My mums computer has ended up in a Black screen "Preparing automatic repair" loop and therefore will not boot :(
None of the repair options work from the boot options etc, so I need the OEM win 8.0 installation disk, so that I can at least boot to safe mode and maybe correct from there once out of the boot loop.
I just bought a brand new yoga 2 11 only 10 days ago. I used it this afternoon, closed it up and walked away for a couple hours. This evening I tried to wake it up, and it's stuck on the Lenovo screen. After a while, it said Preparing automatic repair. It spun for 10 minutes and the screen went black. I forced shutdown and walked away, completely frustrated. Now if I try to reboot, all I see is the Lenovo screen. Nothing is happening. What can I do?!

After a few moments it will say "Diagnosing your PC " and then "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete." Then after a few seconds it restarts and everything happens again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm very stuck with my Y580, and I'll start by saying that I purchased the laptop about 1.5 years ago, and it came with Windows 8 installed. I didn't like Windows 8 so much, so I decided that I would get Win7. I also decided that I'd put it on an mSATA to speed things up. After doing so, I just formatted the boot partition on the older drive to use for storage. But I kept the recovery partition on there. Everything seemed to work fine until I was recently informed that I should update the BIOS. I followed all of the instructions from Lenovo in updating to the version 8.00, something like 89WW in the file name. Then recently I noticed my temps were realllly hot when gaming... and I don't play graphically demanding games. I monitored my temps and found out that my CPU (i73630QM) was running over 90°c when playing games like LoL, Dishonored, RIFT, Darksiders, and a few others, all on lower settings.
I did some googling about temps and a lot of people were saying that BIOS is often a culprit for high temps. Maybe you've already put two and two together, but it took me until this point to discover that the BIOS I had updated to is a Win8 BIOS, and I'm using Win7. I figured, this is probably a big part of my issue (and even if it's not going to solve the heat issue, I'd still like to have all my ducks in a row and have all my hardware/software/firmware compatible.
As we all very well know from the few years of tampering with these Y580s, the BIOS can't simply just be rolled back. But I figured there had to be a way. After googling around for some time, I ended up trying a few different things; editing the Config file for the earlier version of the Bios (which just resulted in another error and locked up the keyboard and mouse), I tried booting the BIOS image from a USB, but to no avail (I tried both booting from USB and also a force BIOS update, using the fn+B method, which I realize I may be doing incorrectly, as I am not entirely sure what I should name the ROM file... I can't boot windows to use ANDYSTOOL, so I named a bunch of different ROM files with different names that have worked for other people) ... so on and so forth...
The last thing I've tried was Restoring the BIOS to factory settings (within the BIOS) and now the computer will not boot windows. The Lenovo screen Posts, and Windows starts to load, freezes a moment, Blue Screens for a second, then reboots, saying that there is an issue with either Hardware or software, and gives me he option to either boot windows normally (which just results in the same thing again) or to run an automatic repair. I tried the automatic repair and it just sits on the "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen, and will do so for hours with no progress.
My laptop model is DELL XPS 11. when i press the power on button, the Dell logo came out and it loads "preparing automatic repair...", then the whole screen turned black, there is nothing on the screen but I can only see the mouse cursor.
What did i do?I rebooted the laptop and immediately pressed F12 to go into diagnotics. After scanning, there was an error code 2000-0142 and the error message was Hard drive 0 - short self test unsuccessful. I even tried to use recovery media to factory reset my laptop, but it failed.I did not open up my laptop to check for any cable connection problems, because I dont know if it will void my warranty. My laptop is still under warranty.
My lenovo yoga 11 is stuck on boot (preparing automatic repair) for a day now. This tablet is what connects me with family and friends at home (been abroad in Asia for 7 months and counting). I just want it to work again, so if a total reset is needed I'm ok with that.

So I shut down the comp by unplugging the cord, after turning it on it got stuck to a 'scanning and reparing drive (d) : 0%.
I tried something like the preparing automatic repair but after this it will be just a blank sreen for hours.. tried everything
Dell Inspiron 7720 (17R SE) approx 2 years old, just started having problems about a week ago when turning on the computer. LEDs flash and dell quickset buttons light up; but then process just dies, screen is black and only the LEDs by the power symbol and on power buttons are lit, never reaches the Dell logo screen, no fan sounds or anything.
At first, hitting the power button to turn off then back on and the second time the boot process would work. Then it failed to do that, so I had to remove the battery, pull the power cord and hold the power button down for 30 sec's, and then it would boot normal. Now even that does not work, just have to keep powering down and re-powering and after a random number of times, 10-30 it finally boots normal, every once in while it will work first try. It seems to be getting worse.
I have used the Dell Diagnostic on boot (though it took many tries to get into the ePSA, that did not detect any problems. When I use the Dell Support Advanced, no problems detected, and I specifically rand the Motherboard (which included CMOS test) and those did not find any problems.
If I put the computer in sleep, it comes back fine. It is only when I shut down, laptop just will not boot until I hit power on (fail) / power off repeatedly until finally, as if by luck it works fine.
So recently I was on my laptop, and I walked away to go handle something it died of no more battery charge pretty normal I left and tried to use my laptop when I came home some hours later, and now it will not proceed to my password screen.It turns on and the circle loader just spins I'm putting this up from my phone seeing as I can't use my laptop. I ran some test that told me it failed because my dst drive , or something hard drive 1, system E I'm not really sure.
Sometimes when I turn it on it will say "starting automatic repair" or something I'll leave it on then the screen just goes black, it'll still be running. My Inspiron 1525 when it starts up and I choose startup repair after a few seconds the screen will go black. If I start up windows normally, it will think and then shows a window that says " a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".. I pressed F12 at startup and chose diagnostics and I got the error code 0142. What should I do??
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen i press the power button laptop seems to be powering up and running but the screen is black. The LEDs for power and disk are on and i can enable the keyboard back light. If i try to turn the laptop on again and again then after some time it boots up ok and then works without any problems, at least until i turn it off. I tried to connect an external monitor but it didn't get any signal.
I'm not sure if it is connected but i think it starded after i did the system recovery. I use Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.
Cannot do F12 to do Dell factory Image because of black screen. Therefore am not able to make any choices relevant to accomplish the deed?

recently installed an automatic update to windows 8.1. Now I get a black screen after the welcome page. I can load task manager and get to the internet. tried to get to safe mode at startup with f8 but several attempts were unsuccessful. I updated my graphics driver from AMD today and same black screen appears. I also restored sytem to an earlier date using the HP utility with same results - black screen after welcome page.

Last weekend i have reinstall os to win 7 64 bit on it.
Everything works fine but i'm unable to install Geforce 650M driver.
System can't see this card only Intel HD Graphic 4000.
I try to reinstall the OS couple of thimes and everytime my system can't see Geforce.
What should i do to install Geforce drivers ?
I'm stuck in the (windows8) HP pavillion's automatic repair loop and I need to know the safest rest/ way to fix this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Dell Inspiron M501R will no longer boot up - its shows a black screen and repeatedly beeps 7 times. I understand this means the mother board has failed. The service tag is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> - its waranty has recently expired.
Interestingly, if you google "Inspiron M501R" google suggests "Inspiron M501R 7 beeps". So I'm guessing this laptop has been designed to fail soon after the waranty expires.
I have written a letter to BBC Watchdog asking how long a laptop can be "expected" to last and whether this would be covered by the UK Sale of Goods Act.
I purchased my laptop a little over 2 weeks ago. After the first week I noticed that when I turn it on the dell logo will come on and then immediately go to a black screen. At that point I have to power off the back on and it boots normally. I flashed the BIOS to the A11 update but the didn't fix the issue.
View 10 Replies View RelatedBrand new Dell Inspiron 17R SE has started to switch off in a few seconds after I hit the start button. I tried going into setup using the F2 key and just doing that and exiting without saving allowed me to restart yesterday. Today, that didn't work. I had to go to Boot Options F12 and I tried randomly changing secure boot to ON and then exiting by discarding changes. That worked. I don't want to be doing this everyday.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition 7720. It came with a preinstalled Windows 8 (so 64-bit and mandatory UEFI boot). I want to use Linux (more specifically, Archlinux) for work and Windows for games, so dual boot is needed.
I almost completed the Linux installation except for the bootloader: I need to boot Linux from UEFI and didn't manage to do it so far. Here is what I did after I received the PC:
-Disabled Secure Boot; updated BIOS to version A12
-Resized the main Windows partition and created a few partitions for Linux;
-Switched to legacy boot mode and managed to boot a MBR-bootable Arch linux installation USB drive;
-Installed most of the system switched back to UEFI boot mode, Secure Boot off.
At this time I needed to boot the kernel from UEFI for the bootloader installation program to have mandatory access to the EFI environment variables. So I created an UEFI-bootable Archlinux installation USB drive (with a FAT partition) but so far I couldn't manage to successfully boot this drive from UEFI instead of Windows 8.
I think I really tried every single combination, such as:
different USB ports; different boot entries created with F2 boot setup, with different parameters; different orders for the boot entries; hit my boot entries directly within F12 boot menu.
No matter what, in UEFI mode the system always boots the Windows partition.
Also, I could not find any relevant manual or software documentation about the A12 BIOS on the Dell site, did I miss something?
The solution that the user described in this thread to UEFI-boot to a DVD did not work for me with a USB drive.
I have an Inspiron 17R SE 7720 running Windows 7 64-bit Pro which has been working fine, but I was thinking about getting an mSata flash drive to cache the hard disk, and reading on this forum discovered that my A01 bios version wasn't up to the job, so tried to update the bios tonight.
I downloaded the 7720A12.exe from the Dell site but wanted to backup my bios first. Again searching this forum, I saw a post that said there was a backup option when running the exe. Wrong.
Running it from within windows it immediately said it was going to reboot (I wasn't given an option!). My laptop powered down as if doing a restart, but immediately hung.
There was nothing but blackness on the screen, no text, no beeps. It appeared to be stuck in a boot cycle, as the screen back light was coming on, and off, and on, and off etc, for 10 minutes straight.
I powered down and powered up and I get the dell logo and can enter the bios setup, but after that, no matter what I do, I get a dos based "BOOT MENU" with just these options on:
Network Boot <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu Setup <- loads the bios settings Diagnostics <- runs a diagnostic program which tests the hardware and reports all tests pass Change boot mode setting <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu
I can't get passed this menu.
I've tried booting from a DVD - both a Windows 7 installation disk, and the Dell recovery DVD I created when I first got the laptop, neither DVD boots, and apart from buzzing the DVD drive, don't have any effect at all.
Both disks have been tested in another Inspiron laptop I have, and I also set the boot priority order in the bios so that DVD is the first item in the list.
I've also tried a bootable USB stick, but no joy there either. The light on the stick shows it's being accessed, but I still end up at the Boot Menu above.
I purchased a Dell 7720 (contains 2 1TB HDD's) after speaking to Dell technical support who reassured me that when I install an mSATA drive, it is possible to install the OS on the drive and use it as the primary boot device.
So I received my 7720, plugged in the mSATA drive and cloned the OS partition to the drive. When I restarted the machine, behold... it is not in the list of bootable drives, however it has been recognized as an mSATA drive. After messing around with the BIOS for 30 minutes, I am unable to get it to be a bootable device.
I bought a recent Inspiron 7720 laptop, with Win8 pre-installed. It seemed to be installing some updates, when it shut down(with them having installed only 35%). When I attempt to power on, it passed the Dell logo screen, then sticks FOREVER (doesnt load the w8OS apparently). I tried the battery out-in trick - doesn't work.
If I press F2, it guides me to BIOS (Phoenix A10) Disabling secure boot and starting Legacy mode has NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER, exactly the smae startup issues but without the "F12 Boot Option)
If I press F12 during logo screen, it takes me to "F12 Boot Options", which is a black screen with an empty progress bar in the middle(apparently this should have the option to run a PSA diagnostic but it DOESNT SHOW ANYTHING!)....

I am trying to repair a ZD7000 series laptop. The initial problem was that it had a broken AC Jack. I got a new AC jack and soldered that in. While I was at it, I also got a 3.2GHz P4 out of another laptop to replace the one that was in this laptop.
Now the laptop does not pass the boot screen. It will just display the HP splash page, then reboot. No BIOS beeps. It does this on both AC power and battery.
I have tried different ram as well, with no luck.
I recently purchased an Inspiron 7720 in October 2012. A week ago, the laptop started freezing up while playing world of warcraft. I checked my Nvidia video card and there were some updates. I installed them and the computer started working normal again. On Saturday, while I was using Skype to transfer a file, the computer gave me a white screen and I had to hold down the power button to get it to shutdown. It rebooted and was working normal again. Then yesterday (Sunday), while using video chat on Skype the computer screen went into a flashing color pattern and I had to hold down the power button to get it to shutdown. Are there any diagnostic tests that I can run before calling Dell's tech department? I believe it is a video card issue but not completely sure.

When I power up my laptop it won't go past the dell logo. I tried the removal of the battery test. I also tried running the diagnostics test and everything was good. There were no error messages. What can I try next?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI need to reinstall xp on my Dell Inspiron 6400. I don't have any recovery disc or what so ever, only windows xp disc.
The weird thing is that the laptop won't boot from anything but the HD. To format the drive i had it connected externaly to other computer then formatted it from there. I tried using boot selector menu (F12) and selecting cd-rom - nothing happanes.
Also tried booting from bootable usb drive with xp installation on it - nothing happens. Also tried changing boot sequence in BIOS - no affect.
I thought my disc maybe is bad - but i checked in other laptop and it boots great,both from my disc and from my usb flash drive. How to make it boot? Tried resetting the bios to its default.
Also, I thought maybe its sata drivers issues which needs to be slipstreamed onto the windows xp installation - but i hardly think that's it, cause this laptop doesn't even have an option for AHCI mode.
