View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been given an Acer 6930G by a family member to setup. After realising there's 0 discs included with the laptop, the Acer pop up message tells me I have to make my own factory default image. I have successfully made it on 2 DVDs, my question is now in the manual there is nothing about how to use it, I was wondering if anyone can share any insight to me as to how it works.
Basically I know it is probably a bootable DVD as the root of the DVD suggests (several "BOOT" files) I was wondering how it actually looks like? I haven't tested it yet as the user was extremely desperate to get it running so I had to give it up the moment the DVDs were made.
If I put the DVD in and select to boot from it at start up (before getting into windows) does it take me to some sort of custom screen where I can SELECT that I want to reformat and restore the laptop? I want to know what options I am given and I can only assume that it's the same for most laptops.
And I can only assume again, that if I factory restore it, it will come back with Vista activated and all the initial bloatware again, along with all the drivers for it (so I don't need to go track them down).
This is all I need to know, I wish I can test it but I can't even get the laptop back now (until it breaks ...)
If someone can post their experiences with it I will be grateful, this is just more for reassurance than anything, and confirm my assumptions? Many thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have discovered that I can launch that recovery app by pushing ALT+F10, I have managed to wrangle the laptop temporarily to test and have discovered that I can choose from 2 back up options, but I dare not go any further, can someone tell me the next steps? One says factory default, and the other is user's backup.
I can guess that if I choose the first option, factory default, it'll ask for the DVDs I have created? And the 2nd option will restore a backup I made selecting the user option on the recovery app.
macbook is great but i got a few questions. how do i log out/ make a new username?
all my pages are like half sized, how do i make it so the page takes up the whole screen?
I have firefox for my browsing needs, MS Office for Mac 2008 for my office software, iTunes and Quicktime as my media player (they will play everything won't they?), and now i'm looking for a replacement for paint.net.
I don't need all the features of photoshop, although I gather many many mac users just opt for pirating it
Gimp isn't properly "native" and I hate the gimp tbf. Gimpshop is the same. Seahorse hasn't been updated for 2 years.......
I'm at a loss. What do I do for a paint.net equivilent on a mac? What if I buy photoshop elements? Is that just for photo's, or can I make avatars on it too etc...?
How do you cope? What do you use? Do you just pirate photoshop?
What is the best free image editor. Something equivalent to Paint on Windows. I am very surprised OS X doesn't come with a basic image editor because it comes with almost everything else. If it does come with an image point me in the right direction because I can't seem to find it.

I never got around to installing the Windows 7 beta image, but now I have no idea where I saved it on my MacBook Pro. I definitely did download it. What were the names for the 64-bit downloader (I forget if there was a downloader or how I downloaded it, it was official from Microsoft's site, though) and the 64-bit Windows 7 image? It'd be good to clear up a few GBs from my HD.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI use RightZoom and have it set to load on startup. I've noticed that Office 2008 in particular -- whether it be Entourage or Word (or any other piece of the suite) -- tends to not care what the last used window size and position was. Every time I open the program, the window appears large, but in the middle of the display -- not "maximized" in the sense that its top border is even with the bar, and its bottom border is more or less even with the bottom of the screen. Entourage refuses to properly full-zoom at all, even if I'm clicking away at the zoom button. how to change that behavior?
View 6 Replies View RelatedBack in my Windows days and for my servers at work (just a few), I always did the following to do backup:
1) DATA
Use SyncToy or copy the data folders (My Documents, etc.) to an external hard drive
2) OS and APPLICATIONS
Create an image using Acronis's TrueImage, so I don't have to re-install the applications or re-configure the OS
With Time Machine, I know it backups my User folder (Documents, Music, etc.), but does it also backup the computer settings, such that in the case of re-install, I just pop-in the original OSX Installation CD and restore from Time Machine without reconfiguring the OS AND re-installing the application again?
I noticed in the Time Machine hard drive there is also an Applications folder that contains the list of the same applications as installed in my MBP.
If I make an image of my hdd from my white macbook with disk utility onto a hard drive I take out of a unibody macbook pro will it work and boot properly?
I will do this by taking the 250gb hdd out of the unibody macbook pro and putting it into a sata external usb hdd enclosure, then making an image of my current 120gb white macbook and writing the image onto the 250gb. After, I plan to put the 250gb hdd back into the macbook pro and boot it up normally as if everything from my white macbook was just copied onto the macbook pro.
will there ever be a new dell gaming xps laptop "not alien ware" like a m1830 with 9800m gtx sli and quad core processor? Also will the m1530 ever be updated to support better graphics like 9800m gts

The disk i used to burn the Dell OS Recovery CD onto has been damaged and I can't burn a new one. Why is this? Is there a way around this or do I need to call Dell for a new recovery cd?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThese are terrific little computers, with the brilliant LED screen, small size and light weight, DVD/CD recorder/player, 54mm slot for the Mogomouse,
slots for SD and Memory Stick, and a true five hour battery life. It is almost powerful enough to do mild graphics such as Google Sketchup, Irfanview, etc.
We have installed XP and removed everything unnecessary - hopefully without losing something important. Memory is max'd at 1.5GB. The processor is a U1500 single-core, at 1.33GHz
It is known that due to marketing strategies Sony decided to limit the maximum memory supported by Z690 (aka Z3) down to 6GB, despite the fact that there are reports about Z1, Z2 and Z4 installed 8GB successfully without a problem.
The working way is the stupid (and possibly risky) way:
1. Important: Clear all passwords in BIOS! (including main, user and HDD passwords) otherwise you may have to flash back to your current version to access BIOS settings.....
i have this hp pavilion dv2120us notebook that gives me no image at all when ever i try to power it on, the leds of the keyboard light up but non of them blink neither does it make a beep sound, the harddrive activity led doesesnt blink, but the dvd drive and the cpu fan do start normaly, i tried cheking the ram modules and still the same,
View 7 Replies View RelatedI seem to be the only one here with constant probs with my 6400 so after speaking to DELL today, im returning my laptop for a new one.
What I want to know is should I swap out my nVidia GPU for the Intel? I think thats whats causing my therma/fan issues and maybe overheating the system as well (being that I use two external monitors with a dock).
I just got a new XPS 1530 with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I'm told, before I do anything, I should make a Recovery Disk. How do you do that?
I think the recovery disk is used in case everything crashes.
It's different from a Boot disk (which isn't needed anymore, since you can use the OS installation disk to start Vista if needed).
Also, I'm not talking about System Restore, which reloads your system from a time before your last SW install.
Studio, Studio XPS, Latitude, Precision - they all have DPC lag from threads I have read on here.
Should I just stay away from dell if I want to run cubase or audio software?
I ordered my 9400 with an ATI X1400 and now that I see from reading this forum that it is considered a pretty lame GPU I was wondering:
Since I don't play games on my laptop (except Civ4, which runs fine) should I even care that my GPU sucks. Is there anything other than gaming that the GPU does that would make me consider upgrading. I have a 2GHz CPU and 2 gigs of ram and I'm really quite impressed with my first laptop. I'm just one of those idiots who gets jealous when he notices that his "toy" has an inferior component in it.
I just purchased Sony Laptop VGN-SZ750N, now i want to make recovery dvd set in case i need to upgrade HD, but i do not know how to do it, or i do not know if is possible. i only find in the control panel how to do back up, but recovery dvd like other sony laptop.

A friend of mine is considering an HP DV6t laptop. He needs to know if he should spend the $19 for the OS disk or not. Can he make his own system restore disk when he gets the laptop? Is there a difference between the disk they provide or the one you mak in the backup (if available)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spent two plus days searching thread after thread and I am not getting anywhere! If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I just got my 1645 yesterday and what I want to do is to remove the hard drive and put it into my desktop and create an image. I will be formatting the drive removing all three partitions and install another OS. Later on down the road I want to be able to reimage my drive with the original backup. I do not want to clone the drive as I will be using it... I have tried Drive Image and it successfully makes a backup image and when I use it to image another drive the 'OS' & 'Recovery' partitions are fine, and the computer even boots into Windows. But when I use F8 to access the repair console I get a '0xc000000e' error. All of the information I find is somewhat outdated and refers to the period when Dell used Mediadirect.

Problem: I was using my typing a word document when all of the sudden a pattern of yellow distortion came accross the screen and windows frooze. I tried rebooting windows but even the splash screen that came up right after you turn the computer on is distorted, during startup every image is distorted somehow including the windows splash screen and all shown dos screens(random characters all over the place in dos). It won't boot into windows normally, it gives a blue error screen and then restarts but it will go into safemode (with distortion of course). I tried plugging into two different crt monitors to see if it was a problem with the monitor but they displayed "Signal out of range." I plugged into an LCD monitor and it would display the image but still showed a "Signal out of range." box bouncing around even though it was showing windows in safe mode (still distorted.) I have never seen this problem before. I booted from an xp cd and did a fixboot comand but it still won't boot into windows normal. I uninstalled the video drivers in safemode which would then allow me to boot into windows but I still had the distortion. I reflashed the mobo bios. (nothing changed) Reinstalling the drivers would cause it to crash and then not allow me to boot into anything but safemode unless I uninstalled the drivers. The problem went away completely for about a day and I was able to install the drivers again and everything was working fine but later it happened again. I noticed that while the computer is having the problem hibernation is impossible (doesn't show the option anywhere). I tried replacing the video card (most obvious culprit at this point) and that didn't even work! I'm thinking it needs a new motherboard entirely.
