View 10 RepliesIn mac, when you say download a virus, must it be open/run before it can excute itself? does it also require the user's password before it can continue? if you did not open/run it, then the virus will not excute and lay dormant inside itself or its package (trojan). is this correct?
View 10 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I'm back to using OSX now after a long hiatus.
Have they come out with wild viruses that you can actually get infected with in OSX yet, or is there still no need for antivirus in OSX?
I bought a HP-Pivilion DV14-1551dx a month back and I haven't created recovery discs yet. After a month of usage I suspect some virus and spyware in my laptop because some of my friends browsed unprotected websites. Will the virus and spyware affect the recovery partition? Now if I create a recovery disc from the recovey partition will it be safe to use those discs or will it be affected by virus and spyware?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the Pavilion g7-2235dx with Windows 8.1 operating system. Nearly every automatic update messes up my ability to get on the internet. The only way I can connect is to uninstall all of the updates. The icons on my desktop also stopped working. When I click on them, it goes right back to desktop. Can't pin them to the taskbar either. The ones on the taskbar won't open by clicking on them either. Have to right click and tell it to open. Also problem getting my Norton anti-virus to open. Says it working but can't open it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Acer Aspire 5585WXMi was infected by a trojan horse a while ago...
I managed to clear off the trojan horse, except now my computer has several problems:
1. All my CD-ROM Drive Drivers are corrupt
2. I can't access some system files to install applications
3. My C-Drive space decreases at a phenomenal rate
I have tried to use combofix and other software to rid this laptop of the virus but I can't seem to do that. It is not recongnizing the CD/DVD ROM so I can't use the Recovery Disc. It won't let me use a command prompt. If I could get it to let me do a clean sweep maybe I can run the software on it.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have just purchased the studio xps 1640 with 6GB ram and vista 64. one of the programs that i use only works with XP professional.
can i install XP profeesional on this computer. if so i plan to partition the hard drive to do this.
I know there's 2 ways to do this but I have speed concerns....basically I want to stick a Raptor into my laptop which is 99% of the time stationed. Here are the only two ways that I know.
1) Build an external USB 2.0 by buying an external exclosure etc.
2) Hooking the raptor directly up with a power source..This I remember seeing on Tom's Hardware but I cannot find it and I don't think they explain it that well...
What I am worried about is if the External Raptor would limit its power? and What do I need to hook it directly up to my laptop with a power source(wihtout screwing with laptop voltages).
Since I have a dell, I decided to ask here. My laptop is my primary unit that I use.
But there are a few things that I would like to use my desktop for, but I do not want to take up all the space that the entire desktop unit would use. Therefore, I was wondering if it is possible to run my desktop using my laptop as the display.
So I ordered my Alienware Area-51 with a bunch of upgrades totaling at something like $5000 on January 22nd. It has been in the "In Production" stage for a while and today they sent me an email saying the delivery date was changed to February 23rd. It was initially supposed to be shipped by February 16th.
So I'm wondering if "In Production" means they have actually started building the computer, or if there is a chance they are still processing payment information. Is there any chance they haven't confirmed the payment at this point, I would consider canceling the order.
Secondly, when Dell gives you a delayed ETA, how often do they delay the system from arriving further? I'm worried that a week and a half from now I will get another email saying I won't be getting my system until March.
I want to use my desktop to install XP on a notebook drive that I will then put in an Insiron 8000 notebook. It's too long to explain why I don't just use the notebook to do this.
So, is it possible to do with the PC? I assume I have to get a special type of connecting cable, but can it power the external notebook drive and can the data transfer handle a Windows full install and, finally, from where on the PC do I connect it?
I just got my xps 13 on march 9, 2013. Today I received a battery warning.Frequently connecting and disconnecting your computer to a power source without allowing it to fully discharge may reduce the longevity of your batter. Dell's Longevity mode will protect your battery by moderating the extent to which your battery will charge protecting your battery from frequent charge and discharge states.
I enabled the Longevity Mode as well as the desktop mode. Is there any conflict with either. Should I ever click the option "Charge battery to 100% one time" under the Longevity Mode Tab.These options are new to me, and I would like to take the best care to keep my battery long lasting.I also have Dell Intelligent Display in Battery Mode and Dell Extended Battery Life enabled under the Battery Status Tab
I have an issue with DVI and my Sharp 37inch LCD. I cant get the 1730 to display the desktop to ONLY my Sharp TV. I've reloaded drivers and messed with ever setting known...even called Dell who wanted me to doa system resore!? I got the pc last week..

Now what I want to do is use another montitor with the laptop. I was thinking of getting a 17inch widescreen LCD.
Now what I'm wondering is will the laptop be able to power the LCD widescreen at 1440 x 900 as well as the laptop display at 1280x800
I have a 9300. Is it possible to hook it up to a desktop and use my keyboard and screen to operate it instead of a separate keyboard and external monitor?
View 13 Replies View RelatedFor some reason. Norton Antivirus on my MacBook Pro is saying that about every ten minutes I'm getting a "portscan attack" from the IP address of my Dell desktop. Anybody have any idea how to solve this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI power on the laptop and it immediately goes to a windows is loading files screen. After it is completed it freezes for a moment before loading the blue screen where the desktop icons would normally load. Except they don't. It freezes on the blue background screen. The warranty is up and I have valuable pictures etc.. On this computer from trips and whatnot.

Today, my SZ6 died, seems like mobo is dead.
But I urgently need a computer to work on, in a few hours. It would be really good if I could put HDD from laptop into my desktop and boot from it, but trying so did not work - BSOD and reset.
I think the problem is chipset which was Intel on my laptop and is VIA on my desktop .....
I'm having trouble connecting via Remote Desktop to my M4400 when the Embassy fingerprint software is installed.
Normally, I can log in using Remote Desktop by entering my Windows username and password in the Remote Desktop Connection client window (and this is mandatory when using Network Level Authentication).....
I have a problem with my laptop dell inspiron n5110. I can not change desktop background in Windows 7.I click compositions but it is only a black background, even as I choose different background.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have an Inspiron Windows-8 (pro) laptop, that I purchased on 3/23/13. One strange issue I've noticed, is when I'm in a Windows-8 app (i.e. Mail), I'll start to move the cursor (via the touch-pad) to perform an action (like delete), and then all of a sudden, I'm "switched" into Desktop mode. Sometimes the OS flips back and forth between the app and whatever I was on previously (usually the Desktop). Is this a
1) keyboard issue,
2) a touch-pad issue,
3) a Dell issue (defect, or driver issue), or
4) a Windows-8 issue, or
5) something I'm not aware of?
It doesn't happen all the time, but is frustrating when it does. I usually have to close the app, go back to the Windows "metro" screen, and re-launch the app.
It seems like every time I delete a file, I get a whit bar on my desk top that says Delete and the only way on getting ride of it is to restart my laptop, this white bar is on my display all the time on mater what I am doing.
This last time, I deleted the contents or my of my recycle Bin
Dell XPS 1645, Win.7 Home Prem. 64 bit...
I have been looking and saving to build a $2000 desktop and then I ran into this beast of a machine the Envy15. Now I will be using it mainly for school whihc is 3d apps, CAD, works, everything and anything I can get my hands one including playing some WoW and the new COD here or there. I mainly work at school so I figured lugging a desktop around wouldnt work.
My question to you all is this Envy really a desktop replacement? How well will it perform with that Radeon 4830 1GB card? Without factoring in my traveling to school, would it be wiser to spend the money on a desktop or the Envy?
getting a envy 15 or a desktop, I always wonder why we as people buy laptops arn't desktops better deals.

View 3 Replies View RelatedNoticed the 20" Cinema is off the website AND the configurator for the Mac Pro...looks like a cinema refresh is coming VERY soon...how can they sell a Mac Pro with no choice of monitor besides the 30"...maybe next week?
Also decided I'm going to buy a Mac Pro to accompany the macbook pro. Gonna go with the monitor I have now..or the 27 inch Dell...then adjust later if a great cinema comes out. This way with Dell I can connect MBPRO, Mac Pro, AND my XPS desktop to one good display.
My question is are the NEW cinemas going to somehow connect to the mac pro desktop?
Display port video cards?
I bought my notebook during last christmas and the specs are:
Model: Dell Studio XPS 16
HDD: Seagate 500GB 7200RPM
OS: Win 7 Professional
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
RAM: 4GB
Until last week it worked like a charm. Then, out of all the madness in the world, I chose to update the Driver of my graphics card. The installation and everything else went smooth. But later when I started to play, I noticed that there is a BLACK AREA around the window. Problem description goes something like this:
