mistakenly thought from the time that I bought this machine that the OS was installed on the 24 GB SSD so I ordered a new SSD and swapped it in. This made no difference at all as I have now learned that the mSATA SSD drive is merely for cache to speed up booting.
Â
I am afraid that this means the main HDD is at fault, and quite frankly, if I replace it I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7. But I do have pictures and docs that I would like to salvage if possible.

I have recently acquired an Acer 7220G notebook. Every morning when I switch it on it freezes on the acer splashscreen. I then reboot and it will always load up on the second go.
I have tried switching it off during the day and on again but is always ok. The problem only occurs when the power has been off for a number of hours. It is getting incredibly frustrating have to startup twice each morning.

My laptop froze and I was unable to do anything so I forced shutdown on it, I rebooted it and I noticed I was on the boot screen for a long period of time (about 10 min).
I ran the System Quick test in the UEFI BIOS and everything passed except
"Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED".

I have an Acer 8930G, it's knocking on some years (approx 7ish) and this is the first problem I have had with it. When i turn it on, the normal Acer screen shows up and then where it would normally load to windows it just blacks out. There is still power as the all the lights are still working and there is a white-ish light which looks inside the base of the screen. I have looked around on the web and have tried the flashlight on the screen and also removing battery / power cable and holding down the power button for a minute and rebuilding and trying again, but to no avail. I am able to get onto the BIOS screen, and it did look like the boot device in position 1 was the BD drive, I moved this back to the hard drive but still the same....

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 that I have been using for quite a long time. Recently it started acting up, and now it won't start up past the Dell logo. It simply goes to a black screen with a flashing dash. I've restarted it a few times, tried pushing F8, and gone into F12. I tried the Diagnostics through F12, but it takes an extremely long time and has never finished so far. I tried it again this morning, and periodically throughout the test a message like this has shown up:
Error Code 0123. Msg: Error Code 2000-0123 Msg: Memory - integrity test failed. The given error code and message can be used by Dell Technical Support to diagnose problem. Do you want to continue testing?
Yes or No or Retry
I'm not sure what exactly this means, but it keeps popping up. I would like to get through to start up my computer all the way, but that doesn't seem to be an option. Is there anyway for me to wipe it without F8? My cd slot won't open, and I don't have disks anyways. Is it possible to fix it via USB drives? Or F12?

I am looking to get a Studio XPS 16 soon, but can't quite decide on which model to get and had a few questions...
1) What is the battery life of the 1647 (i5) compared to the 1645 (i7) assuming they have the same specs. I've read that i5's should last longer, but I really couldn't find anything comparing the two for these systems.
2) When configuring the 1645 and 1647 side-by-side with the same specs. The 1647 is about the same price as the 1645, if not more (depending on which processor selected). I thought the i5's were supposed to be less expensive than the i7's. Since they are about the same price, would it be better to go with the i7? Any reason to choose the i5 over i7?

Got windows 7 on my g555, with truecrypt on the drive, if it matters. Â Last night, closed down the cover of my laptop before i fell asleep, like always, today it doesn't respond at all when I opened it back up. Â Forced it to shut down, and haven't seen anything but a black screen since.
Â
The power light comes on, the fan comes on, and that's about it. Â Can't get to the bios, can't do ANYTHING. Â Tried unplugging it for a while, pressing power 10 times, holding power down for a minute, ran the battery entirely dry THEN discharged the caps, ...I've read many solutions where its the built up static charge that's the problem, but not here. Â I've tried all versions of the solution I could find, all very similar, but none worked. Â I took out my RAM and put it back in, and same for the hard drive. Â No dice.
Â
The only lights I get at all are the power light, and the battery charging light next to it. Â Can't get the CAPS LOCK, num lock, any of that to do anything. Â Cannot boot by CD/DVD as I cannot change the bios, and can't get any response from any keys or key combos that I can think of (including the one-touch restore).

I'm getting this next month (or the order says I am), and I have a couple questions reading this forum:
1. I'm getting an i7 Quad Core -720, that's still a 1647 right? I keep reading that the 640 is what that goes up to, but am not sure.
2. What is throttling? I do a search on the internet and all I get is Drag Racing info Is that when the fan starts to spin super hard?
3. I've got a 1640 that I'm selling once I get it....it's new from Dell because of an exchange so no warranty (but can be upgraded by the buyer), what do you think is a fair asking price? It's a P8700 2.53 Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM 320GB HD, 512MB ATI 3670. HD screen, etc.

when I try to install the Windows 8 copy I got with my Lenovo S440 in a virtual box environment
the installation procedure hangs on the windows splash screen. I never saw a Windows 8 installation
procedure before, so I booted my laptop from the installation media to check if it is corrupted.
This works fine. A loading dot circle is displayed under the logo after a few seconds and than after quiet
a while the lenovo wizard is shown... so it has to be an issue with the virtual box.Â
I attached a screenshot to show you where it hangs.

Im thinking about picking up this bad boy but I dont want to get caught like I did with my Inspiron 1520 when I bought it 3 years ago (I bought it and then 3 days later they bought out the 1525 which was 20% lighter etc).
Also i've heard lots of things regarding XPS machines running very hot, is it very bad? Or is it one of those things that are just blown out of proportion?

I currently have the Studio XPS 1645. My uses for the machine are client visits, presentations, and occasionally gaming on the road.
I probably only log 5 hours a week on the laptop 3 weeks a month and 30 or so in the other week (when I am not at home).
I have read about the throttling issue and this is my last day to return. So knowing my usage pattern. Would you keep the quad core or change out for the 1647.

From what I've heard it seems like the Dell Studio XPS 1647 has good enough specs to play a good number of games. But I want to ask the community who owns a Studio XPS 1647 to give me their opinion on it when gaming on it. Note that I'm well aware that the Dell Studio XPS 1647 isn't made for just gaming. Anyways I'm planning on buying one but I'm not too convince to do so.
I plan on playing games on the Studio XPS 1647 most of the time, but I'm also willing to do other things such as surfing on the internet, homework, etc.. From looking at the specs I believe that it would be a good computer to buy, but having to look at the graphic card (ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB) I'm not too sure that I'll be able to play the games I want to play with the graphic details I want to play in. When I say games I mean like Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2 etc..

So if you have followed my system you know what I have gone through, if not just know that it's in the UPS system making its way back to Dell.
I'm planning on re-ordering either before or after I receive my refund, but before would only be possible if I can get my system down to ~2500.
My original system is below in my signature for $2453.00 (includes tax + shipping) .....

Hey guys I have had my SXPS 1645 for almost 8 months now and I recently have had issues with it. Whenever I turn it on, it seems to boot fine (maybe a few more clicks then usual) and the boot up screen is tinted blue and the screen flashes. The OS seems to work fine as it logs in and everything, yet the screen tint and flashing remains. I assume its a problem with the RGBLED display, but I am not sure how exactly I can remedy this problem.

I'm pretty disappointed since the whole reason I bought this computer was for photo editing and the RGB Led screen was just perfect. But the Dell rep tells me that they are no longer offering that screen and that they will be sending me a 15.6 inch WLED.
They are still checking with the dispatch people to make sure that they aren't shipping the RGB Led, but I was wondering what my options were? I'm tempted to ask Dell to give me the Studio 17 instead, since it seems to be one of the last Dell computers to offer the RGB Led.

I have a studio 14z that has been sitting for approximately 5 - 6 months without being connected to a power adapter or turned on. Needless to say, when I tried to power it up via the battery, there was nothing there. Pushing the button on the bottom of the battery does not cause any lights to flash.Â
This doesn't surprise me, but even if I plug it into it's AC adapter and take the battery out, it will not power on. Nothing happens. No lights (except on the power adapter) no fans spinning, nothing. If I have the battery in place, the light that is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging does not turn on. Basically it is "dead". It worked fine before sitting dormant.Â
Is it a lost cause? I just had it apart to check cabling, etc. and can't see anything obvious. Is there anyway to wake it up? I know the power adapter works as it powered another laptop just fine.Â

It looks like Dell will be upgrading to the mobility HD 5730 (which is lame, by the way, since there will amost certainly now be no gddr5 memory but thats for another thread).
But my question is whether they have enabled the switchable graphics or are making us pay for an IGP we will never be able to use.
I'll bet the lazy engineers at Dell wont bother with it and argue that you dont need intergrated graphics if you have discrete graphics and so on ......

today I bricked my new 1645 when I was examing the BIOS for the 1647. The BIOS release 1647_A00.exe released this month automatically begins flashing on an 1645
and does not seem to check compatibility or confirm with the user before it updates.
The BIOS is completely incompatible with the 1645 to say the least, so be very careful if you download it on to a non-1647 system.
Dell is building a new system due to this really sad event. Rip XPS 1645 - December 5th 2009.

Turns out from the Dell Canada website that the new and (supposedly) improved studio xps 1647 will only sport the ATI's mobility 5730 which incidentally does not support gddr5- EVEN AS AN OEM OPTION! Many expected to see the mobility 5770 in the updated SXPS'S or at the very least, a 5750 WITH 1GB OF GDDR5. The 5730 is simply unacceptable! Dell charges TOP DOLLAR for these little puppies and now they are cutting corners on the GPU'S! Dell should be ashamed! This laptop does not even deserve the XPS moniker. The graphics are too weak. It should be a Studio Pro 1647.
AS WE ALL KNOW ALL OF ATI'S NEW MOBILE CARDS USE A RATHER LAME 128 BIT MEMORY INTERFACE AND AS SUCH, RESONABLE PERFORMANCE CAN ANLY BE ACHIEVED WITH THE USE OF GDDR5 ram which runs at about twice the speed of GDDR3.

I am planning to get a new laptop within the next few weeks. My main purpose of use with the new laptop is Photography, so Image quality is paramount!!! I have been browsing through this forum and researched with good reviews about the dell studio 16 rgb led screen. Now problem is each model 1640,1645,1647 has it main problem of issues ranging from extreme heat, constant freezing, lock up,fan noise and the most noticeable throttling issues.
I dont plan to use the laptop to it's absoloute abilities...so hardly any gaming will be involved, just mainly phtography software and occasional movie watching. So overall which model has the less problems for what I will be using this laptop for?
My only criteria is I want the rgb led screen. Is the 1640 good enough?(is there a big peformance difference in Photo editing between a 1640,1645?
I write this thread as I dont want to spend time chasing up dell for parts, complaints and constant searching on threads for solutions! Or should I just get away from delll all together and get a Sony Vaio F series or AW? btw which screen is better Sony AW rgb screen or Dell xps 16 rgb led.
