Oct 14, 2009Anyone else having problems with DCP 1.3000 A12 (or something like that) on Vista x64?
Specs are in my sig.
Basically, after installing the newest DCP today, I lost control of screen brightness and the Auto-Light Sensor, meaning I can't change the brightness levels, NOR does the ALS affect brightness levels. I still have control of the keyboard backlight though.
After trying the 2 older DCP versions on Dell's site, the results were the same. The ALS version never changed.

Feb 8, 2010Has anyone used the newest version of Control Point System Manager software?
They really really dumbed it down as now you don't have the ability to individually turn off things (SD card reader, DVD/CD Rom, etc).
If anyone does any type of power management with individual parts I'd highly advise them to avoid this version.

Apr 17, 2009Just got my E4300. There are a few things bugging me about the unit such as the touchpad and touchpad buttons.
But one of the real annoying things is the Control Point.
Especially for wi-fi.
Once the computer is running, I can see at least four items on my system tray associated with wifi, or connecting to it.
How can I simply let the windows wifi manage my wifi?
For some reason,
when I hybernate or go on standby, the wifi (managed by Control Point) doesn't automatically connect again. I have to disable my wifi and enable it again to find my router. Or Reboot.
Very annoying.
It also completely disables the windows built wifi. So "repair" wifi doesn't work because it doesn't even see my network.
So, Is it ok to disable simply the wifi portion of the control point?
Better yet, what's the proper way of doing this?
I'm fine with the other stuff, I just find the wireless networking portion of it annoying.

I do not want to install DCP for security, power saving, etc because last time I installed security and power saving DCP, it caused me disaster.

Mar 31, 2010Weird question, but: why is it that in Apple Mail, I can set an outgoing font to 15-point Calibri and have it look identical to an incoming Office 2007 user's message sent from Outlook (and in fact, "show fonts" shows it as 15-point Calibri), but in Word 2008, if I were to set it to 15-point Calibri, it would be huge compared to what I remember it as in Office 2007?
Its default in Office '07 is 11 point, if memory serves. To my eyes, 10-point zoomed to 150% looks normal, but I definitely do not remember this.
Is this just a function of OSX's 72 dpi versus Windows's 96 dpi? I'd hate to send an email at 15-point Calibri, have it look like an 11-point Calibri message in Outlook '07 on the Windows size, and end up having my recipient get an email with a HUGE font.
I've looked at messages I've sent using 14- or 15-point Calibri in Outlook 2010 in Windows 7 via Boot Camp, and it looks like I'd expect 11-point Calibri to look.

Aug 1, 2009I was using I8KFanGui for a long long time to control the fans and it was doing a fine job. But it sort of stopped working after I installed Windows 7 RC2 as it can only force both the fans to run at high speed.
The manual option to run the fans at low speed at all times and automatic settings don't work anymore.
I tried speedfan too but the option to turn on Dell settings is not working either. The fans turn on only after the CPU goes above 65C or so.
So, wondering if anyone else using Win7 on this laptop and able to control the fans. BTW, there are absolutely no other problems and it runs smoother than the XP days .....

Apr 14, 2009I contact you because I bought a Dell Studio 1735 a while ago and since I dont like Windows Vista I changed the OS to XP. Reading this forum I managed to make everything work, Wifi, TouchPad, Video, Sound which was a Sound Blaster Audigy not the one that comes in the Std Studio model and everything else BUT the remote control.
I installed the drivers for the IR port from [url]and it says the device is working properly, yet the remote is not functional.
Has anyone been able to make the device work under XP?

Sep 29, 2009Has anyone had an issue where the ALS suddenly stops working under Windows 7? I've checked BIOS settings, tried seemingly every combination of driver uninstalls/reinstalls, confirmed that both the Dell and Microsoft ambient light sensor services are enabled and running (and tried disabling, one, the other, and both) and have not had any luck. Unlike some other posts I found on here with the same-body Lattitude models, I can control the backlight manually with both the keyboard and software - it is only the ambient sensor that does not work.
I am running BIOS A15, and Windows 7 x64 RTM.

I am running on a C2D T7400 processor with the Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 graphics card.
I thought it was a driver related problem, so, made sure to install all correct drivers and also install the BIOS A10 update .....

My computer gets all current HP/Microsoft updates automatically.My volume control moves up and down automatically. I can choose mute and it will not stay muted. I have turned off my built-in microphone. I had to unistall my HP SmartMenu controls because the buttons wouldn't respond and the on-screen volume display would activate every time the windows volume control would move causing me not to be able to play any games. I have ran MSE and MalwareBytes and have not found any viruses or ad/spyware that is causing the trouble. I don't' know what to do..I really don't want to have to go through the process of windows re-install or game re-installing.

Aug 28, 2011I have installed Windows 8 on a HP dv6-6096 nr which I purchased in may 2011. I did an upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium. Every time, I hightlight control panel, the machine reverts back to the desktop. How do I fix this?
I thave updated my video drivers. I an't tell waht other devices are not usiable in Windows 8.
I figured that I can go a clean install and all should work but I don't know if I can re-install under Windows 8.
Here is an update:The HP dvd6-6096nr used NON-STANDARD function which folks at HP, Microsoft and Microcenter have been made aware of. So the ways to get into Safe mode, Shift F8 is the easy way. For me, that doesn’t work. Using Windows key +x, lets me run msconfig.Using msconfig and booting into safe mode, action center tells me that I need to install 3 drivers: (Intel Bluetooth wireless driver, HP power management and Intel wireless display). Those were installed.I rebooted the machine, Control panel still crashes.Rebooted into safe mode, action center still shows that I need to install these 3 drivers.Since Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to boot windows to update drivers, that is where I am at. My choice is (1) install Windows 8 (not upgrade) or forget about Windows 8. The problem is (1) will Windows 8 re-activate and if other licensed software will re-install?

Jan 3, 2015Because of a virus, I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have gotten everything else working except the fingerprint reader.I have installed the Validity Fingerprint Reader driver from the Dell Support site. The fingerprint reader shows up in the Device Manager. However, the Biometric Devices applet doesn't appear in the Control Panel.
I tried letting Windows update detect the fingerprint reader. It installed a driver for a Synaptics device. This was enough to get the Biometric Devices applet to appear in the Control Panel. However, when I tried to configure the fingerprint reader, I got an error saying no fingerprint management software was installed. I have seen lots of posts online directing me to validityinc.com for drivers or the DigitalPersona software, but Validity Inc. seems to have gone out of business. The DigitalPersona software is available on the Dell Support site for my service tag.
I have even tried installing the Windows 8 Validity Sensor Driver for my laptop, but though it successfully installs, it produces the same results.
Apple :: How Do I 'point' Home Folders To Different Drives
Aug 23, 2009I have a SSD/HDD setup in my 13" MBP, 60GB and 500GB respectively, that being said, I want to make the link to "Movies, Torrent, and Applications" go there.
For Torrent and Applications it's easy, move the folders, delete the original, set an alias in the home folder. Done. (My application folder is for storing Games, and other Apps that are either OSX or WIndows apps, not the actual App folder that OSX uses for programs.)
Anyways, I create a Movies folder on my other HDD, and go to delete the old Movies folder on the SSD/OSX Drive, and OSX tells me, "You cannot delete because this folder is required by OSX."
OK, but how do I get it to link to the new drive?
In Win 7 I remember just opening properties, and clicking 'set target folder' and bam it's done. I did this a lot back then.
ALSO, If I UNMOUNT my second HDD, does it 'shut off' and 'stop consuming power'?
I realised I can re-mount it in Disk Utilities, and probably with a Unix command.
I just wanna save power when I'm mobile, by not having to use the spinner.
