Dell :: Windows 7 Fingerprint Reader Woes

Jun 19, 2009

I'm having trouble with the fingerprint reader on my M4400. I have done a clean install of Windows 7 RC x64, and installed the relevant drivers, but the only software that recognizes the fingerprint reader is Embassy Wave bundled by Dell (which seems a bit, well, clunky ).

I have tried UPEK's Windows 7 software, which installs fine, but it cannot find the fingerprint reader. The same happens with DigitalPersona too; it installs perfectly but can't find the device. The fingerprint reader is listed in the control panel (it shows as '5880', which is the combined Broadcom fingerprint reader, smart card reader etc.), so I'm not sure why nothing but Dell's software can 'see' it.

Dell :: Fingerprint Reader Reinstalled Windows

Nov 16, 2008

I reinstalled windows on my laptop, and I go to re enroll my fingerprint with the fingerprint reader. The Fingerprint reader suite says I have no fingers enrolled, but when I go to enroll my finger again, it says the fingerprint is already enrolled. But I can't find it anywhere. I'm assuming the saved fingerprints are saved to the device itself, but I can't seem to import the saved prints.

HP J070CA OS/Software :: Windows 8.1 - Validity Fingerprint Reader

Oct 17, 2013

I just upgraded to Windows 8.1, and now the fingerprint reader doesn't work anymore.
I know that Win 8.1 has built-in biometrics support, so I tried uninstalling HP SimplePass, without success. I updated the drivers to the latest I found (, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, I started the "Windows Biometrics" service, I basically tried everything I could think of.
Right now, the Fingerprint reader drivers are installed correctly and it's detected by the system, but in Control Panel, the "Biometrics" category is not there. Also, in PC Settings => Accounts => SIgn-on, the Fingerprint option is disabled.
What I can do more? Or wait for newer drivers?

Dell Vostro 3560 :: Fingerprint Reader No Longer Works At Log On Screen Or Lock Windows 8

The reader only works when I'm on the desktop or on the start screen, also due to a problem with the video card drivers because it is causing several incompatiblidades system. All these mistakes I vii event log windows.Have I contacted AMD who said that Dell is to update the driver for the notebook has two cards (intel and AMD) and fits Dell make changes and corrections. And then Dell??

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: Fingerprint Reader Stopped Working - Windows 8.1

Jan 26, 2015

I can no longer use or enroll finger prints on my T430s laptop running Windows 8.1!

ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software is

Sensor: TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode). Driver version:
Symptom: when trying to enroll a fingerprint, I get the message: 'Use a longer stroke when scanning your fingerprint,' the sensor light turns from green to blinking orange (3 times), then back to green. Same happens when when trying to enroll from Windows PC Setting/ Sign-in Options/ Fingerprint (Add).
What I tried: uninstalling ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software and Driver (to include selecting 'Delete the driver software for this device'), rebooting, using Lenovo System Update to re-install ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software, rebooting. Have also tried to manually install previous versions of the Fingerprint Software to no avail.
I had this similar problem in the past, since upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, but the steps above usually resolved it.

Lenovo W520 ThinkPad W Series :: Windows Logon With Fingerprint Reader

Oct 13, 2010

I have a new W510 but I cannot get the fingerprint reader working for Windows logon.  I have the Lenovo fingerprint software installed.  It can enroll my fingerprint with ease, which also shows that the reader works.  I have turned on the option "use fingerprint scan instead of password when logging into windows".  When I restart Windows, I see a fingerprint logon option, but it still defaults to CTRL+ALT+DELETE.  When I pick the fingerprint option and scan my fingerprint, the lght blinks twice and nothing happens.  I know from my old W510 that I should be seeing a Lenovo Fingerprint icon on the logon screen, but I just cannot get that to display.  What have I missed?
The virtual agent was no support - it gives me a setting that doesn't exist, tells me to reboot, tells me that the first time I log in I will need both fingerprint and password, but afterwards it only needs fingerprint.

Dell Vostro 3550 :: Fingerprint Reader - Biometric Devices Applet Not In Control Panel - Windows 7

Jan 3, 2015

Because of a virus, I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have gotten everything else working except the fingerprint reader.I have installed the Validity Fingerprint Reader driver from the Dell Support site. The fingerprint reader shows up in the Device Manager. However, the Biometric Devices applet doesn't appear in the Control Panel.

I tried letting Windows update detect the fingerprint reader. It installed a driver for a Synaptics device. This was enough to get the Biometric Devices applet to appear in the Control Panel. However, when I tried to configure the fingerprint reader, I got an error saying no fingerprint management software was installed. I have seen lots of posts online directing me to for drivers or the DigitalPersona software, but Validity Inc. seems to have gone out of business. The DigitalPersona software is available on the Dell Support site for my service tag.

I have even tried installing the Windows 8 Validity Sensor Driver for my laptop, but though it successfully installs, it produces the same results.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T540p - Fingerprint Reader Not Working Upon Waking From Sleep For Windows Login

Mar 11, 2014

I have a brand new T540P with a Validity fingerprint reader.
Rougly 80% of the time, the Fingerprint reader is unresponsive at the windows login screen after waking the computer from sleep. It works 100% of the time when booting from an off position, however. Once logged in, it also works 100% of the time. The issue only arises when logging into windows.
Things I have tried

-uninstalling/installing device in device manager and finger print manager pro software
-setting fingerprints through both fingerprint manager pro software (lenovo) OR through the built in windows fingerprint control panel options
-disabling "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" in device manager.
I should note as well that I have another T540P that I ordered as a replacement. Both models experience the same issue.
Is this a platform wide issue affecting all T540P models?

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T440p / Windows 7 - Fingerprint Reader Fails On First Attempt To Log In But Works On Second After Delay

Jan 7, 2012

I have a T440p with Windows 7 Pro.  Except on rare occasions, I am unable to log into Windows with my first swipe across the fingerprint reader.   The green light is on when I do the first swipe and it immediately goes off and stays off for around 15 seconds, during which time another swipe does nothing.  Then the green light will return and a second finger swipe will log me on.
It's made using the fingerprint reader for login impractical, because it's faster to just go to the password screen and log in that way.

Dell :: If You Like The Fingerprint Reader On Your XPS

Oct 30, 2008

I highly recommend the standalone desktop version by Upek.

The cheapest I could find was ($41.08 with 5% off coupon available everywhere).

Mine came with the 5.8.2 version of their software, but the build date of the one posted in the "Upek" thread was a bit higher, so I used that one... ((not so) New Upek Fingerprint Reader Driver)

The reader operates exactly the same way as the one in the laptop (duh? same brand and same software).

If you have encrypted files from your laptop, you can open them on your desktop and vice versa...

Dell :: Fingerprint Reader During Boot

Apr 30, 2009

i have been trying to figure this out for a week with no luck and even no luck through dell.

I have a new latitude e6400, i originally set my fingerprint, then decided to clean install vista 64 bit, after tons of problems, i then abandoned the effort. Went back to the original vista business 32 bit, however, everytime i turn on my computer, during pre-boot it asks me to scan my finger to get access to my computer, i just want to disable it, but it will not let me, i went into security setting in dell control point, and in that funky embassy software, i cannot find a way to disable the finger print reader, i dont want to uninstall just disable, any insights?

Dell :: E6400 Fingerprint Reader

Jul 1, 2009

I just received my E6400 from Dell today and setup the fingerprint reader. I noticed it only works when I boot up the notebook and then I scan to get to the windows login screen.

I was wondering If I can set it up so that I scan to login to windows rather than typing in a password. I was also wondering If I could configure it to login to websites for things such as email since I know you can do that with Windows Fingerprint Reader.

Dell :: How To Turn Off Fingerprint Reader

Jun 25, 2009

I got an E4300 through work and set up the fingerprint reader at the request of my IT department, but I hate this stupid thing. It never works and I always have to manually override it.

I asked them to take it off, but it's "firm policy" for our laptops to have the reader turned on.

Anyone know how to turn it off? It's controlled through Dell ControlPoint and maybe a proprietary program we have.

I eventually installed the drivers from the 86 folder. Just wondering if this is correct? The call centre said I should not be presented with these folder options.

I've read the readers can be quite flaky so if I decided to actually use it to log onto my computer, I want to make sure I will also always have the option to enter a password instead

Dell :: Different Fingerprint Reader In E6400 And E6500

Nov 9, 2008

When I ordered my E6400, it said on the Dell configuration pages that it would have a UPEK fingerprint reader. I am quite sure I got another fingerprint reader since it says "Broadcom USH CV w/Fingerprint Swipe Sensor" in Device Manager. When I look closely at the quotes I got from the Dell sales guy it doesn't say UPEK anywhere on the E6400 quote but it does say UPEK on the E6500 quote.

Does the E6500 have the same (non-UPEK) fingerprint reader?

Is it possible to get the E6400 with a UPEK fingerprint reader?

I would like to have a laptop with the UPEK fingerprint reader since I ordered a Dell USB UPEK fingerprint reader with my laptop that I intend to use when the computer is in the docking station. The USB UPEK fingerprint reader doesn't work with the fingerprint software on my E6400. I am not 100% sure it will work even if I would have the same brand of fingerprint reader in the laptop but I think it should increase the chance a lot.
