I had hp pavilion 2230 tx laptop which is out of warranty. My laptop doesn't starting .It goes on Automatic Repair and after a minute it starts "Diagonising your PC" which remain for hours and at last "Automatic repair failed" message appears, below it restore option is also available. I proceed to restore but it also fails. Then I shutdown the laptop and open it again and I pressed esc button quickly and then I tried to test the hard drive which doesn't go furthur testing and display "hard drive test fails". I have a Pavilion DV6-2140EI notebook with a failed hard drive. I purchased a new hard drive but to my surprise, all recovery disks or system image files are useless without the recovery partition on the drive. It appears that HP and Microsoft teamed up to not support hard drive failure. As you no longer get the original operating system on disk anymore, it looks like one is forced to purchase Windows again after hard drive failure.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5050. The hard disc of the laptop makes little clicking sound, which can be heard only in silence or if you keep it close to your ear, but yeah it makes those sounds continuously. I bought it last year and I noticed this sound after like 4 months. I have the latest firmware update installed and also checked the hard disc for errors, but that isn't making any effect. It working completely fine. I use it moderately, some Ms office works and a sometimes games too, like about 6 hours a day. No hangs, No high temperature and nothing.
But since I've experienced trouble with the hard disc of a PC (which crashed within days after it started making sounds), i am a little tensed about it. Should i take it to a service center? will a hard disc format be useful. The sound is louder when the device is booting.
I am using windows 7 Home basic SP1 x64, the hard disc is ST 9500325AS 500GB, 2GB RAM.

I haven't posted in quite a while. Recently my Vostro 1700 has been making some clicking noises that really sound like hard drive clicking.
I hear them once or twice every hour, although the computer's performance remains perfectly normal. At first I thought it was an OS issue but I downgraded to XP and then upgraded back up to Vista and the clicking sound remains.
Could this really be hard drive clicking? The computer is just over a year old (Dec. 2007) and has the 250GB 5400RPM hard drive.

hard drive makes a VERY loud clicking sound every 4-10 minutes no matter what I do. I've contacted Acer and they told me it would take 10-14 days plus shipping both ways (which I would have to pay for) to fix it under warranty.
I've tried looking up any sort of Free Fall technologies, whatever they might be named.
What I found out is that I have a Seagate Momentus HDD inside my machine. Is there anything I can do about the hard drive myself (i.e. disabling the Free Fall) or do I just send it in?
Now that I've explained the problem, I'll explain why I'm not willing to send it in.
I am a full-time college student (18 credit hours!) so needless to say, I NEED this laptop! Which is why I am very hesitant to part with it.
It hasn't been out of the house in the 6 weeks I've had it. It's been on a desk. (I've checked the desk for level, and it checks out A-OK).

I've got a random clicking sound coming from my HDD (XPS m1330, 200 GB 7200 RPM drive) - so far only when running a certain torrent. Turning the torrent off stops the clicking, etc.
I called Dell who told me to run HDD diagnostics which found no errors whatsoever. Also, my system isn't freezing/slow at all. I reflashed the bios with the most updated one (A15) at the tech's suggestion but it made no difference... I prefer A09 since the fan runs less so unless anyone can confirm the bios might make a difference I'll revert it...

My HP Pavilion DV9740 notebook's hard drive has recently begun clicking. It sounds exactly like the armature parking itself. It is two clicks (slightly different sounding) back to back, and the pair occurs sometimes once or twice a minute. The hard drive did not do this for the first 11 months. Other than the relentless clicking, the computer appears to be working fine.
What is this? Is there a setting that might have been changed that is causing the heads to park frequently?

I hate for this to be my first post, but after looking everywhere on the internet and on this site (I've been lurking a while) I'm still at the same place I started with my Studio 15 laptop. I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
I had my laptop plugged into my LCD tv via an HDMI cable as I often do, and when I went to close the laptop to use just the LCD, the tv flashed, showed a blue screen of death for a quick second and then went black. I opened the laptop and it was still on, but the screen wouldn't go on.
I restarted my computer and from there on out it kept making a beeping noise and stalling for a really long time at the "Dell Studio/progress bar" screen. After leaving it at that screen for a while the clicking stop and then it allowed me to access the Boot Options and Setup. Under setup, when I click on the drive under SATA hard drive, it shows something like 10GB and nothing more, and I have no options on the screen .....

Alright, so I bought an Inspiron 15 7000 series laptop in October and I have two main issues with it.
One is that the w key keeps falling off. The plastic hinge thing underneath is broken.
Second, I think the hard drive is failing. It's making weird beeping sounds, clicking, takes a long time to boot up, crashes occasionally and moves icons around on my desktop every time I start the damn thing up.
My question: what can I do about it? How do I go about getting this fixed? I love the laptop aside from those problems. Is it covered under warranty? Do I go back to the store I bought it from, or do I just work it out with Dell?

My WD 320gb hard drive failed for the first time since I got it in January by registering the error 2000 0141.
I phoned dell after it wouldn't turn on again and I reseated the drive, took out battery, powered on to discharge static etc.,
he arranged for a replacement drive to be sent on monday. after that I tried again last night and now it works., typing from it now, and no noises or anything seems to be functioning fine!
So, what should i do now?
install the new drive & all my software - real pain, but knowing new drive won't fail? did the error message mean my current drive is on the way out anyway?

We've got 2 D430's in house and they are awesome. One of them just had the hard drive stop working and it was confirmed by swapping drives between the two systems. These have a 2.5" proprietary connection and Dell is telling me that there is no way to access the drive to potentially recover the data since its not a standard PATA interface. It's got some really small ribbon connector on the drive that hooks into a custom connection to the D430.
Does anyone have any ideas, or familiarity with how we can get access to this drive so we can run some utilities on it? Dell seems to be of little help here and the D430 simply doesn't recognize the drive at all. I'm not sure I would have bought these systems knowing that this was a potential issue.
I'm hoping there is some know interface that will allow the drive to hook into a standard PATA connection to recover data.

I have an almost-new Z series, bought in the US (I am in the UK) in December.
It seems the hard drive has failed, as it started BSODing on boot. I tried to run the recovery partition and also Windows 7 recovery mode from a Windows 7 install disc, and these simply hung. Further attempts to fix it using Windows XP and Windows Vista media also failed with similar issues.
I was able to boot using NTFS4Dos, although it didn't seem to read my data partition very well, as files were missing.
Booting with Knoppix was more fruitful, as everything seemed to be there. I rewrote the MBR and didn't get anywhere, so then I deleted the three partitions (recovery, Windows reserved, and data partition) and started again.
Now Windows installs, but it BSODs after the first reboot.
I guess my hard drive has failed, somehow (there are no mysterious noises, and I don't recall any impacts, it's remotely possible my kids took a magnet to it, however).

I bought yesterday new notebook, HP ENVY 17-j162no. The very first time (and each time later) I started the laptop, I got an error of smart drive failure. I have never before on any computer experienced that even after such an error, nothing seems to be broken. I went to BIOS and ran the examining tool, and you can see below the results. What's the next step to do?

Unit powered up fine before, no issue's....worked like a champ until drive failure.
Had a hard drive error code, replaced w/ upgraded 500GB from 320GB. Computers are not my acumen although I found that I can take them apart and put them back together w/o issue-so far. Rebuilt my old Toshiba Satellite 455...new base, top, charger jack, screen, etc..works perfectly! It would be the drive which slides in on the left,, held by two screws, not the disk drive unit.
Powered up fine, than several minutes later powered off. Charger is fine, I replaced the charger jack, still won't power up.
I broke the WLAN white connector, pulled the male end off the board by accident., black OK. It broke when I went to replace the charger port. That wouldn't cause it to not power up though right?
I replaced the complete charger port board, not just the port. Seems something happened after I replaced the new driver card

Did a clean install of Win7 Pro the day after I received my 1647 (see specs in signature). Updated the BIOS to A04 and received my replacement 130w adapter via courier yesterday.
Migrated my data from my old daily use machine and started to use the XPS1647 as my new daily use late last week. I immediately noticed that the hard drive tends to "click" (for lack of better terminology) on a regular basis. It almost sounds like the drive head is constantly parking and un-parking.
Note: I am pretty sure it is the hard drive causing the noise. Front left hand side next to the track pad is where the noise seems to be originating.
I have the power settings set to never turn off the hard drive when plugged in (this was my initial suspicion of what was causing the noise).
I am thinking of calling Support and just having a tech come and have a look at it. The problem is the noise seems to come and go as it pleases (ie I can't reproduce the issue at will). Of course if and when the tech comes to have a look at it and the noise isn't being produced they will just tell me I am nuts.
Are any other XPS1647 owners hearing the same thing I am? If this is indeed the Hard Drive I am a little concerned as it seems flaky already...

When I diagnose my laptop, I got Hard Drive Short DST Failure . I have called HP service center and they were telling to replace the hard drive.
But I have some many important files and documents in my laptop. is it possible to recover my files using some method?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110. The Warranty ran out in July of last year so for some reason I cannot email technical support directly.I ran the Dell PC Diagnostic test earlier today, all of which passed with the exception of the SMART Short Self Test which failed. Apparently my hard drive is "operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced". I tried this twice, once with the Dell diagnostic software installed on my laptop and once using the downloadable diagnostics from the Dell website, both had the same outcome.
I then tried the system diagnostics accessed via the F12 key on system startup. Again all passed but the hard drive test which would not run and provided the following message:
Error code 2000-0142
validation 12985
Msg Hard Drive 0 s/n (omitted), self test unsuccessful status = 7
I have read around on the support forums that the next step to try is removing and replacing the hard drive then re-running the diagnostics. If this does not solve the issue and I have to replace the hard drive does that mean I will need to buy a new copy of windows to install on the hard drive, as my laptop came with no disks? I have backed up all my important files but obviously not any programs.
what my next steps would be and what the process is should I have to replace my hard drive? I am a "noob" in this area and don't want to spending uneccassary money on parts that don't need to be replaced or buying software I don't need to replace as it is already available if you see what I mean?

There's a "disk read error occured" when I startup and it won't boot into windows at all. I did a hard disk test in BIOS and the Short DST failed and the failure id is GTU23F-5QF788-XD6V5F-60UR0 for Hard Disk 1. I know there's an 80 SSD and 750 HD but which one failed?
If the ssd failed can I use the 750gb HD or does it need both?
If I do need to replace the SSD can I replace it with a regular HD (on a budget) and what size drive do I need? 2.5?

When idle, my harddrive makes a very faint clicking noise. By "clicking", I mean the same sound it makes when it is loading something... you know, that "tik tik tik" noise.
However, when idle, it tends to make little "tik" noises every 2/3 seconds or so.
Now, according to the internet, clicking means my HD is about to die... but having looked on youtube, by clicking people mean very loud clicking, like i was turning a light switch on and off...
Now I don't know. Is "access" clicking every few seconds normal? Or should i get my hd replaced??
To clarify, the clicking i am experiencing is no louder than the clicking you hear when ur HD is accessing information. If I used HDParm and play with the settings, the clicking sounds becomes almost impossible to hear and less frequent.
