Dell Latitude E7240 :: Touchpad Multi Finger Gestures
Nov 15, 2014
Latitude E7240 has Touchpad Alps. All works fine except settings "Flick" (Gestures -> Multi Finger Gestures).
This setting works, but after some time (random period) stops working. To fix this I need restart Apoint.exe or go to settings, deselect Flick and select it again.
My laptop's BIOS has latest version A11 and all drivers installed from web site Dell.
Also, I tried to install Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 with touchpad drivers only, but this did not solve problem.

I knew nothing of it until I made my icons big by mistake, then I slid my fingers back together and they went back small and I was like .
Pretty cool feature! is this new to the Vaio Laptops?

Two finger scrolling now works on the synaptics touchpad of my dv7
I had previously attempted to use modded drivers and other apps (none of which worked), but surprisingly, synaptics seems to have enabled it all by themselves in the latest driver, which is part of scrybe.
More about scrybe: [url]
Guide:
1. Download the ScrybeSetup.exe file from here (you can enter a junk email): [url]
2. Install the software (Make sure it installs both scrybe and the new driver)
2.1 Restart
3. Go to Control Panel>Mouse>Device Settings (Tab)>Highlight Synaptics Touchpad Vx.x> then click settings
4. Once you have the Touchpad settings windows open, you can change all kinds of settings:
Multifinger Gestures>Two Finger Scrolling (Click the gears next to the name)
Multifinger Gestures>Rotating (Click the gears next to the name)......

Use MultiClutch to assign multi-touch gestures in almost any application in OS X!
Quote:
Basically, Multiclutch allows you to assign custom keyboard shortcuts in a given app to a given gesture. Want swipes to change tabs in Safari? Done. The same in iChat? Done. Want zoom-in to open emails in Mail, zoom-out to close windows in every app, and a swipe down to bring up Quicksilver? Done done done.
MultiClutch works by installing a simple input manager that catches gesture events, looks to see what shortcut you’ve defined for it in the frontmost app (if you haven’t defined anything, it behaves in the standard manner), and performs that shortcut. You use a System Preference Pane to customize gestures with an interface similar to the shortcut-customization table in the Keyboard & Mouse pane. You can ‘bind’ gestures in a given Cocoa app (due to the nature of input managers, Carbon apps are not supported) or globally.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 and installed the Dell Synaptic Drivers v13.2.2.2, I seem to have gained additional touchpad gestures.
Along with the original chiral-scroll and two-finger zoom I now have:
-two-finger scrolling (vertical and horizontal)
-three-finger forward/back for web browsers and the Windows image viewer
-rotate
-three-finger quick launch (holding three fingers down for 1 second opens notepad)
-momentum (I'm not sure if this one is new)

I recently bought a Vostro V13 (base model) with Celeron 743 + 2gb ram = Ubuntu 9.10.
I decided to switch to Windows 7 64bit. Everything runs fine, except for the touchpad. I doesn't have any multi touch capability what so ever.
I tried a few things:
Update driver automatically
Update driver directly from Synaptics
Install driver from Alps
Nothing worked. Now, I just realized that the Synaptics setting option doesn't even has the "virtual scrolling menu".

i'm having problems with my new acer v5 touchpad... i made a clean install of windows 8.1 and installed all the win 8.1 drivers from the acer support site. from the device id of my touchpad (ACPISYN1B71) i assumed that it is a synaptics model.
Â
the problem now: after installing several versions of the driver, even trying the alps and elantech versions, i could never manage to get multi-gesture settings in the settings windows from synaptics - there are only settings visible for right- and left-click. where are the multi-touch gesture options for windows 8?
Â
basic funtions work, like left click, two-finger right click and two-finger scrolling, but nothing is configurable and all the other gestures are not available.

I love the hardware design of the XPS 15, except that the touchpad is unusable for scrolling. Â My old Latitude 6520 at least could use the scroll zones well, but with the buttons on the L521x being part of the touchpad, the horizontal scroll zone impacts button usage and isn't worth it.The big issue is the multi-finger scrolling jumps significantly when lifting fingers. Â I've tried every version of the driver I could find, and they all have this issue. Â If you make sure you completely stop scrolling before lifting fingers, then lift one at a time, I can usually avoid the jump, but that take more time than just using the keys to scroll.
Is there a way to either disable horizontal scrolling using scroll zones or fix the 2 finger scrolling to not jump? Â Except for that issue (and some sporadic wifi issues that my be fixed with newest driver), this laptop would be perfect for me.

it looks like Synaptics has added gesture support for their touchpads with just a software update. [url] The website says the software is backwards compatible with computers purchased in the last year or so. I just got my HDX18t a week ago and can't seem to get it to work.

We have bought a bunch of Latitudes E7240 and deployed them with the new Dell Data Protection | Security Tools (DDP|ST).Now we have discovered that if you attempt to login with the wrong credentials the device (HDD) will be locked. This is expected as it is one of the purpose of having Disk encryption enabled BUT if a user accidentally lock the HDD by typing wrong credentials you would expect to be able to UNLOCK it with the admin password. (You create one when first enabling DDP|ST)
So, the user forgot he's credentials and the screen only shows "The device is locked, contact your administrator" and with NO OPTIONS what so ever! How do I, as the administrator unlock the HDD? Where do I type the admin password?

I first noticed the issue with sensitivity. The mouse was really sensitive. I then noticed that the gestures don't work either. I cannot scroll using the mouse. So I went into great depths and tried to figure out the problem (but no solution).
Â
So I performed these steps:
-Changed the pointer speed to the fastest (I didn't like the slow pointer speed). The pointer was still pretty slow.
-Decided to change the TouchPad specific drivers. I go to the ELAN tab under mouse settings. I look and see that the "Options" button is greyed out. I also noticed that it said "Standard PS/2 Mouse"I decide to find the software to change the settings and located it in C:Program FilesElantech. I open ETDAniConf.exe and decide to do a test. I uncheck the right click and left click, and some other scroll settings. No avail.
-Then I decide to uninstall and install the drivers. Did that. Nothing changed. Changing the tapping, button, scrolling options does nothing. The mouse settings still shows it as "Standard PS/2 Mouse" even though the tab says ELAN.
-I decide to take a big step and just reinstall Windows 8 altogether using Acer Recovery. Reinstalled it, still facing the same issue. Still recognized as "Standard PS/2" mouse.
-I try another way to attempt to fix the issue. I try to find the most up to date similar driver. I located on that was much newer (2013 version rather than 08.2012). Installed it, restarted computer. Still no avail. Still recognized as "Standard PS/2 Mouse".I decided to go the last route before posting the issue here. I downloaded a copy of Windows 8 Pro from Microsoft website and transferred the ISO into the bootable flash drive. I split the hard drive into a clean partition (60GB) and installed fresh Windows 8 Pro on it, without all the Acer Drivers. Of couse I was missing the network drivers so I had to go on my Desktop to download the drivers online.
- I decide to first go and download the TouchPad drivers. Downloaded them, copied on a Flash Drive, ran them on the Acer laptop. Restarted computer. Still facing the issue.Â
I got the laptop for a good discount from my work (as a bonus of working there). It was a one time discount. As you noticed, I mentioned that it was recognizing it as "Standard PS/2 Mouse". That is the huge clue that tells me that the drivers are really buggy. The issue here is that the TouchPad drivers are not recognized like it is a TouchPad, but as a Mouse. A mouse that can only do right click, left click.

I rarely use the laptop's touch pad and use a wireless USB mouse. I forgot my mouse and the touch pad wouldn't work when I started up laptop. Borrowed someone's wired USB mouse and it worked, so I ran to Walmart and picked up a $7 wired mouse.
Â
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Elan > Unistall > Reboot = Touch pad now working.
Â
But apparently the Elan didn't reinstall as I don't see it anymore in the Programs and Features list. I thought about downloading and installing the Elan drivers, but I don't want to "fix" something that isn't broken right now.
Â
/edited to say *wireless* USB mouse

Re-updated the OS back to 8.1 Pro again still not solve the issue.Does the backlit key board need special driver ? The device manager shows the keyboard as standard PS2

I have 2 new E7420 laptops that are replacing some older ones.
When I dock either of them, all I get is a flashing cursor on either the external screens, or the laptop screen. I get the Dell logo, then just a flashing cursor on the top left of the screen.
I can turn the laptop on, wait for it to boot, then dock it, but of the 3 times I've tried that, the USB didnt work once.
Have just upgraded to the latest BIOS, but it didnt change anything.
Is there some BIOS setting or something I need to change?

IÂ have just gotten an E7240 computer and have noticed that the USB ports on the back of my computer are disabled when the computer is docked which is a very unfortunate feature of this new computer model. It seems there are many people posting complaints about this feature on the internet. It basically takes a computer that has 3 USB ports and makes two of them rather useless. It is very useful if a USB receiver for keyboard and mouse can be plugged in to the back of the computer so that the mouse can be used easily when docked, but also when the computer is taken off the dock to go to a meeting room. This then leaves the side USB port available for devices such as wireless projectors when in the meeting room. Although this computer was designed to behave this way, I think that most users would agree that this is a critical issue that needs to be seriously considered and fixed by Dell as soon as possible assuming that there is not already a work around available.

My Latitude e7240 when docked onto the PR03X docking station, the power adapter that is plugged into the PR03X completely goes dead. The only way I can reset the power is by unplugging and replugging the AC adapter FROM THE WALL. Tried the spacer.  Tried double powering (1 adapter into the PR03X and another adapter into the e7240). Also tried plugging the laptop on first without power, and when powering up the laptop, it would boot up 10x slower than normal and sometimes hang. Also tried multiple other PR03X just to be sure the one i have is not faulty. The same problem is repeatable. The laptop has the latest BIOS.
It seems there is a power mismatch of some sort that would cause a) the adapter to fail, and then b) for the laptop to run extremely slow because of what?Is the problem caused by a faulty docking port on the e7240? I assume the PR03X is compatible to the e7240??

Does the Latitude E7240 can support two external displays without a dock? Can have one plugged in to the mini displayport and one in to HDMI and output just to these displays?
Or is it limited to just the laptop display and one single external display?

I've recently taken delivery of an E7240 with the FHD touch screen option. I am generally quite impressed with the laptop except for one thing, the touch screen buzzes. The sound is similar to a hard disk working, a bit random .. not a constant noise. Â The sound will immediately stop when I put a finger on the screen though which makes me think it's related to the touch screen itself.Â
Rebooting etc. makes no difference... shaking the laptop, smacking it (gently) etc. has no affect.....
I realise these laptops are new so perhaps there isn't much experience out there...

We have purchased and deployed a number of Latitude E7440's and E7240's and we are running into an issue with some of the E7240's. Â When waking from sleep while on battery power, the machine will start to wake, the display will come back and I can move the cursor but within a second or two, the cursor will freeze and the machine will become totally unresponsive. Â This doesn't happen on AC. Â I've set the power plan to 1 minute and tested over and over again and it is reproducible every time. Â The only way to recover from it is to power off the machine via the power button and restart it.
Right now this is happening on the original end-user's machine and 1 other deployed E7240 we were able to get back and test. Â I have a couple of other E7240's deployed and I have an email out to the end users to bring them in so we can check them too. Â Â
I've upgraded the BIOS from A09 to A13. Â I've tried switching wireless control from Intel to Windows. Â I've updated to the latest drivers on the Dell support site.Â
Machines are i7, 256GB SSD with 8GB RAM running Windows 7(64) Enterprise

F1 - continue
F2- change setup options
The Laptop and the dock stations are brand new. This is only happening with the 7240's.

We have several Latitude E7240's on our network. They are configured with Windows 7 x64. We have been having trouble with this particular model in regards to wireless connections.
When the laptop is powered on and the user logs in, the laptop connects to the wireless network, however it is not getting an IP address from the router. It sticks at "limited connectivity", and gives itself a "169" IP. It stays that way for about 5 or so minutes then finally connects.
The WLAN drivers are already to the latest version, and to "bandaid" the issue, I have to uninstall the Wireless NIC drivers then reinstall them.
At first I was thinking it may be a router issue (Which is a Sonicwall TZ210W), but it can't be because its wireless devices of differing models have no problem connecting and getting an IP address. Also, it starts working once the drivers are reinstalled (though I'm not confident this is a permanent fix).
All the E7240's have the Dell 1506 Wireless card, and are all and originally were) on driver version 10.0.0.268, A02. Also, I have tried turned off any power management settings of the WNIC prior to the driver reinstall.

I have found out that the touch pad surface extends further than it should. I have a habit on leaning on my elbow,
when I have my laptop on my legs I put my elbow on the palm rests. I found out quickly though that if I lean on it I end up doing a multi touch zoom,
to start off with I thought my system was just being rubbish but then I tested it again and it worked fine after I took my elbow off.
This must mean that the touch surface extends further than the edge of the "touchpad",
I just wonder how far it actually goes and whether we could make use of it .

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.Â
Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.
At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.
