Dell Latitude E6540 :: BIOS Update A10 Breaks Keyboard Input
Jul 28, 2014The A10 BIOS update for the E6540, released on the 4th of July, causes severe keyboard issues on Linux. During routine typing, keys will 'stick' until any other key is pressed. The keys that stick vary and seem random: sometimes it's the space bar, sometimes alphanumerics and sometimes, worst of all, the backspace key.
This went on for a couple of weeks, I then noted that the BIOS update changelog included "Keyboard input improvement." and so rebooted back in to Windows 7 and downgraded to A08. I have had no problems since.
OS: Arch Linux, kernel 3.15.x, KDE 4.13.x
I've also had problems with the backlight coming on on its own, after the lid has been shut, but I have not been able to determine if this is a firmware issue. I do note however, that LCD backlight issues have been addressed in this BIOS update as well. My current workaround is to use the possum mode thingy (Fn + B), which turns off all sound and vision.
Dell Latitude E5430 :: Can Force BIOS Update If Laptop Battery Is Bad?
Jan 21, 2015I'm trying to update the BIOS on a latitude E5430. When I try to run the file it provides an error that states the machine needs to be plugged in and battery connected. Both are true. However the battery LED blinks orange. A new battery has been ordered but with the most cost effective shipping it could be a week or two until it arrives. Laptop runs fine when plugged in and that is the way it is used normally anyway.
On a desktop computer you wouldn't require a UPS with good battery to flash a bios, so why would you require that on a laptop if it is plugged in? I am familiar with the plugged in requirement and that makes sense, and the laptop is plugged in.
Is there a command switch such as 5430A15.exe /force or something similar to brute force the BIOS to install?

Mar 31, 2013Inspiron N4110 When I shut the lid it enters sleep mode. Until now when I would open lid and push the power button it wakes up. Now it does nothing and I have to hold power button down to force shutdown then restart.

This USB disk in other latitude E6540 works fine. I have disabled power option in the usb devices and reinstall drivers but nothing solved the problem.

Dell Latitude E6540 :: PSU Makes Strange Noises When Is Cold And Under Very Light Load
Dec 7, 2014I have 130W(model DA130PE1-00) dell orginal PSU and dell e6540.
When i plug in PSU into my notebook, then i turn it on, and after windows loads, it starting to make strange noise. after it warm up to 30 deegres of celsius, it stops making it
I have noticed that loudness of the noise is inversly proportional to load and temperature. When PSU is cold and notebook is idling - it makes the strange noise. When PSU cold and noteboot is under moderate load - it stops making it. When PSU is warm (about 30 deegres of celsius) and is idling - i need to PSU at front of my ear.
The noise seems to coming from AC connector's side (Where PSU have connector for AC cable). PSU doesn't make this noise when i put it off from notebook.
Why PSU does make such noise? Why it is inversly proportional to temperature and load ? This is dangerous to me and my notebook ?
Exactly it looks like:
1. I turn on my notebook under AC, the PSU is making "click sound" till it become warmer.
2. After that there is buzzing sound, that is not as loud as clicking (i have to put ear at front of my PSU), and the buzzing sound is inversly proportional to load of the PSU.

They shutdown randomly. In the bios event we can see "ASF2 Force Off"
They have all the latest bios version (A15). They all pass the onboard diagnostics.
Motherboard, CPU and heatsink already replaced.

When I go to Start>Shutdown
It goes through the motions as in it's shutting down.
But then it will stay on the Wallpaper image, with no Icons and it will just stay on till I hold down the power button.
I want to be able to go to Start>Shutdown
So it will shut down all by its self, so I don't have to hold down the power button!

Jan 27, 2014Took delivery of my brand new y510p yesterday and the last 24 hours have been hell.The PC is incredibly slow, much slower than my three year old XPS 15 from dell.
The laptop won't shut down/restart.. It just goes through shutdown screen then black screen with keyboard monitor fan etc still on.I have done a system recovery back to initial state and am now running windows updates as first port of call but its been stuck on 13 out of 32 update (whilst shutting down) for the past hour and half.

Oct 4, 2014I cannot turn off my acer laptop since windows 8.1 update.. whenever i do shutdown, it simply just restart after shutting down.. i dont know how to turn off my laptop.. also sleep and hibernate seems not functioning, in a couple of seconds it awakes again..
I tried the every thing about the power management to untick something about fast startup.. still no luck
And i forced to shutdown my laptop during startup but it cause me a problem.. It wont power on.. and it seems dead but when i plug the power adapter the battery is charging but no signs of powering up(no power led, just battery led) whenever i press the power button.. i tried dispersing the static electricty but no luck.. the only option that solve my problem on not powering up is to disassemble my laptop and remove cmos battery. then i assembled it back.. it shows 1 blink of power led whenever i plug in the ac adapter without the laptop battery plugin.. and then it powers up again after i press the power button.. what a relief.. but it doesnt fix my shutdown problem..
the only thing i havent tried is BIOS update.. but im having problem right now..
i tried last year to update my BIOS after that it went wrong the black "screen of death" they call.. so i sent my laptop to service center.. and it fixed!..
I tried lately to update my BIOS but it says that i have already an updated BIOS version 2.19.. i guess this is the bios version installed by service center.. how can i apply the BIOS posted on ACER website with the latest version 2.15?
If i want to turn off my laptop, i simply close the lcd monitor to remain it in sleep mode..

I've done a recovery to default factory settings and tried again......no luck

Sep 4, 2009I upgraded to BIOS A15 when it came out and since then I have had a problem that I never had before. I have now downgraded to BIOS A14 and the problem is gone.
Problem description
When rebooting or shutting down Windows XP the shutdown process hanged. I think it only occurred when the computer was docked in the docking station. I have the advanced docking station with serial port, parallel port etc.
After I upgraded to A15 I noticed that the parallel port and serial port got listed the safe remove dialog box. With A14 and before they are not listed.
Dell Latitude E6510 :: Spontaneous Shutdown And Reboot?
Sep 8, 2010I've had my E6510 for about 2 months and I am having trouble with a spontaneous shutdown and reboot. There are no errors in the shutdown and the system reboots automatically within a few seconds of shutdown. I'm also experiencing trouble with system freezes. This latter problem may be fixed by an updated bios (as mentioned in another thread), but the shutdown and reboot is about to drive me crazy.
There is no rhyme or reason for it. I had it shutdown once when I pulled out a flashdrive one time, but the other times this was not an issue. Today I was typing an email message when it simply shutdown and rebooted.
It does not seem to be getting hot, but I need to check the LCD as mentioned in another thread.
I should mention this is 64-bit with 8MB RAM, running Windows 7.

Dec 3, 2014I'm starting customising my new Latitude E5550 laptop.
After turning on Bitlocker I noticed that when I shut down the laptop, it goes to sleep. Even if I logoff first then request a shutdown it still just goes to sleep. I can request a restart which does work - it restarts, but a shutdown still makes it go to sleep. I can hold the power button to force it off. Doing that or when requesting a restart, the laptop starts back up but I find that the laptop goes into Flight mode. The Flight mode symbol is visible even before you logon.
I turned off Bitlocker, and the problem has gone away. Is there a solution for this?
Should I use the Dell DDP Encryption product instead?
Dell Latitude E6400 :: Immediate Shutdown When Large Text File Opened With Six Pictures
Mar 18, 2013My E6400 Atg has been shutting down on me at least once a day. I don't do any graphics, but I usually have a large text file open with about 6 pictures in it and I stream pandora constantly.
Usually it is when I have a pop up accessing a remote database. It hangs up then poof. Screen goes black. When I hit power it starts to open, but then hard shuts down. When I feel the vent fan it is hot. Not super hot, but hotter than I think it should be.
I have the system set for high power usage with the cpu fan set to active cooling. I have the processor set to minumum processor speed 50% max 100%.
I have 4 gb ram, T9900 processor and a SSD hardrive.
It was doing this last year, but only when I had it on a soft surface that restricted airflow. Even then it was just slowing down drastically and would resolve itself once I took off my lap or what ever soft surface it was on.

Dec 11, 2008So ive been having fan issues with e6400+E/Dock for months now.
I have the dock with a 19' monitor on top and, a 17 incher attached to the left.
For some reason, after about an hour of use or when using a multitude of programs at once, my fan would kick into high gear and proceed to drive me nuts for hours. When looking up my temps, I noticed that the fan kicked in when my NVIDIA Quadro went above 61/62 degrees (occasionally going as high as 71).
Granted, I probably should have done this simple test months ago, but I finally decided to you use my setup W/O the 17 inch monitor and completely disconnected it from my dock.
Low and behold: no fan issues.
Temps remain in the mid-50's and fan stays at a low, quiet speed.
It appears that the extra work needed to drive the additional monitor is pushing the temps up and kicking in the fan.
So I have two questions as a result:
1) Didn't DELL test this dock before marketing/advertising it to be able to handle multiple monitors (without the aid of a very noisy and distracting fan)?
2) Am I supposed to just live with this now or, is it safe to try and over-ride DELLS factory settings to get the fan to remain at a low setting (how high is 66-70 degrees for the Quadro anyways)?
Multiple monitors are critical to my business and I honestly would not have dropped 2gs+ for this system had I known the fan would be this noisy and distracting.

When you turn the system on the screen stays powered off (nothing on the screen, and no back light). The HD and WiFi lights stay on, the battery light flashes.
I've tried removing the battery and powering with just the mains adapter, I get the same problem.

I updated the bios, and rebooted like 15 times.
Dell Latitude E6530 :: Chipset Driver Update Fails
Aug 5, 2014Using Dell Clent System Update to update a Latitude E6530. All drivers are updated now except the Intel Chipset Driver. On Windows 7 64 bit. Framework version of the driver is 3.0.921.
The error message that it gives is Update package digital signature is invalid - status: Failed Error Code 7
Not sure how to remedy this.
I am trying to install this driver update hoping it will remedy a black screen with cursor when logging in. It takes about a minute to login and then the desktop finally appears. Was taking quite a bit longer to log in before I updated the other drivers and then removed McAfee to see if it was eating up system resources.
Dell Latitude D600 :: A06 BIOS Update - Battery Not Charging
Sep 10, 2003There seems to be a bug in the A06 BIOS update for the Latitude D600. The power supply that shipped with the machine is Model AA22850 for the PA-12 family. This power supply charged the battery fine when I received the computer. I updated the BIOS recently to A06 version and then started receiving a BIOS error upon boot up saying that it did not recognize the power supply. I replied to the error message and went into the BIOS setup and sure enough the battery status was not showing as charging. There green charging LED no longer was lit up and upon going into Windows and looking in the Power options in control panel the battery was not showing charging as well.
We happened to have a power supply for a Latitude D800 at the office and I plugged it in and it started charging the battery immediately. I also did not receive a BIOS error on boot either. That power supply is for the PA-10 family and has more current output. Evidently this new A06 BIOS is looking for that power supply. So....I have to get a larger power supply to have my system now charge.

Sometimes it determines the list of updates to get, but then fails to download those updates, sitting on the download screen and doing nothing.

Nov 21, 2014I purchased a refurbished Dell e6410 about a year ago. The Laptop was working find with no issues. But in mid August, I did a windows 7 update... After the update, windows restarted... But instead of booting up to windows... It went to "startup repair". It ran this several times until is said it could not repair the startup.
I ended up having to do a recovery and reload windows and re-image my HD... After doing that, I tried windows update again. Same issue. after windows update... It would just got to startup repair.
Again, I had to restore my OS and re-image my drive. I tested and checked the HD and go no errors. Ran disk check and disk check /r... But if I tried to run a windows update it would just go into startup repair and I would eventually have to just reload my os and re-image the drive.
I spoke to an agent from Dell about it... He suggested I wait a month before trying to do the windows update. Perhaps they have a bug.
So I waited two months and tried an update again, last night. This time, I would get the dell logo, with f12 option, that would go away and then "windows is loading necessary files", but then the screen would go black and dell screen came up gain, then "windows is loading necessary files". I let it do this for almost an hour. Windows never started... I had no option to get into safe mode or any other boot modes. I have a regular desk top pc that I have done windows update and it has no issues.
I am running windows 7 64bit.
Dell :: Any Way To Force Wireless To Connect To G Over B?
Feb 17, 2009I have a Dell Precision M4400 with the 1510 wireless card. I have a question regarding my wifi card.
My school's wifi only shows up as one access point in the connection manager, but if I scan for wireless signals it shows several channels. The problem I am having is it seems quite random, depending on the signal strength I am guessing, my laptop connects to one of the B channels instead of the G ones.
If I go to the Driver Properties in the Device Manager, I can force it to choose A first, but not G instead B. Does anyone know a workaround to make it choose G first instead of B/G? Also,
I hate installing any Dell software that is not necessary, specially the Dell Wifi connection software since it's 300+ MB install, but does anyone who does use it know if it would allow me to specify G over B?
