Dell :: XPS M1710 Smart Card Reader
Aug 29, 2007Has anyone ever used the smart card reader in their XPS M1710.
It was in there when Dell sent the M1710 to replace my Gen2 but I cant seem to find any use for it..
Apparently you can use it instead of a password but the cards dont seem easily available..

Jul 16, 2007Cant seem to get XP device manager to recognise this item says driver cant load or not present, tried dell suppport but all there is for it is some kinda security driver that dosnt do anything AFAICS tried just about reinstalling every bit of S**t dell offered on the drivers support page in the vain attempt to find which if any driver it needed.
Now i wonder if my its broken but as i have no idea what it is AFAIK i have 1 card reader and thats already installed the billion options it has that i will never use though SD card readers useful sometimes :
( this copy of XP i installed started with 16 Processes compared to dells 60 or so )

I own several PC cards and some express cards, so I would probably need an adapter to go from one to the other regardless.
Which adapter is easier to use? There is also the E6500 which has both slots. The only problem is that it weighs 1lb.

Nov 1, 2009Anyone got the new 64 bit Windows 7 driver (not the Vista driver) for 5530 WWAN card on E6400 working?.
The driver installed fine on my E6400 (running 64 bit Windows 7), but Wireless Manager (downloaded from Sony Ericsson website) stopped working saying it can't find any wireless device (probably because it can't recognize the new driver)..
Then I went to get Control Point Connection Manager and noticed that there's none for Windows 7. So how do you use the WWAN card without a client?..

I've tried installing various Ricoh drivers, including the Ricoh R5C847 for Win vista/xp 32 bit. I can't find a driver for Win7 32 bit, at least not on the Dell driver-support pages .....

Apr 1, 2013I have the Dell XPS L501x and am now getting a failed message when the SMART Short Self Test is run. The message says:
"Your drive indicates that a failure may be imminent. Backup all important files and replace drive."
The hard drive is SAMSUNG HM640JJ.
A couple of questiions please:
1. I take if that this is a legitimate error message as opposed to some system glitch.
2. If I buy another SAMSUNG HM640JJ drive how can transfer the data from the old to the new.

Oct 27, 2012I'm in the process of upgrading my L521X/XPS 15 to Windows 8. The A09 BIOS introduced UEFI booting, which I of course intend to use. However, I can't get Windows installed when Smart Response is activated in the BIOS. The installer simply doesn't show any disks - even when loading the correct drivers. Changing to AHCI allows me to install - but of course without the benefit of Smart Response. Now, the question is: is it possible to use pure UEFI and Intel Smart Response Technology on the L521X?

Apr 30, 2013Just bought an Inspiron 17R SE 7720 with a 32gb SSD. Started it up today and completed the 'setting up windows' bit. Opened up 'Intel Rapid Storage Technology' and it can see both of my 750gb HDD, and the 32gb SSD but there is no 'accelerate' tab available.
Incidentally, when I click on My Computer, I can also see both 750gb HDD and 32 GB SSD- i though the latter was not supposed to be visible here. Under 'Computer management' the SSD has an 8gb 'Hibernation' partition and a second usable partition.
Having read numerous posts about this already, I have checked in the Bios that Intel Smart storage is already selected.

Dec 7, 2009I have a Sony Vaio Z which I use it in my home(DHCP) and office(STATIC) wherein both sites are using Wifi.
The problem is Vaio Smart Network is not smart enough to automatically switch in different wifi access. It always says the I need to create a profile wherein there is already profiles created for both my home and office wifi access. I always need to open the vaio smart network utility and select the profile and switch to it and sometimes it doesn't work at all!
Dell Inspiron N5110 :: Hard Drive SMART Short Self Test Failure
Feb 17, 2013I have a Dell Inspiron N5110. The Warranty ran out in July of last year so for some reason I cannot email technical support directly.I ran the Dell PC Diagnostic test earlier today, all of which passed with the exception of the SMART Short Self Test which failed. Apparently my hard drive is "operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced". I tried this twice, once with the Dell diagnostic software installed on my laptop and once using the downloadable diagnostics from the Dell website, both had the same outcome.
I then tried the system diagnostics accessed via the F12 key on system startup. Again all passed but the hard drive test which would not run and provided the following message:
Error code 2000-0142
validation 12985
Msg Hard Drive 0 s/n (omitted), self test unsuccessful status = 7
I have read around on the support forums that the next step to try is removing and replacing the hard drive then re-running the diagnostics. If this does not solve the issue and I have to replace the hard drive does that mean I will need to buy a new copy of windows to install on the hard drive, as my laptop came with no disks? I have backed up all my important files but obviously not any programs.
what my next steps would be and what the process is should I have to replace my hard drive? I am a "noob" in this area and don't want to spending uneccassary money on parts that don't need to be replaced or buying software I don't need to replace as it is already available if you see what I mean?

Feb 25, 2013I ran the Lenovo Solution Center Harddisk test on my Thinkpad R61 (8918DFG) laptop and got a warning regarding the "SMART short self-test" with the result code: WHD01V000-QIHW7J.
The "SMART drive self-test" was Not Available. The other HDD tests went OK.
What does this mean? Should I have any concerns?
