HP/Compaq :: 8710w OK With 800Mhz Memory
Jul 31, 2009
I know the standard for this model is the 667Mhz DDR2, but I was curious if anyone had luck with 800Mhz memory on this model? I would like to upgrade the memory, but in case I cannot find a good deal on the 667 stuff, wondering if the 800 would work (albeit likely at the slower speed).
Also, any one get a quad-core processor working on this model? I know the T9500 is an awesome processor. I'm just curious.

I bought 8710w (KE191EA) and have some questions and issues:
- CPU and HDD don't get very high, when gaming, but the GPU and mobo get up to 80C and more. I understand that to GPU this is normal, but what about the motherboard?
- while playing games (L4D, COD4 - especially L4D) my laptop constantly locks up for several seconds (still image with looping sound). This problem is not that noticeable while playing UT3, TDU and other games. I never had these problems on my old Asus S96J.
- something is wrong with the HDD, because I can't make a new partition on it. Now it has the system partition (C) and HP recovery (E). When I try to make a partition using PartitionMagic8, I get error 1517 after reboot. CHKDSK should fix this, but it doesn't. Gparted also can't do it, because it shows ! icon besides C: and I can't resize the disk. The reason I want to do this is that I would like to have XP32bit and Vista64bit dual boot (laptop came with XP preinstalled).

Also I don't want to have any over heating issues.

The HP Compaq 8710W I picked up off TigerDirect when it was $750 last week arrived today...but I've run into a couple things that don't make me all that happy.
1) extremely long post. It stays at the BIOS splash page for several seconds more than I think that it should.
2) It won't boot off the optical drive unless I physically tell it to. If I have it set to just go through the boot sequence, it won't boot off the CD.
3) As a part of 2: I've replaced the DVDDL it came with with a BluRay reader/DVDDL. Both drives exhibited the issue.
4) Although this doesn't seem to be an actual problem, it keeps showing up as muted. If I click play in Winamp, it'll start playing. I don't know if it's Win7 related or not.
5) I can't seem to find a way to turn AMT off. I'm not using it in my Thinkpad, and won't be using it here.

I've run into an issue that has stricken every single laptop, regardless of OS, that I've ran that has an intel 4965N WiFi card. Dell Latitudes, Inspirons, Acers, HPs, Lenovos, Toshibas, Gateway, Sony, XP, Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7, 32 bit, 64 bit.
Transfers of large files to my NAS, such as DVD ISOs, system images, or VMware images, will result in a failed transfer 100% of the time.
The issue does not occur with Broadcom or Atheros cards, or intel cards such as the the 2915ABG, 2200BG, 5100N, 5300N, 5350N. Just the 4965N.
I have an intel 5100N card I bought for a friend to use in a laptop, but he opted to use a Broadcom card that was supported in OSX. I'd like to use it in the HP to fix this issue, but unfortunately, HP's current whitelisting of WiFi cards prevents me from doing so. find a BIOS that will let me use my 5100N?

I have an XPS Gen 2 Laptop. I know its like ancient now but after 3 years its still running pretty well. The problem is I'm getting severe fps drops in games and I realized something strange happened to my cpu.
The cpu load is going crazy because the cpu clock speed is locked at 800mhz.
I thought it was something wrong with SpeedStep but I turned that off and nothing changed. My cpu will not go past 800mhz.
Why is my cpu downclocked and what can I do to make it normal again. Dell BIOS doesn't really let u manipulate anything.'
CPU-Z shows
Core Speed: 798 MHz
Multiplier: x 6
Bus Speed: 133 Mhz
Rated FSB: 532

you can add 8gb of 800mhz ram?
whys that when you can only use 667 on the current processors that are in there?
maybe they might actually just add centrino 2 processors to the m1530?
i wouldnt mind, and i would probably buy one, as i cant be bothered waiting for the magical studio 13/16.
i quite like the m1530 design, so i hope they now add the processors and graphics card, and im buying one

Just got my 1647 set up (replacement for my 1640) and got sent an additional 4gb dimm and popped it in for a total of 8 gigs.
CPU-Z shows 8 gigs, everything works fine..The Memory tab is blank so it doesn't show what its actually running at or its timings or dual channel mode or not...Which caused me to think it wasn't running in dual channel mode..So I got everest ultimate edition and it indeed showed it was working in dual channel so I was happy..But then I noticed it reported the memory was running at 100mhz and in ddr3 terms that effectively is 800mhz...The ram should be running at a base clock of 133mhz or 1066mhz effectively. All the tabs report it as being rated at 1066 and all that registers fine..Its just the "actual clock" reports it at 100mhz instead of 133..
I thought back to the 4gb dimm I recieved..It was refurbished which made me think it was the culprit..So I did some tests. I tested each dimm individually and each time (alone and together) everest reported 100mhz (800mhz)..
So is everest to be trusted? Are both my dimms bad? Whats causing my dimms to run at 800mhz instead of 1066? There is nothing in bios to tweak so how can I change this? And let me repeat, both dimms, when installed BY THEMSELVES (so 4gb total) still report 100mhz...so it cant be the refurb dimm...
What gives?
My window index score on memory is 6.8..which is about what it was on my last machine which used the same speed ram..
Could everest be wrong?

I have a Studio 1555
I have a core 2 duo processor with 2.4ghz each core.
But for some reason speedstep works correctly and then randomly out of the blue it will throttle down to around 800Mhz and just STAY there, no matter what settings I've put, no matter if it's plugged in or not and no matter if I NEED more power.

I found a nice deal over Dell.com for this memory - yes, I know it's crazy but that was the cheapest place I found, they offered 15% off + FREE Next Business Day @ DHL, which sounds pretty good for me.
I'm going from 2x1GB DDR2 533Mhz to a 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 800Mhz@667Mhz with lifetime warranty for as low as $44 each module. I think will be great upgrade since my 2GB always wasn't enough!

My current RAM is:
1gb Corsair DDR2 667mhz (default from manufacturer) and
2gb Mushkin DDR2 800mhz
I searched through the internet that Acer 5920G can only support up to 667mhz.
The problem is, I'm planning to add 1gb more RAM, so it will be 2 x 2gb Mushkin 800mhz, since both of them will be downclocked to 667, will both of them still run in dual channel mode ?
I wanted to buy 667mhz one, buy every shop near my place says that 667mhz ram not distributed anymore and the price is quite the same.

I have Acer Travelmate 7520G (Turion TL-58) and upgraded from 2G of 667Mhz RAM to 4G of 800Mhz, however the memory is still running at 667Mhz and FSB:RAM being CPU/6. Chipset here is Ati RS690 and according to Everest it supports 800Mhz DDR2. There is no option in bios to change the RAM frequency or divider.. I have tried updating the bios with no luck.

i bought my wife a netbook, as she specifically requested, thing is, on 3cell 3hrs are great, but it has begun to "tear" a lot in WINXP.....
background services...etc have been seen to
so i check out CPUID and lavalys.....both showing Proc working along at 800mhz....i have tried to change power profile in XP ..... and tried making a new one, but there is no way to reduce that tearing effect...... it feels a bit sluggish to me, i am going to add a 2G module (accepts Elipda 2G module from my HP DV5T) so some RAM along those lines is wha i am aiming for......
how to stop/ allow the laptop to clock on OS load....cuz the 800mhz on the netbook is unacceptable.

I have a dell studio 1735, I changed my first boot disk, to an ocz Agility 3 and put windows 7 64 bits on it.
I changed the two slots of memories to an no name (compatible dell products) 4gb X 2 running at 800mhz eaches.
Put the first time I started my computer, it said it have to format the new memories before it would start windows, I accept, then these problems appears...
1- The memory was formated to 667mhz (the totality of gb still there: 8128mb of memory)
2-Many lags came (from video (streaming and on disk) and from a repeat task over a hard disk (I got two disks the other be an hybrid hdd/ssd) giving an error and closing the explorator of windows)
So I want to know if possible to reformat the memory sticks to/or put them to their native configuration of 800mhz....

A friend just showed me his new Dell Vostro lappy. He has 4 GB of DDR2 800mhz memory on it when compared to my 4 GB of DDR2 667mhz memory on my XPS 1530
However, under his windows experience score - he gets 5.9 score for memory operations while I just get a 5.1. I can't believe that a couple of hundred mhz can result in such a drastic difference.
Is there something optimized for his system but not for mine?

I just purchased a used Elitebook 8540w with i7 quad core and four memory slots (I love it!). It is running 64 bit Windows 7 Professional It came with one 4gb memory module and I purchased an additional 4gb module to bring total RAM to 8gb.
I have the HP document that shows for two 4gb memory modules, one should be in memory slot 1 and the other in memory slot 3 for correct functioning of dual channel memory. All set right?
Not quite. In the Elitebook 8540w, the primary memory slots under the keyboard are clearly labeled "1" and "2" However, the expansion memory slots on the underside of the chassis are also clearly labeled "1" and "2" Opps! There is no "3" and there is no "4" In which of the unfilled three slots do I install the second 4gb module for correct functioning of dual channel memory?

Trying to upgrade the 512mb memory from my father-in-law's HP ZE5615CA laptop as it is dreadfully slow.
However, I can't seem to find memory anywhere. I tried installing this which worked on my old Dell C640 (which also was said to only take 512mb per slot, but not true) as online it appeared the Ze5615 also used PC2100 RAM ...
[url]
However, the laptop didn't recognize it at all.
It appears that the current memory in the slots are 2 256mb Samsung PC2700 DDR2's. This was a shock given that everywhere I've searched has said this laptop uses PC2100.

My girlfriend has a dv2225nr that I'm refreshing for her. Currently she has 1GB of RAM and I'd like to go to at LEAST 2GB, and preferably 4. Will this sytem accept 4GB of RAM? If not, is it a BIOS limitation?
HP swears it'll only take a max of 1GB of RAM, but I've seen many reports of people using 2GB successfully with it.

I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Does the HP HDX 16t running the Nvidia Geforce GT 130M with 1GB ram run on Gddr2 or Gddr3?
Note that all of the older cards (the 9600m GT) sadly ran on Gddr2.) I just wonder if this newer card has the faster ram.

I also have a HP DV800 and i want to upgrade the memory.Currently it has 512 mb, but i'm not pretty sure what is the maximum that i can upgrade.
Is it 1GB or 2GB?
I ask this because one time somebody told me that there are 2 versions (or something like that) of this laptop. One has DDR and other one DDR2. I'm not really familiar with those terms. Can somebody explain to me which one can i do?
I was checking on EBAY, to buy them but i'm not pretty sure:
