Aug 31, 2012I just bought an M4600 that comes with a fingerprint / bio scanner. I cannot figure out how to activate and use the darn thing.

Jul 29, 2012Problem: Fingerprint Scanner - Windows log in does not give option to log in via fingerprint scanner.
Overview: After installing fingerprint drivers from the HP site and using the HP Protect Tools to successfully enroll fingerprint, I tried logging in via this method but the windows log in screen does not display this option. Device manager correctly identifies and shows the fingerprint sensor - however, the control panel says no biometric devices detected.
Details of what steps I took trying to make the scanner work are given below.
Specs:
1) Probook 4540s
2) Windows 7 64-bit
3) i5-3210m, 1Gb Hd 7650m, 4 Gb 1333Mhz, 750Gb 5400rpm, VFS 491 Fingerprint scanner.
Details of the problem and steps I took to install drivers:
After a fresh installation of Windows 7, I went to the HP driver site to download the latest drivers for Probook 4540s:

I installed the drivers in roughly this order:
1)realtek ethernet controller drivers,
2)audio drivers,
3) the chipset and USB 3.0 drivers (but not the Intel MEI driver)
4) Intel video driver: faced an issue such that drivers were not being allowed to install. After disabling switchable graphics in the bios, I was able to get these drivers to install.
5) AMD video drivers: installed after the intel HD graphics driver - installed but Catalyst Control Center was not being displayed. So I re-enabled switchable graphics in BIOS, re-installed these drivers and CCC was now available.
6) HP hotkey support
7) HP universal camera driver
8) Validity Fingerprint sensor
9) Synaptics Touchpad driver
10) Atheros wifi & bluetooth
11) Jmicron card reader
After driver installation, I installed the HP Protect Tools. After prompting for a PC reboot - which I did - it asked for setup of security etc.. Part of this pocess was the enrolling of my fingerprints - successful. However, upon log off/ restart of windows, an option to log in with the fingerprint scanner did not appear in the Windows log in screen.
I opened the Control Panel, and found there was no biometric devices tab, even though device manager showed biometric device and validity sensor (VFS 491). I then proceeded to uninstall HP protect tools and the validity driver for the fingerprint sensor, then made sure these services were running:
-Credential Manager
-Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
-DCOM Server Process Launcher
-RPC Endpoint Mapper
-Windows Biometric Service
-Plug and Play
After reboot HP Protect Tools as before would enroll my fingerprints, but again no prompt at windows login came to log in with fingerprint. However, one change after the installtion of [URL] was that in control panel there is now a tab for biometric devices; however, it says that windows did not find any biometric devices installed. An image is attached showing both the device manager and the control panel!

May 23, 2013I am having trouble with setting up the fingerprint scanner. I skipped the password set up when I first got this HP laptop. Now when I boot up my laptop the scanner flashes, but it won't let me set it up and asks for a password or scanner. Since I never set up my password I just close it and use my laptop. But now I don't know where/how to get back to the beginning in order to complete the set up.

Oct 9, 2014I am very new to Acer and Windows 8. I have bought this Travel Mate P645M notebook a month ago.
When I set it up, the fingerprint function was working fine until some windows update took place. It wasn't working by then, I am not sure what kind of update it was but one "discoverable" difference of the Window is that there is power button on the start page. (I am not sure if that will be useful to find out what kind of update it was or if is the malfunction related to the update)
So is it because of the update or is the actual fingerprint scanner broken? Cause I only bought this laptop last month, I didn't think it wil be broken within a month!!

May 3, 2012I have an HP Pavilion dv6500z (32-bit laptop) running Windows Vista Home Premium. I have a combined problem, and do not know if they are related, or separate.
1) I am missing an icon from the initial screen that you are presented with when Windows first comes up, where you select which account to login to, prior to any Login/PW screen. (see additional comments below).
This starting occurring on every "boot" (cold or warm) after having run my laptop in the Safe mode, to analyze a different issue.
2) My fingeprint scanner is not working...I no longer get any pop-up if I accidentally drag a finger across the scanner's eye.
Normally when I boot my computer, I get two icons to choose from: one with my name/icon. My account is a SysAdmin account, not a normal account. I know what its icon is. I don't remember what the other was...I don't think it was a Guest account since the icons (pictures) to choose from when creating a Guest account don't look familiar to what was on the screen as the 2nd icon. I don't remember what is was, but think that it was logging-in using the fingerprint scanner.

Feb 14, 2014I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. I am extremely frustrated with this, and have an unbelievable amount of stress because this was my only PC.

Basically, I'm quite happy with my E6400 but I don't use the fingerprint reader, because that involves using the Embassy Trust Suite.
This means that you cannot use the fingerprint reader for any other uses except logging on at boot and windows logon screen. You cannot use it for your web browser, for example.
Several people have asked Dell to invest in an open API for the fingerprint reader because of this. Dell suggested we opened a thread in their community feedback site, "Dell IdeaStorm", which I did. Here's the link.

Feb 7, 2010I got my Latitude E6500 a few days ago, I'm happy with it (except the lagging ALPS touchpad) but I have a problem with the fingerprint reader (Broadcom USH w/Swipe sensor).
The fingerprint reader is connected and does respond, but the ControlPoint software throws an error if I try to enroll my fingerprint (the error doesn't show up if I don't touch the sensor). If I reboot, the "Broadcom USH w/swipe sensor" is replaced by "Broadcom USH w/o swipe sensor" in the device manager. The swipe sensor is detected again after a complete shutdown.
Dell Latitude E5550 :: Enable Use Of The Fingerprint Reader?
Jan 21, 2015I've enrolled my fingerprints via the Windows 8.1 PC user settings app.
When I logon to my PC it provides the usual password box to type my password, but if I swipe the fingerprint reader nothing happens. I've registered four fingers, none of them work.
Are there some other settings I need to change to enable use of the fingerprint reader?
I see the biometric device in device manager, and registering fingerprints is no problem, it's just during logon that it's not working.
Dell Latitude E4200 :: USB And Fingerprint Stopped Working
Feb 21, 2013Two days after my warranty expired, both USB ports on my E4200 and the fingerprint reader stopped responding. The USB on the docking station work fine.
I have since tried to update the bios and uninstalled the USBs in Device Manager. All to no avail.
When I plug a stick into the USB port, it lights up (i.e., some power to the port), but the computer does not see anything plugged in.

Everything looks good but at this point there's no way to use my fingerprints to logon with Win7 pro.
In control panel / programs I can see installed: Dell Data Protection | Security Tools and Dell Data Protection | Security Tools Authentication but I can't find out any program to manage my fingerprinters.
I tried almost everything, installing/uninstalling drivers, softwares and all this didn't work. I suppose that I should find a program or something that allows me to associate the enrolled fingerprints to my account.
I even tried to use Dell My Downloads (with Internet Explorer) but I cannot because during the installation I had the message Service Tag Number not supported.
Windows logon shows me, next to my account and security card, another "account" fingerprints, I even tried to login with this but I received the message "Fingerprint not verified" (obviously because they are not associated to any account)....

Mar 14, 2013I have the following problem: I set up an Administrator Account with password security and then add a Dell Security with fingerpint security. Now, I cannot access the Windows. The problem is the TPM cannot be connected or something like that. The scan says it accepts the scanned finger, and password is also Ok. How can I disable secure access or reset password, disable fingerprint control, etc. In BIOS I do not find any possibility to disable fingerpint but TPM activation/deactivation is there.

Here are the problems I've faced with the installation I've tried to do myself:
Fan comes on high speed when screen is locked and gone blank.
Dell have not provided drivers for everything under Windows 8, which means I've got to figure out (a) which drivers I need to get from Windows 7 and (b) what order to install them in.

Nov 18, 2011I recently converted from a Lenovo X220 to a the Dell Latitude XT3. The XT3 is a better laptop minus a couple design choices. That said, there is one feature in particular that I will miss the most....My old X220 fingerprint reader allowed me to swipe with the latop powered down. This action would boot up the PC and log me in. This doesn't seem to work the same on the XT3. Instead, I must power it up then swipe in two separate steps.
Is there a way to get the XT3 to respond to a finger swipe while it is powered down?

Feb 4, 2015so this precision was originally a non baclit keyboard and recently replaced it with a backlit and the right arrow key does not work. I have checked every ribbon on this keyboard and everything is snug. I am running windows 8.1. Am I missing something here. Is it a hardware or software issue i need to look into?
