HP/Compaq :: HP 8740w- How Does It Compare To A Thinkpad
Apr 5, 2010
The specs seem great. Magnesium chassis (compared to ABS plastic for Thinkpad), durable aluminum finish, and a coated keyboard.
How is the sound compared to the Thinkpad (My W500 is VERY quiet)?
How is the track point and keyboard compared a Thinkpad?
How is the screen compared to a Thinkpad (I can't imagine it is worse!)?

considering between these, any HP owners out there that could give me some feedback (subjective+bonus objective benchmarks)?
Any reviews+video reviews of the EliteBook 8540w/8740w that you deem accurate?
How do you like the trackpad, multitouch anygood?
Display quality I hear is excellent but 16:9 format vs 16:10 for a pro line ok?

Just got my new Envy 15... I'm kind of on the fence right now whether I want to keep it or not once the MSI Gx640 comes out. It really comes down to temps... this thing is hot (also the touchpad is horrible). I reinstalled Windows, and did everything but update BIOS (still default).
When I boot the computer and it's idling both palm rests get lukewarm almost right away. This is weird considering it's not doing anything.
Right now my CPU (520m) is at 30% load and my temps are between 65c and 70c, running the Battlefield Bad Company 2 updater. The right palm rest is noticeably warm and the left palm rest is hot (still usable). The bottom of the laptop in the front is too hot to touch for more than 10 seconds.
Is this "normal"? I thought this thing was supposed to run cool idle and not get too hot with the i5. I haven't even stressed it to 100% and it's getting hot. I want to see other people's temps (JJBs temps seem way low, even at max load).

I used a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installation DVD to replace Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on my Elitebook 8740w. In the end, I used a clean installation as the upgrade option ended up with a fail error. However, after doing the clean install, it can't detect any wifi. What drivers am I likely to need to download and re-install?

how much stronger one is over the other. The m1530's is a 256mb card, but it's ddr3 and seems a lot more powerful than the typical 8600M.
Oh, and does anyone know when there'll be new colours for the studio 16? =)

My friend wants me to bring him oblivion, as he believes it will run it well (high or max settings). He has a Dell XPS M1330 laptop.
I recently ordered a Sager NP2096 pretty much specifically for oblivion, but also for hauling around a uni campus, so i wanted something light. I was told the NP2096 would run it at medium-high settings.
His dell XPS is very light, which confused me, as i thought that the XPS gaming laptops were very heavy (11 pounds), then i looked up the specs and found that his XPS isn't a gaming model.
When talking to him i was under the impression that i made a mistake ordering the Sager, because according to him, his XPS was lighter, slightly cheaper, and would even play oblivion better. I don't want to regret my purchase.

I'm interesting in buying a Dell E6400 and I would like to know the battery duration time different between using a Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator against using NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M?
Another question regarding performance, is there a visible performance gap between P8600 and P8700 CPU's?

I intend to use it primarily for some fairly intensive gaming (Fallout 3, etc), media (music, movies), and general work stuff (web surfing, word processing, etc)
I have had an IBM for the last four years and it has served me quite well. My experience with IBM tech support was always good, and the one time I had to get it fixed it was returned promptly, no questions asked.
However there is an HP ProBook that looks quite appealing.
It costs $1865
It ships with Windows XP (important to me)
It has a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo Processor
It has a 512 MB ATI video card
3GB of DDR2 Ram
It has a 320 GB 5400rpm HD
It has a 17.3" widescreen 1600x900 display
And here's the kicker: a Blu-Ray drive
The Lenovo is a Thinkpad W500. It is generally quite similar in specs, and a bit cheaper, but it has a 15.4 inch screen (albiet a higher resolution one) and lacks the Blu-Ray drive..............

I really like the new EliteBook 8450w and 8470w and I think it is time to replace my Thinkpad W500. Can anyone clue me in on how my experience might be different? I know plenty of people with consumer HP laptops but I don't expect it should be anything like that.
How is the noise (my Thinkpad is very quiet)?
How is the "feel"? The plastic body on my Thinkpad makes it feel cheep for what it is.
How are the hinges?
How is the keyboard? I absolutely love that they fit a num pad in the 15"
How is the trackpoint?

I bought a Sony Vaio with Windows 7, but the entire computer is trashed at my own expense (long story). Is there anyway to move the Windows 7 Pro operating system that came pre-loaded on the Sony Vaio to my Thinkpad T61? I have the recovery discs and all from the Vaio and also for the Thinkpad.

ThinkPad Edge, Win 7 Sp1. For the last month I have had a problem with the control key always down. Programs react as if the control key were pressed. MS Word 7 gives an error message that the control key is down and asks if I want to go to Safe Mode. I have had the keyboard replaced with no change. The computer has been thoroughly checked, all drivers, patches, software upgrades have been made by my Tech, and the Bios has been flashed.
Last week, I found a post on Google for Win XP where the poster had the same problems. The fix was to ensure that the Sticky Keys were turned off in Ease of Access on the Control Panel. I went to Ease of Access and turned off all of the selections, and the fix seemed to work. However, yesterday the problem reoccurred. I don't know if it is a problem with the motherboard, hardware, or with Windows. It appears that this problem affects more than one version of Windows.

I have an R52 Thinkpad running XP that was "virgin" (not connected to the web) until I did some updates to get a new optical mouse installed. Below are the updates:
UltraNav driver for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad 2008-08-06
UltraNav Utility for Windows Vista, XP - ThinkPad 2008-08-06
UltraNav Wizard for Windows 2000/XP - ThinkPad R40, R50, R50p, R51, R52, R60, T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p, T60, T60p, Z60m, Z60t, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t 2006-10-18
TrackPoint Accessibility driver for Windows 98/SE/Me/NT/2000/XP/XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 - ThinkPad 2006-02-06
Also a mouse driver from Microsoft for the Wireless Optical Mouse 3000: IP32Eng6.30.191.0.exe
The optical mouse still doesn't work, but I have a new problem: I can't remove the CD from my CD/DVD drive. I push the button - no light - no open - no nothing.

I have a Thinkpad L440 with 4GB of RAM.
1. Is it OK to add 8GB (so I will have 12GB in total) or it would be better to add 4GB in order to have two similar SODIMMs?
2. Are there any known incompatibilities for specific brands? I found two SODIMMs from Kingston (part numbers KVR16S11/8 and KVR16LS11/8) and one from Crucial (part number CT102464BF160B). All are clocked at 1600MHz.

So I made a mistake. I've reinstalled the OS on computers dozens of times and never quite had this issue. I have the Lenovo SL510 and tried to reinstall using the dvd drive. I entered bios and changed boot settings so the dvd drive was first and then booted it up but it went straight into windows 7 on the hard drive. I tried again, hitting f12 at startup and specifically selected the DVD drive to boot from and again it would boot directly from the hard drive ignoreing the DVD drive completely. Finally I opened the DVD drive from windows and installed over top of the old OS, planning to delete the old files once the install finished.
The install went fine, everything worked, except I didn't have internet. Turns out that the wireless adapter wasn't being recognized. I opened device manager and it was showing up under "Other Devices" as Network Controller with a yellow exclamation mark. I then proceed to track down and install the wireless drivers after connecting with an ethernet cable. I tried the intel chipset program and it would fail to install the correct driver, I tried the lenovo support program and it failed to install the driver, I manually downloaded and installed the driver and nothing happened. I tried several different wireless drivers and the result was always the same. I was working on the issue for at least 8 hours.
Finally I decided it wasn't worth the trouble, and why not reinstall again. This time I created a bootable USB drive and went through the same process, changed boot order, no result booted from hard drive, pressed f12, selected the USB drive, same result. Finally I installed the new OS image over the existing OS from the USB while the computer was on.
Installing the OS over the older OS was definitely a mistake, but it seems like the core of the problem was that the computer just wouldn't boot from anything other than the hard drive itself I didn't realize the implications that this presented and during the final install of the OS from the USB the computer restarted during installation. Of course.. the computer did not reboot from the USB which meant it simply came up black screen, the OS had already been wiped from the hard drive, but it could not boot from the USB and therefore simply comes up blackscreen.
The first thing I tried to do was reboot into BIOS, wasn't happening. When I attempted to access bios it would simply blackscreen with the power on indefinitely. I obviously tried booting and using f12 several times to try switching back and forth from USB to DVD and so on, but everything just black screened.
So....If the computer couldn't boot from USB or DVD then the only option was to boot from inside the original OS, but doing that caused a massive driver error which I couldn't resolve no matter what I did. And now I'm thinking the computer is completely lost. The only idea I have is to try using a friends computer to install an OS on to the SL510's hard drive and then resintall the hard drive into the Laptop to see if it will boot from it. I've poured over this entire forum and found lots of similar issues but no one seems to be offering any answers or solutions besides an occasional "we're looking into it" message.

I have recently decided to upgrade my RAM from 2GB to 4GB. After installing, I booted up my computer to find that it would not recognize the new memory. After doing a bit of troubleshooting, I decided to try and update the BIOS, as the version was from 2010. I downloaded the BIOS update boot CD application from lenovo, burned a disc, and on reboot I found that the boot order did not have CD listed on it. Here's the catch: I don't have the supervisor password. This is a hand-me-down laptop, and I have tried to find the password to no avail. This is the current boot order: USB drive, Hard drive.
My question is, can I either create a BIOS update disc using a USB, or update the BIOS some other way?
I understand that it is impossible to recover the supervisor password without having it serviced (which I would rather not do, even if I have to send my RAM back to Crucial)
My system specs:
Thinkpad L512
Bios version: 1.04
Bios date: 2010-3-26
Embeded Controller Version: 1.01
Windows 7 32 bit

I originally bought an X200 and then I decided to go for the Sony Vaio Z720D/B instead. I thought I'd give a brief comparison since there are few laptops in this class: extremely portable with a full speed processor onboard. The choices for an ultra portable working laptop boils down to basically these two plus the Dell and Thinkpad X301, both of which are more expensive.
X200 pros:
- Extremely durable. I have no qualms about throwing this around.
- Locking and firm lid.
- Amazing battery life and very cheap batteries. I bought an extra 6-cell for $50, 9-cell for $60. I get realistically 7 hours out of the 9 cell, and 13 if just reading a pdf document.
- Lots of very handy keyboard shortcuts (the forward/back browser buttons are my favourite)
- Amazing track point, best I've ever used.
- Weak keyboard light helps somewhat
- Lighter than the Sony
- Spill-resistant keyboard
- Tiny AC adapter..................

I remove the power source and battery to shut it down but it doesn't shut down! Now it is running for 5 minutes, and the screen still ON, continue to refresh. How to shut this down and restart.

I just received my new E545 and booted it up. I've noticed the CPU is quite hot and so ran some software tests. It is showing the CPU temp around 92 degree C / 196 degrees F.
The chip is an AMD A10-5750M. I take it the heat isn't normal. Should I be sending this back to warranty?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 about 5 years old. It runs Windows Vista. I need to re-install the operating system as virus infection messed up the whole system. Anti virus software (Norton) cleaned it all up but Windows Update configuration still does not work properly. I purchased (because out of guarantee) Recovery disks from Lenovo about 12 months ago. I have now decided to use them to re-install the operating system. (I was resisting because of data back up issues but that is resolved now). These are proper Lenovo, paid for recovery disks. The instructions that came with the disks said to first change the BIOS options for booting to make the CD drive the 1st priority drive, which I did. However, the machine still insists on booting from the Hard Drive. I re-checked BIOS and the instruction for CD drive as priority boot is still there. Reading past posts on this forum I tried the strategy of pressing F12 when first booting up and got an option for using the CD as a temporary boot drive but apart from a different logo screen appearing, it just hung and would not take me into the recovery process.

I bought a Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN Pci-express card because my laptop didn't had a WIFI card.
Now i would like to connect the cable but I'm not exactly sure of the connection.
I read the instruction on the Lenovo site, which indicated to connect grey cable to MAIN or TR1, black cable to AUX or TR2 and white cable to R0.
But on the Intel card, it is only indicated 1, 2 or 3. I look on Intel site but didn't find the exact information.

My R51 was working perfectly and has been maintained over the 8 years it has been with me. I wanted to upgrade my RAM and downloaded the BIOS update and chipset drivers updates.
After powering down I pulled the old 256MB RAM sets from under the keyboard and bottom of machine. I then inserted the single 2GB RAM into the slot under the keyboard and reassembled it.
Black screen/ no boot
Took out the 2GB replaced the 256MB sets and it worked fine for a few hours as I searched out reasons why the 2GB would not work. 'Suddenly the screen goes black and the system shut down.
It will power up (battery light/ status light green) but screen is black and it will not boot. Fan is running and battery charges. I tried hitting F12 and F8 but nothing.
