Sony :: Reverse Engineering Repair CD's

Apr 22, 2010

if anyone has ever put any effort into removing all the crapware from the repair DVD's, to attempt to make their own fresh start?

I have started investigating the DVD's, but it would be quicker if someone had already attempted this and has information.

Dell :: M1730 8800 Engineering Troubles

Oct 16, 2007

Just got off the phone with a tech guy at DELL XPS, I was asking about the upgrade path, and the 8800M cards, and timescales for release.

The guy says they have an engineering problem at the moment, and are "Unable to make the cards function correctly with the CPU" (for what reason I didnt ask) He did mention "proportional speeds" - so im assuming he means something about bus speeds but im not sure..and that "They have no immediate plans to release this card in this laptop".

He might well be feeding me rubbish just to try and get a sale, but does anyone have any contacts at Dell that can confirm or even deny this is true?

I was hoping that they would come out with the new card in the unit before or around xmas - seems (if this is anything close to the truth) that this is unlikely from what he said...

Dell :: Engineering Sample Quadro Fx1600M

Oct 2, 2009

I purchased an FX 1600M to replace my fried 7900GS. BIOS didn't recognize it. At the beginning of the boot screen I realized that the card was "engineering sample" and I couldn't install nvidia drivers by double clicking on the setup file because no compatible card recognized. I only could install them from the device manager by updating drivers and pointing out the extracted drivers folder. I use A09 BIOS and Windows XP.

Everest and gpuz say that the card is Quadro fx1600. On every speed setup ati tool showed artifacts, even with downclock!

However the card managed both 3dmark 05 and 06. Actually with good marks.

The card had 2 heatpipes but since my case needed modification I decided to change heatpipes with my old GF7900 gs. With 1 heatpipe I installed it in my Dell E1705. Can it be a heat problem that atitool showed artifacts? I also use i8kfan to check heat run and while gaming temperature went up to 84 degrees. Idle temperature was 60 degrees (corrected with gpuz). I will modify my case soon and install it with 2 heatpipes again.

Does anybody know about "engineering sample" gpu's?

Apple :: OS X, Bootcamp/virtual Machines/XP/7 And Engineering

Jun 29, 2009

question: Mac or PC?

The only catch is this: in the fall, I'll be entering college as a mechanical engineering freshman, which basically screams "PC, PC!" However, now, with the advent of Bootcamp, Mac has become a plausible option for me.

I've really been looking at the Dell XPS M1330 and the 2.26GHz 13" MacBook Pro. My max budget is $1200, but, if I did my basic math right, I can get both of these around $800-900, which will make my parents happy.

I'm a big fan of OS X. I dig the simplistic and intuitive feel. I also enjoy the rigidity of the new-ish aluminum enclosures, especially when compared to the laptop I'm using now. However, I am familiar with XP after having used it for most of my computing experiences since junior high and onwards. 7 also looks like a very promising operating system.

I hear that Windows on a Mac machine runs pretty smoothly. However, the glitches I've read about do worry me: missing/lacking mouse drivers and lack of power management (also related to overheating ). VMWare and Parallels are also viable options, but I feel like it'd make more sense for me to run engineering applications natively on Windows.....

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: ThinkPad T440 - Reverse FN Key

Feb 1, 2014

I recently purchased a Thinkpad T440.

As a finance person I need to use the F1, F2, ....., F12 keys on a regular basis. My issue is that I need to always use FN+F1, FN+F2, ....., FN+F12 to work, which is not the most convenient thing to do.

Is there any way to switch these two? Going in the BIOS offers me only the opportunity to switch between Ctrl and Fn.

HP Pavilion G6-2224CA :: Function Keys Working In Reverse

Jul 25, 2010

The function keys on my keyboards are working in the opposite manner. Whenever I press any of the keys from F1 to F12 they perform the multimedia actions or their enhanced action. For example, if I press the F2 key the brightness of my laptop screen would lower. It should not work like this. I should be pressing Fn+F2 for the brightness of my screen to lower. The problem here is that I can't use Alt+F4 to close windows because its reversed, I instead have to press Alf+Fn+F4.

I have already search for an answer online and I can only find that NumLock is supposed to be locked. But, it's a laptop - I have no such key.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: IdeaPad P400 - Reverse Function (Fn) Keys

Feb 24, 2013

I recently purchased an Ideapad P400, and I have noticed that the default for  the keys where  F1 and F2, etc. usually are, are now the mute and volume buttons.  To access the F1, F2....F12 keys, you now have to press Fn + your desired F key.

While I understand many people probably find this useful, I play several games where these keys are essential, and it makes playing the games nearly impossible to play if you have to hold down the Fn key in addition to the desired F key.  So my question is, is it possible to reverse the Function keys?  I would much rather press Fn + F1 to mute than have to press press Fn + F1 to access F1.

Dell :: Repair Depot

Dec 14, 2008

I sent my Inspiron 1525 in to get the screen replaced because it was loose, the bottom replaced because screws would fall out, and something done about the over heating. Too many problems for only having the lappy for almost exactly 9 months.

I received a box about a month ago from Dell to send in my worn out laptop and kept pushing it off and pushing it off needing my laptop for various things. A few days ago though I got a new box and sent my laptop off to the Repair Depot.

The only problem is that the person who took my information for the box didn't give me a tracking number. So I have to wait two days! ((by which time the laptop could probably be back in my possession)) for Dell people to contact their repair depot and find out about the where abouts of my laptop.

I'm not entirely worried about the entire thing because I did remove my hard drive and I would be more than happy to just build another one and swap out hard drives.

Dell :: Inspiron 8500 Repair

Feb 9, 2010

With all software issues decided as not the problem, I am trying to decide what piece of hardware needs replacing or is even fixable.

The Dell when first turned on looks like a tetris screen, lots of vertical lines and some horizontal, lots of colors. Next boot up will be more lines not as distinct and a white background. This second screen will stay with me through several more power offs, power on.

sometimes I will end up with the BSOD stop code which supposedly is a memory problem but the memory checks okay. Finally when the laptop is really warmed up, it boots normally and will work for the entire day. I removed the bezel and keyboard but have no idea of what is "normal"

If a cable had been evidently loose or cracked, that would have helped but all I see is a sys board which appears to have a slight film on it (normal?) The display cable is wrapped with electrical tape where it goes into the display unit. Is this normal? If anyone has had their 8500 apart and took photos, I'd appreciate access to them.

Dell :: On Site Repair Time

Oct 1, 2008

Well my XPS M1330 finally succumbed to the nvidia gpu flaw. I called Dell on Sunday afternoon (it's now Weds AM) and within 20 minutes with tech support had arranged for on site repair.

Well Monday came and went, no call from the local tech to schedule my repair. Contacted Dell chat support yesterday (Tues) morning and within 10 minutes after checking on my status the rep said I should receive a call by end of business day. The rep then connected me to a supervisor for a quick survey...supervisor asked me some small talk questions and then gave me a # to call direct regarding my in home repair (800-654-1853). So now this morning, no call so I gave the # a jingle...it is some company named "Bangtech"? Gave them my Dell Dispatch # and the lady there told me they haven't received the replacement part yet (new mobo). I explained today is now the 3rd day, she put me on hold, then came back and said they anticipate delivery today and I would receive a call by 5pm today to schedule.

My question is is this normal timing? My Dell dispatch says "NBD". I figured it would be Tues for the repair since I called Sunday afternoon and nothing would probably get shipped/updated until Monday. At this point it's going to be Thursday at the earliest.

I'm sure Dell will charge me a ridiculous amount of money to fix it, so I was going to have a computer savvy friend do it for me. Does anyone know what the part(s) I need is called and where I can find it. Also any directions to fix it would help so I can tell my friend exactly what to do

Dell :: E6500 Paint Repair, Can It Be Done?

Mar 24, 2009

So after only 3 months, the paint has chipped off one corner of my e6500, leaving a freckle-sized spot of bare silver metal exposed. I'm not sure how it happened, since I didn't bang or scuff that corner, but it happened... anyhow, I'd like to fix it, if possible.

I tried coloring the spot in with a black Sharpie, but the ink just kept rubbing off.

I'm thinking perhaps black touch-up paint for a car might do the trick, but I've never used touch-up paint on anything before so I don't know A.

Acer :: Broken LCD Send To For Repair Or DIY

Sep 29, 2009

I have a 4 month old Acer Aspire 6920G laptop with a cracked LCD. It happened just by catching the corner of it (the plastic surround, not the lcd) with the back of my hand (it was just a tap for god's sake!) as I went to plug in a memory stick. Brilliant. I guess the screen was weakened for some reason.

Anyway, I know the screen isn't covered by the warranty so I was wondering how much Acer charge to replace the screen? I've looked around and can get a new replacement screen for about £95 and fit it myself but I assume that will void the rest of my warranty? I'm happy to go the DIY route if a screen is far more expensive from Acer.

HP/Compaq :: HP Wants To Charge For Repair Under Warranty

Jan 26, 2009

I have a DV9220US that was purchased last August. Didn't take too long for me to see this notebook runs quite hot. So first the CPU fan starts to make a lot of noise, although still blowing the same amount of air. Then a week later the video goes bonkers in Windows, then within a few hours the notebook will not display any video at all. I call HP, and after 2 calls talking to their not so wonderful or English speaking technical support I get this RMA'd. I have a 2 year extended warranty on this as well. So they get it in and I wait, I am then informed there is a delay in the motherboard.

Well today, I checked the status page, and now it says there will be a service charge of $764! I immediately call them to ask this is, and am told this ia due to spill damage. The one thing NOT covered by the warranty, but happens to be the one thing that did NOT do this. I immediately recognized what was happening was simply the machine had overheated and damaged the GPU. My last HP notebook I had the LCD cut off switch die, and ended up having to send it in twice as the first time they sent it back without doing a thing to fix it.

Considering this notebook did not even last 6 months is just plain ridiculous. Then to ask for $764 to replace the motherboard? I might add that I also work as a HP reseller, and only paid $900 for the notebook + 2yr warranty. Well, it looks like HP will be losing me as a customer, and quite possibly a reseller with this customer service. I can only imagine with the bad economy and slowed sales they have instituted a policy to look for any reason, legitimate or not, to push the costs of repairs and service back on to the customer.
