May 7, 2010I just got my new system, and wanted to remove the crapware before creating my recovery disks. I did that, then ran the Sony utility to create the recovery disks. I did not install anything.
One thing I uninstalled was SQL Server. I have no need of it.
Building the recovery froze at various stages of completion... 44%, 27%, 21%. I got an alert with the error, "Failed to start database service". I finally caught that error right away and dismissed -- then the system finished building the recovery disks.
Great -- now I have to wonder, are the recovery disks even valid?
Also, what database service does the system want, and what process wants it? I now get this error at arbitrary times. Sometimes on startup. Usually whenever I do anything with install/remove programs. So is this some new Windows 7 enhancement to the registry? Have I created a time bomb in my system by deleting SQL Server? If Windows 7 needs this, why did it let me delete it?
So far I wish I had a DOS machine. It's unfortunate that my work requires me to use Windows -- the OS treats me badly, and I can't use my new machine until I can predict whether the initial setup is valid.

Jan 29, 2013The hard drive went bad on my Inspiron M5030. I had made system recovery DVDs (Win7) when I first got it, so I replaced the hard drive and restored the system from the DVDs to the new hard drive. All went great, and Win 7 worked perfectly until I shut the system down (restarts work fine). After a shutdown, and upon startup, I get this error:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
I have tried going in the bios and the system sees the new hard drive. I also tried all the Dell diagnostics (F12), and all passed, including the hard drive.
There is no option to "Repair" once I boot from the Recovery DVDs, only to restore the system completely, which I've done twice now with the same results.
It seems that the lack of a recovery partition on the new hard drive might be to blame? I don't know. I'm out of options at this point.

Mar 20, 2013My Inspiron 15z was just repaired today (it got a new motherboard due to a different problem that is now fixed). But now, whenever I start up my laptop, I get an error message from Intel Rapid Start Technology Manager that says "Your system does not appear to have Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled." I have never gotten this error message before. It is only now after my motherboard has been replaced. I don't understand what Intel Rapid Start Technology is and if I should have it enabled, and if so how to enable it.

Mar 12, 2013My 4 month old Pavilion G6-2155sf cannot boot. In normal startup it just gets stuck on the windows logo.
If I press F11 i get this message :

Apr 28, 2013My Dell Studio 1555 won't start anymore. When I want to turn it on, I get a beeping signal (2 beeps) and nothing happens. I tried all possible troubleshooting tips from the dell website (disconnecting all power and hold power button, reconnect to power, checked battery with the button on the battery, all fine, can't get into bios because computer doesn't start at all) but nothing works. Recently I also checked if the motherboard is connected properly and there is no issue either.
I also purchased a new dell adapter because my old one was a little bit damaged. The adapter is like the old one, and it's originally dell and the correct one for the studio 1555 so it can't be the adapter. Laptop also doesn't start when the battery is not in and it's only connected to the power.

Oct 27, 2009My brother has got an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop. When he tries to start the laptop he gets a blue screen with the error message contained in the attached file. When I try restarting and pressing F8 to enter Safe Mode it just continues to this screen.
It started happening after HP requested that he download some new software to his machine. He did so and this problem started. It was a popup on the screen which asked him to install new software.
I am trying to troubleshoot it for him.

Mar 16, 2009I understand you can run off the adapter, But with the battery installed , i cannnot. If i plug adapter in like Iam charging it (not turning power on ) the light in front lights up just briefly then nothing. I also can't power laptop on. If i run the adapter with no battery in laptop everything works fine. What causes that? Just a bad battery? motherboard is new and so is the cord.

Sep 25, 2009So I bought a sealed box 8530w off eBay. Now I know from previous HP business models that the warranty start date on the online lookup tool starts from the day the laptop was manufactured. This hasn't ever been an issue in the past, since I got previous laptops second hand anyway.
But this one is already nearly 6 months into its 3 year warranty. I guess it has been sitting around sealed in its box for a while.
So...
1. Is there any way I can get HP to update the warranty start date? (I'm getting an invoice from the seller as we speak)
2. Assuming I can, will that new warranty start date be reflected in the online lookup?
3. Will the new warranty start date be transferable if I sell the laptop, or will it only apply to me, with my name on the invoice?

Apr 26, 2010My dv9843cl will not start, refusing to even go into BIOS, even though the screen turns on. This is suspiciously similar to what happened to my last laptop, and I suspect that a faulty graphics chip is at fault. I was playing Team Fortress 2 shortly before it crashed, and it was performing poorly, and occasionally making random colored boxes or random interference appear on the screen.
Unlike my last laptop, however, I'm not sure if there was a recall for the graphics chip, and since I bought the laptop in 2008 from Costco without anything other than the standard warranty, I'm probably not eligible for free repairs, right? -_-
HP/Compaq :: HP Dv5z Series- With USB Devices And Start Up
Mar 4, 2009I have had a HP dv5z w/ windows Vista Home Premium - 64 bit for two days now.
1) I have a wired USB mouse that I use since the touchpad is terrible. But everytime, I plug in this supposedley plug and play mouse, there is a message that says device driver is being installed and it takes a few moments before the mouse can be recognized. Is this normal?
2) Also, the day i got my laptop, i had to download Windows updates (the automated message on the control panel said so!) and installed them. I am not sure if its related but since then i have re started my laptop 2-3 times and there is a file check process that happens as a part of the start up and then just before the welcome screen comes, i get a message
