Dell :: Can't Get Fingerprint Reader To Work

Mar 22, 2009

First off, I know the fingerprint reader is not very secure. But since I have a new XPS 1530 with a built in reader, I want to make sure I can use it because 1) it's under warranty & 2) it's cool.

I've read the readers can be quite flaky so if I decided to actually use it to log onto my computer, I want to make sure I will also always have the option to enter a password instead

Lenovo X240 Series ThinkPad :: Fingerprint Reader Does Not Work After Standby Or Lockscreen

Oct 29, 2009

I have a new X240, and the fingerprint logon no longer works after the computer resumes from standby or from a lockscreen (screen saver). I have checked other solutions here and in other sites, namely:

1. unchecking the power option of the fp reader in device manager,
2. and switching the 30-day standby in Lenovo Settings

Neither of those solutions have worked. I have the latest BIOS and FP driver versions. I made sure the the FP was enabled in BIOS, and I even switched the settings to allow internal FP reader only. Still, the FP will only work when I first power on the laptop, but not after resuming from stand-by. I have checked in Device Manager after manually entering the password, and it says that the FP is working properly.

HP/Compaq :: 8530w Fingerprint Reader Just Disappeared

Jan 12, 2009

Just the other day, I was using the fingerprint reader in my EliteBook, when it suddenly refused to log me into the pre-boot authentication; I had to use a password, instead. Now, it seems my fingerprint reader has (electrically) ceased to exist -- it doesn't appear in device manager under Windows or in lsusb under Linux, and the option to "Swipe Finger or Choose Token" at the preboot authentication screen. Does anyone know what would cause this? The first candidate I can think of is the motherboard.

In addition, my system has started behaving oddly when resuming from suspend -- most of the time, resuming from suspend results in the laptop hard-rebooting about 1/2 second later, and then loop back to the BIOS logo a couple of times before going on and booting.

My question: do I just have to send it in for repair, or is there something else I can do?

When I bought the laptop customized, HP did not offer the option for a webcam; ideally, I'd really like to just pay them the difference and have them add a webcam while they're taking the thing apart, anyway. Is there any way to get HP to do this? If anything, they could probably just swap the GPU with another laptop (a preconfigured one with same specs, but nvidia), so I'd have the same specs with ATI, and now a webcam.

HP/Compaq :: Dv8t- Fingerprint Reader Refuses To Install

Mar 25, 2010

I got my dv8t about a week ago, and the fingerprint reader that was pre-installed kinda worked, though it would drop out from time to time. I tried downloading an updated driver, but it flat-out refused to install. I didn't think much of it, but when I tried to do Windows Anytime Upgrade, it destroyed everything on the hard drive, including access to the recovery partition. It's just gone.

Now, I've rebuilt the system from a Win7 OEM DVD, and everything works perfectly... except the fingerprint reader. The program that is causing the problem is Validity Sensors DDK. It gets to "Please wait while Windows configures Validity Sensors DDK."

After about 10 seconds of that, the box disappears. The hard drive stops, and there is no longer any trace of the setup program in the Task Manager. I have the latyest version of Digital Persona, and it says no fingerprint reader is installed. However, Validity Sensor shows up in the device manager (VFS301, 2.1.0.2) and Validity Sensors DDK shows up in Add/Remove programs. I can uninstall it (really, i think it just removes it from the list) but the "repair" option does nothing. I have tried different versions of it that I've found in various places.

SP42724
SP43934
SP44089
SP45020
SP45021
SP45995
SP47224

Of the above SP's, I have tried installing them in regular mode, Admin, Compatibility mode, XP mode, and Safe Mode. None of them will get any farther than I have described above. One time, and only one time, I got the following error message:..........

HP/Compaq :: Tx2000- After Restoration FromDiscs, Fingerprint And Memory Card Reader Not Detected

Mar 9, 2009

I have an HP Pavilion tx2000...

About a week ago I had to do a full restore from the restoration discs HP had sent me, something was causing Windows Explorer to be incredibly unstable and I couldnt even make a set of backup discs...

BUT thats not the problem, after the installation, I realized that my laptop no longer detects the built it fingerprint reader and memory card slots... I figured, ok maybe I just need to go back and manually install the drivers... So I did from the HP website and still nothing worked... So I contacted HP support and naturally they gave me the links to the exact same pages I got the drivers off of, then they had me update my BIOS... still nothing... then they had me reinstall my fingerprint reader software... Still nothing... So then they told me to just send it into them under warrenty to have it fixed, except I'm a full time student and I depend on my laptop.

HP/Compaq :: HDX-18. Trying To Figure Fan Out.

Mar 20, 2010

I've got a HDX-18, (X18-1374ca) Centrino Q9000 cpu, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 64bit. F.24 BIOS from factory. Had it for two months. I use this as a desktop replacement, no gaming, plugged in all the time. I have Power Options set to Balanced.

Out of the box the BIOS has the cooling fan set to run all the time. I had it that way for two months, the fan runs on what I'd say medium speed all day, never changes speed or anything all day even when the screens off and gone in to standby for ages....the fan still spins same speed, same sound. Its not annoying or loud. But I wonder how many years it will last (not as easy to change as a desktop cooling fan).

So in the BIOS I now turned the fan to always off. So its off when I am not at the laptop. But just browsing the net and typing this the fan goes off then comes on full blast for a minute and then off...and on and off, and so on. The trouble with that is the noise! The full speed fan is quite noisy, distracting. I am not complaining as I know it has to now run fast since it was off the cpu heated up.

The only place I can see to do anything else with the fan is Power Options in Control Panel, in Advanced power options, under Processor power management I can set the System cooling policy to Active or Passive....what ever that does, it doesn't make any differences.

I am curious what other people might have done. I am only trying to get it so the fan runs medium, quietly, when I am at the laptop and goes off when its in standby. It doesn't sleep, I have sleep disabled, just standby, HDDs still On.

I have a older DV9774ca and its fan comes on slow or medium speed and even off as I use the laptop, not full speed unless I have some intense graphics or video going. If I am only browsing the net the fan on that would even turn completely off, no spinning (I looked). Admitting it is s different cpu and laptop, thats the sort of behaviour I am looking for for this one.

I highly recommend the standalone desktop version by Upek.

The cheapest I could find was buy.com ($41.08 with 5% off coupon available everywhere).

Mine came with the 5.8.2 version of their software, but the build date of the one posted in the "Upek" thread was a bit higher, so I used that one... ((not so) New Upek Fingerprint Reader Driver)

The reader operates exactly the same way as the one in the laptop (duh? same brand and same software).

If you have encrypted files from your laptop, you can open them on your desktop and vice versa...

Dell :: Fingerprint Reader During Boot

Apr 30, 2009

i have been trying to figure this out for a week with no luck and even no luck through dell.

I have a new latitude e6400, i originally set my fingerprint, then decided to clean install vista 64 bit, after tons of problems, i then abandoned the effort. Went back to the original vista business 32 bit, however, everytime i turn on my computer, during pre-boot it asks me to scan my finger to get access to my computer, i just want to disable it, but it will not let me, i went into security setting in dell control point, and in that funky embassy software, i cannot find a way to disable the finger print reader, i dont want to uninstall just disable, any insights?

Dell :: How To Turn Off Fingerprint Reader

Jun 25, 2009

I got an E4300 through work and set up the fingerprint reader at the request of my IT department, but I hate this stupid thing. It never works and I always have to manually override it.

I asked them to take it off, but it's "firm policy" for our laptops to have the reader turned on.

Anyone know how to turn it off? It's controlled through Dell ControlPoint and maybe a proprietary program we have.

I eventually installed the drivers from the 86 folder. Just wondering if this is correct? The call centre said I should not be presented with these folder options.

Dell :: Different Fingerprint Reader In E6400 And E6500

Nov 9, 2008

When I ordered my E6400, it said on the Dell configuration pages that it would have a UPEK fingerprint reader. I am quite sure I got another fingerprint reader since it says "Broadcom USH CV w/Fingerprint Swipe Sensor" in Device Manager. When I look closely at the quotes I got from the Dell sales guy it doesn't say UPEK anywhere on the E6400 quote but it does say UPEK on the E6500 quote.

Does the E6500 have the same (non-UPEK) fingerprint reader?

Is it possible to get the E6400 with a UPEK fingerprint reader?

I would like to have a laptop with the UPEK fingerprint reader since I ordered a Dell USB UPEK fingerprint reader with my laptop that I intend to use when the computer is in the docking station. The USB UPEK fingerprint reader doesn't work with the fingerprint software on my E6400. I am not 100% sure it will work even if I would have the same brand of fingerprint reader in the laptop but I think it should increase the chance a lot.

Is this what I need to use for using the fingerprint or password for logging on my computer? What all are you people doing with yours?

My old xp laptop had a password for windows log on but that was much simpler to set.
