Dell :: Frequent Shutdown
Jan 24, 2009
Does the laptop need frequent shutdown, in case if we are leaving it all the time by turning off the display/screen, while downloading or leaving it to do any other background task like defrag/scanning/downloading while we aren't on laptop?
does anyone here completely turn off laptop without leaving it to sleep/hibernate mode while we aren't using it?
do leaving the laptop without turning off does causes any problem to laptop?
i have closely monitoring the temp as i leave it on all the time while downloading and not doing any-other work on it, so leaving the laptop on always does cause any problem .....

I clearly haven't pinpointed the problem which is why I'm posting here. But since receiving the macbook pro unibody (17") a few weeks ago, all is fine and dandy, but sometimes there are lock ups and long load times.
Two examples are, when using sequential (yes I hate iphoto, I just want something like irkfanview for windows, simple and to the point) sometimes when I open a picture it takes like 10 seconds or more to load. Does this matter with how many pictures is within the folder?
And the biggest assumed culprit of all, firefox. It seems that firefox tends to freeze up for a while and then return to normal quite often. In some bad cases, my computer just stops responding. As in everything displays normally but I can't type anything or move my mouse.
I'm pretty sure I shouldn't have any ram issues, although I tried googling for a ram scanner but the closest thing I found was a crucial ram scanner that just recommends me to buy more ram (duh). So I'm guessing this is probably an osx and/or firefox problem.

My new inspiron 15 has an issue with the touchpad - the two finger scroll functionality breaks at irregular but very frequent intervals.
I'd spend 15 minutes on the computer and I'd suddenly not be able to use any multi-finger gestures on the touchpad, specifically the two-finger scroll. I've noticed that at that point, pinch zoom doesn't work either which leads me to believe it's a general issue with multi-finger gestures.
Restarting the computer always fixes it.
I can't tell if this is a hardware defect or a software issue.I've reinstalled the latest touchpad drivers from dell but it has made no difference.

My Ideapad S510p has accrued over 10 BSODs over the past 2 weeks. It is totally random, not due to putting it in sleep mode, and apparently is caused by a failure in the ntoskrnl.exe and usbehci.sys.
Â
I have tried looking for malfunctioning devices, and disabled bluetooth as it was apparently not working.
Â
I also installed several new drivers. This solved nothing, and I am at a loss of what to do entirely.

I have the Dell Latitude D820, and my problem is this...............
When I go to Start>Shutdown
It goes through the motions as in it's shutting down.
But then it will stay on the Wallpaper image, with no Icons and it will just stay on till I hold down the power button.
I want to be able to go to Start>Shutdown
So it will shut down all by its self, so I don't have to hold down the power button!

I've noticed that when I shut down the computer, just before everything turns off I hear a loud(ish) click from the back of the computer. Same sort of noise as when you turn on a light switch, maybe a little sharper.
At first I thought it might be the speakers, but not so sure. Anyone else have this? It might just be hardware turning off

i just wanted to know how high the temperatures on the m1530 can go until the computer shuts down ( for CPU, GPU, and ACPI )
I ask this because my lappy will suddenly restart after some stressing while OCing my GPU to 625 core, 890 mem. (no i dont want you posting that its my fault, that im an idiot, that i shouldnt OC this lappy and such)
Its usually stable when gaming (ie. Team Fortress 2), stays at 72C CPU and 81C GPU OCd, but when i try a heavier game ( EVE Online) it will restart after about 20-30 minutes of use.

I have a Dell XPS L702X that I bought June of 2011. It has been working fine up to this point. I ended up replacing the battery but other that that it has been a dependable champ.
Today I upgraded the video drivers. I fired up World of Warcraft and was checking out the new settings when the laptop just shut down. I tried the power button but nothing worked.Â
I unplugged it from the wall, removed the battery and pressed the power button for ten seconds. I put the battery back in, plugged it back into the wall, still no power up.Â
The wall socket is good, the power supply is good (i get the glowing LED at the end of the power cord) and (as stated) the batter is practically brand new (got it a few months ago)
I'm guessing power supply or motherboard failure. If this is true how much am I looking at to get it fixed? or am I better off buying a new laptop?

I was using my Dell XPS 15z when it turned off (didn't shut down). The system made a click noise and then it was gone; it will not power on. I get no battery lights and I get nothing when pressing the power button. I verified the AC adapter is working. When I plug the AC power in the wall socket, the light comes on; however, when I connect the Ac to the laptop the power light goes out on the AC adapter. The system was not hot, no burning smells. There appears to be substantial number of XPS systems experiencing the same failure. I have tried a second AC adapter and no joy. I have read most of Dell's responses to this same issue. The fell its a motherboard failiure. Has Dell issued a recall for XPS 15Z since this is a known issue?Â

New British poster here, please be gentle ;] !
I'm glad I found some fellow XPS users, maybe you could give me some advice.
I got my new(ish) M1530 yesterday (refurb from Dell Outlet, saved me £200).
Initially I was very pleased, its a lovely machine, but I then found a problem - its the curse of the random shutdown!
I first noticed it when running 3dMark this morning to demo the XPS.
It happens fairly consistently after a few minutes; the machine doesnt feel hot.
I phoned Dell support (took 1.5 hours) and they/we found it shuts down in the diagnostics tests too.
Conclusion: Replace motherboard, engineer booked.
However I have discovered it only happens when its on battery power - everything is fine on AC power.

Recently upgraded my Dell XPS 13 L321X BIOS to ver 8. Since then, whenever I close the lid and put the laptop to sleep for several hours, the processor seems to come and the bottom frame is very hot. When the lid is opened the screen remains blank and doesn't wake from sleep mode. The only recourse is to do a hard shutdown with the power button and then restart. The laptop then reboots to the black trouble shooting screen, or select the normal windows boot. I've since tried to update all the drivers, but still no luck. It continues to run hot and refuses to start after placing the laptop in the sleep mode.

First of all my M1330 has been serving me quite well lately. I've only had it for about 6 months, but the only problems I've had were the computer getting hot.
As of last night, when I pressed the power button to go into sleep mode (I always do this before I go to bed),
it would pop up a BSOD, and then restart my computer, and pop up a black screen asking if I wanted to reboot in safe mode or not

I upgraded to BIOS A15 when it came out and since then I have had a problem that I never had before. I have now downgraded to BIOS A14 and the problem is gone.
Problem description
When rebooting or shutting down Windows XP the shutdown process hanged. I think it only occurred when the computer was docked in the docking station. I have the advanced docking station with serial port, parallel port etc.
After I upgraded to A15 I noticed that the parallel port and serial port got listed the safe remove dialog box. With A14 and before they are not listed.

I have a dell inspiron 1545. In the last month a trojan virus was discovered (unknown if this has anything to do with anything). I thought the fan was making a lot of sounds so over the weekend I sprayed it with canned air, which stopped the noise. Yesterday it started just shutting down. It does not re-start without you physically pushing the button. This can happen at any time.
I used Dell's PC Doc Came up with the following errors:
Tested and Needs Attention: (1)  Video Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family Shader Rendering DX10 Test   Cannot Run The test cannot complete due to a possible driver problem.
THE FOLLOWING PASSED BUT SHOWED A MINUS SIGN:Advanced Pattern Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Bit Low Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Bit High Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational.Nibble Move Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Walking One Left Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Walking One Right Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Auxiliary Pattern Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Address Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Modulo20 Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. Moving Inversion Test   Passed The memory in this system is operational. I tried doing a diagnostic with an F12 at startup, and it does the same shut down deal during that as well. So it does not complete.

I am using Dell Inspiron 15, Model 3520. I bought laptop in January 2013 and its started giving this kind of error.
When I am using it continuously its working fine , when i go away from system(kept idle for sometime) it gets shutdown. So I need to re-login and it closes all the application which i was using before shutdown.
I already did some initial checks like scanning entire system for virus(i hardly have any data on system) and Dell online PC Check which passes all the test.
