HP/Compaq :: Windows 7 And Recovery Manager
Jul 11, 2009
I just bought a DV5se laptop and dv6t. Both have windows vista on it with the usual bloatware.(also as u know there is a system recovery partition which i wont touch)
I would like to install win7 rtm which is coming on monday.
Two reasons for doing this:
-Heard that 7 is faster than vista and
-to get rid of the bloatware.
I will do a clean install i.e Format c and install win7.
The question is when I turn on the computer(and when the hp logo comes) it says press esc for startup options. if u press esc there are a number of options like system information and system recovery. If i format c will these options be still there? specially the system recovery option.
Secondly is there any disadvantage in formating the preinstalled vista and clean installing Windows 7 RTM as vista was preinstalled by HP itself(in terms of being optimized etc, is there such a thing?)...

what of an extensive issue on a dv2710us on Vista.
One of the crippling elements of this whole situation is this computers CD drive is not working. Windows was not recognizing a CD/DVD drive present, which is what I was trying to fix. So I accessed the recovery manager by pressing F11 on bootup to have Windows install all of the original files, but not format the C drive. Well it began formatting the C drive, and a progress bar showed up so I powered down the PC before it got past 0%. When I powered it back up, I get a "Bootmgr is missing" message and am unable to get past that.
After doing some research online, I accessed the recovery manager and opened Command, and did a Bootrec /fixboot, the operation completed and upon restarting, it booted straight to the recovery manager. I was no longer able to boot to the C drive. I did a little more research and opened up Command again, and used DISKPART to make the C drive active.
This time after rebooting the cmoputer, I am once again given the Bootmgr is missing message. Not only that, I am unable to press f11 to get to recovery manager anymore.
At this point, I mainly need to access the harddrive so I can backup some improtant files, and then do a full reformat of the C drive. I have a disc of Ubuntu I had the idea of loading up to access the C drive, however since the DVD drive is not recognizing discs I am unable to use it. I also downloaded a Vista recovery disc from here and placed it a USB stick drive. Upon booting up I can press f9 to select multi boot options. When the drive is inserted the options are Laptop harddrive, and USB diskette. The USB diskette option is not present when I have the stick drive removed. I select to boot from USB diskette and the computer proceeds with a black screen as if it may boot, but then returns to the initial boot up screen (where you can use F keys to access BIOS, etc.) and then got to Bootmgr is missing.

i got my new dv5 last night and ive got a problem. The first time it happened was when i tried to make one of those back up DVD's, i open the disc recovery manager, and the computer suddenly logs off, and im reverted back to the welcome screen where i need to click my name to log back in. Every program that was running simply dissapears. I was like 'crap... i guess i cant make any back up discs'. But then it happened again when i tried to install WinRAR, it was corrupted becuase i copied the files from another computer and after i press ok in the error box it does the same thing.. 3 times i had to re-download a file i was downloading at that time. I guess it only happens when theres an error. I immediatly uninstalled norton and most of the bloatware so it cant be due to that. So now im paranoid about opening any file hoping that it wouldnt log off like that suddenly and lose my work.

The hard drive on HP G62t-350 CTO Notebook was failing. I was able to create a recovery USB in the Recovery Manager. I installed a new 120 GB SSD. The original hard drive was larger, can't remember now but 250 or 500 GB. I know the Recovering the System after the Hard Drive is Replaced (Windows 7) says "To avoid problems, install a hard drive as large or larger than the replaced hard drive," but that's a question for later.
Computer booted fine from USB (in fact, is set to boot from USB if present by default). Recovery Manager starts. I choose minimal install. It goes through the process of partitioning the SSD and copying files. Then says to remove external media and reboot, computer will reboot several times during the process, blah, blah, blah. I pull out the USB and reboot, but after POST I get "No bootable media present".
If I try to reboot leaving the USB in, it boots to USB and we're back at the beginning. I am able to confirm with a rescue disk that the SSD has one NTFS partition that has had Windows files copied to it, and a large amount of unallocated space. (Something like 60%/40%.)
How do I make the hard drive bootable, and if it were bootable, would the recovery process complete? What's going on with the partitions? Is it creating the recovery partition first, and then after boot the recovery partition installs the OS? If so, I might have to abandon this process because since I'm moving to smaller storage, I don't want to devote half of the drive to a recovery partition.

If i hit f12 after powering on to access boot options the 3rd choice is efi device windows boot manager. If i select that it boots normally and runs fine. is their a way to boot the machine without having to hit f12 every time and selecting efi device to boot to windows? i tried updating the bios as well.

I'm currently using an HP Pavilion dv5-1140 (the white/lime green special edition). It shipped with Vista Home Premium.
I've recently installed Windows 7 to have a quick look at 'what's next', planning on using HP's System Recovery partition (triggered by pressing F11 at startup) to reimage later.
I've been trying to trigger the System Recovery tool at startup (with F11), but it's no longer working properly - the computer 'thinks' for a second and then starts booting into Windows 7.
I'm afraid after using tens of Pavilions in the past two years (I'm a journo), I've got into the lazy habit of using this recovery partition to reimage, not burnt DVDs.
Is there anyway I can get the computer to load the HP Recovery tool now? I'm not looking to recover data - just reimage with Vista HP.

I bought a new MacBook Pro and am going to give my folks my 2 year old HP dv6500t. I backed up all my stuff and using the System Recovery DVDs from HP wiped out and reformatted the drive.
Unfortunately now when I try to turn on the system I get a message about there being an error in c:windowspantherunattend.xml at line 6 column 169 (I think) and it can't process the answer file.
I tried to boot into safe mode to see if I could see what is in the unattend.xml file and of course Windows Install can't run in Safe Mode.
Is there any way I can get the dv6500 to be useable again?

Now it just says "non system disk or disk error " and it seems like I lost my OS. I'd like to run windows vista on my computer but I don't have an installation disc.
The computer, in question, is a Compaq 8510. I downloaded windows vista off the internet but how to install it on my laptop.

I am having trouble getting launch manager to work on my TM8200 with WIN7 Enterprise. I have the three buttons working with the programs that I prefer, but, even though it is a small problem, I would like to program the email button to check for mail and blink when I have mail, just like it did in the 'old' days.
I know that the Launch Manager program is on the computer, because I programmed the keys, but I can't open it anymore. Double clicking on all the .exe files in Launch Manager get me nowhere.

I've just encountered error 1002 while using recovery... Recovery successfully went through reformattng my drive but crashed before reinstaling the original content. It doesn't matter if I try recovering from hard driver nor dvd rom, it all results in error 1002. I've done some searching and it seems it's quite common error in hp products without proper solution. I feel I'm out of luck as my warranty expired years ago.. How can I resolve this issue? For me it seems that recovery content orginally placed on my hard drive (and later burned on the DVD by me) had been damaged.
- to order another recovery disks set (though I saw few opinions it didn't work)
- buy new "Windows" and install a new fresh installation (will I be able to perform new installation at all?)

My case manager messed up the order on my SECOND 'replacement' notebook. She promised me upgrades across the board and messed up the order again, and forgot the screen res., fingerprint reader, extra battery, etc. So, now HP calls me and tells me that she was promoted and gave me a new case manager, Elric, who tells me there is nothing he can do and I can take it or leave it. Apparently he is one of 3 "executive" case managers and he says he is the top of the food chain.
Is there anyone else I can call to rectify this situation? Does anyone have a corporate # or something?
This has been a 6 week ordeal for me. Originally, I ordered a POS spec'd dv5t, but it came with a blown out speaker. So after hours with customer service, they gave me a case manager, Angelia, who promised me the world with upgrades and free accessories. Well, the replacement notebook she sent contained none of these upgrades. So i called her back and she said she would order a new replacement, but at that point they stopped customizing dv5t's, so she said she would order a dv7t for me. Well, she FINALLY got around to it, like 3 weeks later after having to call her constantly. We discussed the specs and I even sent her a screenshot of what I wanted so she wouldnt mess it up again. So what happens? She orders it with WXGA+ instead of WSXGA, no extra battery, no fingerprint reader, no hard drive upgrade, no tv tuner.. but she throws in a blu ray drive which i didnt even want! wow, seems like she wasnt even paying attention AGAIN. But now I cant even speak with her, as I'm sure she would some rectify this for me, as she was very cool. But this Elric guy is a complete bag.

I have a Acer 6935G which I have recently installed Windows 7 on (x64). Windows found most of the drivers, audio included. I then downloaded the Windows Vista version of Launch Manager (version 2.0.0.2), and installed - and yes, everything worked great.
That is, until I found I had an issue with my microphone in Skype. I had ALOT of audio noise coming through when using the mic... I realised this was because the gain was up too high, however to reduce the microphone gain (or boost), it was impossible with the stock Windows 7 drivers.
So? I went to Realtek's website and downloaded the newest Realtek HD Audio driver - for Windows 7. I installed this, and then low and behold, in the Audio manager, I found that the mic boost was set to +20db! I removed this boost, and my audio issues were fix! Horray... Or at least, so I thought.
Upon doing this, I realised that the new Realtek audio drivers had some how stopped Launch Manager from working correctly. The "e", web and e-mail buttons all work fine, however the touch screen audio slider, mute button, etc. do not register when I press them.
Even before installing Launch Manager, on a fresh install, the mute button would work!
So this led me to go down the route that Launch Manager, and specifically the "Cinedash" part (volume controls etc) were trying to control the wrong audio device. In my audio devices, I have two "playback devices" listed, Speakers (on Realtek High Definition Audio) and Realtek Digital Output (also on Realtek High Definition Audio).
I went ahead and disabled the latter (Realtek Digital Output), but no, nothing... the controls on the cinedash still didn't do anything!
So, i decided I'd uninstall the Realtek drivers i'd just installed. After doing that? Nothing! The cinedash audio controls STILL don't control my audio!.......
