Dell :: Laitude E6400: Jumping Cursor From Over Sensitive Touchpad
Mar 12, 2010
I am unable to type more than a couple of minutes without my cursor repositioning itself. The problem is inadvertent "contact" between my palm/lower thumb and the touchpad. I put contact in quotes because it's not even clear whether actual contact or mere proximity is the problem.
Brief background: I worked with Dell service and we agreed that the problem is an overly sensitive trackpad. We tried changing the TrackPad settings to no avail. They authorized a replacement trackpad which was installed by a service tech (along with a new mother board after he accidentally killed the computer while replacing the trackpad).
Result: Still no improvement.
FYI: My Touchpad settings are Touch Sensitivity 6/8; Tap to Click: On/Medium Speed; TouchCheck: Enabled/Minumum. Scroll: enabled
As you can from the above, I use the TrackPad for all my control (including selection). I have tried the most obvious solution -- turning up the TouchCheck -- and find that it renders the tap to select function useless. At this setting, it often takes 2-3 clicks to make a selection which is obviously unacceptable.

My Inspiron 1440 laptop running on Windows 7; I have always had the problem with the cursor jumping all over the place and sometimes it just deleted the whole of document by itself. So frustrated to use. I just found that it's a known problem as it happens to many of the other models. What does Dell Support have to say about this? It takes me forever to type this message as it keeps jumping around wherever the mouse pointer is.

I am having a problem with my 9 month old Dell XPS 1530. When I type for a while (a paragraph or so) the cursor will inadvertently “jump” from the end of the sentence where I am typing to somewhere in the middle of the paragraph. This is a real annoyance and at first I thought I might be hitting a key on the keyboard causing this. However, I gave the laptop to my father in law and had him use it for a short while. He experienced the same thing at least 6 times over the period of 10 minutes. I guess I’m going to have to call Dell,

My Dell Studio 1558 cursor is either jumping erratically or freezing. I have had the laptop for a few years but this problem only started a couple of weeks ago and has been getting worse.
When it freezes, I need to re-start the computer.
The jumping happens not just when I am typing, but even when using the touch pad. Â It will move up and down and often close windows or click links.
I have checked and I have the most up to date device drivers. Â I have also changed the sensitivity settings but to no avail.

I teach online and my new Dell laptop Inspiron 15 3520 is useless. I cannot use it in online chat with students because now the cursor is moving to other lines of text and inserting my typing. I uninstalled the touchpad driver as that seems to be something recommended here. I tried to reinstall from the Dell website and it failed. So now I not only have an awful computer but a useless one. I'm regretting the Dell decision after just a week.

I have a g62 laptop with an external mouse and the cursor jumps all around when I am typing . Â I installed touchfreeze and unchecked "Hide Pointer While Typing" and neither worked. Â I also reviewed a suggestion to turn off "Touchpad" or something like that, and I can't even find this in my system.

I have a brand new Thinkpad Yoga (20CD-CT01WW), running windows 8.1 64-bit, 8g RAM. Â Intel Core i7-4600U @ 2.10Ghz / 2.70Ghz
When using any program in desktop mode (first noticed it on Chrome, then Quicken, but really applies to any use), the cursor will randomly jump across the screen, usually to the upper right, and then without clicking, will close the window I'm working on, often losing my work. Sometimes I'll get random right-click menus without clicking the mouse buttons. I am using the track-point primarily, so thinking it might be inadvertent contact with the touchpad, I disabled all touch-pad functionality, but the problem persists.
I ran Norton Internet security, AdAware, and Malwarebytes to look for viruses but didn't find any problems. Just ran Lenovo update, and downloaded the most recent Ultra-Nav Driver. Â Now both touch-pad and track-point are using default settings, but the problem still persists. Â
I'm wondering if this a hardware or driver problem, or a windows 8.1 problem?

I have a Inspiron 1545 and the touchpad is so sensitive that when I am typing, if my thumb touches the pad it usually moves the curser somewhere else on the screen and I continue typing in the middle of a different sentence. Is it possible to switch off the touchpad as I use a mouse almost 100% of the time on it?

If she slides her finger on the touchpad suddenly jumps over with 2 - 3 cm or across the screen, or if she wanna click on something jumps over or just simply she cant move on a button because it's "shakes" around ... Sometimes I feel like "somebody" controls her laptop with an another mouse.Â
Â
To find out that's the windows 8 's problem or the touchpad's problem we bought a microsoft wireless mouse and it worked without any problem...Â
Â
I uninstalled the touchpad driver , tried to disable and enable but nothing worked for me....

Mouse is jumping all over the screen - I believe because it is easy to accidentally brush the touchpad while typing.
The Control Panel - Mouse on this Latitude no longer has an option to independently enable/disable the touchpad and the pointing stick - but surely there is a way to do this on this e4300.
Am running XP - 32bit.

Does anyone know how to change to sensitivity of the touchpad. It is so sensitive that one minute I am typing and the next I am somewhere else on the page. It is totally driving me nuts. There has to be a way to change it, or is there a way to simply turn it off and I will use a USB mouse.

I have had my refurbed e6400 for two now and keep experiencing a frozen mouse. I have seen this happen in XPSP3 as shipped and Vista Ultimate 64Bit.
When it freezes, the pointing stick nor trackpad response, but the keyboard continues to work. Only rebooting seems to fix this problem.
Anybody seen this before??
I have the latest drivers from Dell...should i be using Alps drivers from the mfg?

To any owners of Dell Inspiron 1525 laptops who participate on this board, are any of you experiencing any unusual problems with your computer's touchpads and also are you experiencing erratic cursor movements on your computers whether your computers are operating off of battery power or on A.C. power? If you are or have in the past and you contacted Dell about it were your issues resolved to your satisfaction and what did Dell do to resolve those issues? I'm considering purchasing an Inspiron 1525 to replace a 2 year old damaged Inspiron 1300 but I'd like to get some feedback from posters on this board who happen to own an Inspiron 1525.

I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC; can't seem to find the model numbers or anything.
Â
My touchpad just randomly stopped working when I opened my laptop this morning. I'm using an external mouse right now but need to have access to the touchpad. I have already attempted the following:
Â
Rebooting 5 times
Trying function keys
Toggling on/off: there is not light above the touch pad, and double tapping does not facilitate any change in the light or function of the touchpad
Reinstalling touchpad driver twice
Searching mouse properties: does not list touchpad as mouse device.

We recently purchased 40 units of the Latitude 3340 model. We have noticed on most of the new laptops when using the touchpad there will be frequent pauses in the cursor movement. It really affects the movement of the pointer. This behavior happens in the Bios, Factory image and our corporate image. It does not happen when we use an external mouse. Dell has replaced the touchpad on one unit and this has not worked. I am concerned that is may be an inherent hardware issue.

The touchpad on my laptop (hp pavilion x2) is not working, the cursor is not visible. It works perfectly well when I plug in an external mouse, however when I unplug it the cursor will freeze and when I use the touchscreen it will disappear completely.

I recently purchased a new Inspiron 15 7000 (7537) with Windows 8.  I'm getting used to Windows 8, but really struggling with the integrated touchpad.  It's getting so frustrating I'm considering returning it.  The problems are hard to pin down, but in general:
-I often get the right click shortcut menu, when I'm just trying to click. Â I've even changed both the right and left hand buttons to both be "click" (and neither be shortcut menu), but I still get the shortcut menu a lot.
-Sometimes the cursor gets stuck and doesn't respond to movements. Â I've tried adjusting the touch sensitivity and disabled palm detection. Â No change.

When you lightly tap the touchpad to start moving the cursor, it makes a noise.  It's almost as if its being depressed around one mm every time you touch it.  Now, I'm not talking about intentionally pressing it down and hearing a click.Â
Â
Just lightly putting your finger on the pad. Is the feeling of it depressing slightly and making a small noise normal?

I have an Inspiron N5050 which has a couple of issues. Â First issue is the cursor will move to other parts of the screen (where the mouse is) while in the middle typing. Â The laptop is setup with both Win 7 & 8 and it happens in both Windows versions. How to correct this or should I chuck this up to typical Dell poor quality control?? Â

HP Split 13 X2 Ultrabook - Windows 8.1 (64 Bit) I have an HP Split x2 Ultrabook that I purchased a month or so ago.
I upgraded to Windows 8.1 recently. I have noticed that my touchpad freezes and my cursor no longer works, no matter how many times I click or try to revive it. If I then start using the touch screen, the cursor disappears altogether and does not come back. This happens completely randomly - sometimes every couple of hours, other times more than once an hour. It has nothing to do with how many programs I have open or how often I am using it.
I go to Device Manager to check the mouse/pointer, and it says the device is working correctly. It also says all available updates have been installed. Most of the times I have to shut my computer and wait for about 30 seconds before opening it, and then the mouse will reappear. But the problem surfaces again after sometime...I am fedup with restarting my laptop everytime.

I wish to disable the touch pad on my Inspiron 1545 with Windows 8.. I have a Logitech wireless mouse. Currently both the mouse and the touch pad operate the curser. I want to only use the mouse. In Windows 7 the default was mouse only as soon as the wireless interface was installed. This is not the case with Windows 8.
I've been told to go to the Device driver and select the touch pad under Mouse and other pointers. The touch pad is not listed. I've tried disabling the PC Mouse compatible but the disable button is inactive.

Â
It was working fine then suddenly the problem started. I tried FN + F6 but no point
Â
I tried installing this driver : [URL] .... But that didn't solve the problem
Â
I entered device manager >> view by connection type, and I found "Lenovo Pointing Device" with a yellow triangle on it. I uninstalled it and it disappeared forever............. But the problem is still there. It's as if the entire touchpad cable isn't even connected to the motherboard.................
