Dell :: How Accurate Is The Cpu Heat Sensor On The M1710

Sep 30, 2007

Alright, so today I decided to try out I8k Fangui with Intel thermal analysis tool, and my was I shocked. My M1710 was registering temperatures of 97 degrees centigrade before I shut off the thermal analysis tool. I would've probably went way past 100. I got a non overclocked T7600G.

Dell :: M1710 And Heat

Apr 13, 2009

ive had the 1710 for two years,- but the heat issues are getting annoying.

right now with fangui just browsing

cpu load 10%
cpu temp 6969 °C
GPU 70 °C
fans rpm 4470

Have been using compressed air, cleaning the vents etc.

ive read about opening it up, but im guessing that voids the warranty. Have 2 year onsite left.

Did open a netbook to lube the fan, but im guessing its more difficult on the 1710. Also a problem if i get stuck at one point when putting it together.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Fingerprint Sensor Stopped Working - Cannot Communicate With Sensor

Jan 9, 2010

I have a T500 (LENOVO 2081CTO ThinkPad T500) running W7 32 bit.  Been working fine since September 10.  Today when simply trying to logon the fingerprint sensor has stopped working.  Laptop had not even been moved, simply resting on desk and then switched on from powered off.

A few times since have received message that "USB device is being installed"  with finally "USB Device could not be installed.  There is a problem with your device."  Device Manager showed a problem with "USB Composite device"

Powered off/on gave same symptom.

Downloaded & installed latest fingerprint software 7wf162ww.exe.  Installed OK.  USB device appeared to then automatically pick up and reinstall correctly.  BUT still unable to use fingerprint to logon or for with Thinkvantage Client Security.

Using Thinkvantage Lenovo Fingerprint Software gives error "Cannot communicate with sensor.  Please confirm the sensor is ready."

I've also noticed the keyboard around the fingerprint sensor is very warm, almost hot.  As if it is being constantly turned on?

Fingerprint sensor is AuthenTec Inc. AES2810

Dell :: How Accurate Are The Estimated Delivery Dates?

Apr 11, 2010

My Dell Studio XPS 16 (core i7 model) was ordered april 6th. The estimated delivery date was originally 4/22/10 but yesterday I logged on to see my status and it said that my laptop was "In Production" and that the NEW estimated date of delivery is 4/14/10....that means they changed my EDD to 8 days before the ORIGINAL date. Well, the 14th is in 3 days...and my laptop is still "in production" so did dell make an error on the site? If not, does that mean that it only takes 2 or 3 days for things to get delivered?

Dell :: Disabling The Infrared Sensor

Dec 13, 2009

Does anyone know how to disable the infrared sensor on an XPS 1645?

I ask as I often use the laptop while also watching a media pc and the remote control operates both the laptop as well as the media pc and it's damned annoying.

All of the items referring to the infrared receiver in the device manager can't be disabled so other than sticking a piece of tape over the sensor does anyone have any ideas?

Dell :: Faulty Thermal Sensor

Dec 30, 2008

what i wanted wass to fix/bypass the sensor without having to replace the damn board. i couldn't even find a single post staing where exactly the sensor is on the board.
my problem specifically was that beer got spilled on the keyboard. after a while the machine shorted and shut off. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300, with a 1.73 ghz Sonoma CPU. i left the laptop off for two days so some of the liquid would dry out. after some problems and a dozen reboots i got into the bios, then finally through to windows. everything was fine except that the CPU was working at a very low frequency. also the fans were continually at highest speed. the CPU was being reported between 101 mhz to 503 mhz, depending on the software. it was being recognized correctly but showing to operate at 202 mhz in the system properties panel. what was really striking is that the notebook harware software i had installed was reporting the CPU temperature as 85 C. I tried various software to manipulate the CPU frequency to no avail. The temp was a constant 85 C, although i could tell that it was not even close to this temperature since i my laptop was partly disassembled and i could feel the surface of the heatsink with my hand; it was cool.

I finally surmised that the problem was with the thermal sensor on the motherboard. it had probably shorted or got soaked and was reporting the highest temperature it could as a safety measure, thereby limiting the CPU to a very low frequency and not allowing it to throttle above 503 mhz.

My last option, save for replacing the motherboard, was to find the sensor chip, clean it, dry it and hope that it would work again.

But this is not what solved the problem. somewhere on the net i came accross a code, that when entered on an Inspiron 9100 (an older laptop, with a different chipset) would bring up the Thermal Management screen or something like that, which is certainly not accessible via the BIOS. I was playing around with the settings on a program called Hardware sensors monitor, again to no avail, when i finally decided to enter this code:

FN key + zxcvasdqwer. almost the second i pressed z, or maybe after x, the high speed fans shut off! after a short while they kicked back into operation but at a low speed, just like they were supposed to. the program hmonitor began reporting a more realistic CPU temp. i tried to play a high-def movie file and finally it played normal, without any lag or stuttering! as i played it, the fans kicked into higher mode, and the temp which had been steadily rising, began to drop. the program, and most other programs were still reporting the cpu at 202 mhz, windows system properties as well. but since it was playing a 720p video file normally, it had to be much higher than that. i did a reboot and voila!

all monitoring software are now reporting the CPU at 1.73 ghz. the system temperatures are perfectly normal, and at idle the CPU goes as low as 20 degrees C. The software Speedfan, however, is still giving an error regarding the sensor chip on the motherboard.

I seemed to have fixed the severe thermal sensor problem by a few keystrokes, without having to replace the motherboard or even the sensorchip. in fact, i didn't even have to find the sensor node and clean it.

I came accross more than a dozen people who had a very similar problem to mine, with the temperature being reported at 85-86 C, for no reason. At least those who have a Dell notebok might be able to solve this problem.

Dell :: The Free Fall Sensor Didn't Sense Anything

Mar 12, 2009

yesterday my e6400 fell from 5 feet! 1.5m! I almost caught it but it just fell. Fortunately it fell flat and there was en empty box of cleenex that fell with it and fortunately made the impact with the ground a little softer.

But STILL, I have a free fall sensor that did absolutely nothing. I picked the 6400 up and it just kept running as usual. Nothing happened to the machine, which to me is a great sign of durability, but AFAIK the HDD should have shut off, otherwise what's the point of having a free fall sensor?

Dell :: I Can't Buy M1710 Parts From SPARE PARTS W/o An M1710 SVC TAG #

Feb 21, 2008

I was going to be assembling an m1710 this weekend....

I called Dell Spare Parts a few days ago, and placed an order for the following;

HG345 Refurb bottom plastics, m1710
FF084 Refurb palmrest assy, m1710
J8841 Refurb speakers, LED, m1710
CF426 Refurb hinge cover, m1710

I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.

When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.

Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?

The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...

"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."

I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."

"Well, that's because they have m1710's"

*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."

how I can get them to sell me some refurbished plastics? What's the secret password?

HP/Compaq :: To Hack NC4200 LCD Ambient Light Sensor

Feb 6, 2009

I have the business HP NC4200 laptop, which has a great ambient light sensor.

I generally disable it, because the screen gets too dim in nearly every situation, in my opinion.

But I noticed something strange. When the ambient light sensor is disabled, it is possible to adjust the screen's brightness at your own taste. This is logical.

But you cannot get the screen to 100% brightness. The only way to get 100% brightness is to actually ACTIVATE the ambient light sensor and get a very bright light source right into the ambient light sensor. Then the screen gets MUCH brighter.

Don't bother saying, I've used the Fn keys to control the LCD brightness. That's they way it works.

I use notebook hardware control, and with the nc4200 I can monitor the power consumption of the system in Watts. When the screen is maxed out without the ambient light sensor (which is approx. 50% of the LCD brightness, in reality) the system consumes around 10 watts of power.

When I max the screen with the trick mentioned above, the screen consumes +2 Watts! No need to mention battery life drops a lot.

But I do like that brightness! I'd like to keep it all the time. But it's impossible to apply the trick all the time..................

HP Pavilion Dm4 :: Validity Sensor (VFS301) Not Working On Notebook

Apr 14, 2011

Just purchased a Pavilion dm4 notebook that came with the Validity Fingerpring scanner. As soon as I bought the laptop, I was quick to install Windows 7 Pro 64 bit as my work requires the extra features in Win 7 Pro. The stock OS that was pre-installed was Win 7 Home Prem.

So here is my issue, the fingerpring scanner wont work. I have the proper driver installed from hp's website (found here) and after rebooting, it still does not work. I have installed the hp Support application that scans my notebook for the latest drivers and found no updates needed. I have not tried rolling back the driver as the option is not available (only one driver was ever installed anyways) and I have also tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting, reinstalling the driver, rebooting, and it still will not work. I have also tried doing the same just previously mention but this time running the installation as an admin (right click, "run as administrator"). Still nothing.... I also tried navigating to the driver folder on C: and then runing the application as an admin, but still come up short handed....

Sometimes the light will come on like its working, but when I go to use it to enroll my fingerprint it just won't do anything.

Is there another piece of software besides the drvier that I need to install to get this work?
