I installed windows 7 using the provided dvd on XPS 1645. Installed all the drivers followed the installation order released on dell site.
Received new 130 W adapter and also upgraded BIOS to A08. But after all this hassale and procedure my problem is still there. When ever I am playing any movie using Cyberlink the screen is freezing and all this ended up to a force shutdown.
it seems that my lovlely 1645 keeps on freezing completely in random fashion. I have not noticed any patterns as everytime it has frozen it has been while doing something different, such as surfing the web, plugging in peripherals, etc etc. So know ive HAD IT. First with the bsod's when fullscreening a flash based video online, which i attribute to the video drivers, of which i have tried installing MULTIPLE, with no solution, and happens to begin with the screen freezing, and now the stupid freezing caused by random events..
Do these issues affect anyone else? I have noticed that the random freezing started to occur after flashing to the A03 BIOS.
i have already reinstalled the OS once, and dont want to do it again....unless absolutly necessary.
I am not a computer wizzard and take all the help you can offer. Here is my problem. On my inspire 6400 the sreen went black. After this happened, I connected an auxilery monitor which worked perfect.

It freezes up on me at lease twice daily. I can't spot the problem, it has froze once when using excel, many times watching youtube videos and once using a tax software.
Everything just hangs and freezes. Can't do anything, have to hold the power button down. A few times when youtube froze, the sound stayed but in a frozen state.
What can it be?
Dell sent me some additional ram to upgrade to 8GB but that hasn't helped.
I have updated all drivers.
Please help. I'm tired of waiting on the phone and going through with Dell for hours and hours.
I have a Dell E6400 and have had it for about a year and a month. recently it has started acting up.
The computer is fine until I log into my account in Windows XP. Then Dell ControlPoint Connection Manager freezes while attempting to load. If I try to open any internet browser that freezes too.
Windows Media freezes when I try to open it. And if I try to scan my computer using AVG the whole system freezes. Can someone give me some hints on what may be the problem?
I was thinking too much memory usage or something. I opened task manager and I had 75 processes running. Would a clean install of XP solve this problem or is there another root cause?
I just bought a new Dell XPS 14 a couple weeks ago and I just started noticing that whenever I am browsing something on the internet (I use Google Chrome), it randomly freezes. I do not know if it has anything to do with me using the track pad two-finger scrolling, or if it is a software problem. It is a really nice laptop and I am upset that it keeps freezing. The freezing happens only after about 30-45 minutes of using the computer after it is asleep. Just before it freezes, everything is completely normal, no heat, no loud fan, nothing! But right when it freezes, I try to do the ctrl+alt+delete/ task manager and nothing. The whole system froze. I even tried to see if I can dim the keyboard, but it did not work. Usually I have to press and hold the power button to shut it off and then I turn it back on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHad this Studio 1558 for about a week now. It's been mostly good, except it's been freezing for no good reason every so often. I'm not getting error messages, BSODs, automatic restarts, or any of that. The screens just stop responding.
I suspected it was a bad Win7 install, so I wiped and reinstalled Win7HPx64. Still froze.
Went back to a single-monitor setup, still froze.
Tried updating to the Catalyst 10.04 drivers, still froze.
Disabled Powerplay, still froze.
Changed AV/Firewall and uninstalled a pile of crap, still froze.
Installed XP, then Ubuntu, still froze.
Odd thing? Nothing in the event viewer to indicate a crash, other than the fact that a kernel power error shows up because I force a shutdown. I've yet to find a .dmp file anywhere that would indicate an actual BSOD. Fan never spun up, CPU monitors and logs don't show any sudden spike or drop in processor activity. Think the 4570 is busted?

just recalled, I've also changed power settings so the CPU can't throttle, been monitoring all 8 cores, ran off battery and off ac, all to no effect.
happens whether i'm streaming video via hulu desktop, just browsing webpages, running virus scans, or just doing mostly nothing. ran the gamut of dell diagnostics, but nothing.
Before I start out, I will state that my computer is quite clean in terms of dust and I have applied as5 to my gpu/cpu. Temp should not be the issue here since according to ikfangui my gpu temps have never passed 80C.
Now, the problem I'm having is, it seems that any 1xx.xx driver makes my games do an occasional 2-3 second freeze at random times. My friend suggested that I uninstall my chipset, video drivers, reboot, and reinstall the stuff again. No go. I have no problems with the 97.92 drivers. The latest driver that I've had problems with is the 163.69.
I own a 7800go gtx that is at 425/1100 clockspeed, default clock is 400/1065 or something like that. So the O/C shouldn't be the issue.
I have had my refurbed e6400 for two now and keep experiencing a frozen mouse. I have seen this happen in XPSP3 as shipped and Vista Ultimate 64Bit.
When it freezes, the pointing stick nor trackpad response, but the keyboard continues to work. Only rebooting seems to fix this problem.
Anybody seen this before??
I have the latest drivers from Dell...should i be using Alps drivers from the mfg?
I bought a Dell Vostro 1500 last June and it's worked fine for the most part. However, just last week I began to run into some problems.
It will start to freeze at random intervals from the tiniest thing, usually just going to another web page.
It'll stay frozen for about 10 seconds, then go back to normal again. It seems to happen more often after I first turn it on, as it rarely freezes when I've had it on for hours on end.
I purchased a XPS 1530 2 weeks ago and my Alps touchpad mouse keeps freezing for 5 to 10 seconds.
But if I keep moving my finger around on the touchpad when the mouse/pointer freezes the mouse will continue to remain frozen, or partially move in little spurts, until I take my finger off the touch pad.
The freezing occurs maybe everything 15 minutes or so.
I have called Dell twice.
Downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the Chipset, video, Bios, and Alps touchpad.
I have read other XPS owners have had similar problems but I have never seen anyone post a fix .....
This has just started to happen when booting in normal mode. I am currently typing in Safe mode as it doesn't freeze.
In normal mode the PC may or maybe not work for a while then it will freeze, I can still move the mouse cursor but nothing can/will be selected. I had task manager running and CPU was high load but not 100% and RAM wasn't maxxed either but an svchost.exe is taking around 50% CPU when idle
I was playing a game of borderlands online and its started off running fine and then after about 20 seconds started lagging badly and then froze.
I assumed it was some kind of network connection problem considering i was playing the game fine a few days earlier. Well i forgot about it for a few days.
I just downloaded the battleswarm beta and was playing it and noticed it did the exact same thing, ran fine for about 20-30 seconds started lagging badly then just froze. I went back and tried borderlands in single player to confirm the problem and it also did the same thing.
I decided to reinstall everything and make some hardware upgrades. Fisrt of all I upgraded BIOS, DVD firmware etc. Then I installed Win7x64 (proffesional), previously I had Ultimate RTM version.
After all almost everything is working fine. System is working great except one thing - something is wrong about power management. Sleep, hibernation and poweroff option is working ok. There is problem with lid only - when it's closed external monitor is turned off (that's ok) and main LCD is black (but backlited).
Music is still playing, but also that soon is gone (I always play that from Internet). Fans are working as usual, LCD is not completely turned off, music stops, keyboard is somehow working (i.e. Fn+F10 - dvd key), but I can't do anything with computer then.
The only thing that is working then it's holding down power button to turn off computer hard.
In power options I tried to change some options about lid. On plugged in - closing lid: do nothing .....
I had a motherboard put in not long after I got it in 2007. Then the screen started going blue and saying it was dumping files. If anything is plugged into the USB ports it will not boot right and starts a constant beep. Lately it has been freezing up and the keyboard will not always work. Now when I try to turn it on nothing comes up on the screen while the bluetooth light comes on and the lights on the keyboard flash once. I have called tech numerous times and with it being out of warranty they want to charge $60 just for a phone diagnosis when it won't even do anything.

The touch pad is rarely seems to work correctly even after I have adjust the settings and it is constantly freezing up for 10-20 seconds and I have to right click several times to get it to unfreeze. Really irritating! The only way to get around this is to use a USB mouse.
For the past week my laptop (which I've been using for only 3 months), running Windows 7, has been lagging. For Example, when I try to check my email using Live Mail, I click on a new email to read and it takes 20-30 seconds before the message loads. NOW it is not booting up. I try to start the computer and it goes to a black screen & says "Windows failed to start.
A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" so I let it boot in the diagnostic mode (I think that is what it was called, the only other option other than normal mode, but did not say Safe Mode) and it just goes to the blue background but no button to log in, or any way to do anything that I can see. I haven't loaded any new programs, I'm just running Quicken and Photoshop Elements, Mozilla, & Chrome and Norton anti-virus (courtesy of our Comcast internet service). Last night we tried to defrag the hard drive but that just sat at 2% for hours with no results.
We have an Inspiron 1525 and it has been freezing quite a bit lately.

The only way is to force shut down by pressing and holding power button. And noticed that after it hanged, the laptop become hotter for no reason (the fans will start become noisy exactly after it hanged)

I was just using it for the normal internet browsing/ iTunes playing sort of thing the other day when it up and froze on me. This would happen occasionally, like once a month or so and I generally don't think much of it. However when I rebooted my computer it froze again after about 3-5 minutes after logging onto my user. I run XP still and was able to get enough time in to do a system restore to a few weeks back, but this didn't manage to fix the problem. I can boot it up and run it in Safe Mode for hours with no problems whatsoever. I ran AVG and Windows Defender and neither of them caught anything, and I'm leaning towards it not being a virus, mainly because I hadn't ventured out onto any new or foreign websites within a couple of days of this happening - its not like I was looking at some new site, I was checking my Gmail, Facebook, stocks, etc.
I was wondering if it could possibly be drivers that are causing the problem? I'm not really technically inclined enough to know where or how to look into this. I've exhausted my limited knowledge of easy fixes. I would really rather not clear my HDD and start new, that would be a severe last case scenarior. Just wondering if any folks on here might have some suggestions for me as to diagnose or fix this.
It starts to happen and the laptop has been running for several hours. It goes away after a reboot. Its mega annoying when watching a you tube video and it keeps freezing, just for a couple seconds then it goes again. Keeps doing it throughout the video. Also when opening web pages etc. Its aggrivating as heck. Anyone else had this problem. Its not the fans or anything becasue as soon as you reboot its fine again for several hours to even days.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had problems with my M4400's Alps touchpad sporadically freezing/locking up, ever since I received it a week ago. I saw the same problems in Windows XP, Vista, and in Windows 7. I did some searching around and found others also reporting problems. I was about ready to return my laptop (instead of submitting to a potential troubleshooting quagmire), but I found one suggestion that seemed worth trying.
I removed the Dell touchpad drivers (Driver Version: 7.2.101.216, Driver Date: 12/21/2008) and installed one from Toshiba's web site (Driver Version: 7.2.303.107, Driver Date: 9/19/2008). After installing the Toshiba driver, I disabled all of the touchpad "extras", including browser support, scrolling, tapping, and inertial movement. It seems to have lessened the sporadic freezing (the jury is still out on whether it improved the input lag). I have had one freezing/tracking problem since installing the Toshiba driver, but overall it seems improved over the Dell driver. I'd be very interested in knowing if it helps anyone else also having problems with their touchpad freezing up.
I have had my laptop for about a year already. Once every session (every time I turn on and shut down), my laptop randomly and unexpectedly freezes. The freezing issue last up 1 min - 2 min. Thinking it was a virus, I restored the laptop back to factory settings. The freezing continued.

Since my laptop often became hot enough. So I contacted Dell support, and they sent an onsite technician to replace my motherboard (along with the built-in 2GB Nvidia GT540M GPU, and the cooling fan. I also looked into doing a factory restore on my laptop.Once the motherboard etc was replaced I proceeded to install the latest drivers for my GPU, as well as updating the BIOS. Not only did the replaced motherboard and fan not work, but now even more games, some of them older games...
I am having serious problems with my laptop when on lin slowing down and freezing up. i have had it to a coupe pc shops and the problem is worse now than before . Is there a way i can i can wipe and reload the operating system using say left alt and f10 keys from the ghost drive like i can on my acer laptop?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEverytime I try and multitask on the internet my laptop freezes and I am forced to shut it down. Before it only happened while I was multi tasking but now it's getting a lot worser. It often freezes while I'm waiting for a YouTube video to load and now while I was in the process of posting a thread right here about this issue! I did some research online and run into two possible problems; overheating and video graphics card.It can't be overheating because my fan is working fine and I just ran a diagnostic.
As for the video graphics card, I did play around the settings last week after I installed a game called Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim. I configured by entire computer to run on high performance but now I've reverted this change and the freezing still happens. What I can tell you is that while I'm playing the game for over an hour, the laptop doesn't freeze at all. It only freezes now while I'm on the internet for at least more than 20-30 minutes or even less. I'm on Safe Mode with Networking right now as I'm typing.
