HP/Compaq :: HP DV6tCan You Make An OS Backup
Dec 28, 2009
A friend of mine is considering an HP DV6t laptop. He needs to know if he should spend the $19 for the OS disk or not. Can he make his own system restore disk when he gets the laptop? Is there a difference between the disk they provide or the one you mak in the backup (if available)?

I have been given an Acer 6930G by a family member to setup. After realising there's 0 discs included with the laptop, the Acer pop up message tells me I have to make my own factory default image. I have successfully made it on 2 DVDs, my question is now in the manual there is nothing about how to use it, I was wondering if anyone can share any insight to me as to how it works.
Basically I know it is probably a bootable DVD as the root of the DVD suggests (several "BOOT" files) I was wondering how it actually looks like? I haven't tested it yet as the user was extremely desperate to get it running so I had to give it up the moment the DVDs were made.
If I put the DVD in and select to boot from it at start up (before getting into windows) does it take me to some sort of custom screen where I can SELECT that I want to reformat and restore the laptop? I want to know what options I am given and I can only assume that it's the same for most laptops.
And I can only assume again, that if I factory restore it, it will come back with Vista activated and all the initial bloatware again, along with all the drivers for it (so I don't need to go track them down).
This is all I need to know, I wish I can test it but I can't even get the laptop back now (until it breaks ...)
If someone can post their experiences with it I will be grateful, this is just more for reassurance than anything, and confirm my assumptions? Many thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have discovered that I can launch that recovery app by pushing ALT+F10, I have managed to wrangle the laptop temporarily to test and have discovered that I can choose from 2 back up options, but I dare not go any further, can someone tell me the next steps? One says factory default, and the other is user's backup.
I can guess that if I choose the first option, factory default, it'll ask for the DVDs I have created? And the 2nd option will restore a backup I made selecting the user option on the recovery app.

differences are between the two.
Does the factory default., only back up the files that were originally on the drive when I first bought it, regardless of what I install afterwards? and the Custom backsup everything? I noticed that Factory Default is 10GB, but the Custom is 29GB. This is confusing because I only install two small programs on top the Factory Default. WHat is the other 19GB?
I have a Aspire 6930G that came with 3 partitions.
After I make my backup image, so I still need the recovery partitions?

Back in my Windows days and for my servers at work (just a few), I always did the following to do backup:
1) DATA
Use SyncToy or copy the data folders (My Documents, etc.) to an external hard drive
2) OS and APPLICATIONS
Create an image using Acronis's TrueImage, so I don't have to re-install the applications or re-configure the OS
With Time Machine, I know it backups my User folder (Documents, Music, etc.), but does it also backup the computer settings, such that in the case of re-install, I just pop-in the original OSX Installation CD and restore from Time Machine without reconfiguring the OS AND re-installing the application again?
I noticed in the Time Machine hard drive there is also an Applications folder that contains the list of the same applications as installed in my MBP.

My battery died a few months ago on my nc8430. It's not an oem batter, but was a third the price. When running on the battery power, the computer is very slow. I have to have NHC on MAX Performance to watch youtube @ low res, or even type without lag. Even with this there is lag on the system. With NHC set to Max Battery, the computer is nearly unusable. Now I've been using the computer for a while, at Max Battery, and AC power, with now problems. And if i plug in the power cable, but change nothing, the system runs at normal speed.
Can a battery cause this type of behavior? Should I return it?

if anyone has had sound issues with their DV5? I have the current bios F13 and have un-installed and reinstalled sound drivers and such. What is happening is the sound will randomly make a static boom noise and then go away and then do it again.. i have checked my external speaks and have even replaced them thinking it was them.. it is not since it is happening with my onboard speakers as well. So this static boom sound is a constant annoyance along with music sounding rather off/staticy..

The Mac DVD Back-Up Guide
This is a guide on backing up DVD’s on a Mac. I myself own the old iMac 21 inch running OS X.
One day I was like hmm, what if I lose some DVD’s, how would I ever watch them again? I was like wait, I could always back them up. But then I realized, I was using a Mac and wondered if it was possible, as I had never backed up any DVD’s before and I thought all the software was mostly all for Windows (I was a Mac noob, forgive me).
Well it turns out there are some fine programs that make it easier.
Some info you should know before I start:
-Try at your own risk! I know there isn’t really that much of a risk, and I highly doubt any of this will somehow destroy your computer, but there always is that far-off slim chance.
-This was all done on the old generation iMac all in one, Intel (this is important), 1 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2400, 250GB HD, Apple OS X. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK ON SNOW LEOPARD. However, I think it should, since there really aren’t that much differences between the two operating systems. HOWEVER, since the required downloads were released and designed for OS X, I wouldn't give it a shot, but it's your choice.......

I've tried disk utility to create an image of it; it won't boot after this and once the bootcamp wizard has been run, still doesn't recognise that an os is on the partition.
Also tried Winclone; of which has to have exactly the same partition size as previous otherwise it doesn't work properly.
Can anyone suggest something like symantec ghost or osx equiv? Same for backing up osx partition; want something that I can just restore if needed. Used CCC but for some reason cannot get it to not keep all my previous files, so when restoring it also restores all deleted files too.

I want to back-up my ENTIRE MacBook Pro to an external hard-drive... (all files, pictures, songs, etc....) What's the simplest way? I'm going to install Windows XP using Boot Camp, and I have been strongly urged to backup my computer. I don't want to spend a fortune on a Mac external drive. I can buy a decent SeaGate model for cheap in my local town. Is there a SIMPLE sequence of things I can do to make this happen? I'm not really that good on computer' and stuff....

These are terrific little computers, with the brilliant LED screen, small size and light weight, DVD/CD recorder/player, 54mm slot for the Mogomouse,
slots for SD and Memory Stick, and a true five hour battery life. It is almost powerful enough to do mild graphics such as Google Sketchup, Irfanview, etc.
We have installed XP and removed everything unnecessary - hopefully without losing something important. Memory is max'd at 1.5GB. The processor is a U1500 single-core, at 1.33GHz

It is known that due to marketing strategies Sony decided to limit the maximum memory supported by Z690 (aka Z3) down to 6GB, despite the fact that there are reports about Z1, Z2 and Z4 installed 8GB successfully without a problem.
The working way is the stupid (and possibly risky) way:
1. Important: Clear all passwords in BIOS! (including main, user and HDD passwords) otherwise you may have to flash back to your current version to access BIOS settings.....

We have a server and 10 iMac workstations.
My concern is twofold
1. because these tapes are proprietary, if the drive goes down, the tape can't be read by any other machine. I had this happen a couple of years ago when the tape drive broke and because it was discontinued, I have all 5 daily tapes that could no longer be read and cost almost $100 each. Luckily I have never had to restore from a tape, but if I did, I would have been out of luck.
2. The cost. These drives are expensive. Would it not make more sense to have a couple of 16gig USB flash drives to rotate through. They are more portable and I can do a restore on any networked machine.
Or we can simply do a backup to a networked drive. I like the flash drive better than the last option because it can be moved to a safe part of the office to protect against a water pipe burst or something like that. the total data requiring backup is just under 1 gig
