HP/Compaq :: Display Backlight Turns Off When Laptop Open > 120º
Jan 14, 2009I'm having this problem with my Pavilion dv9700.
View 7 RepliesI'm having this problem with my Pavilion dv9700.
View 7 RepliesWhen powering my lappie on, I can hear the fans and the hard drive start, the lights come on but there is no backlight on the monitor. I did a hard boot but nothing. I tried to get into bios pressing ESCAPE or F10 after restart but same nothingness. If I can't get my lappie working, I would at least like to get data off it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a DV9000 and just yesterday it started where the screen will go black but I can see what is going on on the screen but it is extremely faint. When I close the lid for a few seconds and open it back up it the screen appears like normal but only for about twenty seconds and then returns to the black. If I hook it up to an external monitor and I can see what is going on.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy current problem is that when switching from the mobile power-saving GPU I lose the backlight on my screen when the high performance GPU kicks in. The HDMI output is displaying video when in High Performance, but the screen of the laptop will only show a picture with no backlight, and can only be seen by shining a light on the screen.Â
Just started happening the last few days, I've tried a system restore (didn't allow it), tried uninstalling all of the AMD drivers and software then reinstalling with their updated drivers, as well as the same process but with the HP drivers that came with the laptop, still the same result. Is it possible for the high performance GPU to be failing some how or is this a software issue?
I switched from using a VGA to an HDMI cable to link my external monitor to my laptop.
When I close the lid and open it back up, my laptop has no display and my desktop moves over to the External Display. The only way I get it back on my laptop display is to use the function button which just clones it and I would have to use the ATI Catalyst Control Center to get it back to normal again. I opened up Catalyst and closed the lid and I tried opening it back up. It then shows my Laptop display is disabled. Everytime I close and open the lid, it gets disabled.
Problem with my 2 week old sony vgn-z540 laptop.
Heres the problem:
When I try to use the brightness level in between LOW and HIGH, my LCD backlight would go off, and the screen would be dark and almost not visible at all. There are also vertical bars at random spots, stretching from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. I can only use it with either LOW setting or HIGH setting, nothing in between.
This problem just started on its own. I have not installed anything such as drivers or programs. No updates(was updated after the problem occured to try to fix it).
I love this laptop to death and has been the best laptop in the past 15 years. I would hate to see it go so I need this fixed.
I will update later with pictures when it gets dark here b/c the pictures now are not showing up with the bars.
i just replaced the previously matte chi mei display on my hp compaq 8510p gb967ea (WSXGA+), with a brand new lg-philips glossy one (both certified for my notebook, of course) and for the first time ever on that notebook (ie. first time since its acquisition summer 2008) i experience backlight issues now.
just like on my very old nx9030 (which happened twice while under warranty, so its been repaired for free, and then once after the warranty period), the backlight keeps turning off by itself or when touching the lid or typing a bit heavier. so i have to close the lid and open it again to make it turn on again!
i watched out for all the cables within the frame and the one going into the inverter board, so none should be squeezed or so.
shall i open it again and look for a specific cable, jack or something like that, whether something is being squeezed?
I've had the M5-581T for 1yr and has worked fine. Â Now I have followed the directions for the suggested 8.1 upgrade.
Â
Now I've been noticing intermittant events where I close the lip and the system goes to sleep. But when I choose to open the lid and wake back up the system actually turns on from a fresh boot thus losing anything I had open when the lid was closed to sleep. Â This seems to happen most when the unit is not plugged in but not all the time.
Â
Also the unit will sometimes wake back up but not have any WIFI access and state that the WIFI is turned off w/o the option to turn it back on. Â This is only fixed by closing all and restarting.
What BIOS/Drivers need to be installed to fix this or is there a Battery issue?
So press power button, blue light come on for 1/2 sec, fan and hd spin etc and then the laptop turns off,
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently took my Compaq Presario C714NR laptop on a road trip, and one day some water spilled on the case without me realizing it, so that the case and laptop were wet when I got to my hotel room. The screen no longer illuminates - I can just barely see the proper windows and images on the screen if there is bright light in the room, but it's nearly invisible. I assume that either the backlight is dead or that a wire/connection to the backlight is loose or shorted.
Several months ago I had to replace the screen when the laptop was dropped and the screen broken (bought a new replace ment screen through eBay, replaced it myself), so the screen has had a bit of a hard life.
In the past, I used to have an hp pavalion laptop. I usually kept the screen at a little past half brightness and in 3 years, the screen no longer even turns on which means the backlight is dead. The same thing is true for my mother's 17 inch lcd monitor. Now I realize that this may just be bad luck, but I don't want to risk anything with my new macbook.
What's a "safe" level to leave the brightness at? And is the LED long lasting? Is it expensive to replace? I hate dim screens but I don't want this screen to die that fast, I want to make this last AT LEAST 8 years.

I cannot open my laptop because  I forgot the  bios password..
i got my new dv5 last night and ive got a problem. The first time it happened was when i tried to make one of those back up DVD's, i open the disc recovery manager, and the computer suddenly logs off, and im reverted back to the welcome screen where i need to click my name to log back in. Every program that was running simply dissapears. I was like 'crap... i guess i cant make any back up discs'. But then it happened again when i tried to install WinRAR, it was corrupted becuase i copied the files from another computer and after i press ok in the error box it does the same thing.. 3 times i had to re-download a file i was downloading at that time. I guess it only happens when theres an error. I immediatly uninstalled norton and most of the bloatware so it cant be due to that. So now im paranoid about opening any file hoping that it wouldnt log off like that suddenly and lose my work.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an M1530 running Windows 7 64bit. I have the display set to turn off after 10 minutes.
When the display turns off I can still see a band of blue light running along the bottom of the display and at night it appears as if the entire display still has a glow to it
I bought this Envy 17 3D in December of 2010 from HP Websight. The Model is WY771AV  and runs Windows 7 with 1080P and Uses A M D 5875 Graphics. The Last 30 days, @ boot-up, the screen will turn solid white when I try to start it up. All I can do is hold power button down to power off and retry. 9 0 % of time, retry fails(does same thing), but occasionally I can go to startup repair , run system restore and use machine for 2 or 3 times before the next white-out.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS13 purchased a couple of months ago, this morning the when I started the latop the display is not working. I can see the backlight comming up when I boot it but nothing else.
The external display works and all other components seem to function properly.
my laptop screen backlight goes off, when I rest my hand on the left side of the touchpad. The darkening of the screen can be also reproduced when a small pressure is applied on the case just above the ethernet port or above the headphones port.
When the screen goes dark, I can see that everything is running normal, if I shine on it with a lamp or strong light. The resulting effect seems to be the same as if I would have lowered the brightness to minimum.
Â
When I don't press the area described above, the screen is just fine. I am sure this problem is not software or OS related. I googled it a lot and my guess is lose connection on the inverter?
Â
One last thing - idk if related - sometimes, when I boot up the laptop, the backlight is turned off and I have to adjust it by pressing F3.
I'm having trouble with HP pavilion TouchSmart 14 . My computer turns on and allows me to log in to my to log into my profile but from then on it doesn't allow me to go to my desktop it's just blank

i assumed the screen was knackered, but i installed a game a few weeks ago and it brought the display back to life, only for it to look crap again when i restarted. this also happened when i did a clean install of vista, only for the display to go bad when the updates installed.
i have tried many times, but have been unable to replicate this...............
I am pretty positive that my laptop does have a backlight. However, I didn't need it at the time and I shut it off. But now I can't turn it on. I originally remembered adjusting it through the power options and that there was a little slider to adjust the brightness of either the screen or the keyboard. I could have been wrong though, since I no longer see the second slider for the keyboard brightness. I have tried everything I could find to get the light to turn on. I used the mobility center but there is no keyboard option. I have tried the fn + spaacebar, fn +f5, and my keyboard does not have a specialized key to adjust the keyboard backlight either. How to turn on the backlight?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy hp Pavilion dv7-4157cl turns on but has no display. monitor is completely black. I connected an external monitor and still no display.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt flickers when i click something or open a folder. It also goes crazy when i put on a video.
Â
Things i've done:Â
Â
Updated drivers.
''Hold power button'' method.
Â
Clues i have:
Â
1. I remember back when i just got the laptop, it would always flicker in the exact same way when a charger was plugged in that was too weak (power out let too low message) and changing the charger always fixed it.
Â
Now i still have the same charger (i have 3 hp and 1 dell chargers at home that fit my laptop) and none of them seems to be ''enough'' (60w x2 65w x1 and 120w x1).
Â
 2. Another funny thing is that when i uninstalled my Ati Radeon HD5850 drivers completely, there was no flickering, but obviously, i need to have that as i use this laptop strictly for games)Â
Â
3. The screen refresh rate is 60hz and not possible to change,.
Â
4. There is NO flickering on an external screen (tried two tvs, both didn't clicker a bit)
Â
5. You might say it's a hardware problem, but i actually somehow got it to work without the flickering earlier tonight and stayed up all night playing and it didn't cause me any issues. It was working great.
Â
6. Occasionally the PC will freeze (could that be a battery problem? since i currently am not using one as both mine are broken and i'm waiting for a new one to ship)
Â
7. I have had 2 blue screens of death recently. One while installing ATI drivers and other i don't remember.
When I open it up with a finger or thumb near the center of the screen by the webcam I sometimes hear a small popping sound.
Sort of sounds like something is popping back into place.
It does not happen all the time. If I open from the side there is no soun
The video card is 7400go.
Yesterday I left my computer for 3 minutes unatended, and when I returned I saw that the screen was on but there was no picture. Something like a blank screensaver. So I restarted, but the screen still was not displaying anything. There is only backlight with absolutely no image whatsoever.
So I plugged in the laptop today to an external monitor, and the monitor displayed bars of RGB lines all over the place. So I am wonderring what do you guys think could have went wrong? Do you think it could be the GPU, bad connection? I can see that there is some HD activity going on through the led but nothing loads or makes a sound.
Yesterday I set my laptop on my desk and the bottom portion of the screen turned into a colored mess.
I don't exactly know how to explain it so I've placed thumbnails below to better show you what is happening. The screen remained like this until I picked it up and placed it down again, then it went back to normal. However, now every time I pick it up it does the same thing and won't return to normal unless I set it down a certain way. Has anyone had this problem before, or can anyone help me solve this issue?
I am currently running an Inspiron 9300 with a 1.60 GHz M Processor, ATI Radeon X300 128 MB, 2GB of Ram, and XP Pro.My specific screen is the 17 inch LCD WUGA.
My Dell XPS 1530 screen wont turn on. I push the power button it goes on then off, but I can hear the system starting but no picture. I have removed the battery unplugged everything and tried again to no avail. I have plugged in a separate monitor and still nothing.
