THis is an open box deal. Im unsure if I should keep it. Works great.
Here are the details...........................
Right around black friday I ordered a Dell studio with the following specs listed below. It was $1778 with $649 off making an OTD price of $1212 shipped.
I see the I7 is out & I dont believe that was an option for the laptop either. There was also the 20% bing cashback deal which removes another 220 from the price (I dont quite get the math myself but hey).
I am looking at a Studio I7 with the same price but a 3rd year warranty vs my 2nd .....
On the new Dell studio 1745, fan goes on and off like an hair dryer:
Symptop:
The fan is completely stopped and kicks on like an hair dryer for about 10s.
This happens from 1 time every 2 minutes to 3 times per minute and occurs whith an idle processor (< 10%). This is very unusual and disturbing.
On a regular laptop, as I usually see, the fan should spin all the time silently at low speed according to low processor activity and should speed up by steps, according to the processor heavy load.
Some other users on French and German forums also noticed this issue.
Dell changed my motherboard as well as the fan but it didn't solve the problem. I guess it is due to a bad bios...?
- Did you also noticed this problem on your Dell studio laptop?
- How does it work with yours?
- any information?
I just bought a new Studio 1745 and I was wondering where I can find a remote for it...
Dell wasn't very helpful regarding the issue. I can't even see an infrared eye anywhere but there's gone to be one, right? Anyway, any advice would be appreciated...
These drivers are intended for the Studio 1745. The intended use is for a fresh installation of XP_Pro_SP3 32bit. All files are Zipped, and safe. (But always scan any files you download with a good Virus Scan program such as BitDefender, Kaspersky, and Norton)
The links should allow you to just download them without any aggravation. If you notice anything wrong with links or files, please let me know. I don't mind correcting mistakes. After all, that's when you learn.
These files and links could be updated, and replaced accordingly to updates I come across. When reinstalling XP, I recommend installing the below drivers & software in the order of the listing....
1. Eject Button - I can't get either the eject button (near F12 key), or the touch eject button (that lights up) to eject any CD's. I have to go into My Computer, and right click ...and then eject it that way. Anyone know of a way to get the eject buttons to work? Should be able to use one of the eject buttons.
Note: I did try the holding the power button if for 30 seconds, and then rebooted. This didn't work for me.
2. Brightness - what FN + ? key adjusts the brightness of the screen? When the AC cord is plugged in, it's bright. When I disconnect it, it dims. I'd like to adjust the brightness to where the screen is the same brightness when it's on either AC or Battery.
Does anyone have the same experience ..
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Studio 1555 is not passing post startup. It will pass the Dell splash screen with a lot of beeps that I cannot identify, but afterwards, will get stuck with a black screen and a flashing underscore icon at the top left corner. What are some possible problems/fixes/tests? I'm wondering if its time I bought a new laptop. What are the chances of my hard driving still being okay?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy old notebook keyboard died, and despite my apprehensions about buy a notebook with a glossy screen, I recently purchased the most recent upgrade of the Dell Studio - a 1745 (according to the number on the bottom of the laptop) from Best Buy for about $800.
While I was worried about the glossy part, it turns out there's another, much larger problem - I intended to use it to edit photos (I'm not professional, just like to play around with them sometimes) and I've found the colors, despite being a "truelife" display (I got the "900p" one, 1600x900) to be kind of crappy when it comes to viewing skin tones. They're just sort of...flattened. My pictures that look good on my regular lcd (21.3" Samsung SyncMaster 213t) and my hd tv look weird and unnatural on my studio laptop. The pictures that look borderline-ok on my other monitors look terrible on my laptop because the skin tones are all messed up.
And I don't mean that like "I'm super picky about skin tones", I mean more like "anyone looking at the picture on the laptop lcd would notice it looks noticeably weird".
Naturally, there are a picture or 2 that actually looks better on the laptop screen - in one of them, there's a yellowish cast in the background when viewed on the camera lcd and my tv (it's also a common issue with pictures taken with my camera), but it's not there on the laptop screen. Unfortunately, since I need to be able to adjust the white balance on my laptop to look good on your average monitor, this is kind of a problem for me.
I really hate to wait a month for a new computer, but I was thinking that maybe the "17.3” Full HD (1080p) B+RG LED Display with TrueLife™ and Camera" would be better with colors? Or is there something wrong with my particular screen? The Studio with the same specs costs $1,139 online (as opposed to the $780 I paid at Best Buy) so it's a lot more money, but I could probably do it. I considered ordering a refurbished Precision m6400, but some of the reviews of the screen seemed kind of down (especially for such an expensive computer), plus it sounded like it's pretty huge to lug around.
I have a Studio 1745 which refuses to boot up.The Laptop initialises and begins the BIOS Post processes and gets to about 66% through the BIOS load status bar and freezes.  I am unable to get into BIOS setup or Diagnostics either.  I have checked all connections and removed and refit the CMOS battery - no change to the problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1745 and there is an issue with the magnetic switch. The issue seems to be that the switch itself can't seem to make its mind up whether it has been activated or not. On boot the screen flickers on and off slowly, placing a magnet near the track pad (where the switch is located) increases the rate of the flickering, however it does not solve the problem. Looking inside the laptop the switch seems to be a soldered chip, is there any way to solve this completely? I've connected it to an external monitor, however the picture will only stay on the screen with the magnet in place, removing the magnet causes the picture to come away from the monitor and back to flickering on the laptop.

studio 17 fan problems
2nd description:

I've tried to collect all the info I can. Please add as you seem fit.
Recently returned a dell 1745 due to bad fan control. While idling the fan would rew up to max each 3-5 minutes easily detectable by speedfan (see the last link). The core temperatures would slowly ("") increase to around 38 degrees when the fan starts at horrendous pace for ~10-15 seconds and cool the cores to sub-30 degrees and the whole show starts again. This is a showstopper and noone should really by these products.
It is as though the cpu fan only has two paces. Silent and Noisy. There shoudl of course be some kind of gradient in the fan speeds at different temepratures but his has not been implemented though very easy for BIOS coders to do so. The fan vigorously tries to cool the cpu to 30 degrees each time it hits ~40 degress - we're talking intel cpus that could easily go to 60-70 degrees without fuzz.
While idling any laptop should keep a constant temperature - the current lineup of inspirons and studios (at least 1564, 1745, 1747 an 1749) cannot achieve this and unleashes fan hell very often.
Untill fixed (which dell seems very reluctant to) don't buy dell. It's simply not worth it.
This have nothing to do with throtteling. And don't even get me started on doing something "cpu intensive" like browing.
I just bought a Studio 1749 with a Dutch US international keyboard. The US backlit keyboard is the only backlit one and not an option here.
The only difference is the missing € symbol at key number 5, for which I don't care so much.
Now I'm trying to find the US backlit keyboard at eBay or Amazon without success. Is there a way to find one aftermarket and get it shipped to Europe?
I've been working with this laptop for over 4 years, and now i found out that this version brings the bluetooth feature..I've downloaded the driver from dell's page and tried to install it.. the problem is, the installation tells me to press the bluetooth button to enable the bluetooth and install the driver, it gives me advices by pressing "FN + F2" i do it,, but nothing happens, i press it without FN and still nothing happens.. why do i get this problem? I've installed all the needed programs successfully but this is the only one that does nothing.. what i have to do?... i want to use the bluetooth

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recent;y installed a version of windows on my Dell Laptop, Inspiron 6000. I worked for a week or two then when I turned it on a couple days ago, it won't go pass the black screen with the blinking white line. A user some where on this site on an other post that had similar problems said that  it to re-install and delete the existing partition and create another one with 120GB. I did but when creating another partition, I tried to type in the 122880 MB (122880MB = 120GB), and upon pressing ENTER, the numbers 122880 goes back to the number of MB of the partition disk space I had previously. I hope this all make sense. I do not have the money to buy another laptop. I have a Windows XP CD, but not the original. The laptop worked fine before with this version.
To fix the blinking line on the start-up black screen, all I need to do is to re-install windows XP and change the partition to 120GB. But every time I try to change the number of MB, it doesn't work but reverts back to the original number. Is there another way to fix the blinking-white-line-on-the-start-up-screen?
Also, I tried to use the repair control...doesn't work.
My simple pass is not working. I check the biometric device the software is up to date, and it gives me a code 19 fault. On my programs installed i do not see the simple pass program no longer. Â how can i get the correct software to reinstall?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with the fingerprint reader and HP simple pass identity protection software that came with my Dv6-3121nr. For some reason all of a sudden since this morning it won't work. There are no lights on the sensor and it does not respond to any swipe/movement. When I launch the Simple pass software and go to the fingerprints section, it says the finger print reader is not connected. Interestingly when I go to device manager I don't see any biometric devices listed under there. I read on another thread that some options from under biometic devices in device manager fixed the problem.

I am trying to repair a ZD7000 series laptop. The initial problem was that it had a broken AC Jack. I got a new AC jack and soldered that in. While I was at it, I also got a 3.2GHz P4 out of another laptop to replace the one that was in this laptop.
Now the laptop does not pass the boot screen. It will just display the HP splash page, then reboot. No BIOS beeps. It does this on both AC power and battery.
I have tried different ram as well, with no luck.
I'm not able to use my finger print reader/simple pass now that I've downloaded windows 8.1 Been reading some of the other questions and difficulties people are having but haven't been able to still get it to work.

What I found quite interesting in the cnet review is that their performance testing of the Dell 1569 was second place just behind the Toshiba E205-S1904 (the other Best Buy Blue Label). I do not understand why, the specs are basically the exact same specs, EXCEPT our Dell has a 500gb 7,200rpm hard drive while the Toshiba has a 500gb 5,400 rpm hard drive. I would think, if anything our performance would be slightly better than the Toshiba because of our 7,200rpm hard drive. All the other specs are the same.
So, with that being said, why did the Toshiba have slightly better performance numbers than ours, since as I keep stating all the specs are the same except we have a faster hard drive?
Does anyone have any idea why? Is this something affecting Dell globally or is it just UK/Europe in a mess?
I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;
I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,
but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....
Recently i ordered a Dell Studio XPS and like many of you with dell's,my main use was to be for audio production,dj'ing or any sort of thing pertaining to music. After ordering and then reading up online,ALOT of people are having problems getting the latency and/or pops skips & jumps out of their sound source.
Some say the problems lie within the Lan card, some say video card. And most importantly,Dell does not have an answer to the problem because they are not trained to understand audio type situations(Unfortunately).So...Here is where we are going to solve this thing(or try really hard because besides that...these are prett good laptops otherwise) Once i get mine in the next 3 days,im going to tell you what i did because i WILL fix it or at least try hard and fail.
